Player microphones weren’t on for comments directed to Trent Williams

Mic

As the NFL continues to review the alleged exchange between umpire Roy Ellison and Redskins tackle Trent Williams, there’s an important point to keep in mind regarding the fact that guard Kory Lichtensteiger was wearing a microphone during the game.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Lichtensteiger was wearing a microphone for enhanced ambient audio. Sound captured that way isn’t recorded by the NFL or by the broadcast network, and the microphone is open only from the time the huddle breaks until the ball is snapped. At all other times, the microphones are not absorbing sound.

This means that there would not be recorded audio of whatever Ellison said to Williams, at least not from the microphones being worn by the players.
