Panthers win seventh straight, beat Dolphins 20-16

Olivier Vernon, Cam Newton AP

Winning seven games in a row is impressive enough.

Winning them the way the Panthers are winning them lately is little short of amazing.

Cam Newton authored his third straight fourth-quarter comeback, as the Panthers escaped to beat the Dolphins 20-16 on the road to improve to 8-3.

Newton capped another impressive late-game drive (which included going for a fourth-and-10 deep in their own territory) by hitting Greg Olsen for the game-winning score.

After beating the Patriots Monday night the same way, the Panthers are on an amazing run. They used to lose all the close games, and Ron Rivera’s 5-14 record in games decided by a touchdown or less still doesn’t look good. But they’ve won three straight that way (including on the road at San Francisco), establishing them as NFC contenders.

Games against the suddenly hot Buccaneers and two against the Saints loom, but the Panthers proved worthy by escaping on a day which seemed destined to be a trap game.

    The Dolphin OC needs to be fired and he needs to take his collage QB with him! The team is a mess and the head coach and GM need to be fired too! Joke of a coaching staff and owner!!!!

    Can someone please tell me WHY ON EARTH the fastest man on the football field improvised some some bizarre inexplicable pirouette in his route – when he was BEHIND THE DEFENSE. All Wallace had to do was stay with his route — and he had some kind of moronic meltdown. It looked like a kid on the playground trying his first game of football.

    Unbelievable.

  8. ialwayswantedtobeabanker says: Nov 24, 2013 4:37 PM

    Wallace cost the team the game, and may have cost them a playoff berth. That was just bad football.

  9. riekki says: Nov 24, 2013 4:37 PM

    Flop…? You mean his first play of the game when Wake drove the crown of his helment into Newton’s chin…Nice call

    Total flop. The challenged call the Dolphins had on a reception was a horrible call. I’ll take the makeup. :))) The Bills and Seahawk games woulda had them 10-1. Oh well. Keep it up Rivera and we’ll talk at year end about you keeping your job. ;) WTG Ron!!!!

  12. FinFan68 says: Nov 24, 2013 4:39 PM

    It seems every game I have watched this year the officiating has been horrible. This one was no exception. There were bad calls throughout the game for both teams. It is starting to look like there are 3 teams involved in every game…Home, Visitors, Officials. Missed a helmet shot on a QB, saw one on a defenseless receiver in the EZ but picked the flag up with no explanation. Blatant holds and blocks in the back on both sides were rarely called. Cam slipped and got an extra 15 yards tacked on during the game-winning drive. There was also at least one questionable review reversal with only a partial explanation. I am in no way blaming the loss on the officials. What I am saying is that these poorly officiated games destroy the integrity of the game and are getting harder to watch every week.

  13. northeastkiller says: Nov 24, 2013 4:40 PM

    Hey, Mike Mitchell, how’d you like that ACTUAL flop by your own QB?

  14. steverolley says: Nov 24, 2013 4:40 PM

    Kuechly must have pics of the refs or something because two weeks in a row they’ve picked up flags in the end zone for him…. wow

  16. grogansheroes says: Nov 24, 2013 4:45 PM

    I see they keep picking up end zone flags on Kuechly. I guess Cam is the new golden boy and will henceforth get all the bogus calls. Brees. Brady, and Manning are all on the back nine. The NFL needs the next generation of players to promote the brand.

  17. Mr. Wright 212 says: Nov 24, 2013 4:45 PM

  18. dkaye179 says: Nov 24, 2013 4:45 PM

    Wallace had 1 touchdown, and probably would’ve had 4 if Tannehill could’ve put it on him the other 3 times he got open deep.

  21. jason1980 says: Nov 24, 2013 4:51 PM

    Panthers are gonna have to bring more to the table if they expect any playoff action. They barely beat the Dolphins who are mired in controversy. Just for measure, when’s Cam going get some class, QB’s don’t celebrate first downs, and dance in the end zone??

  22. ialwayswantedtobeabanker says: Nov 24, 2013 4:51 PM

    Can someone please tell me WHY ON EARTH the fastest man on the football field improvised his route with some some bizarre inexplicable pirouette before he’d even tracked the ball – when he was BEHIND THE DEFENSE.

    All Wallace had to do was stay with his route and it was ballgame.

    Inexcusable mistake — cost the Dolphins the game, and may cost them a berth in the playoffs.

  23. ilovefoolsball says: Nov 24, 2013 4:58 PM

    The Panthers are winning but they’re showing they’re very vulnerable to the pass rush and the deep ball.
    Those are two things that New Orleans does well. It will be interesting to see how those two teams match up.

    The Panthers D is winning games, along with some incredibly “fortunate” officiating. Not Newton.

    As a seahawks fan I’m sick of stupid Panther fans complaining or somehow justifying losing to the seahawks. Yes Williams fumbled late in the he fourth quarter.

    But to completely disregard that the seahawks had 2 red zone turnovers meaning they lost points. Please stop saying stupid stuff about how you should have won, fact is you didn’t and your team has responded well as many seahawks fans expected after seeing your team play. I do however suspect the panthers may have peaked and too early I might add.

    Other teams are yet to have peaked ala my seahawks who were kissing 4 of 5 starting offensive lineman for most of he year until last week and they just got back Percy Harvin.

    I like the panthers a lot. I like how they play and their style. But they seem to be reading their press coverage. Now their starting to to pop off a the mouth and I hope that doesn’t catch up to them , please beat the Saints so we can have a 2 game lead in the nfc.

    Go cam he’s one of my favorites.. Go Hawks.

  28. fishyinalittledishy says: Nov 24, 2013 5:13 PM

    Watching the dolphins is painful. I am really hacked off. This is a team that sucks you in to thinking they are good not great but good and then totally inept the next. The defence is better than good and I can’t help thinking there stats would be easier on the eye if our offence would give them something to work with. All these empty back fields can’t be good I thought part of this game was about deception who does Sherman think he has at his disposal Marino, Duper and Clayton.

  29. dolphins4 says: Nov 24, 2013 5:21 PM

    The Dolphins have the worst offensive line and the most stupid runningbacks in the NFL who only run backwards.Their coaches are way too conservative on offense and on defense.They have a wide receiver who the defense couldn’t cover deep and they quit throwing him the ball in the second half.

  30. llisaraye2000 says: Nov 24, 2013 5:21 PM

    It’s amazing what people will say. The Panthers won the game…Cam Newton manages the games therefore he is a huge part of the winning along with the defense. Give credit where credit is due. Dancing in the end zone is his thing, and I find nothing wrong with it. The person that said he has no class obviously knows nothing about having class. The Dolphins played a terrific game. Panthers won…end of story.

  31. thedownwardspiral says: Nov 24, 2013 5:22 PM

    Wonder how Mitchell feels now about QB’s flopping when his team benefits from a huge one on the last drive.

    Agreed. Panthers will still miss the playoffs. Cards own the head to head and they will both finish 11-5.

  35. laserw says: Nov 24, 2013 6:05 PM

    The idiots who support that Griffin fraud in Washington better hope that he emulates Cam Cheating in Carolina – both are wusses and overrated running backs who think they can throw – plus Cam cheated in college – both share self importance and huge egos that don’t translate into making anyone else better on their team.

    But I think that Cam Cheating at least matured one or two years and is now about 12 years old maturity wise. That would make him two years more mature than the Washington fraud who is regressing at an alarming rate and just can’t handle bad news.

    Wonder if Cam’s coach plays his bad plays so he can learn from them. Apparently in Washington their draft dud gets self-esteem classes so he feels real good about being worthless.

  36. blackngold4life says: Nov 24, 2013 6:14 PM

    If the Dolphin QB doesn’t keep under throwing Wallace he scores 3 times..even the 1 he caught was a dead duck and I’m surprised Wallace made a play on the ball.

  37. scmems07 says: Nov 24, 2013 6:18 PM

    Cam is definitely showing improvement, he had a bad game but came up when needed, problem with cam is he hadn’t been a qb his team could depend on in big games in his first two years so it’s hard to believe he has changed, but he is on the right path, refs bailed out the Panthers on two terrible calls.

    Props to Miami though, they could easily give up and fold with all the problems, injuries and o line shuffling but they keep playing hard and with their remaining schedule could make the playoffs. This team could be really good if they had a good o line, tannehill and the defense are keeping this team above water.

    For all you Dolphin fans that don’t show up shame on you, your team needed you today you could be the difference during these close games. Ok the offence isn’t great but they play hard and the owner is granted a bit odd at times but he has tried to put a team together. We really are becoming a flakey ball club if our lack of support carries on like this. The fans that do show up make a lot of noise and fair play to them if anybody has the right to criticize its them.

  40. handshaubsforadollar says: Nov 24, 2013 8:09 PM

    @scmems07 Refs also missed a helmet to helmet call on Cam and overturned a call that was clearly dropped by Miami. The bad calls went both ways today and what all the Miami and Pats crybabies can’t come to grips with is that those calls didn’t hand the Panthers the game, their offenses couldn’t get the job done and couldn’t get Carolina’s offense off the field in the 2nd half. That’s why they lost and the Panthers won.

  41. hdahs143 says: Nov 24, 2013 8:18 PM

    Those calls pulled points off the board for both Miami and the Pats. You are kidding yourself

    WAAAA PATRIOTS GAME WAAAA OFFICIALS I saw bad calls both ways in both games, is it just the AFC East in general or do the Cam haters just keep refreshing the page to troll on stories.

    The last drive, call that a “flop” all you want, it was more of a slip than anything that just happened right as the defensive player pushed him AFTER he was 2-3 yards out of bounds, of corse if he “fake smiles” or celebrates he’s superficial or just simply a jerk. Get off the boards trolls, your time could be better used in a more productive way…

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    It was a slip and he was not pushed I didn’t like the call but I can see how the refs thought a flag was deserved.
    As for Cam, he is better than he has been in the past but it is still annoying. He can be great but he wants the attention and adulation too much. Name one great QB in the entire history of the NFL that had a signature look at me move. Just one. Unitas, Marino, Montana, Young, Elway, Tarkenton, Staubach, Graham, Luckman, Bradshaw, Favre, Brady, Manning, Brees. None of those guys have ever done something as self-centered as Cam’s showboat superman stuff. The only Good QB that may come close is Rodgers’ discount double check thing but I don’t think he’s done that for a while. I could be wrong on that one because I haven’t paid attention to it. He is getting better with what he says though. Maybe he will mature enough to drop the antics.
    Wow. I was half-expecting the Panthers to lose today. After all, they had just defeated the 49’s and the Patriots in back-to-back weeks while each just had their bye. The Dolphins are a good team with good coaches. It was the classical “trap game”. In the words of Mike Florio, ” When I see them get hit in the mouth, and come back and win then I will believe that they are a legitimate contender”. Ya”ll enjoy the hate.
  51. tthrush1 says: Nov 24, 2013 10:22 PM
    Mr Wright – his ignorance? You are aware that there are TWO wildcard spots, right? So you’re saying the Cards will be 11-5, the Panthers will be 11-5, and some unknown third team (SF?) will get a WC. Only if they’re 12-4.
  52. tthrush1 says: Nov 24, 2013 10:30 PM
    Follow up: the entire NFC North has already lost at least 5, so unless 2 of them win out, there’s not a team there that makes it in over an 11-5 Carolina. In the East, same thing. Out west, SF MUST go 12-4 to knock out Carolina, as they lose a tiebreaker to the Panthers. So if Carolina can finish 11-5, they’re in. Maybe as the 5, maybe the 6, but most likely in.
    yeah, Tanny just showed some flash…. for the first time… but reality is he can’t close in the red zone….
    the O line is the worst in football
    the RBs are trying to pull college stutter stepping and reversing field for 5 yard losses
    and any time there is a bad turn of events, like that end zone flag that got picked up with 3 minites to go in the first half, the whole team falls apart.
    when the officials decided not to call the defenseless receiver penalty, the Phins defense went flat footed for a quarter and a half and the offense stopped running routes…. the entire team goes PREVENT when they have any sort of lead… and playing not to lose… makes you lose every time….
