There was a longer hesitation than you’d have expected between the time Broncos coach John Fox fell ill and defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio was named interim head coach.
That was likely, in part, because Del Rio had just interviewed for a job the day before.
According to Jay Glazer of FOX Sports, Del Rio interviewed for the vacant head coaching job at his alma mater, Southern Cal. According to Glazer, Trojans athletic director Pat Haden asked for permission, it was granted, and he flew to Denver to talk to him Nov. 1.
That was during the Broncos’ bye week, and the day before Fox fell ill in North Carolina, where he was hospitalized for eventual heart surgery.
There was no word on the status of the job, but it certainly explains the delay in promoting Del Rio to a job most expected he’d fill while Fox was out.
