Giants improve to 4-6, set up big game with Cowboys

c1f3484287014cbb6777a05dbe10d3e3 AP

Knock the competition they faced at quarterback if you like, but the Giants defense has come back to life over the last four games.

The exclamation point on their resurrection came when defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul picked off a Scott Tolzien screen pass and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter at the Meadowlands. JPP’s big play came just after a Giants drive went up in smoke with two sacks and turned a one-score game into a comfortable 27-13 lead for the Giants.

Pierre-Paul’s status was up in the air until game time because of a shoulder injury and he’s been less than 100 percent all year after back surgery, but the big play on Sunday was a vintage bit of athleticism as he snatched the ball out of the air and seemed to be in the end zone a couple of seconds later.

It capped a strong performance by the entire Giants defense that has them at 4-6 heading into next week’s date with Dallas. They’ve allowed just 47 points over those four games, a total that goes a long way toward explaining why their season still matters after the dreadful start to the year.

A fifth-straight win would leave them a game behind the Eagles in the NFC East, heady territory for a team that lost their first six games. That win won’t be easy to come by with an offense that still had plenty of problems despite a strong performance from Victor Cruz.

The Packers missed a chance to move themselves back into a tie atop the NFC North and their offense didn’t look any better after giving Tolzien a week to prepare. He made some big plays in the passing game and wound up with 339 yards on the day, but he threw another interception early in the third quarter and was picked off again with 1:49 to play to end any chance of a comeback. The Packers could never get their running game in gear when they were still in a position to rely on it heavily, which helped Tolzien’s numbers more than their chances of winning.

More is needed next week against Minnesota or the Packers will find themselves pushed to the fringes of the playoff race before they can get Aaron Rodgers back into the lineup.

    Career starts:

    Tolzien – 1
    Rodgers – 86

    Career Pick 6:

    Tolzien – 1
    Rodgers – 1

Still waiting for a complete game offensively, but much better than the previous three, yet.

I’ll take it. Eli is going to break out sooner or later. When he does the NFC East is in trouble..

  7. larryboodry says: Nov 17, 2013 7:24 PM

Packers still a better team than Detroit when Rodgers comes back, it will be a tight NFC North race to the end. And Detroit will look at their sweep of the Bears as proof they are now good, even if the Bears ultimately have the better season.

In all fairness, Giants have been shutting down the run pretty effectively. Giants have a top 10 run defense, and it has been getting better and better every week.

  19. obsessedvikingfan says: Nov 17, 2013 7:54 PM

the Vikings may have lost but they lost to a 9-1 (now 10-1) team. The worthless and classless packers lost to a 3 -6 (now 4-6 team).

With all the wind from Wisconsin saying Tolzein it better than Ponder, they both equally suck. Tolzein maybe more.

  20. whatjusthapped says: Nov 17, 2013 8:02 PM

Tolzien is not ready for prime time. He cannot go on throwing 2 or 3 INT’s per game and expect to win in the NFL.

I would think the Packers first objective with him to just to get him to stop throwing to the other team. Then we will worry about the rest of the offense.

  21. jjh1982 says: Nov 17, 2013 8:03 PM

What’s funny is Ponder is your starting Qb and your saying he’s barely better than a guy with just one start lmao, you Vikings fans are hilarious

  23. realfootballfan says: Nov 17, 2013 8:08 PM

Call me crazy, but this team is still my favorite to win that division, bad Eli and all. And if they get in, I’d be afraid if I were the other playoff teams because they’ve run the table twice in the last 6 years against much better competition to get to the Super Bowl.

  24. ohnoflorio says: Nov 17, 2013 8:21 PM

What break will the giants get next week? Will romo get in a car crash? Will Dez get arrested? Will all the O-line get MERSA? Stay tuned…bc the luckiest team in the league is coming to a TV near u!

  25. ohnoflorio says: Nov 17, 2013 8:26 PM

@realfootballfan. U r crazy. NYG are classless & suck. Call me when they beat a team w/a QBR better than 40 or a QB that has more TDS than INTs…

Tolzien played well. Two of those picks were awesome athletic plays by beason and jpp. Wish Rodgers played. The momentum we would have gotten from beating him yet again would have been good for another 4 straight wins. Giants are starting to simmer. You all are starting to get a little sweat forming on your collective NFC brows. I don’t blame you.

    Precisely.

Tried to tell ol’ Clay Matthews earlier in the comments that the “we beat ourselves” attempt wasn’t going to work today. Giants forced everything they got defensively, and still didn’t capitalize fully (albeit better today) offensively.

And Packers fans who think the outcome would have been different are kidding themselves. We own Green Bay, plain and simple.

Teams fear is because they know what we can do.

On another note – where are the short passed as opposed to the 10+ yard routes!!??
We have 2 backups on the OLine, Eli still has no protection.

    GO BIG BLUE!!!

Any top ten NFL team is there because of quarterback play. Any of those teams that lose their No. 1 playmaker is going to be in a world of hurt. The Packers are no exception.

Despite the consecutive losses, four facts remain; the Packers are only one game out of first place, their QB play is still better than the Vikings, they are still ahead of the Vikings in the won-loss column, and Viking fans still have to taste it until those facts change.

I was having flashbacks of another UW quarterback who wore #16 for the Packers–Randy Wright. Stick the fork in the Pack, their goose is cooked this year. Don’t rush back Rodgers, it’s Seattle’s year anyway.

  57. 12sgotthepornstache says: Nov 18, 2013 10:18 AM

It is absolutely hilarious how just a year ago everyone wants to complain about Rodgers only being a system qb and that he couldn’t do anything without his excellent receivers. But now for some odd reason he’s our whole team. No one other than Green Bay fans have been saying it for years, so I guess it’s nice of all you know it alls to finally admit he’s the best in the league. And fordmandalay you’re an Idiot because the only people prepared to lose their starting quarterback are the ones whose quarterback sucks

“Weez a movin’ on up to the top!”
Hey, no Big Blue fan could have predicted this. First, the 0-6 start to a 4 game winning streak; Secondly, playing scrub/backup QBs but stopping their highly respected RBs. This low offense output just enough to win games and defense protecting leads makes it seem like the Giant teams of old. Whatever it is, it is working and as a fan, to still have meaningful games in late November after their start is nothing short of a miracle. Not saying they will make playoffs yet, but you are seeing clearly why Tom Coughlin is the man for this team. They never give up. GO BLUE!

  61. ruvelligwebuike says: Nov 18, 2013 1:04 PM

You would almost think that the Vikings weren’t 2-8, never won a Super Bowl, need corporate buyouts to avoid blackouts, and live in a state that can’t build something that doesn’t tip over when it snows.

To the Giants fans, what can I say? You guys have the Pack’s number and always have. Congrats on the win. By the way, did you know that Minnesota has doctors, tall buildings, libraries and a theater district? This is unheard of in all other states, and truly makes them incredibly sophisticated.
