Report: Browner faces one-year substance-abuse suspension

Reuters

Seahawks cornerback Brandon Browner is facing a one-year suspension for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy.

Shortly after Browner denied an NFL Network report that he was facing a suspension for performance-enhancing drugs, NFL Network changed its story and said Browner is facing a suspension under a different NFL policy. Adam Schefter of ESPN then reported that the suspension is actually for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy, and that it’s a one-year suspension.

Browner and his agent both took to Twitter after the initial NFL Network report came out and denied that Browner is facing a PED suspension. But they did not deny that he is facing a suspension at all.

Although the Seahawks have been strong in the secondary this season, they suddenly find themselves facing two cornerback suspensions. In addition to apparently losing Browner, cornerback Walter Thurmond is expected to miss four games while serving his own substance-abuse suspension.

  1. The annoying part is that Seattle wasn’t likely to re-sign Browner after this year anyway.

In any case, he can leave and take Thurmond with him as far as I’m concerned. I hope neither one of them suits up in a Seahawk uniform again.

  2. PED’s — And now we know why Seattle’s D has been so dominant…..

Week 14 at Candlestick is gonna be a shocker for you!

  3. So why is it that two PEDs result in an 8 game suspension, but two substance abuses results in a year. So If i get caught juicing twice, i’ll play that year. If I get caught with multiple dui’s, no jail and I’ll play that year. Smoke some weed twice? “What kind of league do you think this is!?”

  4. Brandon Brower: Was that wrong? Should I not have done that? I tell you, I gotta plead ignorance on this thing, because if anyone had said anything to me at all when I first started here that that sort of thing is frowned upon… you know, cause I’ve worked in a lot of offices, and I tell you, people do that all the time.

  5. The entire state of state of Washington could be banned if the NFL really enforced it’s policies. How do you deal with non-stop rain, sleet, and cloud-cover? drugs

  6. Look at the Seahawk fans bailing on him already! “We were going to lose him…” Blah, blah, blah. Own your cheating, roid raging cornerback.

  7. Funny how people think smoking marijuana is “performance enhancing” or “cheating.” Yeah, this news really just gives them negative press but for those of you that think Seattle is winning because of some of their players smoking dope, you don’t know football.

  8. This makes 8 certified Seattle guys caught using PED’s or masking agents since 2010. It is time the league clean up the mess by taking away draft picks. You can’t have one organization cheating to this extent and not confront the situation head on. There are also Seattle players like Richard Sherman who so far have gotten away with PED use. I followed his college career and it was nothing special.

Just a friendly reminder that in 30 minutes you face my Niners…..and there’s a real good chance you’re going 3-8.

  10. Pete the Cheat running a loose ship. did the same thing at USC. karma has something in store for that PacNW team and the fans aren’t gonna dig it one bit.

  11. Next men up. Maxwell and Lane.

Both who helped the Seahawks drop a couple 50 burger wins last December when Browner was out with a suspension and Thurmond was out due to injury.

  12. He was most likely gonna miss most of the remaining games, pry thought he might as well smoke some of that primo LEGAL Seattle weed. Won’t be seeing him in a Seahawks uniform again I reckon.

  13. “PED’s — And now we know why Seattle’s D has been so dominant…..”

Actually it’s because they have faced nothing but scrub teams all year long. I think all 8 teams combined have a total of like 15 wins, because the only good team they faced, the colts, they lost to.

You guys losing isn’t really a shocker anymore. Hope you beat the Redskins tho

  15. Cheattle Cheathawks strike again! What an absolute joke of a team and fan base, so obnoxiously arrogant about a team that has never won anything. Serves you all right, now go buy bigger speakers so you can brag some more about how much artificial noise your team can pump into a stadium.

  16. Silver reports that the topic has already been brought up in a recent team meeting. Center Max Unger and cornerback Richard Sherman addressed their teammates. The message: We’re going to the Super Bowl. If any of you want to do this stuff, go ahead. You won’t be coming with us

That is the kind of guy Sherman really is. Not the dirtbag people accuse him of being

  17. I’ve got to think that HC Carroll knows about the Seahawks rampant drug use, and he looks the other way. He did not play by the rules at USC so why would he now?

What a complete moron. There are two (2) Seahawks on the active roster that have ever tested positive for PED’s, Browner last year and Bruce Irvin in the offseason. That’s well below the league average.

We win because we’re better, not because we cheat. And that’s the part you can’t handle.

  19. For those of you who actually know the rules and have a brain, can a team cut a player under suspension?

  20. Seahawk fans taking the moral highground: if you want thurmond and browner cut then you have to want richard sherman cut too. He got busted with adderall but used the “I drank a teammates waterbottle and didn’t know there was PEDs inside of it” excuse. As if he couldn’t taste a disgusting dissolved pill inside of the waterbottle lol. But wait, richard sherman is really good so I assume you guys believe him right?

  21. I just have to laugh. Seahawks will never live down their reputation as cheaters. There’re just too many instances of suspensions for one drug or another. It’s cheatin’ Pete. You guys better call Zorn to restore some respect to your franchise. Sad but true.

So marijuana is now a masking agent?

I’m not sure what’s scarier. Your will to twist this into a pretzel shape that makes it seems more like cheating, or the fact that you can legally drive, vote, and breed.

You don’t get any suspension for your first 2 failed recreational drug tests. You are enrolled in the drug program after your first & are tested more often, After the second time your tested even more & required to seek drug “counseling”. It is not until the third positive test that you receive a suspension. The fourth positive test results in a year suspension.

  24. Browner just lost millions. His mistake.
Good news is, we can extend Thurmond next year for pennies on the dollar now

  25. Wow some people are dumber than a box of rocks. It was reported that it was Substance-Abuse, meaning that it is not a PED, something more along the lines of Marijuana use….typical though, just because the teams get spanked by the Hawks they want to claim they are cheaters..Last time I checked, smoking weed didn’t give a player a competitive advantage.

  26. sigh…it wasn’t performance enhancing you morons!! good lord I wish some people would actually read the story’s before they go on their rants about “seattle and PED’s” what I would really like is for these idiots to look at the team that they root for and see that they have just as many problems as we do if not more! Now how was it “cheating” for him to smoke pot?? is it performance enhancing?? good lord some of you people are the dumbest I have ever heard. Ill end this by saying that I am a die hard Hawks fan, I hate the fact that these idiot players can’t stay off this crap for just a little while but it is what it is…but some of you act like its ONLY Seattle which simply isn’t the case. Look at whats been happening in San Fran (which most of the negative posts are from…mostly cause they are jealous lol…cue the “we have super bowl rings” crap lol) i love this website but I really wished more intelligent people would post on here…i wished there was an “idiot posting block” for the site lol

  27. Hey, I mean I guess it’s cool to nitpick a guy for smoking pot. It’s not like you can really nitpick much about the Seahawks being 10-1.

If cheating entails from smoking pot, then I am a unicorn that can somehow type.

  28. Always nice to read PFT posts, especially from logicalvoices. When your team is 3 hrs away from helping the Rams get a top 5 draft pick, you tend to have time come up with clever posts that amuse the fans of other teams. No love lost between the niners and the cowboys, but this fan right here will be rooting for a niners rout. Too bad Washington’s best Qb is riding the bench….

  29. The PEDhawks should do themselves a favor and invest in researching how to make their players have larger, more prominent veins. That way, they could inject a lot more PEDs into their players before anyone knows!

  30. Hilarious that this guy vehemently denies PED suspension when he knows its substance abuse suspension, like its somehow better this way. Enjoy your year off idiot

  31. There he is lol logical voices. How dud u like the eagles sweeping u right out of the playoff hunt? Oh what’s this? Your team has a Super Bowl? Ok then it’s ok that your team sucks. Have fun watching a 5-11 season.

  32. Cut him, tired of this nonsense, he’s not worth the headache. I mean dawn dude your hurt, I know you taking something to come back faster but c’mon man you can take those risks.. Pete gave you a chance when u were in the cfl to earn a spot and you caught hard enough to get some playing time.

I’m extremely disappointed and hope the Hawks cut this fool, he was gone either way this off seasons with the Hawks depth do might as well get rid of this dumba$$.

The redskins lead the league in suspensions before this so maybe we caught back up, unfortunately 3 of those total seahawks who were suspended consisted of a player who was positive before joining the team then cut, another who was a practice squad player then in and out of active roster but never saw the field and another who in Moffit had a prescription but didn’t file it properly. Those are 3 that the seahawks got in technicalitly only.

Stay clean you damn fools were the best team in the league and it’s not be of jokers like this. But u did fuel the haters tho.

  33. To seahawkkid69,
    1) Don’t call people idiots if you can’t follow basic rules if writing.
    2) I believe the Seahawks are facing a fine because they have had so many players suspended. This does not happen on every team, just Seattle.

  34. Pretty stupid that players can’t smoke pot een though it’s legal in WA, but let’s be honest 12s…Browner was our one liability in the secondary. Dude gets burned and draws a lot of penalties. I thought Thurmond was better, but now we’ll see what Maxwell and Lane can do. I’m not worried at all.

Best of luck to your future, Browner!

  35. #CheatHawks. Cheating players, and fake front running fans. It was not long ago the CheatHawks were getting blacked out. The 12th man is Texas A&M. Get your own name. Or even better, realize it’s not about you, how bout 65000 clowns.

  36. Well it is great to know that over half of the PFT trolls don’t know how to read. He is not suspended for PED use but probably weed which is as legal as alcohol here in Washington State.

Honestly Browner had a groin injury that looked to be putting him on IR and he probably wasn’t getting resigned next year. Thurmond getting substance abuse hurts more. Sign Winfield because he will have a roster spot when Thurmond comes back for Sehawks playoff run. 10-1 right now and if they get another on Monday Night Football you can say home-field straight to the Super Bowl. Go Hawks!

  37. We win without browner. Goodbye.
Lane is younger, healthier, proven, and drug free.
Winfield and trufant have been contacted to play backup.
If haters want a asterisk by our record for weed, so be it.

  38. What does a 1 year suspension really mean? Is it the rest of this year, 12 months, 365 days from the suspension date, 16 games, are playoff games or the bye week counted?

  39. Here’s the NFL’s dirty little secret. They have a major PED problem. Steroids, HGH, you name it, it’s rampant in the NFL. You can’t keep getting bigger, faster, stronger, the way NFL players have without PED’s being rampant. The thing is they’ve been great at covering it up.

The NFL believes it would be bad for business if their dirty little secret was ever discovered so they’ve made an agreement with the players to have all these failed tests end up being reported for things like Adderall and weed when they’re really in fact for steroids.

I think the NFL Network had it right the first time. Browner’s failed test was for PED’s but then someone reminded the NFL Network about this secret deal so they changed their story.

And as crazy as that sounds, just remember how long the NFL tried to cover up what they knew about concussions. You really think they wouldn’t want to cover up their PED problem especially after what baseball went through with their PED’s problems?

  40. The NFL should be thankful for marijuana. It makes crappy games like the one that’s on tonight watchable.

  41. Seattle fans trying to point out accurate information against the rampant zeidegeist of “guilty because someone said so”….we feel your pain…here’s hoping for a spirited tilt next monday, ya’ll have a great team.

  42. Is he actually ABUSING? Or just USING?
What is the line between using and abusing?

And I find it interesting that he didn’t have issues that involved the legal system, but he couldn’t dodge the NFL.

    Back at ya Saints fan…
I hope RW can clear his head from his admiration for Drew Brees to ensure the game is won first.

  44. Yup, it’s official, between the performance enhancing drugs, substance abuse issues, Pete Carroll, loudmouth defenders who only talks trash to players that don’t make them look dumb, the circus has moved from ny to Seattle. Russell Wilson deserves better.

  45. You guys watching? No wonder you want Alden Smith out… Can’t wait to play in SF. no 12th man!

Russell better wear your Flap jacket! The Legion of Boom! Go Niners!

  46. From all seahawks fans everywhere….

STOP SMOKING WEED DAMN IT!!! yes weed is legal in Washington, anyone older than 21 can smoke it with no consequences except standard dui and outrageous quantities. But c’mon dumba$$, weed is not a performance enhancer it’s a dehancer and anyone saying otherwise is stupid.

Everyone knew be of all the he media attention and hype around Seattle and their ped issues whether fully true or not that this team would be tested regularly… Why would you risk it career over weed retard.. It’s not helping u do anything but laugh at Kevin Hart, eat spicy cheetos, and play black Ops in slow motion.

Anyone claiming they are good at football bc of weed is equal as dumb as these fools. If it was for peds then cut him, he’s probably gone after the year anyway with the talent at the position and the youth..

We still going to stomp a whole in the Saints this week and rest assured the team isn’t on steroids just likes to smoke some ganja. Please don’t spread ignorance the most suspensions in the NFL go to the redskins not seahawks.

  47. I get a kick out of how much pleasure the haters on these message boards get throw the word “cheater” around. Actually, a team that runs pick plays to get their receivers open, a team that cut blocks repeatedly and intentionally are NOT cheaters even though its against the rules, but if a guy gets suspended for smoking weed or a team gets penalized for pushing a player in the rump to help block a kick, its CHEATERS!!!

What a bunch of 5 year olds.

  48. Funny how the tone of the ‘Hawks fans has changed. Where is all the bravado on how the Saints might as well not even show up?? Looking forward to a great game next week. Go ahead and fire one up at the tailgate, Seattle; it will dull the post game pain…

  49. Whats up with the cheating Seahawks? Mr Carroll got away with murder when he left college. Now what is he doing, ignoring his players problems cheating? They have such a high opinion of themselves, it’s horrible.

  50. while we are piling on……marshawn lynch should have been suspended a while ago…..he postponed his dwi arrest all last year and then they said he will have his trial after this season…….anyone know any other state you can get a dwi and not see trial for two years???

That’s all you brought? Weak! As often as hawks fans are chirping on niners pages did you NOT expect everyone, not just niner fans, to chime n on this one? Don’t these idiots realize they are worthless to the team when they can’t play?

Annnnnnd cue more stories about seahawks being suspended for screwing up yet again.

  52. It’s funny reading all the comments with Seattle fans being so defensive now.

Sorry that we got the charges wrong, it’s a substance abuse suspension everyone! Not PED’s this time! Guess everyone assumed, you know, since the last time he was suspended 4 games last year was for PED’s n all. And since the other corner dodged a suspension for, you guessed it, PED’s, and this team had more players testing positive for, yup, PED’s than any other team over the past 4 years. Can’t believe all you idiots thought it was for PED’s! Get it right!

  53. I can’t believe the 49ers or the NFL is allowing a player who has been charged with three felonies and has been arrested multiple times on suspicion of DUI in the last year to take the field.

    Only in this “profession”.

Say what you want about the Seahawks, but Harbaugh has a clown show of his own.

  54. So just to be clear to you fools, Pete Carroll is supposed to be at each of their houses tucking them in each night and making sure they don’t smoke weed? Or is it he is telling them to smoke weed? Jesus you guys are idiotic…

  55. The NFL needs to put a testing team permanently in Seattle, would save them a lot of travel expenses. Gotta love R. Sherman’s comment to the team about “we’re goin’ to the SB and if you wanna do that stuff then you ain’t going with us”. Kettle, meet pot.

You ever listen to that guy after a game? He talks a mile a minute, he’s obviously amped!

  59. Shocker at Candlestick? Yep, the Seahawks will embarrass the 40whiners yet again, but the 40whiners should forget about Seattle and start worrying about the Cardinals and the Rams embarrassing them at Candledick Park…
    hahahahaha!

  60. Top two teams in the league come from states with legalized marijuana. Coincidence? Of course it is. But it sounds fun.

  61. Guy, Browner, Irvin, Mofitt, Barbre, Sherman (overturned) because his specimen cup had a leak. Furthermore Adderall is used as a masking agent for steroids! Now add to those players’ suspensions for DUI’s, and drug use. And Seattle fans are up in arms? Get real!!! Pete Carol is a flim flam man who has cheated every place he coached.

  62. Being a three decades fan of the Seahawks, I really do want to know WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON in this organization that there seemingly is no end to the busts for drugs, PED and otherwise? Maybe Pete, should spend a little less time worrying about a Better Seattle, and a little more ensuring a better Seahawks football team?

  63. Two guys in two days is pretty pathetic no matter how much y’all try to spin it. I think they will wind up with the one seed but still fail in the end

The League is not allowed to release that info because of the CBA so the player and his agent always lie and say it was only weed when is really roids.Since we know Carroll teaches his defense to hold and commit pass interference on every play and we know the Hawks hand out PED’s to all their players as a matter of team policy so of course it IS PED’s.Fire Pete the Cheat or this will continue .
