Vikings to keep on trucking with Ponder at QB

Christian Ponder AP

Apparently, the Vikings do not believe their quarterback position is broken again, thus do not plan to fix it.

Vikings coach Leslie Frazier announced today that Christian Ponder would start Sunday against the Packers.

We are looking forward to him leading our team to victory, and other guys around him stepping up,” Frazier told reporters.

Ponder’s coming off a 53.0-rating day against the Seahawks, though he was better in his previous three starts than the three to start the season — which led to them benching him for Matt Cassel and spending good money for a Josh Freeman rental.

Since reclaiming the starting job after Freeman was rushed into action for a start, Ponder has been acceptable at best. The fact they’re not even willing to look at Freeman with a 2-8 record makes you wonder what he’s showing them in practices and meetings.

And to think, they think the Packers are vulnerable because of quarterback issues.

freeman is showing them that Spielman was an idiot for signing him in the first place

  2. conormacleod says: Nov 20, 2013 1:13 PM

Does it matter? The first pick is going to be a QB, no matter who starts the last 6 games.

  3. eatitfanboy says: Nov 20, 2013 1:14 PM

Why would you take this as a sign that they don’t think their QB situation is broken?

Has it occurred to you that they now realize it’s so broken that there is no fix available on their current roster so why bother shuffling the lineup endlessly?

As a Viking fan I could care less if they win or lose. In fact, I hope they lose out the rest of the season. So Ponder starting isn’t such a bad thing. What I don’t understand is why keep Freeman on the team then? They just paid him $2M to sit the bench and now they truly don’t know what they have with him. They should start Freeman the rest of the year just to see what they have. They already know Ponder and Cassell are no better than backups. At least Freeman had shown potential in the past to be a starter. Give him another shot. You can’t throw him into a brand new offense and in 13 days expect him to have timing down. Not saying his performance was good at all but at least find out if he could make the transition and be useful down the road.

They’re either convinced that Ponder gives them the best chance to win or they’re convinced that he gives them the best chance to lose. Either way, I’m fine with it.

  6. The Great Ted Thompson the Genius says: Nov 20, 2013 1:22 PM

Ponder is the only quarterback on the current roster who has a chance to be on the roster next year. Freeman will be a free agent and Cassel has the right to opt out (I don’t think he’ll take a lot of time to make that decision). Ponder will be the backup next year, obviously, but it makes sense to get him as much playing time as possible because he might have to play next year.

  7. trollhammer20 says: Nov 20, 2013 1:23 PM

I was at the game last Sunday, and Ponder actually looked good for a time. Seattle committed to stopping Peterson, and that left him some openings he was able to exploit. The game was 17-13 late in the first half before a special teams breakdown left Wilson with enough time to finish a TD drive before half.

It did get ugly in the fourth quarter when, down by two scores, they had to abandon the run almost entirely.

Given they will find themselves up against a similar kind of team – Tolzien apparently looked pretty good against the Giants until late pressure forced a critical error – maybe they think he’ll have what it takes this week.

  8. sterling7 says: Nov 20, 2013 1:25 PM

New coaching staff, new team for next year, just wonder where the new quaterback (Bridgewater) and head coach will come from?

  9. fwippel says: Nov 20, 2013 1:25 PM

The only thing that makes sense is that Josh Freeman is woefully unprepared to take over at QB. Otherwise, there is no reason to go back to Ponder.

Ponder may have a good game, and the Vikings may win (if the defense actually shows up) because the Packers are missing Rodgers. But the reality is that Ponder isn’t consistent enough to go forward with as a starter. Too many mistakes too often. He may make a good backup someplace, but he’s not one of the top 32 QBs in the league.

As a Viking fan, the only thing left to look forward to is next spring’s draft and “with the second pick in the 2014 NFL draft, the Minnesota Vikings select quarterback, from Texas A&M, Johnny Manziel.”

  10. steelerben says: Nov 20, 2013 1:25 PM

We’ve seen what Cassell has to offer. And a backup quarterback that can win a game here and there but not be a consistent starter is something every team needs.

We’ve seen what Ponder has to offer and on his best days, he is able to throw on the move, make accurate short passes, and when pressed to make an intermediate to deep pass is inaccurate and turnover prone.

We’re seeing what Freeman has to offer with a world of talent but an inability to grasp an offense who’s play calling sheet is the size of a matchbook.

At this point in the season, with no chance of the playoffs and the Vikings not even playing competitive football, it makes sense to roll with the guy that knows the offense and can at least provide some upside. Once the season ends, at least two of the QB’s currently on the roster will not be. Who remains as the veteran backup for the rookie they undoubtedly will draft remains to be seen.

  11. darkneptune73 says: Nov 20, 2013 1:30 PM

Yep, signing Freeman was a bust. Can we get a refund on that 2 million dollars?

  12. obsessedvikingfan says: Nov 20, 2013 1:31 PM

Ponder did BEAT GB with Rodgers last year. He got hurt and Joe Webb lost to them.

Ponder may not be the QB of the future but he gives them the best chance to beat the worthless and classless Packers team.

Some may say if MN wins it is because Rodgers is out but hey, every team has starters out. It is not anyone’s fault besides the Packers that their best player is hurt and they can’t put a team on the field to beat the other team.

At least Viking fans are not talking about how people from Wisconsin are mating with relatives like the Packer fans on here do.

I don’t care if it ruins the draft order and I don’t care if it is because Rodgers is out. Beating the packers is important.

  13. hashtagfaith says: Nov 20, 2013 1:32 PM

Vikes think Ponder gives them the least likely chance to go all Joe Webb on them late in the season and ruin a perfectly good draft pick.

  14. gtodriver says: Nov 20, 2013 1:33 PM

Ponder has already proven he can defeat the Packers WITH Rodgers. Why not have him play the Packers without Rodgers?

He did it in game 17 last year when the playoffs were on the line for us and the Packers were playing for shot at a first round bye (even though filthy refuses to acknowledge the truth).

  15. obsessedvikingfan says: Nov 20, 2013 1:33 PM

Please not Manziel. I would rather have the Duck Marcus Mariota. Johnny football has so many other problems it wouldn’t be worth it.

  16. ravenswhat says: Nov 20, 2013 1:34 PM

Holy Jesus, did Freeman take them to the cleaners or what??

  17. southpaw2k says: Nov 20, 2013 1:34 PM

Aww, how cute. Leslie Frazier thinks that the Vikings have a viable quarterback on their roster. That’s just adorable.

  18. suns11111 says: Nov 20, 2013 1:34 PM

Spielman was not aware of the glitches in OFreemancare, therefore the towel boy will be loosing his job. I do not think Freeman CARES!

  19. kingpel says: Nov 20, 2013 1:37 PM

Bucs fans and media need to get off Schiano’s back about Josh Freeman now. The guy obviously sucks.

  20. lpd1964 says: Nov 20, 2013 1:38 PM

Does it really matter ? The QB of 2014 isn’t on this roster and it speaks volumes that Ponder gives this team the best chance to win. What the hell is wrong with Frazier when he is asked a question about Freeman ?

  21. trbowman says: Nov 20, 2013 1:43 PM

What Freeman is showing them in practices? Guy is the 3rd QB, probably takes like two snaps a week.

  22. 97wild says: Nov 20, 2013 1:44 PM

Great, another Ponder led loss. Start Cassel or Freeman for God’s sake!

  23. 6ball says: Nov 20, 2013 1:45 PM

    .

Ponder is a QB that would have benefited from some time on the bench like Tom Brady and Aaron Rogers.

    ==============================
Yeah, I also have concerns about Manziel’s behavior, but honestly, the guy has been the most consistently productive QB in college, and he’s done it against the best talent in college football in the SEC West.

I don’t always like how he handles himself, but he has great vision, throws accurately from the pocket or on the run. I think he’s the best QB in college football, and I’d take him ahead of Mariota or Bridgewater.

  25. gochargersgo says: Nov 20, 2013 1:47 PM

If Leslie Frazier is still the coach of that team come next season, then ownership has mental problems. I don’t think he has a clue what he’s doing out there.

  26. snowlock2013 says: Nov 20, 2013 1:54 PM

Why not stick with Ponder at this point? Its not like Freeman or Cassel will save the Vikings season. A purple win will all but guarantee the Cheese will not be playoff bound, so there’s that to look forward to. I guess if this is Ponder’s ride off into the sunset, and he’s taking the 2013 Packers with him, so be it. I’m in.

  30. gbmickey says: Nov 20, 2013 2:09 PM

Wisconsin vs Minnesota let the domination continue. The Pack will be going for the 8th win out of 9, while the Badgers will be going for 10 in a row. I can see why all the Minnesota posters are so bitter. It has to be demoralizing year after year watching your teams fail after boasting how good they were going to be. Embrace the suck!

  31. contra74 says: Nov 20, 2013 2:11 PM

Again…the Vikings want to LOSE this game in order to secure a top 3 draft pick. Not sure what kind of gloating there can be over a game that the Vikings WANT TO LOSE!

  32. whatjusthapped says: Nov 20, 2013 2:16 PM

Sad as it is, Ponder might be the best Qb on the Viking roster right now. The fact that they reached when they drafted him could be all the justification that Spielman needs to tell Frazier to start him the rest of the season.

Believe it or not, Spielman might be thinking that Ponder is going to back up whoever they are drafting in the spring so let’s get him as much playing time now as we can. If anyone had a lick of sense in Winter Park, they wouldn’t let Spielman draft anyone next spring, they would cut ties with Ponder and the jury is still out on Frazier.

  36. akboot says: Nov 20, 2013 2:35 PM

Cool, with this move, it may just guarantee us an early draft pick. Speilman had better get rid of frazier too. If even he has a job. I’d prefer Wolfe clean the whole house of these clowns. We shall see.

  37. ruvelligwebuike says: Nov 20, 2013 2:37 PM

Feel free to disagree, but Bridgewater is a better fit. Can you imagine a straight-shooting, Jack drinking, Texas kid in Minnesota? His head will explode the first time he gets an anonymous letter from a neighbor he’s never met telling him he needs to tone down the music. But at least they will shovel his driveway for him.

  38. buffaloviking says: Nov 20, 2013 2:44 PM

If they draft a QB and the current coaching staff is still employed, then nothing will change. A rookie QB needs to be developed. Frazier and Co cant do that, other than Favre we havent had a QB under Childress or Frazier. Thats a coaching issue. The Vikes have had plenty of QB come through, they all cant suck. Its more than hand off to AP. AP is good but 11 on 1 isnt going to work all the time.

COACHES NEED TO GO. Start from scratch, get ready for the new stadium.

  39. minnesnowda says: Nov 20, 2013 2:46 PM

Greg Childs is finally back in practice, it will be interesting to see how he performs and if he play in a game this year. Maybe this can be another solid target for MN to build on.

  40. joeyashwi says: Nov 20, 2013 2:50 PM

Serious question here: Is Ponder even among the top 45 QBs in the league? If Tebow can’t find a place on an NFL roster then it wouldn’t surprise me if Ponder is not on one come next year either.

Who the heck is our QB coach and why is he not taking any heat in all this mess? He is the one responsible for their performance and it seems they all perform the same. It’s like Norv Turner, he’s an excellent O.C. but put him in as a coach and he sucks. Same with Dom Capers, Wade Phillips and so on…

  44. pootytang66 says: Nov 20, 2013 3:19 PM

The Wilfs need to bring in Bill Parcels and give him full authority to run this team next year!!!

  45. deltaoracle says: Nov 20, 2013 3:54 PM

If Scott Tolzien had been QBing the Vikings the last few years with defenses worrying about the best RB in the game, he’d be getting talked about as a possibly elite QB.

  46. seaeagle707 says: Nov 20, 2013 3:54 PM

Very few QB’s have done well against the Legion of Boom, this year or last. If you look at the numbers, the low spot in passer rating for them has come against Seattle. I would expect Ponder’s stats to improve against GB. He may not be Peyton, but he does appear to be a guy that “could” hold his team together. With the season in the dumpster for the Vikes, it doesn’t make any sense for them to keep the QB carousel spinning.

Crosby is 23/27 for 85% this year and has made 5 from 50+ including a 57 yarder. Mason is fine. He was even honored as the NFC special teams player for last month.

Oh and who is Rubely? I think you mean T.J. Rubley – who was a Ron Wolf pickup from 17 years ago, so….. troll fail.

You think getting a higher draft pick that is the key to your problems? Your problems are much deeper than that…Losers!
