Jerry Jones says Jason Garrett is guaranteed back next year

AP

There is apparently no hot seat in Dallas.

According to Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones just told reporters that coach Jason Garrett would return next year, regardless how the team finishes this season.

That’s quite a statement for a guy who presides over a 5-5 team, one which seems to thrive on will-he-or-won’t-he drama, and the ever-present possibility that he could change his mind.

Garrett’s 26-24 as a head coach, and spent the offseason floundering about after his offensive play-calling authority was stripped away from him.

But Jones is apparently confident enough in the direction to offer a mandate now, when things could easily get worse.

  1. Of course he will be. Do you have any idea how difficult it is to find someone with enough credibility to be accepted as a head coach, that is willing to have no real personnel control, will do all the day to day work of a head coach, and still call the plays that the owner wants him to?

  2. I’m all for stability and patience but Jason’s teams don’t play with any heart. He doesn’t have the ability to get a team to play at a high level when the pressure’s on and the chips are down.

  3. Jerry’s more interested in having team control than winning Super Bowls.
Such a great historical franchise. What a shame.

  4. The Cowboys are 133-133 since the start of 1998. I don’t know about you or me, but if I was that mediocre at my job as Jerry is at running the Cowboys, I’d be fired.

  5. I am sure there are a lot of people in Washington, New York and Philadelphia who are happy to hear that. The Dallas Cowboys commit to underachieving for yet another year. You had the talent, Jerry! It is too bad you are going to end up bringing in a real football guy to help rebuild your team AGAIN instead of taking you to a Super Bowl when your superstars were in their prime.

  6. @fissels: I assume you are a frustrated fan. His teams play as hard as any I have seen on the field. Heart is not the issue. Players, strategy, decision making are more prescient. Not saying these have all been wrong–but when you don’t win, the second guessing is never ending. It’s never as simple as the coach, scheme, GM. Not matter what the know nothings who spew constantly here (including all the writers), to be a real winner, you need the players, great coaching, and a little luck, a little bit of the stars lining up–listen to those who have experienced it, they will tell you the same thing. Dallas is lacking in some areas, and luck has not been their friend. Don’t forget that early on, this very blog was posting articles about Brady and they still are going on about Roethlisberger. Why? Well, Brady started winning, Ben has not. At least this year, they cannot slam Romo, all the ire of the ‘real experts’ has been focused on Jerry Jones.

  7. I’m not buying this public display of affection. If the eagles or giants win this division at 9-7, jerry just might change his tune.

  8. Good move Jerry. Signed every fan of the the other 31 teams in the NFL. While your at it extend the GM”s contract for infinity and beyond you crazy ole son of a gun!

  9. Mediocrity we are here to stay! This current set up obviously isnt working! We need a coach that will light a fire under these players! Sorry but 8-8 with this much talent should not warrant him keeping a job. Sad that we are doomed as long as Jerry is alive…

  10. May the pairing of GM Jones and HC Garrett be in place for the next couple decades.
The icing on the cake would be to keep Romo the starting QB for next couple decades too.

    Long live Jerry Jones!

  11. Monte Kiffin needs to be the first one to go. Dude allows record numbers every week including the bye week.

  12. I’ve never seen an owner in any sport as insecure as Jerrah.

Always feels the need to ‘guarantee’ someone is safe or proclaim this guy or that to be better than he is.

Here’s an idea for your team to progress – hire an actual GM, and stay invisible in the background.

  13. I’m a “DIE HARD” fan that has grown to accept the things that will not change and the wisdom to know the difference!!! With that being said I don’t brag or gloat on my Cowboys… I just watch the games and drink plenty beer!!! There will be life after GM. Jerry Jones… Till then have a cold one!!!

  14. I actually think keeping Garrett is one of Jones’ few smart decisions and and I’m not being sarcastic. I can’t think of many coaches who have won more with less than Garrett (maybe just Coughlin).

My Giants are not that good but there are only a handful of Cowboys that are actually better than anyone on my 4-6 team. Ware, Dez, Witten, Murray (always injured though), Tyron Smith and Lee. Romo and Eli are a wash. The rest of Dallas is garbage.

  15. @rjguerra….when will you guys start blaming those mediocre underachieving players? Everyone was blaming Rob Ryan and now his D is tearing it up in NO. Now it’s Kiffin’s fault? At some point ya gotta say….”damn these players suck!” Sean Lee is the only quality player on that defense. Ware is on the down side of the hill and the rest of them just flat out suck. Also time to move on from Romo, Witten and Austin. But hey….as an Eagles fan…I say keep them all and keep dreamin!

  16. Essentially a Norv-like rut.

Just good enough to keep him around, just bad enough to miss the playoffs. Just good enough to give false hope with excuses (“we had a lot of injuries this year” etc) but just bad enough to get a sorta high draft pick which helps your team.

    Start over already.

Good, save Gruden for a more deserving team!
    —————–
    Here’s the phone call:

John it’s Jerry Jones how…..(gruden interrupts)
Jerry, will you remain the GM if I become the head coach?

    Jerry: why yes I woul….click….

  18. No way he is back next year. unless they go to and/or win the SB. And this is not happening. You are looking at either gruden, sumlin, or briles as the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. But for godsakes jerry , please, on behalf of all cowboy’s fans, stop talking.

  19. JJ is only saying that now so the players and Garrett will feel stable. However, if the Cowboys fail to make the playoffs he’ll offer Garrett his old job back as OC and say hello to Chucky.

  20. Apegues33 says “we are doomed as long as Jerry is alive.”

I hate to be the one to break this sad news to you, apegues, but after Jerry is gone his witless son, Stephen, who was born on third base and thinks he hit a triple, will be running things. For decades. And decades.

  21. Thank you Jerruh!… Now if you will just sign Romo for a few more years, and live as GM for another 50 years, the rest of the NFC East can just focus on the real competition.

  22. Hahahahaha good ole Jerry has turned the Cowboys into the NFL’s running joke. I’d feel more confident as a Jaguars fan than a Cowboys fan. At least the Jags can clean house and get on the right track. As long as Jerry is the owner the Cowboys are screwed. Jerry cares more about his pissing contest than he does winning.

  23. As an Eagles fan, I really hated Jerry Jones in the 90’s but for the past decade I have really grown to appreciate him.

  24. Hopefully this guy was asked a direct question by some reporter and just answered it. If this guy actually volunteered something like this, then it is an indictment as to how bad he actually is at what he does. There is no reason to be volunteering information like that at this point in the season regardless. This is also a perfect reason why owners should stay out of the spotlight. Just because you have enough money to own a football team doesn’t mean you have the brains to run one.

Probably the worst owner in the sport….as a Giants fan I do feel bad for Cowboy’s fans, because no fan should have to put up with this garbage. I’m also a Mets fan so I have a clue as to what you guys are dealing with…..just on a whole different level.

  25. And for anyone thinking that any sort of legit head coach would come to Dallas….it wont be happening. No self-respecting HC with any past success, like Cowher or Gruden, would ever belittle himself to take that job.

The only guys who will ever be Cowboy coaches are organizational company men, or close-to-top-tier college guys looking to break into the league.

  26. Please… Jerry Jones record since 1997 is 132 and 132.

So that 26 and 24 record as Cowboys coach by Garret looks attractive to old Jerry’s eyes…

I mean even if the Cowboys finish 8 & 8 again this season, Garret would be 29 & 27.

Jerry is trying for baby steps you see.

20 yrs at .500 ball then he’s going to try and get a game or two above .500 during the next 20 yrs…

My gosh, even Jerry Jones himself has said he would have fired a G.M. with his track record…

THINK about that, it clearly tells all of us that what he has done is not good enough, not even for himself and YET he does not make a change.

That means he does NOT want the best for his team because he said he’d fire a G.M. with his record but he won’t make a change and hire one and let him run things.

Jerry would RATHER remain in charge with substandard results (his own words again, he’d fire a G.M. with his record) than make a change.

It’s better for him to be the G.M. with crappy results than to make a change.

Clearly it’s his team… he’s gone nowhere with it since 1997.

  27. I thought Landry and Brandt would be there forever but it turned out to only be half my life. Wow, I need to live well into my 90’s to see another change.

  28. “Garrett’s 26-24 as a head coach, and spent the offseason floundering about after his offensive play-calling authority was stripped away from him.”

Jesus Christ you guys just love to make stuff up, and roll with it.

The media made this HUGE deal about the playcalling. The Cowboys didn’t. the only big deal came about when Jerry let it slip when Jason didn’t know it was public knowledge yet. Jason hasn’t said anything negative about it, period.

  29. Wow Jerry is no longer satisfied to put an awful product on the field that sickens Cowboys fans now he wants to make sure you know there is no light at the end of the tunnel, no hope in site. I would welcome Al Davis at this point. Even in his current state he knows more about football than jerry!!

    Playoff Season % 62% 48%

Well, that a nice Switzer quote there, but the general consensus is that Stephen is much better at this than his father.

So, I hate to break it to you…but (as most things said about the Cowboys are) your assumptions are wrong, and you have no evidence to prove other wise.

Well, I don’t want to stop the world here…but I completely agree with a Giants fan. There’s some people who I think are pretty good on Dallas….Carr and Hatcher namely on defense. Although Hatch will probably not be here next season. There’s potentially good players, (Williams and Frederick) but that’s all relative and debatable anyway.

I agree, I’m a big Garrett fan. People forget he’s learning on the job. In terms of coaching, he’s a baby. He’s only been a coach, in ANY capacity since 2005 I believe, maybe even later. The offense was always ranked in the top 10, until this year when they gave the playcalling to Callahan so Garrett can concentrate on headcoaching duties, and really learning his position.

  34. YAAAAY!

    Best news all day!
Seriously Jerry, please don’t ever, ever die. I hope you discover the fountain of youth so you can be the cowboys GM for decades to come.

Maybe you could start investing in some transhumanism technologies so that you could prolong your life. I really love everything you’re doing and the city of Dallas supports you.

Whether or not you think he had anything to do with this or not he still was at the helm for 3 rings and one of the greatest eras of cowboy’s football ever. Now, I know that grace period is long gone but give the guy some credit for that.

  36. ratsfoiledagain:

Well I do like to role play, but unfortunately we really don’t even get the chance to do a mock phone conversation seeing as Jerry has apparently already made up his mind.

So the conversation is more like this:

Somebody close to Jerry: Hey do you want Gruden’s number?

Jerry: If I did I would have asked you for it.

  37. Unless God has other plans, Jerry Jones will be back as owner of the Cowboys—and there lies the real problem in Dallas.

  38. How much of those 3 rings were him and how much of them were Jimmy Johnson? I think Jimmy was a GREAT football man and made those early jerry jones teams. Jerry has had some nice picks over the years, but all in all he has failed for the majority of his time in charge.

  39. The NFC East, over the past three decades easily the best division in football in all apsects of the game and fandom is essentially the trophy for the annual winner of the Eagles-Giants rivalry for some time to come. Thank you Mr. Jones and Mr. Snyder.

  40. Again, NFC Championship Conf game appearances with JJ:

    92, 93, 94, and 95 (that’s none in 17, almost 18 years!)

Now look at the NFC Championship Conf game appearances before JJ (multiple appearances every decade – 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s.

  41. Back next year huh….that means no playoffs for da boys again next year
Not a Dallas fan at all… But they have the talent but don’t have the coach…..

  42. Perhaps those claiming Jerrah is becoming Al Davis in his later years are on to something… Dallas Cowboys–“Commitment to Mediocrity” and Just Win (Half The Time), Baby!”

  43. It says “coach”. I didn’t see where it said Head Coach which is what I always hear Jerry refer to him as.

Maybe he’ll be the special teams coach and Kiffin will become head coach then those two old farts can relive the 1950’s every day.

  44. You people should realizethat Darrin Gantt hates the Cowboys, doesn’t have an ounce of professionalism and bends the truth so far too bash Dallas it should be illegal. Florio, you should be embarrassed to have someone with so little jounalistic integrity on your site.

It could be argued that 1.5 of those titles should be sitting up in Minnesota right now.
