Chargers win a shootout over Chiefs

e595552b2fee52083cca02614e6935f1 AP

They played an old fashioned AFL/AFC West shootout in Kansas City on Sunday and Philip Rivers got the last laugh.

Rivers hit Seyi Ajirotutu for a 26-yard touchdown with 24 seconds left to play to give the Chargers the lead, the eighth lead change of the game, and the San Diego defense sacked Alex Smith with five seconds to play to hold for a 41-38 victory. The touchdown capped a tremendous day for Rivers, who completed 27-of-39 passes for 392 yards and three touchdowns to keep the Chargers knee deep in the race for the second Wild Card in the AFC.

Staying there may have much to do with how a few injured players fare after leaving Sunday’s game. Running back Ryan Mathews didn’t return after hurting his hamstring, wide receiver Eddie Royal’s absence opened the door for Ajirotutu and right tackle D.J. Fluker had to be helped off the field after Nick Novak’s extra point made it 41-38 in the fourth.

Kansas City sacked Rivers on the play before the touchdown, but it was another quiet day for their pass rush before that point. Linebackers Tamba Hali and Justin Houston left with injuries in the first half and didn’t return as the Chiefs ran their streak without a sack to 11 quarters before Eric Berry dropped Rivers in the fourth. Berry had a costly pass interference penalty earlier on the winning Charger drive to add to a rough day for a Chiefs secondary left hanging by the lack of pressure on the quarterback.

The silver lining for the Chiefs’ second-straight loss is that their offense showed it could hang in a shootout. Alex Smith drove the Chiefs 55 yards in six plays to grab the lead before Ajirotutu’s touchdown and threw three touchdown passes overall on the day. Jamaal Charles ran 14 times for 115 yards and two touchdowns and Donnie Avery got behind the San Diego defense twice for big gains.

The dark cloud is that a Broncos win on Sunday night will mean the Chiefs face a must win against the Broncos next week to have any realistic chance at winning the AFC West. If they don’t have Hali and Houston, they might not have a realistic chance at that victory.

Its official! the wheels have come flying off……

  2. realfootballfan says: Nov 24, 2013 4:39 PM

Guess mentioning the Chief defense in the same breath as the ’01 Ravens or ’85 Bears was a bit premature, heh?

  3. citynative says: Nov 24, 2013 4:40 PM

Ironic that when the Chiefs started facing NFL starting QB’s for once during their schedule, the Chiefs start losing.

  4. 1rockyracoon says: Nov 24, 2013 4:40 PM

Chiefs play first string QB’s and lose both games. Hopefully for them, they will play back ups in the wild card game. I guess Reid had to do a better job. Do their fans actually do a stereotypical Native American chant? Wow, is it still 1991?

Exposed!! Fraud!! Broncos nation is happy today!!

  6. quarterbackjudge says: Nov 24, 2013 4:44 PM

I don’t get why teams try to throw a screen pass with the game on the line instead of just trying to get 1 little receiver open on a Hail Mary.

If you were to tell me KC scored 38 points against any team in any game, I would’ve assumed they would’ve won by quite a margin.

So much for that defense, at home no less!

  9. yarc33 says: Nov 24, 2013 4:45 PM

Andy Reid lost this game. Why did he take a timeout with over 18 seconds left on the play clock on the final TD drive? They could have milked the clock way down. FIREABLE offense. He is a terrible clock manager.

    HELL OF A GAME

  11. therealtrenches says: Nov 24, 2013 4:47 PM

Chiefs fans, we TRIED to tell you that Andy doesn’t know how to manage the clock — and suffers mind numbing, soul-crushing bouts of stupidity — at the end of big games. But you wouldn’t listen. Get used to it. And hope that your team is up by 30 going into the fourth quarter if it’s playoff time. Otherwise, you’re doomed.

    Signed, Eagles fans.

  19. doctorrustbelt says: Nov 24, 2013 4:58 PM

San Diego showed some stones in that one.

San Diego Defense allowed Kansas City to pass for more yards than their season average…. I wonder what Cincinnati (who averages 58 more passing yards than KC) will do to San Diego?!?

That said…. Cincinnati’s Defense isn’t playing nearly as well as Kansas City’s Defense.

  20. unfkwthabl says: Nov 24, 2013 5:02 PM

KC started without 40 of their offensive line and lost Houston and Tamba in the first half..

SD had only 3 points until both of those guys were out…

Hard to play the pressure d that KC plays when your 2 best defenders go out mid game.

Still only lost by a 25+ yard TD with just seconds left.

Lets be honest, KC is going to be a wild card at best and maybe get a first round win… not bad for coming off a 2014 season.

  21. joetoronto says: Nov 24, 2013 5:11 PM

Reality is setting in, the Chiefs are who we thought they were.

They showed a stat during the game that said in the last 4 games, the Chiefs only had 1 sack, while allowing 13.

    House of cards.

  22. shogunassasin30 says: Nov 24, 2013 5:19 PM

Sweet Defense you have there KC. Seems to me you guys have more little indians than Chiefs..Welcome back to playing first string quarterbacks.

  23. sullijo1 says: Nov 24, 2013 5:20 PM

I thought the Chiefs 12th Man made a HUGE difference…..I mean they really disrupted the Chargers and helped their D hold the Chargers to only 31 points in the second half.

Without the most AWESOME 12th man in the league, the Chargers may have scored 60 today.

Way to go Chiefs fans! Way to go!

  24. sullijo1 says: Nov 24, 2013 5:22 PM

There are 42 year olds in KC that have never seen their team play in a Super Bowl…….there are 20 year olds that have never seen them win a playoff game!

It’s good to see the Chargers pull one out like this. I fully expected them to blow it, and the game end with Rivers screaming at a ref. Good on ya lads! You won!

If Fluker has to miss any time it will be huge for the Chargers. At first I didn’t understand the Chargers selecting him in the first round of the draft, but quite unexpectedly he has played as well as any of the more high-profile tackles taken before him and has done a lot to repair a previously shoddy Chargers o-line.

Frankly, I’m amazed Ryan Mathews made it this far into a season without getting injured.

  34. trunks2312 says: Nov 24, 2013 6:04 PM

    @giantenemybird

and the chargers are missing their top FOUR pass rushers (Ingram, Freeney, Johnson, English), top two WR (Alexander, Floyd) and the Oline is a mess on the injury front. No exuses dude. This is the NFL. Injuries happen and the next guy has to step up.

  35. r502 says: Nov 24, 2013 6:14 PM

Honest chiefs fan knows tha 9-0 was a mirage. It is not surprising that this team may end up losing 4 of 6 or 5 of 7 to finish off the year. Oh yeah, one and done in the playoffs too. You don’t get soft games in the playoffs, and Alex Smith’s act won’t fly playing the ‘don’t screw it up’ game plan.

Ya, those starting QB’s like… Vick, E. Manning, and Romo. And Keenum and Campbell have proven to be the better starters. Clowns with no knowledge, priceless. The only ones offended by the chiefs record are those who don’t realize they were 2-14 last year. 9-2, deal with it.

Been saying a couple weeks now: Denver’s biggest AFC West showdown to date was going into SD and beating the the division’s 2nd best team. This one would have been a snoozer without a big KC assist from the officiating crew, who called perhaps the most unbalanced game I’ve watched all year.

    =========================

Cincinnati’s defense as a whole is playing better than the Chiefs defense. The Chiefs live and die by the pass rush, if they don’t get multiple sacks a game then they suck. The Bengals defense doesn’t rely solely on sacks to be a dominant defense

  47. 1rockyracoon says: Nov 24, 2013 7:36 PM

Reid is a good coach and has done an excellent job in KC this year, but one thing he will never do is change. The same flaws he is starting to show now are the same flaws he had his first years as a head coach. It will frustrate KC fans. His clock management has always been awful. Good luck to KC fans and get used to “I gotta do a better job.”

  48. truths4all says: Nov 24, 2013 7:43 PM

Now that the Chiefs are not playing teams with backup QBs, its tough facing the reality that their gaudy record is all smoke and mirrors.

Now, Chief fans know how Eagles fans have felt when their team falls apart when they must play first tier NFL teams instead of the easy pickings of those teams with losing records.

BTW, injuries? Every team has them and some teams have lots more players sidelined and other teams have lot more starters on their IR.

Chief fans, there is no crying in football.

  49. thebirdofprey2 says: Nov 24, 2013 8:18 PM

Many of us said it when looking at the Chiefs schedule that from Week 11 on you will start finding out if they are the real deal or not. 2 losses in a row just prove they weren’t this dominant force.

Their defense playing at home got whupped, Chiefs fans are pointing to injuries but EVERY team has been dealing with their own all season that was clear how many back up and 3rd string QB’s faced the first half of the season.

Chargers, Broncos and Colts games remaining, a Wild Card on the road may be the best outcome.

  50. yourmomsnewfriend says: Nov 24, 2013 10:11 PM

While Alex Smith is miles better than the horrible QB’s who have come and gone in KC for a generation, he’s still not good enough to get them where their fans want them to be. It’s one of the reasons why SF was more than willing to part ways with him, even though he had been winning for them. Until KC finds a way to draft a true franchise QB, they will always face the same music.

As for the Chargers, they played exceptionally well, in the toughest stadium in the league. Question is, can they make it through the next five-weeks with enough wins to possibly get that sixth seed?

Yeah, and the Raiders would have beat the mighty Titans if their kicker didn’t shank a couple, their QB was taller, and their secondary wasn’t stupid. Shut up.

  52. justamoguy says: Nov 24, 2013 11:22 PM

    truths4all & thebirdofprey2,

just want to make sure I am reading your posts correct.

The only reason the Chiefs won 9 straight game is because those teams had injures in the key position of QB, and if those teams had their starter playing we would have not won……

    But…..

When the Chiefs have injuries to key players, well that is just an excuse?

    LOL.

Oh and all your Denver fans may have wanted to wait till AFTER your team blew a 24 point lead before talking crap.

Now can someone please remind me what people were saying about a team that scored mainly due to defense a couple of weeks ago?

  53. jjackwagon says: Nov 24, 2013 11:24 PM

All Raider fans can suck it. Chiefs are still 9-2 and all of you wish your team was that good. No one ever said the Chiefs were going 16-0 this season. Good game Chargers it was back and forth and you guys won this one. Nice to see the Broncos 24 point lead evaporate & they are in a dogfight in NE.

  54. swchiefsfanatic says: Nov 25, 2013 1:06 AM

Tamba and Justin going down hurt, its not the same as the injuries in possitions that you are aware of ahead of time and prepair for. Hope it’s not prolonged.
That said SD fans just shut up, you wont make the playoffs you know it, we know it, denver fans now it. I mean come on..
KC is playoff bound thats great they are playing above expectations and fans are exited. Denver on the other hand was many peoples sb pick to begin with, including mine and im a kc fan 100%. They have somthing going there and i hope for there sake that they can make somthing out of it this year or maybe next, cause its not sustainable.
KC is still there hanging around with that losa to NE tho, gonna force yall to step it up closing this season out.

  55. boltfansmith says: Nov 25, 2013 2:19 AM

Hali and Houston missing… Heck the Bolts are missing half their o-line, top 3 olb, and 2 best receivers still compete with every team they have faced this season. Chiefs overrated!

  56. qdf1977 says: Nov 25, 2013 10:48 AM

As a Chiefs fan, it never surprises me how much we never get any respect in the NFL. From the media to general fans of the sport. I remember in 2003 when we started the season 9-0 and finished 13-3with that heartbreaking loss to Indy in the Wild Card game, everyone said that the Chiefs were all “smoke and mirrors”. But we beat and put up massive amounts of points against everyone we played against. Now here we are again, start the season 9-0 and lose our next 2 and we’re “frauds” and we’ve been “exposed”. Yeah, granted, we lost a nail-biter yesterday in the last seconds of the game, but we’re still a solid team. It’s so funny how the Panthers can win 7 in a row and they’re “the team to look out for” and “serious contenders”, and we go 9-0 and we’re not the real deal and “overrated”. Can we address the elephant in the room on how the Broncos blew a 24-0 lead in the second half of the game yesterday against a Patriots team that doesn’t have the veteran wide receiver core that Brady normally has? What does that make the Broncos? Oh yeah, the excuse is “Manning can’t play in the cold” because he’s either getting up there in age, or that he played most of his career in a dome. That’s a legitimate excuse, I guess, compared to the Chiefs excuse that we lost Houston and Hali in the 2nd quarter and we couldn’t pressure Rivers. I also remember hearing that the Chiefs weren’t going to do well because Smith can’t throw downfield. He can’t put the team on his back and put up points. I guess we’ll just sweep that argument under the rug and criticize something else, then.

You are spot on. I tried to make the point weeks ago but som knuckle head chiefs fan started ranting how Andy does not pick the players anymore. Told him about game management…did not listen. For real this guy has Doug Peterson for his off coord. Just wait you will see. I always said he was Marty Shottenheimer 2. What did he say in his press conference that that one was on him?
