Vikings, Packers play to a tie

Matt Flynn AP

Good news for the Packers: they gained ground in the NFC North on Sunday.

Bad news for the Packers: it was just a half-game.

The Packers and Vikings played to a 26-26 tie at Green Bay’s Lambeau Field on Sunday afternoon. It is the first tie in an NFL regular-season game since the Rams and 49ers finished deadlocked at 24 in San Francisco a season ago.

In some ways, the Packers were fortunate to scratch out a tie, considering how poorly they played for most of the first three quarters of the game. They trailed 23-7 early in the fourth quarter before third-string quarterback Matt Flynn led a comeback to send the game into the extra period.

Then, in overtime, the Packers came out rolling, and when Flynn hit wideout Jarrett Boykin for 34 yards down the left sideline, Green Bay had first-and-goal at the Minnesota 7. With a touchdown, the Packers would win the game.

Instead, the Vikings’ defense held firm, and when a Flynn pass to Jordy Nelson fell incomplete in the endzone, the Packers took a 20-yard Mason Crosby field goal as a consolation prize.

The Vikings’ first drive in overtime ended in three points, too, with Blair Walsh connecting on a 35-yard field goal with 3:54 left. As they did all game, the Vikings leaned on their ground game, with Adrian Peterson (32 carries, 146 yards, one TD) and Toby Gerhart (eight carries, 91 yards) doing the heavy lifting. The Vikings had a chance at a touchdown, but rookie wideout Cordarrelle Patterson could not haul in a deflected pass in the endzone.

That was it for the excitement in Green Bay. Both offenses stalled thereafter, and the game ended with neither a winner nor a loser — just two teams that knew they could have won if only for some better play here or there.

The regret could be especially strong for the Packers, who are now 5-5-1. With the Bears and Lions losing on Sunday, Green Bay could have edged into a first-place tie. Instead, they are a half-game back entering a huge game on Thanksgiving at Detroit.

The Packers may have a decision to make at quarterback after Flynn completed 21-of-36 passes for 218 yards and a touchdown in place of Scott Tolzien, who was benched for ineffectiveness by coach Mike McCarthy. Of course, if Aaron Rodgers (collarbone) is able to play, there isn’t much of a decision at all for Green Bay to make.

The 2-8-1 Vikings, who turned in a spirited effort at Green Bay, host Chicago next Sunday.

Congratulation to the backup Packers and 4th string QB Matt Flynn for their heroic effort to win the season series from the hapless and tasteless Vikings – for the 4th season in a row!!!!!

    That’s weird.

There were so many Vikings fans that were saying the packers are worse than the Jaguars.

What does that say about the Vikings, when the Vikings exactly as good as the Packers with their fifth string quarterback?

Btw, packers will still win the division.

I said this on the other story on this game and will say the same here.

I think that May have been an historic game. I think that was the first time the rule that says “after the first team scores a field goal in OT, the other team gets a chance to score as well” has come into play. I can’t remember that happening since the rule was set up.

  7. f1restarter says: Nov 24, 2013 5:26 PM

Right now the Packers and Minnesota suck equally.

Ted Thompson will take a lot of heat for not brining in Matt Flynn sooner. The Packers’ defense is horrible. And Marshall Newhouse doesn’t belong on any NFL roster.

  8. skolvikes says: Nov 24, 2013 5:26 PM

Who knew the Packers were this bad without Rodgers?….

    Oh yeah, everybody.

  9. glennsyank13 says: Nov 24, 2013 5:27 PM

Looks like the Packers will keep on playing meaningful games for a while unlike some other team. Sorry Vikings fans. Just keep telling yourself it’s just about draft position anyways. That’s worked out so well the past few years.

  10. usdcoyotesfan says: Nov 24, 2013 5:29 PM

The scoreboard says the Packers tied, but the standings say the Packers won. Detroit and Chicago lost, giving the Packers a chance to take the lead in the division next week.

Mike M should be tared and feathered. “Oh, were a head by 7. lets just run twice and pass if we have to philosoply” football.
Do not blame Tolzien, he did the plays Mike the moron called. Run twice then try and pass your way out of the mess and hope the pass rush doesn’t kill you.

Finally late in the game he actually made a bold move and brought in Flynn. Me thinks someome whispered in his ear, Mike if you lose this game season over, doesn’t matter if Rogers comes back. Your toast.

The defensive line is now thee worst in the league. The pass defenders are the worst in the league. Its pathetic.

I cannot believe they allow ties in the nfl. For the love of god, catch up with the other sports in existence and stop it with this nonsense. Just keep playing!

And bravo, Vikings. You blew a three score lead against a Rodgers-less packer team in one quarter.

    And forget genitailia!

I really wish the Packers hadn’t been playing nickel against the Vikings in OT. Playing 2-4-5 against the best runner of our era is asking for trouble.

They might have been forced into due to injury, but otherwise it’s baffling.

3rd week in a row the Packers couldn’t beat a team with a losing record. How sad is that? That has to sting.

I don’t care if MN doesn’t win another game this year. As long as they didn’t lose to Green Bay, it was worth it.

Packers haven’t won a game since October 27th. zero for November. And I think Detroit will complete the November sweeps for the Packers.

  33. nickynick04 says: Nov 24, 2013 6:07 PM

Ok The Packers without Rodgers suck.
Their Defense sucks even with Rodgers.
    The Vikings are pathetic.
They could not beat the Packer s 4 th string QB Now that’s a fact. So ya gotta eat that one.
The Vikings are losing for draft positioning. Hmmm great formula for success.
The Packers need to address certain positions via the draft , and give FA a shot for a player or two.
The Vikings will not win a Super Bowl anytime soon.
The Packers are closer to a Super Bowl than the Vikes are.
If you disagree , you are in denial or a moran.
    The above are facts
    AP looked great today
    Flynn looked ok
    Lacey looked good
Packer “D” sucks we know that
Vikes ” D ” is not as bad as GB s but not good either
Packer s” O” line needs work and personnel back.

Packers continue to dominate the Vikings.
Again all of the above is fact

  34. contra74isloosbuthole says: Nov 24, 2013 6:07 PM

Another week closer to Rodgers and Cobb. The way Detroit and Chicago are playing Flynn might be able to win the division though. The defense on the other hand still looks atrocious. I have supported Capers for awhile now but I do not see improvement this year. Every season it is something. Fire Capers, promote Kevin Greene, and find a decent strong safety (lacking since we lost Collins).

    1. OT rules should have never changed, Roger Goodell only put them in because his beloved Vikings lost in the NFC Championship to the Saints 4 years ago.

    2. Officiating was completely biased towards the Vikings. Missed a Greenway late hit out of bounds & numerous Pass Interference penalties including 1 in the End Zone during OT.

    3. The announcers were also biased towards the Vikings.

    4. When we get A-Rod back, we’re not losing another game. Packers WILL win the Super Bowl this season.

  38. whatjusthapped says: Nov 24, 2013 6:29 PM

How many 4th Qtr leads have the Vikings had this year and how many games did they lose or tie? Seems like a bunch.

McCarthy had a terrible game plan going in but this was the 3rd game in 4 weeks where a back up Qb, who didn’t get but a handful of snaps during the week, was inserted into a game. That is a recipe for disaster but Flynn managed to at least avoid a loss.

This has to be a serious dilemma for Minnesotans. If they won, they can crow and crow about how that one time in 2013 they BEAT the Packers in a regular season game at Lambeau. Yes! The highlight of their life!!!!

If they lost, they can always fall back on “Well, we don’t care because we are sophisticated. What’s that you say about Wisconsin has 1 million more people? What does that matter? We have libraries and tall buildings. And art. No one else has that, especially Wisconsin. Just because I’ve never left Shakopee doesn’t mean I don’t know about the world. Minnesota has more to life than football. Wisconsin is a faraway place that has nothing.

Now that it ended in a tie…what to do? Probably the norm. Dull, boring, desolation and well done burgers with Kraft singles and ketchup to jazz it up. Nothing is more boring than a Minnesotan.

  46. footballer4ever says: Nov 24, 2013 6:45 PM

LMAO “the announcers were biased towards the Vikings.” That announcing team is Fox’s 5th string team lmao. And enough with the whole 4th string qb. Flynn has started for the Packers before so don’t make it sound like he was an undrafted QB picked up just last week to have a body on the team. This is the same guy who threw 6TD’s. Face it, the Packers are only viable if they have Rodgers at QB. Without him, they suck. Plain and simple.

Rhodes finally got a start and I was pleased with how he’s progressing as a corner back. I just hope he’s not all banged up.

    A. Cole filled in as middle LB better than I thought.

Packers have a legit RB now and with Rogers back they should play great offense, because they need to with that defense.

MN still needs to draft a QB.

  54. guitarfreak21 says: Nov 24, 2013 7:20 PM

Wow there’s a lot of sore packer fans out there! All of them hating on a team that really played hard despite their position. Everyone is so pathetically quick to point out rodgers was out, what about the ENTIRE Vikes seconday, missing starting MLB, a crappy qb that shouldn’t be in the nfl at all, AND a missing pro-bowl mvp TE all coming and cutting those cheeseheads off at the knees? Today, it wasn’t how bad the Vikes are this year, its how bad the packers have been these last few weeks!

  55. Frazier28/7 says: Nov 24, 2013 7:22 PM

And I’ve never heard so much pumped in music during a football game since the 90′s at the Dome, when it then later became banned to do while the opposing team is in the huddle. But, it’s Lambeau so they can get away with it, I guess. Real nice artificial fan support up there at Lambeau, if not for the music that place was very quiet until late in the 4th.

    Here is the reality…

Both Minnesota and green bay have good offenses. Without a good QB, they’re average.

Both Minnesota and green bay have terrible defenses.

Overall, very similar teams. It just shows how important a QB is in todays NFL. And without a decent defense, average offenses look slightly better, but still overall nothing special.

People like Contra and other Viking fans can continue to be douchbags and egg on packer fans, but the fact is is that green bay has that QB, but was sorely missed today. Hence, they’re closer to being a playoff team than Minnesota. Rodgers would have put up 50 points on that team today. Ponder could only put up 26 against a terrible packer defense.

Also — get some decent doctors and trainers and you might be able to create the Aaron Rodgers dynasty that you all promised after that last Superbowl…

All I’ve heard is heard is Drive is old, Jennings is no good since he signed with the Vikings, the Packers have plenty of depth at Te and WR, so it really shouldn’t matter. 94. banlarson says: Nov 24, 2013 8:52 PM

Wow, all I can say is the Packers got dominated for 3 quarters by a 2-8 team with the 32nd scoring defense. A defensive that started a 7th rd backup MLB, played a backup safety at corner and a punt returner at nickel.

Make sure you polish that stock share hanging on the wall. Maybe take a trip this winter to the stadium to see the trophy case you are so proud of…that way you can put your cheese hat on, puff your chest and reminisce about past glory, cause this team is going nowhere for a very long time.

The Packers are still in it. The Vikings failed to win the only game they and their fans care about. They can’t deny playing the Packers is as close to the Super Bowl they ever hope to be, and the Packers can recover and still have a shot at the real thing.

That must hurt. The first thing out of the blocks is the familiar “our buildings are taller, and our lakes are bluer, and our flagpoles are straighter,” or some similar nonsense.

Yes Lacey got a nice hit on Rhodes, but unlike the countless hits Peterson and Toby put on your defense…and kept going, Lacey was knocked out of bounds. See that is what the defense is supposed to do, stop the runner. Guess its different for Packer fans who are used to seeing their own defense shy away from contact or attempting to arm tackle a runner.
