Steve Smith, Aqib Talib go at it

Steve Smith AP

Round One of the Steve Smith vs. Aqib Talib battle goes to Smith. And it’s a 10-8 round.

Smith beat Talib in the first quarter of Monday night’s Patriots-Panthers battle not only by catching passes, but also by being the one who came out on top in a brief skirmish between them: After a Smith reception, Talib grabbed Smith’s ankle and wouldn’t let go, Smith responded by grabbing Talib and knocking off his helmet, and the resulting skirmish ended up with Talib getting a 15-yard penalty.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick benched Talib to get him to cool off, but quickly put him back in the game to cover Smith again. Sure enough, the two continued to go at it after another play and had to be separated.

The drive with all that action ended with Cam Newton hitting Brandon LaFell on a nine-yard touchdown pass to give the Panthers a 7-0 lead, and Smith deserves a lot of credit: In addition to those 15 penalty yards on Talib, Smith caught two passes for 47 yards on the drive.

Talib and Smith have gone head to head several times in the past and have never liked each other. Their matchup tonight is one of the key battles in the Patriots-Panthers game, and it’s a battle that Smith is winning.

Jonathan Martin is offended by this

    Patriot way

  4. teamobijuan says: Nov 18, 2013 9:10 PM

This is going to be fun to watch. I hope Smith torches him for 200 yards and a pair of scores.

  5. igotgamenj says: Nov 18, 2013 9:11 PM

If that happened to Jonathan Martin he would sue

  6. nfl4days says: Nov 18, 2013 9:12 PM

    Talib caused both altercations.

  7. thepftpoet says: Nov 18, 2013 9:14 PM

Still a better love story than twilight

  8. dondada10 says: Nov 18, 2013 9:15 PM

Talib has never been able to cover Smith one-on-one and he’s being a baby about it.

  9. joetoronto says: Nov 18, 2013 9:15 PM

When you sign a turd, don’t be surprised when he acts like s turd.

    Right, Bill?

  11. sbc85 says: Nov 18, 2013 9:16 PM

Steve Smith gets in a fight pretty much every single game, yet somehow the other person always gets the flag. It’s quite impressive sorcery.

  12. extinctionburst says: Nov 18, 2013 9:17 PM

I can’t wait to read more lame Johnathan Martin jokes in this thread.

  13. ottawabrave91 says: Nov 18, 2013 9:18 PM

no Johnathan Martin will let it go all game, then complain 2 months later

  14. jacunn2000 says: Nov 18, 2013 9:23 PM

Steve Smith is awesome. Scared of no man. Talib would have probably shot him if he had a weapon. Coward.

  15. lanman11 says: Nov 18, 2013 9:24 PM

I had no idea Carolina was such a dirty team. They are racking up penalties because of the extra curricular activity like head shots, hands to the face, facemasks, etc. WOW!

  16. allday420ap says: Nov 18, 2013 9:25 PM

I blame the media blamers, personally

  17. apkyletexas says: Nov 18, 2013 9:30 PM

Talib looked like Jeff Van Gundy laying on the court during the ’98 playoffs grabbing Alonzo Mourning by the ankle.

    What a buffoon.

  18. badgerbuck says: Nov 18, 2013 9:36 PM

Kick them both out of the game don’t need to see that crap.that’s the problem kick them Out and that stuff stops real fast.

  19. jmorand47 says: Nov 18, 2013 9:42 PM

You know, maybe it’s just me, but why is it that Steve Smith gets into it with everybody. I think I know who the problem is.

  20. shayeezy says: Nov 18, 2013 9:47 PM

I’ve been saying it ever since the pats picked him up.. talib is a very good player, but he is not a shutdown corner. he’s at his best with safety help over top.

  21. vots50 says: Nov 18, 2013 9:48 PM

The reason Smith always seems to be involved in these things and not get flagged, is because Smith just gets in people’s heads and the weak ones can’t handle it. Not a panthers fan BTW, just a displaced packers fan in Charlotte.

Hothead vs. Peanuthead for all the marbles

  23. rodgers419 says: Nov 18, 2013 9:55 PM

Smith is a has-been. Talib is a star entering the prime of his career. I can see why Steve is upset.

  24. bostonian13 says: Nov 18, 2013 9:55 PM

^^^ Talib is not a shutdown corner?!?! Cut the crap…

  25. brazzz01 says: Nov 18, 2013 9:55 PM

Told you they are nothing without Spygate.

The Brady you’re seeing now is the 6th round draft pick that he always was without the cheating.

    Should have kept Tebow.

  26. killitandeatit says: Nov 18, 2013 9:59 PM

Cam Newton was just tackled exactly like Drew Brees was tackled by Ahmad Brooks yesterday but no flag ? hmmmm..

  27. pilot2011 says: Nov 18, 2013 9:59 PM

89 deserves a statue at Bank of America stadium. The dude’s been playing for the same team for half a century and still ballin.

  28. miamizombie says: Nov 18, 2013 10:00 PM

Kirk Cameron was kinda cool on Growing Pains

  29. brazzz01 says: Nov 18, 2013 10:00 PM

Peyton Manning is a REAL MAN’s QB.

Brady is a wussy who belongs out of football like the rest of the losers drafted in the 6th round. Maybe the Pats should set their sights a little higher than the 6th round if they want to find a QB who isn’t a weakling and who can win games without cheating.

  30. nomoreseasontix says: Nov 18, 2013 10:01 PM

Talib is, and always has been, a punk. Smith isn’t much better, but with more talent.

  31. veence69 says: Nov 18, 2013 10:02 PM

They’re both insufferable and believe they’re better than they are. In the end though, if Steve Smith has a problem with someone every game, he’s the problem. Get over yourself, Steve. You’re on the downslope of a mediocre career and this is all we’ll remember of you..

  32. harrycanyon says: Nov 18, 2013 10:07 PM

Smith celebrates a first down like he just won the superbowl or something. He is such a punk. Always fighting. Always running his mouth. Lately he is deep ball or nothing anyway.

  33. killitandeatit says: Nov 18, 2013 10:19 PM

Second half under way and the Patriots cheap shot, leg whip, take out the Carolina’s D.E. Guess what ? no flag. hmmm…

  34. RE LEE says: Nov 18, 2013 10:24 PM

Brazz01—- such a fixation on brady. What has brady been doing to your team?… Nothing pretty I bet. Brady will be a legend for years and where would you be? Still babbling about spygate in your senility and people thinking it’s about Nixon or Bill Clinton. Sad….

  35. natijim235 says: Nov 18, 2013 10:32 PM

    how exciting

  36. titansbro says: Nov 18, 2013 10:35 PM

Nice leg whip by Cannon to likely end Johnson’s season. Patriot Way!

later this week the panthers organization will be fined for the ‘black out’

  39. patriotinvasion says: Nov 18, 2013 11:38 PM

No shame in that loss. Great battle on both sides. Panthers made enough plays to win. Bigger game next week.

  40. forsbergler says: Nov 18, 2013 11:40 PM

Game on the line 3 time out game on the line and what do you see? Multiple dirt balls, inaccurate throws when forced to throw over 5 YDS and a throw so BAD the refs couldn’t even call pass interference in the end zone when Gronk was get mauled by the safety. Another well managed game by the best game manager of all time. TOM BRADY
Once again Tom Brady showed us what he is, TOM AVG.

TOM BRADY = ALMOST AS GOOD AS ALEX SMITH AT MANAGING GAMES!!!!

  41. forsbergler says: Nov 19, 2013 12:06 AM

I love Steve smith. He’s got attitude for a WR, he kinda reminds me of Hienz Ward except SS is actually good. I loved Taliban trying to get tough early and then costing his team a TD because he was getting man handled by a guy 5 9″

    GG Carolina

  42. sweetnlow44 says: Nov 19, 2013 12:59 AM

How in the world does Steve Smith not get any taunting penalties?

  43. taintedsaints2009 says: Nov 19, 2013 1:01 AM

I love this and wish it happened more often. To much love and respect in the nfl. So few REAL rivalries where opponents legitimately hate each other.

    I rather enjoyed it.

Helps build the hatred, as is said in hockey.

  45. guitarkevin says: Nov 19, 2013 8:47 AM

Talib made himself look like the antagonist.

    =====================================================

Good question – the bs he pulled against Janoris Jenkins definitely should have resulted in penalties/taunting (ironically it was called the following week on Golden Tate during MNF for a lot less).

  47. thefiesty1 says: Nov 19, 2013 10:10 AM

Smith should have charges drawn up against Talib for assault.

  48. pekkle007 says: Nov 19, 2013 10:51 AM

Too bad Steve doesn’t win the TD battle. I think scoring a TD would’ve been better than fighting.
