Clay Matthews did the discount double check on fines

Green Bay Packers Clay Matthews commits a late hit on San Francisco 49ers Colin Kaepernick during their NFL season home opener football game in San Francisco Reuters

Clay Matthews apparently isn’t as dirty a player as some believed.

He’s also $23,250 richer, by virtue.

Matthews told Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com that he’s saved a lot of money on fines, with one rescinded and one cut in half.

Matthews said his Week One launch into 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, which initially cost him a $15,000 fine, was cut in half to $7,500.

He also said he won the appeal of his Week 10 fine for hitting Eagles quarterback Nick Foles, with appeals officer Matt Birk wiping out a $15,750 fine which he had only asked to be reduced.

“It was funny because he said I think you’re underselling yourself as far as my appeal,” Matthews said. “He’s like, ‘I don’t think you hit him with your head at all.’ I thought I hit him legally, so $15,000 was way too much. And he said, ‘Well, I don’t think you really did anything, so we’re going to take that away.’ So that was a good day.”

Those two were the only two fines Matthews has incurred this season, which is good news for players, who too often have misguided beliefs about the way the fine system actually works.

Fines should only be handed out to the obviously dirty plays. Instead every facemask or hard hit is a fine, and it’s ridiculous.

Essentially, the process is totally subjective and arbitrary. Ridiculous.

This storied, 13 championship winning franchise will lose this weekend to the hapless vikings. Ending their 2013 – 2014 playoff hopes. Want to know why? They only have one talented player on the team. Your QB’s getting old Pack fans.

Where does all this fine money go? Probably a dumb question, but if anyone can answer please let me know.

Because he’s been injured for half of it..

As a 9ers fan, the penalty was clear as day, but I don’t understand why he would have been fined. It wasn’t an excessively dirty hit, he just was late on his tackle and brought him down after he was out of bounds.
That being said, I don’t really see how the NFL can say that tackling a guy out of bounds by wrapping your arm around his neck is clean, but tackling a guy in bounds by wrapping your arm around his neck is dirty.
The only thing wrong with Clay’s tackle was that it was out of bounds, everything else about the tackle was just what we used to call football. But Brooks does it to Silver Boy Brees (Golden Boy was already taken) and it’s a penalty and worthy of 10 articles by Florio on how the 9ers don’t understand the rules.
RIP football as a tough guy sport.

It helps to be a pretty white boy.

Clay Matthews is as dirty as they get. He spouted snack for weeks about going after Kaepernick and then hit him out if bounds.

Hecdesrves to be injured fir being such a skank.

I bet Ahmad Brooks fine doesn’t get reduced that much. Of course he’s black.

    Charities… supposedly.

I’m not a dirty player, I just say I’m going to late hit someone all week then hit then out of bounds.

Boss Hogg could not have come up with something as crooked as the NFL has

And then Matthews wiped his mouth and got up from his knees.

Matthews is as dirty as they come. The hit on Kaeper was completely classless.

Some guys are the face of the league some aren’t. Long blond locks, roided WWE-type body, a face which appeals to white America….

    Pretty simple and very predictable.

Clay Mathews is a better father than Adrian Peterson.

Next time double the fine so you can get full price.. Duh, dumb NFL… That will stop Matthews from “shaving off the price”

——————————————————————————————————————————————————— yes the packers will probably lose to the vikings this week your right, and our season is probably over. but you wanna know what i’m right about? next year when we start our next shot at a possible championship season, the vikings will still be holding onto faith that one of the three clowns they have listed at the qb position will pan out, and the vikings will be looking at a bismal season again. it’s almost always a (better luck next year for the vikings) this is a rare season for the packers since the 90’s. from a packers fans from the forest gregg era. good luck with your superbowl game this sunday viking fans.

Fine money is given to charity, at the NFL’s discretion. But it’s all give away. The hit on Colin should have been doubled. He “launched” himself after they were both out of bounds.

I love how people act like Brees gets special treatment, but isn’t regarded as prolific. Brees had ONE call that has ever been questioned & those that hate him, suddenly think he gets the Brady treatment.

It was roughing the passer btw.

  22. biggestsaintsfanever says: Nov 23, 2013 10:11 PM

Brooks hit was higher than Mathews, and Mathews tackled a RB, while Brooks tackled a QB, still in the pocket. I know idiots like Kleppnasty will have a hard time understanding this, but try real hard.
