Giants-Redskins remains on Sunday Night Football in Week 13

The Giants were flexed out of a Sunday night appearance in Week 11 as the league decided to move the Broncos and Chiefs into prime time while shuffling the Giants and Packers to an afternoon start.

There will be no such move for the Giants in Week 13, however. The league has announced that their trip to Washington to face the Redskins will remain the nightcap.

Should the Giants lose to the Cowboys next week, the NFL will have a game between two losing teams with very slim chances of making the playoffs on their hands. They didn’t have many other choices if they wanted a game featuring two teams with playoff aspirations since they weren’t going to flex the rematch between the Broncos and Chiefs, but moving the Cardinals and Eagles would have at least guaranteed two teams with winning records.

Those are two strong television markets, though, and a Giants win next week would give them five in a row after their season-opening six-game losing streak so it’s not too hard to see why the NFL decided to stick to the schedule.

The only reason to tune into Giants-Redskins is to see if thats the week RGIII’s knee gives out.

    all about the money…

Now how about dumping Thursday games. I don’t watch them and never will on pure principals.

the only reason NBC is not flexing that game is cause all their camera equipment is in Baltimore on Thursday night.

It’ll be a 4-7 team butting up against a 3-8 team. It simply oozes excitement!

Winner of this game? I don’t care. Loser? Tv viewer

Cant argue with this logic….plus as a Giants, I hate when my team plays at night anyway. I wish the league would flex them to the day.

  8. pemory says: Nov 18, 2013 12:03 PM

I’ve got nothing against either club, but come on…it’s the SNF Game because it’s comprised of two strong TV Markets??? This is why I often pass on the Sunday evening game. Several lousy match-ups every season, usually involving poor “large market” teams (Boys, Skins, Jets, etc.). If you’re listening NFL (not likely I know), I certainly won’t be tuning in.

you think they only have one set of cameras? it’s because washington and NY are much better markets than arizona and philly. pretty simple.

Yes because major TV networks have only a single set of cams/road equipment and techs.

And c’mon everyone, here’s a chance to watch RGME embarrass himself and the Washington team in primetime. How could the league pass on that ?

  15. bigdon76 says: Nov 18, 2013 12:33 PM

Used to be a die hard fan. Could not miss any football. This year I watch niners games but other than that I don’t care for thursday nights, sunday nights and monday nights. As well as any other games. Before i needed my nfl fix. Now kardashians are as entertaining as the no hit league. This league is becoming unwatchable. #greatprimetimegamesNFL

Fedex Field is probably 35-40 miles from M&T while Lincoln Financial is around 100 miles. So according to you, NBC is bothered about 60 miles of travel :)

  17. daysend564 says: Nov 18, 2013 12:37 PM

Will Costas refer to them as the Redskins?

  18. bengals1 says: Nov 18, 2013 12:38 PM

Bengals @ Chargers would be a good game. But nobody would watch.

  19. fdallas says: Nov 18, 2013 12:38 PM

The entire flex schedule concept demonstrates an utter disregard for the most dedicated fans of all, the ones in the seats. They pay a ton of money well in advance to see a particular game at a scheduled time. There are potential conflicts with work schedules and travel plans costing even more than the ticket. None of this means anything to the NFL who would ideally like to be able to change with as little notice as possible. Watch the self imposed limitations slip away as the $ get more attractive.

Way to stay classy there. RGIII is ranked 8th in the league in passing yards and is the QB of the 5th ranked offense in league. Exactly how many yards have you thrown for in the league this year bucrightoff?

That’s because they’re hoping the Lions can get healthy at home and Philly can keep winning into the following week. Shady/DeSean v. Megatron/Suh is as good a matchup viewer-wise (SF-Seattle already done) as you could hope for in Week #14.

  25. kastout11 says: Nov 18, 2013 1:23 PM

I can definitely see why they will not change the game. Philly is a big market, but Arizona is not. Wash/NYG will garner huge ratings. I think the Philly/AZ game will be the better games and certainly a more important game, but I think NBC made the right decision.

  26. l0glcalv0icesays says: Nov 18, 2013 3:09 PM

Smart decision by the NFL. Everybody loves to watch the Redskins, who are GOD’S CHOSEN TEAM. Can’t wait to watch them spank the Giants on national television. #HTTR

  27. athwartships says: Nov 18, 2013 3:19 PM

So this decision is based purely on the overhyped RG3?

How do they figure this guy still have market value? #1 pick wasted, ROY wasted…let it go and move on.

  28. metintodd says: Nov 18, 2013 3:24 PM

Is NBC kidding? Who is going to watch this game? I’d rather watch the BS passing for news on the FOX Noise Channel.

  29. edithpiaf51 says: Nov 18, 2013 3:24 PM

As a Marketing professor, I will say that the only reason for the scheduling of primetime games or flexing schedules is to get the best viewer market with the largest reach audience. It is all about capitalism, money, and advertising. The NY market is one of the hugest markets. Also the reason that the giants and packers were flexed for the broncos and chiefs is because the broncos and chiefs are the best two teams in the league and that was a big draxing for viewers. that was one of the most watched games and it brought in lots of revenue and profit for the network, the league, and the advertisers.

    Elis drooping lip…???

What does that mean? making fun of Eli’s physical appearance is mean and cruel. He has no drooping lip. Not sure what that is all about. but Yes regardless, he has 2 superbowl rings and he is still great. Also there is nothinng wrong with his physical appearance. that is like making fun of a person with a physical disability.

Actually, you’re wrong. Not because you can’t admit that 2 years constitutes “recent”, but because networks usually protect Cowboys games. As a Cowboy slurper, you should know that.

  35. dboys6 says: Nov 18, 2013 5:14 PM

@justintuckrule WHAT? Like I said, Cowboys will never get flexed out of primetime. Don’t care about “surpluses”, No one does, all we seen was an irrelevant “recent” super bowl team get flexed out of primetime with their same “MVP” quarterback playing, and then they turn around and put his brother in that spot. Pathetic!!!!

Your command of the English language and reading comprehension leaves much to be desired. Who’s talking about “surpluses”?

Anyway, I looked up the word “pathetic” and it showed a QB fumbling an extra point snap. I guess nothing is more pathetic than that. I’m sure you can guess who that was. Not as “recent” as my team’s SB wins but pretty “recent” nonetheless.

The reports were Cardinals-Eagles was going to be moved to prime time, except it would have created a big problem for FOX since Giants-Redskins could not be moved to 1:00 PM not because of Dolphins-Jets already being there (NFL has had the Jets and Giants both at 1:00 in the past), but I believe because of stadium situations in moving a game at FedEx Field (any Redskins game previously moved out of SNF in Washington has been played in the 4:00-ish time slot) that would have prevented that game being moved to 1:00 PM from 8:30. In addition, doing so would have meant the CBS-Owned station in Washington would have been unable to air Broncos-Chiefs in the 4:25 slot there because of Giants-Redskins being at 4:05 PM on FOX.

The bigger problem was FOX would only have had two games at 1:00, and both (Bears-Vikings and Bucs-Panthers) involve teams that are currently 2-8, and the “singleheader” network is restricted as to how much of the country can get games that begins at 4:05 (to protect the doubleheader network). FOX would have been fine if they could have moved Falcons-Bills from 4:05 to 1:00 PM, but as that game is being played in Toronto, the NFL’s contract with Canadian television requires Falcons-Bills to be at 4:05 due to that game airing nationally in Canada. The fact that game has to be at 4:05 is apparently why the Giants-Redskins game is staying in prime time.

Best game that NBC should have picked was Cardinals-Eagles. Both teams are over 500 and are competing for playoff spots. The 2013 Giants are pretenders at best and the 2013 Redskins are unwatchable. Giants-Redskins on Sunday night football is must not watch TV. I will be watching something else that night. Game should have been flexed to 1pm. When the Giants-Packers were on at 4:25 on Sunday I didn’t watch that either because that should have been changed to 1pm. Jets were on at 1pm too. To me no problem if the Jets and Giants play the same time. Its been done before. Mets and Yankees play the same time all the time so why are the Jets and Giants different.

  43. lonestarr022 says: Nov 21, 2013 7:25 PM

there’s pros and cons, its ny and dc’s markets, and some still watch the games even when they are bad. Plus, there are no great alternatives for nbc this weekend since they cant have the broncos-chiefs game.

As far as thursday games goign away, not going to happen, they make bank for the nfl and its network, in fact they may add a second one.

One idea that might improve the quality of thursday games is to give teams the sunday before them off.

  44. wolfpacka42 says: Nov 23, 2013 4:29 AM

To Lonestarr022. I agree that to improve Thursday Night Football that there should be a bye given the Sunday before. If I was the head coach I would play all of my backups on Thursday Night Football and not announce it till the game starts. I would dress all of my regular players and just put in the backups. The NFL would not like that at all and might think about looking into it.
