Ed Reed to start for Jets

When safety Ed Reed signed with the Jets on Thursday, coach Rex Ryan said that the veteran would play right away but that he wouldn’t be a starter.

It didn’t take long for Ryan to change his mind. The Jets have announced that Reed will start in place of Antonio Allen on Sunday. He’ll start next to Dawan Landry, who will be moving to the strong safety role that he played before taking on more free safety responsibilities with the Jets this season.

There’s no word on what kind of split there might be in terms of snaps between the two players, but it’s likely that Reed will get plenty of chances to prove that his ineffectiveness in Houston was based more on a bad fit with the defense than skills that have declined too much for Reed to succeed.

That will be one of the things worth watching during an AFC East clash on a windy day in Buffalo.
