Jets stay on form, get blown out in Buffalo

Whatever else you may say about the Jets, at least they’re consistent.

They’ve followed up each of their five victories with a loss and they’ve followed up their two most impressive performances of the seaon by playing the role of doormat the next week. The Bills ran away with a 37-14 victory on Sunday that dropped the Jets to 5-5 on the season and left quarterback Geno Smith looking totally overmatched. Smith threw three interceptions, fumbled the ball away on a sack and looked incapable of moving the team for most of the afternoon in a dispiriting performance.

Smith was pulled for Matt Simms in the fourth and there will surely be some in New York wondering if that should be a more permanent arrangement. Smith has bounced back from bad games before this season, which is part of the reason why it seems hard to fathom the Jets going in a different direction at this point.

Same goes for the Bills, but for different reasons. E.J. Manuel was 20-of-28 for 245 yards and two touchdowns on Sunday, finding great success throwing the ball to T.J. Graham and Marquise Goodwin down the field. The Bills were expected to struggle with the passing game thanks to injuries to Stevie Johnson and Robert Woods, but it turned out to be the exact opposite.

More of the same the rest of the season will bode well for Manuel’s future in Buffalo. The Jets, meanwhile, are left hoping that their consistent inconsistency continues and they get a win next week.
