Patriots release running back Leon Washington

Leon Washington AP

The Patriots waived running back Leon Washington on Saturday. The move was disclosed in the NFL’s daily transactions.

The 31-year-old Washington, a long-time special-teams ace, has appeared in two games as a reserve for New England in 2013.

In a corresponding roster move, the Patriots promoted rookie defensive back Justin Green from their practice squad. An undrafted free agent from Illinois, Green (5-11, 195) has been on the Patriots’ practice squad throughout the season.

The Patriots have three cornerbacks on the injury report: Aqib Talib (hip), Alfonso Dennard (knee) and Kyle Arrington (groin). Safety Steve Gregory (finger) is also on the report.

Bumout. Always liked the way Washington played the game, even when he was playing for that other AFC East team whose name I can’t remember.

Great player! But, a daily occurrence in the Not For Long league. Best to you, Leon in your next career!

    .

The good news : you’ve been promoted from the practice squad and you’re starting on national TV Sunday night.

The bad news : it’s against that Manning fella

He’s been a complete waste of a roster spot.

Used to be a pretty dynamic play maker for the Jets… He could do it all run, catch, special teams… He was best when he’d catch short passes out of the backfield and turn on the yardage…

He must be getting worn out? that the Hawks & now Patriots released him…

Wonder if he’ll end up back here now that the price is right?

Way overdue. Poor guy just can’t stay healthy. Got enough of those. Maybe time to pack it in Leon.

Remember the controversy surrounding Washington when he was giving the finger on his rookie trading card?

Once the Hawks signed Harvin, Leon was immediately expendable, both from a playing standpoint, and from the need to trim his pay scale under the cap, (since we had just busted the budget with Percy). But to everyone’s delight we’ve found out this year that Golden Tate, can also be a major weapon on Special Teams.

None of that detracts from the fact that Washington, has been a special player with huge talents. I wish him all the best in the future.

Wouldn’t hurt the Redskins to sign him up for kick return duties…

Waste of roster spot. I am surprized Pats paid him until now!

If Wrecks Ryan doesn’t grab him, he’s a good “shadow roster” player in case the Pats need depth

Not sure if I remember right. Several years ago, didn’t the Jets keep Washington and cut Woodhead?

I would rather we still had Woodhead.

@patsbrat you’re thinking of joe mcknight….obviously one would rather have woodhead though haha

and as a Jets fan, I don’t want him on the Jets to play but this offseason I’d love if he signed a one day contract and retired with them although I’m pretty sure he won’t feel that kind of allegiance

Danny Woodhead was cut by Wrecks Ryan, which was the best thing for him as he’s had great success with the Patriots and Chargers.

Back to Seattle Leon? Return game has been ok with Tate and now Harvin, but he singlehandedly had won a couple games with returns over the years, and had a solid year last year.

Would be a solid veteran come playoff time if they have the roster space.

Leon will always be appreciated and remembered by the 12th Man. He single handedly won or at least put us back in some crucial games. I wish him well wherever he ends up.

    Jets please bring Leon home!

New England fans are so cutthroat.

Leon Washington is a DIRTY Player, he would sucker punch defensive players any chance he got. He’ll be looking for a lawyer soon to keep him out aof jail.
