Wes Welker’s decision to leave the Patriots for the Broncos this offseason will be one of the main storylines of the week.

But not if he’s not playing.

After suffering a concussion in Sunday’s win over the Chiefs, Welker did not practice Wednesday, according to Mike Klis of the Denver Post. Tight end Julius Thomas was also held out, after being declared day-to-day with a knee strain.

Gaining medical clearance to return from a concussion is a layered process, as players will often be cleared to practice or for non-contact work before cleared to play by an independent neurologist. Welker was apparently on the field stretching, but not taking part in drills, which indicates he’s several steps away.
