Report: Seahawks have reached out to Antoine Winfield

AP

The Seahawks will return from the bye this week with a shortage of cornerbacks.

Walter Thurmond is going to start serving a four-game suspension and Brandon Browner is out with a groin injury, leaving the team thin at the position once you get past Richard Sherman. They may be trying to remedy that by bringing back a player who was briefly a member of the team in the offseason and summer.

Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports reports that the team has reached out to Antoine Winfield to gauge the veteran’s interest in returning to the team. Winfield retired at the end of the summer, but he never filed retirement papers and has remained in shape while waiting to see if the right situation to return came along this year.

Seattle may offer just that. They’re one of the favorites in the NFC and coming back would offer Winfield a chance to help the team weather the storm in the secondary now while putting him in good position for a run at the Super Bowl trip that has eluded him throughout his career.

  1. I have faith in Maxwell and lane, but corner depth killed our postseason run in 2005. So, please come back Winfield

I think he’d have to consider playing for the Seahawks.

And of course the hapless and tasteless Vikings already reached out to Winfield, and he just laughed.
    _______

Who needs him? Our fifth-string safety who only plays special teams had to play the slot corner yesterday and he shut down Jordy Nelson.

  3. Jeremy Lane is on the roster and was in for Browner when he was out for the last 4 regular season games of last year, with Maxwell backing him up. In that time span the Seahawks beat their opponents 170-43. Seattle should be ok. Winfield is a good option at nickel corner in the mean time.

  4. Will he be able to sign the contract and just play? Or will they include the Seahawk DB mandatory PED use clause that they put into all of the other DBs contracts?

  5. The Hawks back ups would be starters on most other teams…
    If he comes back great!
If he doesn’t, the Hawks will be fine.
    ‘Brees is licking his chops?’
    Child please!
All he’ll be licking is the turf!

  6. I love all of the Seahawks fans that must suffer from memory loss. Just because you’ve started the season 10-1 doesn’t make you a winning franchise. So what? The Vikings went 15-1 one year, and no one is calling them a winning franchise. The Seahawks have never accomplished anything, have never won a Super Bowl, and certainly aren’t a “winning franchise” historically. That may change this year, but I’d keep my mouth shut until it actually happens (both players and fans).

  7. The fans talking PED are clueless. Thurmond is out for substance abuse (weed which is legal in Washington State).

Seattle has had best depth at CB but with Thurmond out after Browner. Maxwell is solid but Lane like I said before has looked like he took a step back from last year. I can see why they are looking for a nickel CB. I don’t know if Winfield should do it because just like other guys I don’t see a spot on the roster after 4 games. Such bad timing for Thurmond suspension games against Saints, 49ers, and Cardinals. I still think Seahawks can win all remaining games because the offense is starting to click.

  8. Man! All the haters are back in full swing again…lol. Brees is going to get PUNKED on Monday night. If you don’t recall, Seattle beat the mighty Breesus the year after his Superbowl title with a MUCH less talented 7-9 team. So now we’re all supposed to believe that a 10-1 Seattle team is somehow vulnerable because they lost a player at their deepest position? Too, too funny.

  9. I love all these morons who say Pete is a cheater. How does smoking pot make you a better football player? How does it give you any advantage at all?

  10. I hope Winfield joins the Hawks for one final playoff push. Viking fans will watch and cheer him on, while the tasteless and hapless Packer fans will be wishing him the worst and crying in their PBR over the failure of the team to once again meet their unrealistic expectations.

Beastquake mode… awesome 4th quarter run by ML….
Some tried to get the playoffs re-seeded because they didn’t want a team with a losing record to host a game.

  13. Why do they need a corner? Oh yeah, ANOTHER one of their players got caught cheating. What a joke of a team–they talk like they’ve actually won something and they are a bunch of cheating frauds. Se-Adderall!!

  14. There really are no such thing as “retirement papers” to file. Ben Leber (a retired NFL linebcker) ranted about this on KFAN not too long ago. He said that when you retire, you’re retired; there are no “papers” you have to file with any entity whatsoever. He would know.

Define a winning franchise? The Vikings winning percentage prior to this year is .538.

New Orleans, as an example, prior to this season: .437 (Won a SB)

    Your Seattle Seahawks: .481

    San Diego .499
    Philly .482
    Jets .460 (won a SB)
    Tampa .396 (Won a SB)

Until their run over the past decade or so, the Patriots were not a ‘winning’ franchise. Now they are.

Your argument doesn’t hold as much water as you’d like to believe.

  16. I give in…yup, must have been a PED! You got us! I mean, really, some of you can be no older than 13 or 14 years old. When multiple columns say SUBSTANCE ABUSE and specify that it wasn’t a PED, it get’s a little ridiculous to try to credit any of the posts of you fools.

But hey, don’t let the truth get in the way of anything.

“drew brees is licking his chops.” Clearly you haven’t seen Byron Maxwell play. He is just as good as Thurmond and just a little bit meaner. GO HAWKS

    ____________________________________

I love your enthusiasm, but unfortunatley Maxwell does not play the slot. That leaves Jeremy Lane as the likely guy to play the slot and he is an outside cover man. I’d say the “licking his chops” comment is a fair one until we see someone step in to do what Thurmond was doing inside. GO HAWKS

  19. I was psyched to see him join, I was stunned to see him retire.

Nothing against Lane or Maxwell, but I’d really like to see Winfield in a Seahawks uniform again. I hope he gives it strong consideration.

  20. I would love to see Winfield back, but for his sake, only if he is assured to stick with the team through the playoffs. He is a class act, and I was a little embarrassed when we cut him (you can call it retirement, but only to avoid being cut).

And just to clear this up, Thurmond has been playing outside corner with Browner out, not his normal slot position. So we are not talking about Winfield starting ahead of our back up corner Maxwell, Winfield would be playing slot corner and they would both be on the field at the same time.

  21. shayeezy says:

why would he come back, knowing he will be released again as soon as browner and thurmond are back in the lineup?

Because every week in the NFL they give you these rectangular pieces of paper with numbers printed on them. You take this paper to a bank and hand it to a teller and they give you a giant stack of money.

  22. I don’t see them bringing him on. They have solid depth at the position and once they come back there won’t be nearly enough room on the roster for Winfield to stick around through the postseason. Sounds bogus to me.

You’re correct. Both teams are different. Seattle is on a 13 game win streak at home. Saints fans, of all people, should know how hard it is to win on the road against the Hawks. That’s my point.

Seahawks are night and day different than the team N.O. played a few years back. I, for one, have a hard time believing the Saints can get a win there. Especially after how they struggled to beat frisco (who we pounded into submission in Seattle). But hey, on any given Sunday, right?

  27. Seattle fans must be the most overconfident uncultured goons I’ve ever seen. Geezus.

I’m not even going to sit here and say Brees is going to tear it up and the Saints are going to run roughshod. I think it’ll be a fairly close game and the Seahawks do have a great home field advantage, but to hear some of these people yap you’d think they were undefeated and three-time defending champs instead of a team that struggled to beat the Texans and Buccaneers.

Actually Brees had two passing TD’s out of 60 total passes. That’s not close to hanging 36 on a defense.

Hasselbeck had 4 passing TD’s out of 35 total passes. This is closer to hanging 41 on a defense.

  29. Seahawks fans are wired kinda tight here. LOL. Relax fellows, the Saints are indeed a powerhouse, but we’re coming to your house. The advantage is clearly yours. That being said, Seahawks will have to play their best game this season to win this one, even in the Clink. Geaux SAINTS!

I’d say completing 65% of his passes for over 400 yards with 2 TDs and no picks is hanging 36. Saints leading rusher was a 5th string back for a whopping 59 yards who happen to punch in a couple of TDs that Brees got them in position for.

Just for the record: I’m a fan of Drew Brees and everything he’s done for the gulf region since Katrina. I never said that playoff loss to Seattle was his fault. If anything, he kept you in the game.

What I’m saying is that you will not win on the road in Seattle. If this game was in N.O., I don’t think you’d beat them there either. I just don’t think the Saints can beat Seattle. I can’t wait for this game either. It should put to rest who the favorite to win the Superbowl is. IMO

I know Seattle’s history. It’s been more average than bad or good.

I posted the various win % because a winning franchise can have, depending on the fan base, a different meaning. Seattle is not a winning franchise right now. Things change.

You stating that Seattle’s players and fans cannot say anything until the team wins a SB is ridiculous. Also, fans have very little to do with a team winning a SB. We may think we do, but our impact as fans is very small.

However; as I stated above, since the Vikings haven’t won anything, maybe you should take your own advice.

And how did those running games help Houston and Tampa hold leads? If either one of them had been able to run in the third or fourth quarter, they’d have run the clock out, finished another drive perhaps, and walked out with a W. Instead, when it mattered the most, they were unable to run, and lost the games as a result.
