Case Keenum will start against the Jaguars

Matt Schaub’s return to the Houston offense will not continue against Jacksonville in Week 12.

Texans coach Gary Kubiak said Monday that Case Keenum will be the starting quarterback against the Jaguars. Kubiak pulled Keenum in the second half of Sunday’s loss to the Raiders, turning to Schaub with the Texans down 28-17. Schaub was able to lead the Texans to a pair of field goals, but the game ended with him arguing with wide receiver Andre Johnson on the sideline after the Texans failed to score on four tries from inside the Oakland 10-yard line.

Kubiak explained his decision on Sunday as one he made because of adjustments to the game plan and protections that Keenum wasn’t experienced with at this point in his career. Kubiak said he’d make the same decision again under the same circumstances.

“I didn’t want to put a young guy in a bad situation. I’d do it again. I tried to help out quarterback and offensive line,” Kubiak said, via John McClain of the Houston Chronicle.

If Kubiak does make the same move with Schaub at Reliant Stadium again, the Texans offense may have to be ready with the silent snap count they were forced to break out against the Raiders.

  1. Will he be benched by the 2nd quarter this time? He didn’t even look that bad yesterday. Schaub ended w/ a lower QBR then him too. The Texans are not making the playoffs, why not see if Keenum is the answer? If he’s not, you have a high draft pick.

  2. Every week I go back and forth with my feelings towards Kubiak. Last weekend was RIDICULOUS !!!! Are you serious? He throws 1 int and you bench him? Did you forget that he went 7:0 TD:int ratio before that in the last 3 games? An his excuse was that he had things he thought he could do more quickly with Schuab. DUDE GET OVER IT. Schuab will not work. He had one of the worst qb injuries you can get with a Lins Franc injury and he had the worst kind of it. (Pretty sure). ITS OVER. The worst part about it, is that I love your offense and you’re a great coach. Never having a 2nd qb on the roster other than undrafted guys and Schuab is your own fault. I do not feel bad that you’ll probably get fired because of that. I will feel bad that you got fired though.

  3. lol thisll be the biggest game for houston and jax in quite some time.
Its a rivalry game, if either of these teams qualify for any kinda rival status its against each other.
    And its for Number 1

  4. The question is, what was possibly in the modified game plan that he thought Keenum couldn’t handle? And does anyone believe it was nothing other than a knee jerk reaction to pull Keenum?

  5. This made no sense whatsoever. I’ve can’t wrap my head around it. Schaub is done. D-O-N-E. Why should this guy ever set foot on the field ever again??? The season is lost, so why not figure out if Keenum is the guy to build around? It’s EXACTLY what the Bears are doing with McCown! If he isn’t and you disagree with me, that’s fine. I get it. But still: imagine you are a Texans fan. Do you want to see Keenum or the guy who has thrown more TDs to opposing defenses than he has his own team?!

Also, this game wasn’t even out of reach! Was magical Schaub going to come in like Roy Hobbs and light up the stadium like an Aurora Borealis??? Kubiak was going to rally the troops around a proverbial F-Minus horrible QB who has totally lost the faith of all his team mates? Again, this move made no sense.

One more thing! Fantasy football owners got hammered because of this…or at least I did. Since Rodgers got injured and I traded Rivers away in just a horrible deal, I had to pick up Keenum. Boooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! Now I have Tannehill (ugh) because I have no idea if Kubiak will have a mini stroke again and do the exact same thing after the first series.

  6. there should be no controversy. Case has played darn well, why was he benched? so they lose with him, OK, fine, at least you know what you have. if you go with schaub, you lose and still are wondering if case can be the guy.

  7. so in addition to being a bad coach, he is now a liar as well. i lost all respect i had for him as a man when i read this since he is lying through his teeth on this.

and i don’t understand the people that are saying Kubiack has a good offense. have you not been watching the last 17 games? it is atrocious.

Has anyone seen the Steelers’ trophy case lately?

Yeah. Thanks for the easy match up in XLV to keep that case a little more dusty.

  9. Like I said yesterday, if you are wondering why teams bother to fire coaches mid-season, this is why.

Coaches pulling desperate and stupid moves trying to win meaningless games in lost seasons.

Schaub isn’t part of the Texans future, and neither is Kubiak. Fire him now, and tell the interim guy that his only mission is to find out between now and the end of the season which players on this roster can be built around and which cannot.

    Period.

Pulling Keenum gave the Raiders the game on a silver (& black) platter. Schaub is DONE. Go with the future, which is Keenum WITHOUT Kubiak as coach.

Charles Woodson gets some credit. The old man gives up some completions, but is still a baller.

  11. Keenum is not the future for anything. Seriously? The Texans are a train wreck until They clean house. The owner is a numbskull.

  12. @johnnyjagfan

Maybe so, due to the Jags virtually getting no kinda pressure on the QB VIA front four. I’m not trying to say that our corners and safeties are all world, but a secondary can cover receivers only for so long without any QB pressure.
