Mike Mitchell to Drew Brees: “Stop being soft”

AP

Panthers safety Mike Mitchell has said he thinks the NFL is targeting him for fines.  Based on his latest comments, he could be getting targeted even more.

Appearing on the FnA podcast from FOX Sports L.A., Mitchell accused Saints quarterback Drew Brees of flopping after being hit by 49ers linebacker Ahmad Brooks on Sunday.

“The thing that I hated about the play, the whole thing, and this is what these offensive guys are doing, they’re kind of running with it,” Mitchell said.  “Drew Brees is throwing a fit in the post-game interview saying how he got hit in the chin and he was dazed, and all this other stuff.  And it’s like, dude, the replay clearly shows he did not even touch you in the chin.

Stop being soft, get up off the ground,” Mitchell said.  “You fumbled the football, that’s why the only reason you were acting like you were hurt, is so you could draw a flag.”

Mitchell predicts that receivers and quarterbacks will “roll around on the ground” in an effort to get a flag, and he’d like to see the NFL implement a flopping rule.

“You saw the play with Drew Brees,” Mitchell said.  “He did not get hit in the chin.  He got hit hard, which he should have got hit hard because we are playing full speed tackle football.  And he fumbled the football.  And I think that’s really was the reason he was down so long.  He was really trying to sell that and trying to get a flag.  And obviously it worked, and their team was able to steal a win because of that play.”

Mitchell expresses concern that the nature of the sport is “combative,” and that “football needs to remain football.”

“There’s a reason everyone can’t do this,” Mitchell said.  “And there’s a certain physical aspect of the game that correlates mentally.  You know, people being able to take that type of punishment.”

He’s right, but there’s a balance between showing how much punishment a guy can take at the age of 25 and being able to function at the age of 52.

For now, Mitchell will avoid the financial punishment by administering punishment lower, in order to avoid financial punishment.

“You just have to lower the target level,” Mitchell said regarding hits on receivers.  “I know wide-receivers are getting pissed about guys hitting them in the knees, but I’m not trying to get give another $20,000 to the NFL, so you will get hit in the in the stomach or the knee area by me.  I’m not doing it in a dirty way at all to hurt anyone, but at the same time I’m not getting these $50 million contracts.”

He’ll be facing a guy with a $120 million contract soon.  Twice.  His name is Drew Brees.  And Mitchell’s comments make an already interesting pair of games between the Panthers and Saints even more compelling.

  1. That was clearly an ILLEGAL hit by Brooks, and I swear Brees was the one that gave Brooks respects for the hit and said it was clean? Mike Mitchell sounds like the cry baby..

  2. Drew Brees to Mike Mitchell:

“Win a Superbowl, then offer advice.”
    “See my contract?”
“Yes, there is one more digit than you get.”
    “Suck it.”
    “Who are you?”
“Champion = Me. Not a champion = You.”
“They don’t fine me for being awesome.”

  3. Mike who? And I know a panthers player isn’t talking about benefitting from calls. Funny how teams FINALLY have a little success and some no name wants to get a big chest all of a sudden. That panthers front 7 is dominant no doubt, but the secondary is suspect at best. Teams always talk crap about NO before they play, and then when they lost they pile on the excuses.

  4. “..but there’s a balance between showing how much punishment a guy can take at the age of 25 and being able to function at the age of 52.”

I truly hate this comment. Everyone who plays NFL football knows what they are getting into. No one is holding a gun to anyone’s head forcing them to play.

  5. Who is he? Well, you’ll find that out when the rest of our defense introduces themselves to the Saints and Drew Brees. The Saints BARELY beat Atlanta who have an abysmal defense, don’t act like you’re unbeatable.

  6. Everybody’s mad because they predicted Mitchell to be out of the NFL by now and he’s starting for a Playoff caliber team. So much for the so-called “experts”

  7. Who is Mike Mitchell? Never heard of the guy. I’ve heard of Drew Brees though. Is it “flopping” when your head almost falls off your shoulders because your neck gets stretched by 6 inches ? I guess that would be flopping then.

  8. I’m actually a Drew Brees fan, but anyone who says the Brooks hit was “clearly illegal,” either doesn’t know what they’re talking about, or is a 9er hater.

There’s at least a grain of truth in what Mitchell is saying.

  9. Lol. Who is this guy? The Panther win a few games this season and now let’s start talking $hit!!! Let’s see what you have to say in your post game press conference when Brees throws a couple touchdowns over your head.

  10. Not the smartest thing he’s ever done, but Mike is correct. Brees is the epitome of a hypocrite. Brees will be a politician one day and he’s already practicing.

  11. a guy with cam newton as your qb calling drew brees soft? you can usually find cammy boy sulking on the bench with a towel over his head, after throwing a pick or doing a bonehead play, instead of studying game film. i know cam has had a decent run of late, but as soon as he hits the bricks again, which will happen, and probably against new orleans. little cammypoo will be crying on the bench

  12. Sounds like Mikes jealous the Saints are another game ahead. Drew Brees looked like he was in some pain, he could’ve gotten whip lash.

  13. Brees didn’t flop. He was hit hard. I still think it was a legal and proper play. If it isn’t, it should be.

  14. Man, the thing that drives me nuts about this whole situation is it doesn’t matter if you think the hit was clean or dirty, the fact is that the flag came out before Brees hit the ground. It’s not like he was crying for a flag after the play or was “rolling around” acting hurt, he just got up shook himself off and moved to the next play. He didn’t throw the flag himself. Jeez, hate the rule if you want, but I don’t understand the hating on Brees.

  15. Mike Mitchell will never be half as good or successful in the NFL as Drew Brees. I sense some jealousy. The hit on Brees is what made Football what it is today. That hit was legal ten years ago, the lawyers have really done a number on this game.

  16. Yes Mike Minter (or whatever it is) a guy who had a career-threatening shoulder injury and has never missed a start in NOLA due to injury is soft.

P.S. Your mascot’s name is Sir Purr #soft

  17. Drew Brees is always whining…he’s soft as butter….he was crying about Dashon Goldson not getting suspended the first time because he hits to hard too. That’s why I call him Screw Brees . Niners for Life.

  18. Reading these comments, some of you are out of your skulls with the Drew Brees hate. This guy has never missed an NFL game due to injury in 13 years. Top 5 in every career passing category, (or imminently close to it), and some act like this guy is a fraud. Look at the stats, look at the career, and then hope he doesn’t drop 50 on you out of spite. Why give the Saints any bulletin board material? What a bonehead.

  19. “There’s a reason everyone can’t do this,” Mitchell said. “And there’s a certain physical aspect of the game that correlates mentally. You know, people being able to take that type of punishment.”

    That’s…surprisingly insightful.

  20. This game is 2 weeks away, and the Panthers are already thinking about the Saints…which means Miami will beat them.

    Book it.

  21. This is great. My respect for Bree’s has really dropped recently. First his obnoxious quotes and arrogance during the lock out, and now his initial reaction after the hit (“clearly that’s a penalty”). I know the media loves portraying him as some golden boy, but he’s kind of a tool

  22. Until this article I didn’t even know who the hell Mike Mitchell was. So just for kicks I looked him up. In Mitchell’s four and a half year career he has 137 tackles. In that same span Drew Brees has thrown 184 touchdown passes. So, again, who the hell is Mike Mitchell and why did he open his pie hole?

  24. “He’s right, but there’s a balance between showing how much punishment a guy can take at the age of 25 and being able to function at the age of 52.”

So sick of this….. they know what they’re signing up for. Seriously, maybe not as far as the whole knowing about CTE and all, but im pretty sure not one player expects to end their professional career in better health then when they started….

I Just don’t understand it anymore, it’s always something… I don’t know about a flop but the hell with it, in general let them play, stop making the game so ticky tac like NBA

  25. The people saying “Who’s Mike Mitchell”, might as well be saying “What is the NFL?”. Fake fans, fantasy lovers only. Watch some real football haters. Saints got given a free win by the rigged refs, Brees is a little sissy. That’s all.

  26. As a die hard, I am not thrilled about Mitchell’s comments. however, the panthers have been full of nice guys the past five years and they have stunk. this team has an attitude and they are good. there has to be a correlation there.

Also, the panthers may not be the best team in football, but they do have the #1 scoring defense in the league and yet their recent starting defense includes a cast off from oakland (mitchell), a cast off from philly (mikell) and FIVE, yes FIVE rookies (Lotulelei, Klein, White, Short and Lester)

  27. thegrigga49 says: Nov 22, 2013 5:28 PM

Where was Brees when Matt Ryan got decapitated last night from a REAL hit? He didn’t say nada when his team benefitted.

Where was Matt Ryan last night? He didn’t throw any touchdown passes.

    ====

Mike Mitchell apparently played for the Raiders for 4 years. Land of irrelevancy. He is so great the Panthers signed him to a one-year deal.

If you are a Panthers fan it is funny saying the Saints won by rigged refs considering how your last game ended.

  29. All the people calling Brees soft must not know he worked through a career threatening injury and hasn’t missed a game in years. You keyboard warriors would still be on the ground if you took that brooks hit.

  30. Saints fans don’t want to admit that they received a win, they didn’t earn a win. I’d say 49ers would be -600 american odds if the refs didn’t call touching the chest penalty on Ahmad Brooks.

  31. Mike Mitchell was a bum when he played for my Raiders and he’s a bum now for the Panthers. If I remember correctly he was in the news a week or so ago for whining about something else. A little advice Mike, why dont you stop focusing on running your mouth and start focusing on being a better safety than you have been since you were drafted! Thank God Reggie MacKenzie kicked you to the curb. This guy was a total waste of a draft pick and obviously a head case.

  32. He’s right, but there’s a balance between showing how much punishment a guy can take at the age of 25 and being able to function at the age of 52.

    ———————————

Brees’ head will be fine, considering he clearly wasn’t hit in the head. Soft little chump probably bit his lip.

  33. He’s right, Drew Bree’s is a cry baby.

He looked like someone begging for change when Ahmad Brooks hit him. It’s just pathetic. Still can’t believe that call.

When a call is still being discussed a week later, that’s bad. It takes away from, you know, the GAME.

The call against the 49ers was SO much worse than the PI pick up against the Pats. The 49er call lost them the game. All they had to do was kneel on the ball and kill the clock. The Pats still had to put the ball in the end zone. Nonetheless, just two pathetic calls by the NFL.

After this weekend I’m all for getting rid of officials and letting some new sort of technology officiate the game fairly, and not tailor it for cry baby superstars like Drew Bree’s. We want technology refs!

  34. I don’t like Drew at all..he does milk things a lot and I wouldn’t expect anyone outside of an NFC south fan to realize that..but trust me he does. I love that our players at coming out and talking and being passionate. It’s been a long time since our team was relevant..,anyone hating on us can shove it. #KeepPounding

  35. Someone should tell Mike Tyson to stay in his sport because Mike Tice has no room to speak. Drew Brees takes more hits than Mike Myers gets in a season and furthermore who is Mike Jones? who… Mike Jones?

Besides Brees didn’t get up with his hands in the air looking for a call (Payton Manning, Tom Brady) he was pissed because he fumbled the ball but he didn’t know the flag was thrown or about to be because he was face down pounding his fist after he took the shot.

So what Mike Patterson is talking about I have no clue but he needs to shut his trap.

    WHO DAT!!!

Well…49ers certainly earned the loss. Something like 20 yards of total offense in the 4th quarter…running into the punt returner…

Face it, due to unforced errors by the Saints, and a freak fumble through the endzone on a pick…this game was much closer than it should’ve been.

  37. Also i wish someone would bring up the fact that the 49ers didn’t lose because of the Drew Brees call…

They lost because Colin. been playing well Kaeperwhatever

STEPPED OUT OF BOUNDS AND STOPPED THE CLOCK LIKE AN IDIOT. I thought his biceps were smarter than that (snickers)

No one wanted to say anyting on the Bogus non call for the patriots when they were HANDED that win on the LAST play.

    Now the saints benefited.

    Double standards galore.

  38. Remember that no name safety on the Steelers a few years ago that talked crap about Brady? What was his name? Anthony Smith or something like that? Remember how Brady just embarrassed him in that game and no one ever heard from him, or even of him ever again? I think the same thing is about to happen to one Mike Mitchell. Drew Brees is going to pick Mitchell apart so badly that no one will ever hear from him or of him ever again.

  39. dodgerlakerfan1969 says: Nov 22, 2013 5:45 PM

Yes Mitchell or whatever your name is, Saints got aided by a BS call but then again so did your Panthers on Monday night. Looks like you both got help from the league.

Poor Patriots and 49ers fans, we all know the league just hates those small market teams and does everything it can to sabotage them!!!!

I don’t disagree with that. What I said is the FUMBLE at the 35yd line with around 5min left, that was GIVEN TO THE SAINTS IS THE REASON WHY THEY WON. Dude fumbled, it’s obvious. Yes Saints D played great all game that day. It was the FUMBLER Drew Brees that flopped on the ground like a fish out of water after he got rocked by Brooks. Fumble recovered by 49ers, up by 3, 5min left. They would be favored as hell. So yes, Saints DID NOT EARN THAT WIN.

  44. I find it pretty amazing the amount of people who don’t know who he is. He’s a starting safety, I don’t understand. I guess because he called out Drew Brees. I don’t know

  46. I’m just going to go on record now as saying that this was not a smart move.
It accomplishes nothing positive for the Panthers.

  47. Not going to rehash the hit but what makes you say this:
Panthers safety Mike Mitchell has said he thinks the NFL is targeting him for fines. Based on his latest comments, he could be getting targeted even more.

i don’t read anything there that implies he’s going to do anything to Brees or any other QB that’s illegal or even threatening?

I think he means Brees will be targeting him in the game to throw touchdowns over his head.

  50. Hate like this is reserved for the truly great. Brady, Manning, Brees. You guys want them leading your team, but you don’t. You get scrubs. This makes me laugh.

  51. Prefacing your comment with, “Who is this guy” does nothing to bolster your opinion. Most of you consider yourselves avid NFL fans. That being said, you should know who starters are for every team. Whether or not Mitchell is a household name does nothing to change the fact that Brees was not hit in the head and faked an injury to get the flag. Stop being ignorant.

  52. Maybe Drew should wear a dress as Jack Lambert suggested for QB’s back in the day. Aldon’s tackle was below shoulder level and his arm went to the neck after the initial contact. It looked to me as if he was holding a little bitty baby to protect him. He did look like a crash-test dummy though from the initial contact. Perhaps the NFL should adopt weight and height limits just like the Pee-Wees.

As for Mike Mitchell, thank you Raider-Nation for the Panther Boost.

Try this comment again…this time in English.

  54. This is ridiculous. As has been stated, the hit was fine, the neck throw down was not. And when Brees got up, blood running from his mouth to his chin (how did that happen, if he only got hit in the chest?), he didn’t complain to the officials — the flag was thrown when he hit the ground. He just moved on to the next play — like he always does. Brees is one of the toughest quarterbacks in the game, and very rarely do you ever see him complain to the officials or beg for a flag.

And though it obviously would have benefitted the 49ers to have gotten the ball, don’t tell me that the play decided the game. There was still way too much time for the 49er’s to just take a knee and run the clock out — there was still enough time after it occurred for the Saints to score not once but twice. Not to mention that the 49er’s got the ball with the game tied and did nothing with it. Again, the 49er’s had the ball with the game tied, more than two minutes on the clock, and did nothing. The Saints got it back and went down and scored. That’s why they won and that’s why the 49er’s lost.

    =====================================

Did you even watch the game??? Saints still had to get into field goal range to TIE after that call. The 9er’s got the ball back and had a chance to drive into field goal range for the win. They went three and out and punted. The Saints drove the field for the winning fg. So three drives after the call and you say all they had to do was kneel and run out the clock??? LOL

  62. Us Saints fans (true fans, not trolls on this board) do not think this team is “all world”. They’re pretty good, but they have glaring weaknesses. One of them is not Brees, and a leader of 52 other men has to be confident and somewhat arrogant to lead if those 52 men are gonna believe in him. Would you trust and follow someone who is not confident where the crap they’re leading you?

And chastising some of our more overly exuberant fans who claim this is a Super Bowl-caliber team? 9-2 ain’t all that bad after Week 12, and you can certainly consider ANY team with that record at this point Super Bowl-caliber. We fans who know this team’s history knows that a 9-2 record is NOT an automatic ticket to the playoffs, much less a Super Bowl. But that’s why the games are played.

  63. He’s the starting free safety for the #1 defense in the league.

He can say what he wants.

BTW, Mike Mitchell is playing at pro-bowl level. All you little boys need to grow a pair. This is tackle football.

    keep pounding.

  64. 49er fans still crying. I guess they learned from there coach. Brees got hit in the neck which is clearly a flag. As far as the Panthers what a joke. Can’t wait !!!!!! Panthers won’t even make the playoffs.

  65. “The call against the 49ers was SO much worse than the PI pick up against the Pats. The 49er call lost them the game. All they had to do was kneel on the ball and kill the clock. The Pats still had to put the ball in the end zone. Nonetheless, just two pathetic calls by the NFL.”
    =======

This revisionist’s history is quite impressive. The 49ers couldn’t have run the clock down; the Saints had their timeouts. In fact there was so much time left that both the 49ers and the Saints got an additional drive after that penalty.

  66. The league office came out and said the hit was illegal. That’s why he was fined $16,000 for the hit. If you look at the different camera angles, there’s one that clear shows Brees was close-lined at the end of the tackle.

Maybe I’ll make it clear to all you armchair refs:

THE LEAGUE RE-AFFIRMED THAT IT WAS AN ILLEGAL HIT!!!!!

In other news, even if you didn’t like the call, the Saints got screwed multiple times in the Patriots/Saints game, the Pats got screwed in the Patriots/Jets game, and the refs missed a facemask on Ryan in the Saints game, but they also missed a facemask on Pierre Thomas (Saints running back). Both teams got screwed.

Getting screwed by the refs is “part of the game” this season. Saints have had to deal with it. Pats have had to deal with it. Falcon’s and 49er’s have had to deal with it. It’s not right, but at least they seem to be screwing everyone equally.

Yeah cuz Brees took the snap, delivered the ball, took the hit, did the Michael Jackson thing with his neck, bit his lip, begged the ref for a call and then thew the flag while lying face down.

Those Jedi Mind tricks are really taking the league by storm.

  69. Yeah cuz Brees took the snap, delivered the ball, took the hit, did the Michael Jackson thing with his neck, bit his lip, begged the ref for a call and then thew the flag while lying face down.

How is Brees asking for flags while biting his lip and lying face down? I’m pretty sure you also said Brees threw the flag as well, Lol.

Brees just plays hard, like a pro. The nfl outlawed dirty hits that knock people out of the game. If you want trashy move like this, there is pro wrestling and that ultimate fighter stuff. This has no place in modern football.

  70. What’s with the ” keep pounding”!. I realize you Charlotte fans are a little light in the loafers. Just stop the pounding before you hurt yourself.

So my thing is, how the hell this dude calling Brees soft after the dude took a hit, while stationary, from a LB damn near 50 lbs bigger than him. A hard hit, not a love tap. Shook it off then remained in the game to lead his team into scoring position. Then he says Drew threw a fit in the interview…..the man did nothing close to that. Then he says, “Stop being soft, get up off the ground,”….mofo, HE DID. WTF are you b!+(^ing about?

  74. And for all you 49ers fans crying about how that call cost you the game. Really? Freaking really? I guess Frank Gore dropping a wide open pass had no bearing what so every on the game. I guess your team being held to under 200 yards of total offense had nothing to do with it either. I could go on.

  75. 49erlifer says: Nov 22, 2013 8:51 PM

Please Panthers D snap his leg in two so he can cry about being hit too low, I’m so sick of brees he’s another tom brady a big crybaby!

Brees > Kaepernick by a MILE.

    You already know this though.

  76. I loved Mike Mitchell on the Raiders. Great pick by Al Davis. Sorry to see him out of Oakland.

He’s one of the most passionate, hardest-hitting players in the league right now.

On a side note, his college highlights cut up on YouTube is hands down the sickest I’ve ever seen. Check it out sometime.

  77. Really a panthers overrated unknown player is talking crap about a hit that he says changed the outcome of the game. Well I guess the team I play for would be doing great defensively if we were to hold/pass interference/hug/mug and tackle a WR before he gets a chance to catch a ball too. Tell you what mike keep flapping your gums because I’m sure Bree’s will shut it for everyone

  78. Wow! Who knew Mike Mitchell was a Whiner fan? Sounds just like one? An idiot just like them to, because he obviously didn’t see the ref reaching for the flag as Brees was hitting the ground, before he could supposedly “flop.” He probably saw the doctored pics whiner fans been posting of Brooks arm going around the top of Brees’ chest, not the part where his arm slams into Brees’ neck and ride up into Brees’s chin and he shoves Brees into the ground head first while holding onto his facemask. If any of you idiots think this didn’t happen then you haven’t watched it and need to go take a look. As for that fumble costing the 49ers the game, whiners want to conveniently overlook the fact their offense had the grand total of -7 yards in the 4th quarter.

  79. As for being soft, all Brees did was get up after the hit, spit out a mouthful of blood, lead the team to a tying field goal, then a game winning field gooal against a supposedly worldbeater defense. We’ll take it.

I love when guys on the internet act like their opinion matters, but says “who is this guy” like an actual NFL player’s opinion means less than their’s.

    ====

You do realize that someone can play in the NFL and still be an idiot?

  81. Panthers won the SB in which year???….right…..ssshhhh…..you’re embarrassing yourself…..win the big game first, junior, before you talk smack….

    Brees> Scam….

Brees will make this no name pay…..

    Panthers are such a joke….completely irrelevant…

    Stay classy, hillbillies…

  82. I’m sure Ron Rivera will be pleased with his player providing the Saints with a bit extra motivation. Considering the new found confidence the Panthers have perhaps Mitchell feels as though facing one of the all time best quarterbacks twice in the next few weeks is of no consequence to him. The hit itself can be debated and certainly everyone has an opinion about it (including myself), but with respect to the argument Mitchell makes he is a bit off mark. Drew Brees was asked specifically during the post game press conference if he thought the hit was worthy of a flag. Brees answered the reporters’ question honestly. If you disagree with his opinion that is your right but looking at the hit there is little to indicate Brees flopped. Brooks put a huge hit on him and as such I believe any quarterback would have hit the ground and taken a minute or two to gather his thoughts.

  83. “..but there’s a balance between showing how much punishment a guy can take at the age of 25 and being able to function at the age of 52.”

Careful Mike, I don’t to hear about your Carpal Tunnel years from now and how the “blog” business needs reform.

  84. Wow. I really don’t understand how you can actually WATCH Brees’ postgame interview, or his interview at practice and say he was “throwing a fit”. Or whining. Or crying about getting hit too hard.

And flopping around begging for a flag?? Faking an injury? Really – did you WATCH the play? Can you take your hater shades off and watch it again, please? There was no begging for a flag or faking injury. He got up. Collected himself. And moved the chains.

I get it if all you barbarians are mad at the rule changes that are now making players cut down on the sheer carnage they are allowed to create under this silly guise of “player safety” – but THE RULES HAVE CHANGED.

And the MAKERS OF RULES have declared the hit illegal, the penalty flag warranted and accessed a fine. Deal with it.

The players who take the field in 2013 have to adapt to THE RULES of 2013. Not 1970, 1980 or even 2000. Adapt or suffer the consequences like a penalty flag. Giving up a fumble recovery. A hefty fine. A game or two suspension.

Just like in society, there are rules.

  85. Totally agree. I say allow expanded endzone celebrations, and take out whining about every non call. Seems like a fair deal to me.

  86. #1- this big mouth unknown should mind his own business and keep his mouth shut. Regardless if the hit was high, low, or in between – the ref threw the flag not Brees idiots. And no he didn’t fake or play to be hurt, so many smart A$$ in this world that think they are God- news for you idiots – keep your trap shut too.
Its a game; and if the entertainment didn’t go your way- who cares?
As for this Mitchell – never heard of him – must be a ploy to make himself known by being a loud mouth.

  87. HOF QB who barely weighs 200 lbs and has barely missed a game since coming back from a torn labrum in 06. Definitely soft

  88. The miracle of it all is that World Class Rugby players manage to tackle people aggressively and effectively without hitting people in the head or taking out their knees…I guess the key word is “tackle” and not “hit”…….

He’s the starting free safety for the #1 defense in the league.

He can say what he wants.

BTW, Mike Mitchell is playing at pro-bowl level. All you little boys need to grow a pair. This is tackle football.
    ———————————————
If by “Pro-Bowl Level” you mean tied for 84th out of just DB’s in tackles then you are correct. …tied for 90th if you include assisted tackles. I am sure Drew is losing sleep over this guy.

  90. Did none of you watch the game? I hate the saints but he clearly hit him in the face with his arm and then his hand on the way done. News flash ppl you dont bleed from ur face unless ur hit in it. Some ppl are just blind like this nobody talking trash

  91. Great Job Mike us Panther Fans are might proud of you & Hey Brees Man up Cry baby & If Cam Newton takes a hit he gets up & say let do it again

MItchell & the rest of the Panthers might not be well know but they keep kicking butt & besides the Saints win one SB a few yrs ago & there Fans think they are gods Hey Brees Listen to Smitty ICE UP MAN ICE UP

  92. also Mitchell wasn’t a top FA signing but thankful our GM & Coachs sign Mitchell not Ed Reed or Kenny Phillips many Panther fans wanted Dashon Goldson glad we didn’t sign him lol hows that working for you folks
sometimes bug names only mean big contracts nothing else

  93. mitchell shut up Punk.!!!! your team has won a few games big deal dude. Carolina is still and always will be REDSKINS COUNTRY PUNK.!!!!!! What has your franchise ever done???? Empty Trophy Case Team.!!!! HTTR FOR LIFE.

  94. Well. The saints are an elite franchise. The Panthers are not. Anyone who says these stupid things about Drew Brees whining about a call either didn’t see the game or are just dumb and jealous. The call was made, he agreed with it.

He is one of the greatest QB’s of all time and this is undisputed by his statistics and he is only 34 years old. He is a without question, a first ballot hall of famer, a superbowl mvp, and a member of one of the most prolific offenses in NFL history. He is a champion and one of the best to ever play the game. Regardless of what he does next (which will probably just add to his historic nfl legacy) he is without any question one of the best to ever play the position of NFL QB. This is a fact. That is all.

  95. All you pathetic Saints fanboys are hilarious. Who cares what Mike Mitchel has done, he is dead nut on. Win/loss record doesn’t matter, number of super bowls doesn’t matter, facts are facts. Drew Breeze is a whiney little bitch, and stole a win by flopping. The exact same hit got laid on Matt Ryan on Thursday night and there was NO FLAG. Wanna know why? Cause he didn’t flop on the ground like a little bitch.

  96. The list of yellow lace panty wearers:

    Peyton manning
    Tom Brady
say it ain’t so……….D. Bree’s ( I had so much more respect for him before)
    More to come…….
    ?
    ?
    ?
    ?

  97. I guess is no surprise that Mr. Mitchell is making comments without actually having seen the play, not unlike the great majority of the people here, and going by the collective outcry of the media that the 49ers lost the game, and blaming that one call as the play that cost the 49ers the game. And now, Brees is “soft” and a “crybaby”. But, hey, it’s 2013. You can look up video clips on the internet. Go look at the play.

    The facts are:

That play was not the last play of the game. Even after that call, and the ensuing Saints FG, the game was tied and the 49ers had possession of the ball with 2:06 at their 20. They proceeded to go 3-and-out (sack, incomplete pass, Kaepernick ran out of bounce), leaving 1:41 on the clock. The Saints took the ball at their 25 and marched down the field, kicking the winning FG.

Had the sack not been flagged, no one really knows where the 49ers would have gotten the ball. The whistle blew quick and everyone stopped. You can speculate either way: 49ers get a score (TD, FG) still plenty of time left for a 2 possession difference; had the 49ers gotten the ball inside their territory or at the spot of recovery, at that point the 49ers had only gotten a net of 23 yards of offense in the 4th quarter.

As for Brees being “soft”: Brees took a shot, blood out of his mouth and all (check out the neck stretch in the video); after the hit, he was a bit dazed, but he did not complain to the refs, he got up, and kept on playing. The whole thing about Brees being “soft” or a “crybaby” came from Mike Golic, who played a crying baby sound after airing Brees’ comments on the play. Again, it is the internet: go find the clip to hear what Brees said. In all of he said about that one play, one sentence was , “I thought it was a penalty”. And ESPN, as it is usual for their brand of gossiping and sensationalism, just ran with it.

Now, all this outrage over this one play, where were all of you after the Saints Patriots game?

  98. I used to despise Falcon fans but the ignorance and arrogance of Saints fans is mind blowing. They are nothing more than the Patriots of the NFC. Great team full of cheaters and whiners. I can’t wait for the bags to come back so we don’t have to look at your faces anymore! Kudos to you, Mike Mitchell!!

  99. Larry David, nobody in NC under the age of 74 pulls for the Redskins. Hell, I’d be surprised if those old farts will even be around the next time the Skin’s have a 1st round Draft pick.

    Good try though.

  100. All you Saints fans on here sound like crybaby Drew Brees.

And for the person that told me “the saints still had to get into FG position after the hit”. Nope, you’re wrong. Just a Saints fan trying to make that clean hit look worse than it really was. This hit changed the whole last 3 minutes of the game. The Saints knew they could get into FG range, run the ball and have the 49ers use their TOs, and have a shot to win.

HAD THE RIGHT CALL BEEN MADE: The 49ers would have ran the ball down the Saints throats, milked the SAINTS TO’s, and won by 3.

Go watch the video of Ahmad Brooks clean sack again. Happened on Saints 45, would have given them the ball at the 30 with 3 min to play. Instead of the 49ers the ball at midfield, up by 3….. NOW DO Y’ALL SEE WHY THE SAINTS WON???

This call is so bad that even my buddy from Spokane, WA. Who is a huge Seahawks fan says it was Pathetic.

I’m sorry, but if the officials are not gonna call PI’s at the end of the game, then damn sure don’t call these BS calls. When people are talking about calls a week later, its taking away from the GAME.

Penalties should NEVER be the talk of a outcome. And yet, here we are….

  101. Drew Brees will be remembered longer and by more people (and the record books) than this guy.

Who the hell is Mike Mitchell and why does he speak as if he is important enough to be heard?

  102. I find it humorous that a Taints fan talks of the Panthers winning some games and then pushing their chests out. You are either a bandwagon Taints fan or have conveniently forgotten that ya’ll wore paper bags over your heads for 40 years. Just sayin…

    ————————————————–
Interesting that you say that, since the 49ers ran for a total of 81 yards the entire game, with 23 net yards in the 4th quarter, and 16 of those 23 coming in one play. The The 49ers weren’t moving the ball the entire game. Check out the box score: SF passing 115 yards, rushing 81 yards.
Oh, and speaking of HAD THE RIGHT CALL BEEN MADE: The 49ers would not have played in the SB.
You are the one who should stop crying, Then again, the 49ers are a reflection of their coach (talk about a real cry baby); looks like their fans are too.

Breed is softer than tissue paper. I hate watching him stand on his tippy toes and tilt his head back to see his receivers.
Tippy toes or not, no other QB throws as accurately

  105. If Brees is so soft, how come he has thrown 1,294 more yards and 11 more touchdowns than Cam Newton so far this year? If Brees is so soft, how many games has he missed this year? None, yet big tough guy Mikey missed week one with a …….wait for it…….. a calf injury….. And this guy has the nerve to open his mouth.. What a jackhole…

  106. How can the smallest QB in the league possibly be considered soft that’s a contradiction in itself…If anything he’s the toughest QB in the league his career was suppose to be over after the shoulder injury in San Diego but since joining the Saints he’s been arguably the best QB in the league and when has brees ever in his history complained about a call or a hit please find that tape for me only people soft are the ones still upset about this call 2 weeks later lmao

  107. I love that this is still a topic over a week later. Just shut your mouth and play. Did the Saints benefit from the call? Yes. Should there have been a flag? Apparently the ref thought so. What does this have to do with Brees? He got hit and a flag was thrown. I didn’t see Cam Newton going to the refs and asking them to pick up the flag on the bogus late hit out of bounds call on their final drive of the Dolphins game. The Panthers benefited on that call as well. The difference between the good teams and the bad are that the good ones take the benefits and make the most out of them.

  108. I have read all the posts here and all I can say is that everyone has his/her own opinion. With that being said this is my opinion. Whether there should have been a flag or not, it was thrown. However a barely known safety, from a team that has been beneficiary of a few flags that allowed them to win at least 2 of the last 3 games, should not be so outspoken about an eventual HoF qb of Brees’ caliber. I live in the Charlotte area and think that “Scam Newton” and the “Punthers” should not even be classified in the same area code as the Saints.

  109. Typical Mike Mitchell. Talking smack without being in a place to do so. This will be the last time you hear his name in the headlines. Hope he enjoys his 15 minutes

  110. @ coolzog who said “I don’t know why Brees would complain, cheap shots on quarterbacks is the only reason he has a superbowl ring.”

Well, it wasn’t only the cheap shots against Favre in the 2009 NFCCG, it was also the 5 or 6 terrible calls against the Vikings, including the phantom PI call on Leber. When Brees was shown the replay that clearly showed that Leber didn’t touch the WR and asked what that was, Brees said “pass interference”.

Brees is a great QB, but, obviously, being truthful is not something he places a high priority on.

  111. Would appreciate anyone who checks out my podcast that Mike Mitchell actually made the statement on. “FnA” Podcast, embedded in the article in “stop being soft”.

    We’re on itunes too.
