Wade Phillips on Ed Reed: The truth is the truth

Jets safety Ed Reed said earlier this week that defensive coordinator Wade Phillips is “probably” the reason he was released by the Texans.

Reed also said he thought Phillips’ scheme was a bad fit for him and for some of his former teammates from Houston during his bridge burning session. Phillips was asked about Reed’s comments on Thursday and said he thought that his record spoke for itself in terms of how well his defenses have fit players.

“There’s disappointments in this league and in life. And I believe the way you deal with those things tells a lot about what you are and who you are,” Phillips said, via Brian T. Smith of the Houston Chronicle. “When we let Ed go, I went down to the training room, I looked him right in the eye, shook hands with him and I said, ‘Thank you. … It was an honor to coach a guy that’s going to be in the Hall of Fame and I wish you good luck.’ The truth is the truth.”

Phillips also said that he’d be cheering for Reed when he does go into the Hall of Fame even though he’s certain Reed won’t choose him to give the induction speech.

Things didn’t work out in Houston for Reed and the Texans and there are fingers to point on both side when it comes to the reasons why it didn’t work out. Hashing them out in public doesn’t do much good for either man since their brief working relationship will wind up being a blip in their histories.

  1. Wade Phillips is all class. Reed is a HOF’er for sure, but it seems to be everyone elses fault but his own these days. Hang up your cleats and go home already Ed.

  2. you wanna hear some funny stuff? google “fake wade phillips” and “fake jerry jones”….its pure comedy brilliance from a local Dallas sports station

  3. how can fingers be pointed at Houston for Ed Reed not working out??? he is too old and slow to play the game at an elite level anymore, and then he started pouting because he was benched. yes, Houston paid him too much, but not sure what else Houston did wrong.

  4. Wade was always a fantastic defensive coordinator and an even better human being. Terrible head coach (Johnson over Flutie in 1999 still ranks as maybe the worst coaching decision of all time), but hey, you can’t be good at everything.

The NFL’s a close-knit business. Ed Reed is only hurting himself.

  5. Listen, everyone and their mother in Bmore knew Ed was done 2 years ago. That Houston didn’t AND paid the guy 5 million should tell you everything you need to know about how soon that organization is going to win a SB.

  6. Wade is all class, and I like the ever-so-subtle “I went to the training room”—I see what you did there, Wade!

  7. This was a business decision Reed. Stop crying. Wade’s system is proven. Houstons defense wasn’t a good fit for you because you hardly made it on the field. You WERE a great player. Key Word: WERE. It time to hang it up.

  8. Ed Reed = the true MVP of last year’s Superbowl. Game saving tackle at the 2. Game saving pass defence (rushing in on Kap forcing an early throw). He was all over the field.

  9. Not the wisest move Ed. Either way, he scored the jackpot and got a huge payday at the sunset of his career. Hopefully he can go out in class rather than old and bitter.

  10. Ed Reed should take Wad’es comments as a lesson on how to live your life with some class.

Reed is where he belongs now with the most classless, pathetic, biggest joke of a franchise in all of professional sports.

  11. Fans complain about players & coaches feeding us spin & not telling the truth…but Ed keeps it real & people want to dog him out for not being “classy” like Wade Phillips. Ed didn’t say he was still great…he said he wasn’t a good fit & that lots of others in Houston aren’t either. We expect this from Ed in Bmore & love him for it. Dude knows the game, works & studies hard & gives his all. Sorry if his opinions are impolitic. Ed’s all you could ask for in a player, and a great character/personality & member of the community. Bmore can’t wait til you come back to coach Ed!

  12. really Ed? fact is your not half the player you use to be and you were fortunate to get paid by a team that didn’t realize that until it was to late. Wade is and has always been a class act, may not have been a great head coach but when it comes to running a Defense..he’s one of the best in the game.. past & present!

  13. Ed Reed is always will be a loser. His best friend is Ray Lewis – the biggest loser ever to play in the NFL. The Ravens are a joke, always will be a joke and are a classless team that employs all types of losers, criminals, druggies, etc… But the NFL loves them so we get to see them all the time. But I don’t have to watch ESPN any more since they hired Atlanta Ray Lewis.

  14. I feel bad for Ed Reed. He should have retired after last season, but because he had the biggest media vacuum in the league on his team (Ray-Ray)… In his mind he wanted to go one more year and Houston gave him stupid money.
Go ahead and retire Ed and don’t resort to classless comments to respected coaches. You will receive your proper accolades by Baltimore and HOF.

You realize that even at 2-8, Houston still has the top pass defense in the NFL?

I’m not sure if that proves or disproves who fit what, but it probably reinforces that Reed should keep his mouth shut.

  16. For some it’s hard to deal with not being able to do what you once was able to.
Reed needs to look in the mirror, it’s over, it happens to us all.

Too bad that there is not a “Hall of Suck.” Steelers and Ravens would fill it up.

As long as they make it big enough for those 8 lombardi’s that they have won.

  18. LOL, you guys are making more out of this then it is. Wade Phillips actually didn’t even need to explain himself he could of just said…”Yes, in response to Ed Reed, I was indeed responsible”..

Ed was just asked a question, and he gave his best guess why. After all he did call out the coaching staff.

  19. RG3 stands for Real Garbage 3passingyardsinahalf HAHAHAHAHA, watch the redskins fans cry now and say HEY moron, he threw for 4 yards in a half, not 3! HAHAHAHAHA

  20. Wade is the epitome of class for his response. Reed on the other hand has no reason to be such a baby, he had a HOF career and he earned his ring. Thats more than 95% of the players can hope for. Get over it reed and show some class. If you keep your mouth shut and show some respect, you might be lucky enough to replace one of these other buffoons on the sports shows.

  21. Meh, we’ve seen this a thousand times. A guys career is over and everyone can see it but him.

Ed would be best served, by not eating those sour grapes in public.

    #1 overall defense too….

Obviously Wade is doing something right….

  23. A shame when great players, who remain relatively quiet their entire career… until near the end of it.

I think though one has to consider that in these times, with all the social media, people sending friends pics of their evening meal etc., there’s more pressure now if you are in the public eye. If you are in the public eye and the subject of “washed-up” stories surrounding your being cut, I think we all understand how it would be hard to not feel that you had to say something. Sometimes we just choose to say the wrong things.

Ed will be okay, he’s HOF and he should be set financially, and I think he will probably learn from this.

Everyone saw what Wade did, after Ed’s comments, specifically about being out-coached.

Let me guess- a 49ers fan. The team that lost to the Ravens in the Superbowl.

And as poorly as Flacco is playing this year? At least he’s not as bad as half-season wonder Colin Krapernick. That guy is a first ballot Hall of Sucker.

  27. Wade and Reed both have given much to the game and fans. Good luck to both. Getting old is not easy, especially for the talented.

  28. I was hoping Reed would opt for the Patriots now I’m glad he didn’t, he belongs on the Jets. Good riddance.

    So is Matt McGloin!

  30. Wade seems like a good guy but he somewhat stinks as any type of coach. Just look at how that defense got destroyed two times by the Pats last season and how many leads they have given up this season when the D went into meltdown mode like they did against the Colts a couple weeks ago.

I think Reed needs to just let it go. He went to a team where he didn’t fit and now he’s gone. It happens. No point in going on about how the scheme didn’t fit your style.

  31. Ed Reed is not a very good player any longer. He will be in the HOF one day. He showed his classlessness by calling out Wade Phillips. Phillips is a class act and treated Ed respectfully. Phillips showed class, Ed showed his ass .
