Alex Smith gets picked but Chiefs get lead back

Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith doesn’t get intercepted often, but it hurts the Chiefs when he does.

Smith was intercepted by Marcus Gilchrist in the third quarter of Sunday’s game against the Chargers and Gilchrist returned it inside the Kansas City 20-yard line to set up a short Danny Woodhead touchdown. That score lifted the Chargers to a 24-21 lead and it snapped Smith’s streak of throws without an interception at 133.

Smith didn’t let the interception throw him too far off his game, though. Smith went 4-of-5 on the next Chiefs possession and then hit Anthony Fasano for a four-yard touchdown that put the Chiefs back in front. It’s Smith’s second touchdown pass of the day and he’s thrown for 213 yards overall to help the Chiefs offense to a productive day.

He may need to keep piling on points. Linebackers Tamba Hali and Justin Houston are both done for the day, which will leave the Chiefs shorthanded in the pass rush as they try to keep Philip Rivers from getting back on top.
