Report: Browner faces one-year substance-abuse suspension

Browner Reuters

Seahawks cornerback Brandon Browner is facing a one-year suspension for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy.

Shortly after Browner denied an NFL Network report that he was facing a suspension for performance-enhancing drugs, NFL Network changed its story and said Browner is facing a suspension under a different NFL policy. Adam Schefter of ESPN then reported that the suspension is actually for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy, and that it’s a one-year suspension.

Browner and his agent both took to Twitter after the initial NFL Network report came out and denied that Browner is facing a PED suspension. But they did not deny that he is facing a suspension at all.

Although the Seahawks have been strong in the secondary this season, they suddenly find themselves facing two cornerback suspensions. In addition to apparently losing Browner, cornerback Walter Thurmond is expected to miss four games while serving his own substance-abuse suspension.

He is a free agent after this year anyways. So bye bye Browner.

  3. shawkfan51 says: Nov 25, 2013 7:54 PM

The annoying part is that Seattle wasn’t likely to re-sign Browner after this year anyway.

In any case, he can leave and take Thurmond with him as far as I’m concerned. I hope neither one of them suits up in a Seahawk uniform again.

Week 14 at Candlestick is gonna be a shocker for you!

  5. nfl4days says: Nov 25, 2013 7:55 PM

So why is it that two PEDs result in an 8 game suspension, but two substance abuses results in a year. So If i get caught juicing twice, i’ll play that year. If I get caught with multiple dui’s, no jail and I’ll play that year. Smoke some weed twice? “What kind of league do you think this is!?”

  6. madpunter88 says: Nov 25, 2013 7:56 PM

Seahawks have five games left so Thurmond won’t miss the last four, technically.

Pete Carroll and the Seahawks organization need to have better control of that team. There’s no excuse for how many substance violations that defense has committed.

  10. classyjacklambert says: Nov 25, 2013 7:57 PM

Well he does play for the Seahawks so PEDs are probably gonna show up one way or another.

Brandon Brower: Was that wrong? Should I not have done that? I tell you, I gotta plead ignorance on this thing, because if anyone had said anything to me at all when I first started here that that sort of thing is frowned upon… you know, cause I’ve worked in a lot of offices, and I tell you, people do that all the time.

What a complete moron. There are two (2) Seahawks on the active roster that have ever tested positive for PED’s, Browner last year and Bruce Irvin in the offseason. That’s well below the league average.

You don’t get any suspension for your first 2 failed recreational drug tests. You are enrolled in the drug program after your first & are tested more often, After the second time your tested even more & required to seek drug “counseling”. It is not until the third positive test that you receive a suspension. The fourth positive test results in a year suspension.

I’m extremely disappointed and hope the Hawks cut this fool, he was gone either way this off seasons with the Hawks depth do might as well get rid of this dumba$$.

The redskins lead the league in suspensions before this so maybe we caught back up, unfortunately 3 of those total seahawks who were suspended consisted of a player who was positive before joining the team then cut, another who was a practice squad player then in and out of active roster but never saw the field and another who in Moffit had a prescription but didn’t file it properly. Those are 3 that the seahawks got in technicalitly only.

Stay clean you damn fools were the best team in the league and it’s not be of jokers like this. But u did fuel the haters tho.

Honestly Browner had a groin injury that looked to be putting him on IR and he probably wasn’t getting resigned next year. Thurmond getting substance abuse hurts more. Sign Winfield because he will have a roster spot when Thurmond comes back for Sehawks playoff run. 10-1 right now and if they get another on Monday Night Football you can say home-field straight to the Super Bowl. Go Hawks!

  80. NotoriousKDV says: Nov 25, 2013 9:04 PM

Here’s the NFL’s dirty little secret. They have a major PED problem. Steroids, HGH, you name it, it’s rampant in the NFL. You can’t keep getting bigger, faster, stronger, the way NFL players have without PED’s being rampant. The thing is they’ve been great at covering it up.

The NFL believes it would be bad for business if their dirty little secret was ever discovered so they’ve made an agreement with the players to have all these failed tests end up being reported for things like Adderall and weed when they’re really in fact for steroids.

I think the NFL Network had it right the first time. Browner’s failed test was for PED’s but then someone reminded the NFL Network about this secret deal so they changed their story.

And as crazy as that sounds, just remember how long the NFL tried to cover up what they knew about concussions. You really think they wouldn’t want to cover up their PED problem especially after what baseball went through with their PED’s problems?

I get a kick out of how much pleasure the haters on these message boards get throw the word “cheater” around. Actually, a team that runs pick plays to get their receivers open, a team that cut blocks repeatedly and intentionally are NOT cheaters even though its against the rules, but if a guy gets suspended for smoking weed or a team gets penalized for pushing a player in the rump to help block a kick, its CHEATERS!!!

What a bunch of 5 year olds.

Funny how the tone of the ‘Hawks fans has changed. Where is all the bravado on how the Saints might as well not even show up?? Looking forward to a great game next week. Go ahead and fire one up at the tailgate, Seattle; it will dull the post game pain…

Whats up with the cheating Seahawks? Mr Carroll got away with murder when he left college. Now what is he doing, ignoring his players problems cheating? They have such a high opinion of themselves, it’s horrible.

  95. jamiebuf12 says: Nov 25, 2013 9:52 PM

while we are piling on……marshawn lynch should have been suspended a while ago…..he postponed his dwi arrest all last year and then they said he will have his trial after this season…….anyone know any other state you can get a dwi and not see trial for two years???

That’s all you brought? Weak! As often as hawks fans are chirping on niners pages did you NOT expect everyone, not just niner fans, to chime n on this one? Don’t these idiots realize they are worthless to the team when they can’t play?

Annnnnnd cue more stories about seahawks being suspended for screwing up yet again.

  99. scmems07 says: Nov 25, 2013 10:03 PM

It’s funny reading all the comments with Seattle fans being so defensive now.

Sorry that we got the charges wrong, it’s a substance abuse suspension everyone! Not PED’s this time! Guess everyone assumed, you know, since the last time he was suspended 4 games last year was for PED’s n all. And since the other corner dodged a suspension for, you guessed it, PED’s, and this team had more players testing positive for, yup, PED’s than any other team over the past 4 years. Can’t believe all you idiots thought it was for PED’s! Get it right!

  102. cheddarisbeddar says: Nov 25, 2013 10:22 PM

I can’t believe the 49ers or the NFL is allowing a player who has been charged with three felonies and has been arrested multiple times on suspicion of DUI in the last year to take the field.

    Only in this “profession”.

Say what you want about the Seahawks, but Harbaugh has a clown show of his own.

  103. beastmode5150 says: Nov 25, 2013 10:28 PM

So just to be clear to you fools, Pete Carroll is supposed to be at each of their houses tucking them in each night and making sure they don’t smoke weed? Or is it he is telling them to smoke weed? Jesus you guys are idiotic…

  104. realitycheckbaby says: Nov 25, 2013 10:30 PM

Y’all better hope the entire team gets suspended because so far no one is even close top the Hawks.

    Not even close.

The NFL needs to put a testing team permanently in Seattle, would save them a lot of travel expenses. Gotta love R. Sherman’s comment to the team about “we’re goin’ to the SB and if you wanna do that stuff then you ain’t going with us”. Kettle, meet pot.

At least the one goofy looking DB they have knows which drug to take. I gotta believe amphetamines will help your play, especially in the 4th quarter.

You ever listen to that guy after a game? He talks a mile a minute, he’s obviously amped!

  111. natepalmer1 says: Nov 25, 2013 11:05 PM

Shocker at Candlestick? Yep, the Seahawks will embarrass the 40whiners yet again, but the 40whiners should forget about Seattle and start worrying about the Cardinals and the Rams embarrassing them at Candledick Park…
    hahahahaha!

  112. @HowdyDoobie says: Nov 25, 2013 11:22 PM

Guy, Browner, Irvin, Mofitt, Barbre, Sherman (overturned) because his specimen cup had a leak. Furthermore Adderall is used as a masking agent for steroids! Now add to those players’ suspensions for DUI’s, and drug use. And Seattle fans are up in arms? Get real!!! Pete Carol is a flim flam man who has cheated every place he coached.

  115. seaeagle707 says: Nov 25, 2013 11:39 PM

Being a three decades fan of the Seahawks, I really do want to know WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON in this organization that there seemingly is no end to the busts for drugs, PED and otherwise? Maybe Pete, should spend a little less time worrying about a Better Seattle, and a little more ensuring a better Seahawks football team?

  116. wheezerswin says: Nov 25, 2013 11:42 PM

  132. TIM says: Nov 26, 2013 8:25 AM

99% of the time it IS PED’s. The League is not allowed to release that info because of the CBA so the player and his agent always lie and say it was only weed when is really roids.Since we know Carroll teaches his defense to hold and commit pass interference on every play and we know the Hawks hand out PED’s to all their players as a matter of team policy so of course it IS PED’s.Fire Pete the Cheat or this will continue .

  133. williamshatnerstoupee says: Nov 26, 2013 11:37 AM

    ——————————————————

We are talking about grown men, in this case getting busted for a recreational herb that has positive healing traits. They arent rapists or murderers man. chill the …. out you bunch of whiney girls.
