Graham’s double-handed dunk bends goalpost

Getty Images

The Saints have taken the lead in Atlanta, thanks to a 44-yard catch-and-run on a throw from quarterback Drew Brees to tight end Jimmy Graham.

The play was good, the punctuation was even better.

Graham Darryl Dawkinsed the goal post with a two-handed dunk over the crossbar, knocking the thing crooked.  The game was delayed while maintenance workers brought out a giant level and evened the thing out.

While players no longer may celebrate with props, the league makes an exception for routines like the Lambeau Leap and the goalpost dunk.  If players are going to knock the goalpost crooked, however, the dunk needs to go — or at a minimum a dunk that knocks the goalpost crooked needs to be penalized.

    Should have been 15 yards.

  2. getatmeplease says: Nov 21, 2013 9:34 PM

If Suh did this he’d be suspended for the rest of the season.

That’s okay but do so much as a salt shaker with the football and you get fined and penalized, yay nfl…

Totally agree Mr. Florio. Any celebration that causes a delay should be penalized.

  7. goldrush36 says: Nov 21, 2013 9:39 PM

28 teams or more get a delay of game penalty at the minimum for something like this

Cannot wait for someone to pull it down.

It rolled a little too easy…’s a crazy idea…..make sure the bolts are all tight after its been checked level BEFORE the game starts…..

    Was funny though.

  12. titansbro says: Nov 21, 2013 9:48 PM

Amazed so many people think it should be a penalty. Lighten up folks. Should it be a “dunking too hard” penalty when a bball player breaks the rim &/or glass?

  13. cocheese000 says: Nov 21, 2013 9:49 PM

the competition committee will have all dunks banned by next year. book it.

  14. theysone says: Nov 21, 2013 9:51 PM

Should be fined at least $16,000.

  15. ballboy48 says: Nov 21, 2013 9:51 PM

Just make the post, so they won’t bend.

    RIP goal post dunk.

  18. northeastkiller says: Nov 21, 2013 9:55 PM

Yeah, why not – poor widdle Favre never touched the ball in OT so we had to change that, why not have another rule change because a positive thing for the Saints happened.

  22. keylimelight says: Nov 21, 2013 10:02 PM

That’s Jimmy second time he’s bent the goalpost in his career. If he’s not careful, he’s going to ruin it for the rest of us.

Dial it back a notch, Jimmy.

  23. ilovefoolsball says: Nov 21, 2013 10:04 PM

He was just redecorating that circus tent of a stadium

  24. thestrategyexpert says: Nov 21, 2013 10:06 PM

So if the Defense needs a rest late in a game, then just tear down the whole post with one good slam and get the free time!

  25. anicra says: Nov 21, 2013 10:08 PM

I personally all in favor of any and all celebrations, including so called taunting ones. However, when you have to stop the game to fix something because of the celebration, should be 15 yards.

  26. xxchaos32xx says: Nov 21, 2013 10:09 PM

C’mon guys, I’d say the bending the goal post during a celebration is a bit excessive, lol.

  27. natijim235 says: Nov 21, 2013 10:09 PM

what a tool – stick to fb

  28. genericuser8888 says: Nov 21, 2013 10:14 PM

Graham is doing the Falcons a favor. They want a new stadium, and Graham’s trying to demonstrate how flimsy and in decay the current stadium is.

In all seriousness though, I fully expect the NFL to institute a new rule in the offseason based on Graham’s behavior.

  29. lovetohate12 says: Nov 21, 2013 10:16 PM

Suspend Sean Payton for the rest of the year!

  31. bullethead527 says: Nov 21, 2013 10:20 PM

He should get a two game ban, I mean they can split them up for the rest of the season, preferably week 14 and week 16. (nice even numbers)

  32. chut26 says: Nov 21, 2013 10:20 PM

In light of the situation the league has announced it fined Graham for making Drew Brees wait while they fixed it.

  33. jjackwagon says: Nov 21, 2013 10:21 PM

Probably ought to leave the dunking to those that can do it properly. If you can’t jump that high find another way to celebrate.

  39. hansenbrothers says: Nov 21, 2013 10:47 PM

  40. zonon85 says: Nov 21, 2013 10:52 PM

Well that’s an obvious technical foul….

  41. raideralex99 says: Nov 21, 2013 10:55 PM

Wow … Saints can do anything and not worry about getting a penalty. Holding in the backfield the pick by graham … those are out in the open … how can the refs miss them?

  42. reppster says: Nov 21, 2013 10:56 PM

Anyone who thinks a pentaly should have happened is just crazy. Come on people!!!

  43. plumcrazy73 says: Nov 21, 2013 11:04 PM

I do agree that sometimes the league goes crazy with the fines and penalties and such but this one deserves one. Anyone who says otherwise to me is probably just a Saints fan who does not want to take off the Rose colored glasses. I would say the same if it were a player from my team that did it.

  44. jbaxt says: Nov 21, 2013 11:29 PM

Is it ironclad that the NFL made up delays for commercials but a player does it and it’s a penalty? So you’re going to penalize a guy so you can take in another billion in revenue for his “penalty”???

I’m confused. I wish my mistakes provided such a huge rate of return.

  45. cballlv11 says: Nov 21, 2013 11:29 PM

  46. footballchic777 says: Nov 21, 2013 11:31 PM

  47. gromgrimfist says: Nov 21, 2013 11:40 PM

should be a penalty if you bend the goal post

  49. flexx91 says: Nov 22, 2013 12:01 AM

Quite sure the competition committee is looking at this one. It will be a 15 yd. penalty next year.

  50. junglerat524 says: Nov 22, 2013 12:03 AM

    Build them stronger.

  51. arrowgargantuan says: Nov 22, 2013 12:04 AM

Yep, we definitely need another rule.

  52. purplengold says: Nov 22, 2013 12:06 AM

Connect the crossbar to the support post with springs, let the kids have some fun.

  53. marcinhouston says: Nov 22, 2013 12:08 AM

Falcon’s fault. There were probably some loose bolts or a bad installation to the goal post. Trust me, a 10 inch steel beam can support 250lbs weight if properly installed. This ain’t a basketball hoop its a giant thick metal beam. The questions should be why the Falcons put fans under an unsecure goal post. Probably to cut corners to afford Matt Ryan’s inflated contract.

  54. marcinhouston says: Nov 22, 2013 12:10 AM

Jimmy Graham can’t bend 10 inch metal beams. He isn’t Superman. The Falcons probably left a bolt loose, either incompetence or malice hoping to hurt Graham.

  55. iltibido says: Nov 22, 2013 12:11 AM

Jonathan Martin said only Bullies bend Goal Posts.

  56. calicokiller49 says: Nov 22, 2013 12:17 AM

  57. tdubdizzle says: Nov 22, 2013 1:09 AM

  58. grillmarks says: Nov 22, 2013 1:29 AM

“28 teams or more get a delay of game penalty at the minimum for something like this.”

Since when have the saints been a darling of the NFL?

  59. icecubeusedtobeangry says: Nov 22, 2013 3:56 AM

Every team in the NFL but the Saints and maybe the Packers pull 15 yards for this at minimum. Just because it rained in a city almost a decade ago they still can do no wrong.

  60. klutch14u says: Nov 22, 2013 4:13 AM

Well he didn’t “bend” it, that’d have been something. He knocked it off level and I agree, it should be at least a delay of game penalty. Of course it’s be a worthless “on the ensuing kickoff” variety.

  61. farealz says: Nov 22, 2013 5:07 AM

Please! Everything in the GA Dump is cheap, from the cheesy plastic seats to the goal posts. Cheap construction probably with shoddy Home Depot building materials! No wonder they want a new dome.

  62. allhailkingflacco says: Nov 22, 2013 6:30 AM

In the future if this happens again the player should be penalized by being taped to the goal post for the remainder of the game.

  63. seachicken64 says: Nov 22, 2013 6:40 AM

Maybe the goalpost was mocking him and got what it deserved. There are always two sides to every story. The truth is usually somewhere in the middle.

  64. cspsrbums says: Nov 22, 2013 7:16 AM

They should penalize all celebrations, defense, offense, TD, first downs, that’s there job to score they get paid millions to do it. Anything more then a high five should get a penalty. Just hand the ball to the ref and walk back to your position. As a Firefighter maybe I should rescue a child and dance in the front yard and spike him/her. They are adults and professionals act like it.

  65. doublezero74 says: Nov 22, 2013 7:32 AM

If it was Gronk the patriots would have been denied the TD and assessed a 50 yrd penalty. So it seems this year.

  66. cometkazie says: Nov 22, 2013 7:56 AM

Jimmy’s dunks are such a welcome relief to the “Look at me, ain’t I great” shuffle steps so many do after a TD.

    Keep a going, Jimmy!

  67. wttoolman says: Nov 22, 2013 8:19 AM

Could you imagine if Dez Bryant, or one of the Cowboys did this?? 50 yard penalty, immediate ejection from the game, 6 game suspension, Jerry Jones press conference, etc…

  68. dublindemonszfl says: Nov 22, 2013 8:55 AM

75,000 $ fine comin up. He should be kicked out of sports.

  69. samapoc says: Nov 22, 2013 9:00 AM

LOL at the haters. I’m sure the NFL will make a rule about this as it’s actually dangerous in addition to delaying the game.

  70. baltimorons says: Nov 22, 2013 9:04 AM

It should be penalized for being a lame celebration.

  71. jonnyfootball82 says: Nov 22, 2013 9:04 AM

  72. jimmyt says: Nov 22, 2013 9:16 AM

Of course it bent, his lard ass was hanging on it.

  73. jdavisevo says: Nov 22, 2013 9:19 AM

Wouldn’t tilted be more appropriate? Bending the goal posts would be quite a feat 🙂

  74. cometkazie says: Nov 22, 2013 9:26 AM

I would think if the goalposts were anchored properly, this would not have happened and the refs, or whoever checks the field beforehand, which I assume they do, should have caught it.

  75. canmannac says: Nov 22, 2013 9:44 AM

Saints should have received two extra points for artistic merit…

  78. a49erfan77 says: Nov 22, 2013 10:32 AM

They should have just made Hartley kick the PAT with crooked uprights and then fixed it during the TV timeout.

  79. fanofevilempire says: Nov 22, 2013 10:45 AM

is a double handed dunk the same as a two handed dunk?

  80. landisdadof4 says: Nov 22, 2013 10:50 AM

Clearly you Saints haters who think we never get called for penalties didn’t see the game where Ingram was flagged for delay of game. All he did was slam the ball to the ground and it moved maybe 3 feet at most. Its a judgement call as most penalties are. Get over it.

  81. ratsfoiledagain says: Nov 22, 2013 12:01 PM

    jimmyt says: Nov 22, 2013 9:16 AM

Well then, that’s a technical foul. Did the Falcons get to shoot their free throw?

  82. phaktor333 says: Nov 22, 2013 12:11 PM

My logic states that if an organization as powerful as the NFL can pay out almost $1B to injured football players, they can pony up the greenbacks to create a goal post that is impervious to wind and the occasional windmill dunk.

  83. bigbadal21 says: Nov 22, 2013 12:13 PM

He did not tilt the goalpost from dunking the football. He tilted the post from hanging from it. Should have been a penalty.

  84. Go-Hawks! says: Nov 22, 2013 12:20 PM

“Should it be a “dunking too hard” penalty when a bball player breaks the rim &/or glass?”

This is football. A tight-end has no good reason to put the ball through the up-rights. Only the kicker should put the ball through the up-rights. In basketball dunking is part of the game and so breaking the rim/glass is going to happen. In football there is no football reason to ever touch the cross bar of the up-rights.

Celebrating a touchdown is fine. Bending the up-rights is not fine.

  85. cowboycjn says: Nov 22, 2013 12:37 PM

More examples of dumb hater fans – just so jealous of the Saints, they allow garbage to come out of their brains. Did you see the close-up shot of how their goal post was built? It was in sections with bolts to tighten up the sections, a flimsily design post to start, then as someone mentioned – don’t you think the thing should have been secured (tight) before the game started? If we gonna ban that – then we have to ban the Packers jumping up on the stadium wall, the salsa dance, the AR double check, the Cam superman unveiling, the kiss of the arms by 49’s. Oh and lets also make it wrong for the fans to make too much noise or practice their chant during the games. Yes, people can pay sky high prices to sit with ear muffs on and no speaking allowed in the stadium. What a bunch of dorks.

  86. killxswitch says: Nov 22, 2013 12:49 PM

Maybe Arthur Blank should’ve paid more than $3.50 per goal post.
