Saints defense holds strong to earn victory over Falcons

The New Orleans Saints defense came up with two critical stops of the rival Atlanta Falcons in the fourth quarter to hold on for a 17-13 win on Thursday night.

The victory by the Saints (9-2) sets up a critical matchup with the Seattle Seahawks (10-1) next Monday night for control of the NFC in the race for the No. 1 seed and homefield advantage throughout the playoffs.

The Falcons moved inside the Saints’ 30-yard line twice on their last two full possessions of the game but were turned away without points on both occasions.

Trailing 17-13, Matt Ryan led the Falcons to the Saints 22-yard line. Darius Johnson was stripped by Keyunta Dawson on a quick screen and New Orleans recovered to turn away the threat.

Atlanta held defensively and drove again into Saints territory. Cameron Jordan sacked Ryan, the Saints fifth sack of the night, to back the Falcons up. Facing a 4th and 15, the Falcons elected to settle for a 52-yard field goal attempt from Matt Bryant with three timeouts to attempt to get the ball back. The Saints called a timeout to ice Bryant and it actually worked. Bryant had made his first attempt after the timeout was called but pulled his second attempt wide left to keep the score at 17-13 with 2:19 left to play.

The Saints were able to run out the clock except for one desperation multi-lateral attempt at the end of the game that was unsuccessful.

Drew Brees surpassed Warren Moon to move into fifth place all-time in career passing yards. He finished the game 23 of 33 for 278 yards and two touchdowns.

Oh boy, time for ESPN to give no credit to the Saints for this win and claim that missed RTP flag in the first quarter “would’ve likely sealed the game for the Falcons.”

  2. seahawksteven777 says: Nov 21, 2013 11:33 PM

17 points against a lousy Falcons defense? Going to need to play much better than that in Seattle. Just being honest.

  3. thundastormz says: Nov 21, 2013 11:34 PM

Matt Ryan slides down on the 2 yard line on 3rd and goal with a defender back up in the endzone because he is afraid to get hit. Falcons settle for a field goal and miss out on 4 easy points. Falcons then lose by 4. Pathetic.

  4. tommymomoney says: Nov 21, 2013 11:34 PM

Saints better bring it harder than that if they want a win in Seattle.

  5. mrlaloosh says: Nov 21, 2013 11:34 PM

Atlanta played ALMOST good enough to win. almost. Too bad, too sad. WHO DAT!

  6. nfl4days says: Nov 21, 2013 11:35 PM

Great game, Falcons. I would like to apologize for thinking this would be an easy game. I should have known better. The falcons lost the game because of two plays: The dropped pick in the endzone where Moore hit Desmond Trufant, and the fumble in the redzone. I expect this team to be back in form next year. Geaux Saints!

I don’t understand the “who dey” chants from the Saints fans. Did they forget that the Jets and Patriots beat them?

  8. beastnyg says: Nov 21, 2013 11:35 PM

Get ready for Seattle to blow these chumps out.

Sean Payton is going to invite his kids (the Falcons) over for a weekend and take them out to the amusement park. It’s good that they know who their real daddy is since they’ve probably been searching for him for sometime.

That big mouth fraud of a wide receiver (White) won’t be yapping his mouth very much tonight.

    Dance, the Julio.

I’d almost rather have a Case of Keenum than Matty Ice.

  12. beastmode5150 says: Nov 21, 2013 11:57 PM

See ya Monday the second saints. :)

  13. thefiesty1 says: Nov 22, 2013 12:11 AM

NO, Smith opted for a field goal instead of going for it on 4th down. What the hell? They were 2-8, what’s the difference in being 2-9 or 3-8. Dumb ass!

  14. tradog36 says: Nov 22, 2013 12:22 AM

Damn!!! They need to fix those offensive and defensive lines really bad. Matt Ryan was getting killed out there. The defensive line brought no pressure on Drew Brees. Falcons must make major changes during the off-season.

  15. edwinmoses says: Nov 22, 2013 12:26 AM

not sure how anyone can respect the saints

  16. fan73 says: Nov 22, 2013 12:31 AM

It must get old for falcon fans to watch their birds get spanked by the saints year after year…..

  17. number1hawkfan says: Nov 22, 2013 12:41 AM

Can’t wait for next Monday, my Seahawks have beat the panthers, the niners and if we take out the saints I’ll feel real good about a playoff run. Brees is gonna move the ball on us we just gotta hold them to field goals. Gonna be a great game and an NFC Championship preview for sure.

  18. tdubdizzle says: Nov 22, 2013 1:11 AM

Saints need to step it up. Not looking like Super Bowl contenders right now.

  19. calvindaddy says: Nov 22, 2013 3:32 AM

Can’t wait for the Saints to smash on the Seahawks next! Let’s go Drew Brees

  20. progress2011 says: Nov 22, 2013 4:17 AM

Mattie Ice (tongue in cheek) has arguably the weakest arm in the league.

All those 5 yard/ underneath passes, requiring the receiver to get RAC (Run After Catch) yards simply will not work…..defenses have watched the film!

Since the proverbial screen pass has been taken away from Ryan, no he has ZERO play-making ability.

    1. Can’t make a play with that weak arm
    2. Can’t make a play with his feet

They may not win another game….PERIOD, with him as the starting qb.

  21. 6ball says: Nov 22, 2013 6:35 AM

    .

If Seattle can knock off the Saints next Monday, they would almost be a lock to secure home field advantage throughout the playoffs.

It’s most likely the last chance to derail the Seahawks before the postseason .

Incredible, awesome, stupendous win by saints starters over the Falcons second and third stringers!! fans should really gloat over it. (sarcasm if you couldn’t tell)

  23. steelersaregodsteam says: Nov 22, 2013 7:11 AM

So people actually watched this game?

  24. cursedvikings1998 says: Nov 22, 2013 7:22 AM

That was one of the worst officiating jobs I’ve seen.
    1. They missed the roughing the passer on Matt Ryan.
    2. They called delay of game on the Saints although the ball was clearly snapped before the clock hit zero.
    3. There was a bizarre holding call at the end. Ron Winter said there was no foul. Then he said there was a foul. And everyone was confused.

I like Ron Winter but he looked very silly and perplexed most of the game.

“Saints defense holds strong to earn victory over Falcons”

I guess that’s one way to look at it. You could also say “Falcons offense sucks”

  26. dcapettini says: Nov 22, 2013 8:27 AM

Perhaps it is time for the Falcons to consider that Matt Ryan is not what he seemed to be. He puts up lots of numbers and his fantasy owners love him, but he does not win. When the chips are down, he goes “Ice Cold”. A couple of more losses and Atlanta will have a shot at a very low pick in the draft. Everybody assumes that they will trade out, but it may be time for them to shuck their $20m QB and look to the future. Despite the numbers, Joe Flacco has done a lot more with a lot less than Ryan, and few would call him an “elite” QB.

  27. dodohead418 says: Nov 22, 2013 8:52 AM

It is isn’t too hard to contain the Falcons anymore because of no Julio Jones.

  28. dublindemonszfl says: Nov 22, 2013 8:57 AM

    Jerry Jones is PUZZLED

  29. what did you do to my tio says: Nov 22, 2013 9:16 AM

Completely different team on the road. May as well hand the Hawks a win next week and home field right now, and by that token, hand them the NFC title and a berth in the superbowl.

I hate the Hawks, but we already know San Fran isnt going into Seattle and winning in the playoffs, and the Saints flat out suck on the road compared to at home.

  30. conormacleod says: Nov 22, 2013 9:26 AM

Sure, 4th and 15 isn’t easy, but I hate it when coaches are too afraid to try and actually win the game. Giving the ball back with 2 minutes left? How’d that work out for ya?!

  31. nfl4days says: Nov 22, 2013 9:41 AM

Love how Seahawks fans seem to forget they needed 5 quarters to beat Tampa and Houston, a dropped TD against St. Louis, and won by 7 vs the titans at home.

  32. boisestatewhodat says: Nov 22, 2013 9:42 AM

First…it was close because it’s always close. Divisional rivalry…records and stats to out the window.

Second…it’s not ‘who dey’. That’s for the cute lil bengal fans.

Thanks for having us Atlanta…big brutha always likes coming to town.

    Getcha popcorn ready Seattle.

  33. seenoland54 says: Nov 22, 2013 10:03 AM

And yet again the Falcons prove that there is no way to win in the NFL without a line on either side of the ball. What do you think about that “get lots of weapons” strategy now Arthur? The most effective “weapon” an NFL team has is its line…period.

The winners stock the line first, the losers stock big name “weapons” and ignore the line.

  34. johnclaytonsponytail says: Nov 22, 2013 10:47 AM

Seahawks fans only remember the stats they want to. Saints have the best road record of any team since 06.
Seattle has the easiest schedule of any NFC team.
Seattle has struggled at home to sub par teams.
I could go on but you get the point.

  35. saints25 says: Nov 22, 2013 10:48 AM

@seahawksteven777 ,are you saying the team that let The Bucs jump out to a 21-0 lead in Seattle? Man Its going to be tough for the Saints, but dont act like your team has played great in every game they have played in..I bet Seahawks wont beat the Saints if the spot them 21 points,at home..

  36. wabbitslayer says: Nov 22, 2013 10:54 AM

    Keep it going, Falcons!!!
    Clowning for Clowney!!!

  37. ilovefoolsball says: Nov 22, 2013 11:00 AM

Coming off a short turnaround to play a fierce division rival this game was as expected. If Seattle is going to take the saints lightly due to the Atlanta game, good luck.
The saints might not be the same team away as they are at home but they’re still a top 5 and too 10 defense no matter where they play.

    Look it up.

  38. saints25 says: Nov 22, 2013 11:14 AM

Saints played their 3rd game in 12 days last night..That would be tough on any team

Weren’t the Falcons picked to win their division?

    ————————

Niner fan here. You could not be any more incorrect if you said 2 + 2 = 0.
Wilson has “it”. Makes plays at the right time. Any other QB behind that sieve which Seattle calls an O-line would have been injured by now.
If anything, blame Schneider and Carroll for the mess that is the protection they are giving their QB.

  43. cowboycjn says: Nov 22, 2013 1:06 PM

Yes have to agree, Saints have no consistency. One game they bring the aggressive, strong, everything clicking team – next game they all play like they all have a hangover. Gonna have to bring the right team against the hawks if they expect to win, and yes, road games are not played well by the Saints. But then again that’s why they play the game, to see who wins that particular game, on that particular day/night.

  44. thundastormz says: Nov 22, 2013 2:17 PM

Seahawks have a poor O-line?!? Are you special ed? Try telling Lynch that….

  45. hpeters77 says: Nov 22, 2013 3:01 PM

As many games the Saints played in a short time, it’s no wondered why they struggled but they will have rest when they face the Seahawks and it will be a great game. I’m a personal fan of Sherman and he will give Brees problems but I think it will be a good game.

Don’t look now, But they probably have a better defense. And Cam Newton is more experienced and playing better than Wilson. Kuechly plays like a seasoned-veteran in his second year at LB.
