Charles Johnson carted off with apparent knee injury

The Carolina Panthers’ defense took a huge blow early in the third quarter when defensive end Charles Johnson was forced from the game with an apparent knee injury.

Johnson was injured on a 12-yard carry by Patriots’ running back LeGarrette Blount. Replays showed New England offensive lineman Marcus Cannon delivered an illegal leg-whip to Johnson – that wasn’t called – and led to the injury. Johnson was in obvious pain on the field before walking to the sidelines.

After being looked at by the trainers, Johnson was carted from the sidelines into the locker room.

It’s a big loss for the Panthers. Johnson entered Monday night’s game with 8.5 sacks on the season.

UPDATE 11:23 p.m. ET: Johnson returned to the sidelines and was able to re-take the field late. A major injury apparently avoided for the Panthers. Johnson hit Tom Brady to force an incompletion on the Patriots’ final drive.

That was a dirty play by NE back up RT. He was beat on the play and leg whipped Charles Johnson. If its an ACL that is a huge blow to Carolina to finish the year.

    Hope the is alright.

that was a garbage play by the Patriots tackle… Typical BS from the Pats – hope CJ is okay but it looked like he was in pain.

This guys season is over thanks to a cheap shot. I wonder if the panthers will aim for Brady’s knee from now on.

Lets see a huge fine on this one, eh? SUH has never injured a player like this and he’s been robbed several times by the league.

that could be unfortunate because he was playing outta his mind this year

Just a horrible no-class cheap shot of cheap shots. Cannon should be suspended until Johnson can play again, if that’s a year, two years, so be it. Deliberate infliction of injury. Indefensible.

Cannon… Better or worse move than Walden/Goldson? Worse IMO.

If I were the coach the next play after the cheap shot would be an all out blitz with a personal foul for a cheap shot on Brady’s knees.

Filthy, dirty play. He needs to be suspended 1 game at a minimum.

Pats fan here and I agree that he deserves to be fined heavily.

Cheap shot Cannon, be better than that.

At least Johnson came back into the game, and did indeed get a good shot on Brady.
