Eagles hang on for 24-16 win over Redskins

cbd4d5e3ef1b4cd25ba4b4c833213716-1 AP

The Eagles showed speed, and showed toughness, and showed their fans something they hadn’t seen for a while.

For the Eagles, beating the Redskins 24-16 was a doubly sweet win.

Not only did they take sole possession of first place in the NFC East with a 6-5 record (the 5-5 Cowboys are on their bye), but they won at home for the first time since last season.

The win was the first at Lincoln Financial Field since Sept. 30, 2012, and they had lost 10 straight in their own building since then.

The Eagles racked up 424 total yards, with LeSean McCoy coming back from a hamstring injury to combine for 150 yards from scrimmage. Quarterback Nick Foles continued to show signs he could be the guy, throwing for 298 yards and adding a touchdown run of his own.

But they needed to withstand a late Redskins rally, with cornerback Brandon Boykin’s interception in the end zone sealing the win.

For the Redskins, their second straight loss drops them to 3-7, and makes it seem much more unlikely they’re going to go on a run like last year, when they went from 3-6 to the playoffs.

Their defense was sieve-like all day, and their passing game was equally bad. A pair of deep touchdown passes (to fullback Darrel Young and wide receiver Aldrick Robinson) in the fourth quarter made the stats look better than they were.

Quarterback Robert Griffin III struggled to find time to throw, and struggled to hit open targets when he did. He finished 17-of-35 passing for 264 yards, but missed consistently through the day and ruined the comeback with an ill-advised pass on the interception.

The Redskins were short-handed in terms of targets, with tight end Jordan Reed leaving early with a concussion, and wide receiver Leonard Hankerson with a knee injury.

It’s too bad Goodell and Mara unfairly took 36 million from the Redskins in cap space. We have a Superbowl quality QB, RB and WR. The rest should have been taken care of over the last two offseasons but the NFL screwed us over. Whoever wins the East, enjoy being bounced in Round 1. #TheRedskinswerescrewed

Chip Kelly doesn’t seem to know how to finish games in the NFL. He never let up when he was at Oregon. What is he thinking? Really have to question the coach and his conservative play calling that let Washington back in the game.

  5. dolphins4 says: Nov 17, 2013 4:32 PM

The Eagles could have won this game by 40 points but Chip took his foot off the gas at halftime which is way too early in the NFL.

Good not great game for the Eagles. Foles looked good not great. The defense was overall good (but pathetic in the 4th quarter). However, it’s kind of obvious the Eagles got to hang on to Foles. With Maclin back -if re-signed- then the offense won’t stall out like it did in the 4th and in the 2nd on that field goal drive. It’s more obvious that even though they are playing better the big reason why we got to keep Foles is because the defense needs more help and it wouldn’t improve for years if we traded an RG3 like package for Mariotta.

1st place in the NFC East after a 4-12 season, great job Chip Kelly. Do you things Ray Didinger still wants Kelly to apply for the USC job? What a joke!!!

  10. 1rockyracoon says: Nov 17, 2013 4:34 PM

Griffin really Favred his last pass. Time for Snyder to hire yet another head coach. I’m tired of hearing about what the “old RGIII” would have done. Maybe this is exactly what Griffin is as a QB. Maybe he’s just the newer, not as exciting version of Vick.

  11. realfootballfan says: Nov 17, 2013 4:36 PM

I watched the end of that game and am convinced Griffin simply hates Shanahan and wants him fired. He looks indifferent to him and imo it all stems back to the playoff game when he didn’t pull him. Wonder who the next Washington coach will be?

Not surprised that Eagles fans can’t recognize greatness. You losers did, after all, worship Donovan McNabb. Come talk once your franchise wins a Super Bowl. HAIL TO THE REDSKINS!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. chaddukesthebuttpirate says: Nov 17, 2013 4:42 PM

This appears to be the end of the Shanahan era in DC, which could be a mistake, because what other viable options are there before RG3’s career is over?

  15. frank booth says: Nov 17, 2013 4:43 PM

RG3 was purely lucky today- One TD on a misplayed catch-and-run, another on an underthrown ball. Under 49% completion rate. He is not “elite”.

  16. chaddukesthebuttpirate says: Nov 17, 2013 4:44 PM

BTW… Philly always hated McNabb, just ask the man himself

  17. The Shoeman says: Nov 17, 2013 4:44 PM

  18. jucam1 says: Nov 17, 2013 4:44 PM

The game got close because the Eagles were destroying their little brother down the road. It’s nice they tried at the end, but their sad little QB showed what he is made of

  19. Steve B says: Nov 17, 2013 4:46 PM

It’s troubling that the Eagles stopped playing after 3 quarters but they absolutely crushed the Indigenous Peoples when it mattered.

Indigenous Peoples should start looking forward to the draft….oops, they don’t have any draft picks….

  22. blackqbwhiterb says: Nov 17, 2013 4:53 PM

Kyle Shanahan…..seems self-defeating to me.. Forever throwing in running situations, today running over & over down 24-0…. RG3 clearly not the accurate passer of last year. With nobody in his face missing wide open receivers every week…. It seems last year was a mirage…defense porous as usual, I can live with… Special Teams a joke…. How did this team win 10 games last year? Outside of Morris, Garcon, & Trent Williams, they’ve got NOTHING

Stop coming up with all of these excuses, Redskins’ fans! Your team is in LAST place in THE WORST division in football. RG3 is not worthy of the NFL (Nice floating duck off your back foot to end the game). Just glad see your best QB Cousins continue to sit on the bench.

“The Redskins are who we thought they were!!!” Have fun with another 2 decades of being bottom feeders Washington. An Eagles team in a rebuilding year has just taken first. Just imagine how good they’re going to be once they actually are built. Be afraid NFC East, be very afraid.

“Come talk once your franchise wins a Super Bowl. HAIL TO THE REDSKINS!!!!!!!!!!!”

You weren’t even a a twinkle in your fathers eye the last time the Redskins won anything important.

I have to say that as impressive as Andy Reid has been in Kansas City the success of the Eagles offense and Chip Kelly really makes him look bad. Foles, Mccoy, and Jackson are all on pace for career seasons and it’s clear that Reid had no idea how to utilize his own players to their peak potential.

Nevertheless it’s awesome to see the Eagles in first place again. After spending the last two years having to watch the so called “dream team” this season has been refreshing and a pleasant surprise so far.

  33. frank booth says: Nov 17, 2013 5:13 PM

  34. lagg1 says: Nov 17, 2013 5:15 PM

I am not a fan but the Eagles are very entertaining when their offense is moving the ball. The first half was a clinic. Give Kelly another year or two with this offense and look out. Foles is a keeper.

  35. boyshole25 says: Nov 17, 2013 5:23 PM

Haha the only thing more pathetic than watching that game is hearing the fans bicker back and forth. Both teams are terrible

  36. ketch20too says: Nov 17, 2013 5:58 PM

RG 3-13 hasn’t look very good. But it is unreasonable to expect him to come back and be the old RG III right away after that injury. I’ll reserve judgement until next year. BUT..stuck here in deadskin country I am LOVING watching these humiliating loses pile up.

  37. acasar123 says: Nov 17, 2013 6:42 PM

It is becoming increasingly and painfully obvious that the Redskins made an enormous mistake when they mortgaged their future to draft RGIII. I continue to be mystified by the hype that boils over into insanity every time one of these “athletic” quarterbacks enter the league. The problem with every one of them is that they have crappy mechanics, no pocket instincts, and only succeed when the run all over the place…just like Mr. Griffin.

What? That has nothing to do with being docked 18 million two years in a row. Whatever they are under, you won’t be under for long. If you lose 18 million two years in a row you’re a put at a huge disadvantage. If you’re way under one year that means you’re right up against the next year unless you’re the Browns and just don’t care.

  53. skinsfan91 says: Nov 17, 2013 9:25 PM

Those of you saying RGIII is the worst QB in the league are the joke. Just wait till this team has their cap space back. Wait till we get a complete team. Our receivers get no separation. Our line doesn’t block. Our defense leaves guys wide open. Yet none of that matters. “RGKNEE SUCKS!!!111.

  54. robman91 says: Nov 17, 2013 10:08 PM

The one area I think RG3 needs to improve more than anything else is his pocket awareness. His problem today was that he didn’t do a good job of feeling the blitz and avoiding it to make a play. That being said, he also had very little time to do anything in the pocket, as the offensive line for Washington was repeatedly beaten on play after play. I watched the replays and the receivers of Washington didn’t even have time to finish their routes before RG3 was running for his life and on his back. When Griffin actually has time in the pocket, he plays well, but when he gets a lot of pressure he struggles (which is partly his fault and partly incompetence by the line).

Considering the Eagles are carrying about 20 million in cap space, and that’s after eating Nnamdi’s deal…..I think they’d be fine

It effected the Skins more than it would other teams because they insist on never saving a dollar in cap space, even if it doesn’t translate into higher quality players

Do you know what makes the reality of the Eagles being 2-0 against the Redskins this year the most enjoyable for me? It makes anything that logicalvoice posts completely irrelevant. At least for another year. Even more irrelevant than anything he said already was. Because at least now, the Eagles have proven they are a better team than his awful Redskins. The record shows that.

Cap space has nothing to do with the redskins having no talent, Goodell is not the one who took 3 first round picks and a 2nd from them, that’d be the Rams.

Mr. Wright, congrats on taking advantage of 4 straight weeks of backup quarterbacks. Your next 6 games come against Romo, RGIII, Philip Rivers, Russell Wilson, and Matthew Stafford; a far cry from a 1-5 Minnesota team starting Josh Freeman given 4 days to learn the playbook, Matt Barkley, an injured Tyrelle Pryor, and Scott Tolzein.
Beat a healthy starting QB THEN come talk to US!

    NYG…7-9 at best
