Alfred Morris says Redskins didn’t have best week of practice

If the coaching truism “you practice like you play,” holds true, we may have an explanation for the Redskins rollover last night.

It wasn’t the greatest of weeks,” running back Alfred Morris said, via Mark Maske of the Washington Post. “But you’re gonna have that sometimes. Just because you had a bad week, not that we had a bad week, but sometimes if you have a few bad practices or a few bad [practice] periods doesn’t mean you’re gonna have a bad game.  But like I said, today we just didn’t show up for whatever reason. I don’t know what it was.”

Morris said there was no suggestion before the game that the Redskins were going to be so flat, but denied that the constant swirl of attention around them had played a part.

“I don’t know what’s been written or said,” he said. “I don’t read or watch that stuff. So I couldn’t tell you. But we did feel like we had a great chance to come out here and win. Like I said, we just didn’t show up.”

Morris was then asked if the wheels were coming off the 3-8 Redskins, who have played like they were expecting a seven-game win streak to just appear like it did last season after their 3-6 start.

“It’s just a little adversity, just building our character up,” Morris said. “I don’t feel like our wheels are coming off, to use your analogy. But, I mean, every day we’ve just got to show up and just kind of put this behind us and just continue to just work forward and just take it one game at a time, just watch film on this, see what we can get better at and get ready for next week.”

Of course, it’s possible that the Redskins’ character isn’t being built up, but revealed. They’re a flawed football team on both sides of the ball, and the constant tension that revolves around their quarterback doesn’t seem to be doing anything but growing.

  1. They lost to a better team. I’m not a fan of either team. RGIII won’t be right til next yr. AP was the exception not the rule, that it’s the 2nd season after the ACL reconstruction where the player returns to normal. Skins fans need to hang in there. ———————————————————————————————————–
Shanahan’s biggest drawback is the nepostism that’s def hurting the team.

  2. Before someone on here starts with all of their “national fixed league” crap… And how the Redskins aren’t treated fairly…Remember this

The Cowboys didn’t sit around and cry about all the bad press and talk after they got throttled by the Saints.

They kept their heads up and got back to business.

Just ask JPP and Terrell Thomas…

  3. Part of the problems with the Redskins have to be the lack of draft choices due to the RG3 trade. No top fresh young talent to replace the holes on their roster. 2 dire needs are another WR on the other side of Garcon and pass rushers. Looks like they need help at S, OL and a ILB to replace Fletcher too. With Rams having the Redskins 2014 pick which may be in the top 5, things won’t be getting better next year.

  4. Practice? FOR WHAT?!~!!!

The game on Monday night looked DREADFUL.

My heart sank for every Washington defensive player out there as the offense stank the place up like a eighteen wheeler full of wet crxp rolling down the interstate.

You can only play your defense other team is going to score.

And the defensive coaching is pretty sub par too.

The players are trying their hearts out on defense. but the coaching before the games start just is not that good.

95% of the coaches and players on offense need to be replaced starting at the top.

RG3’s gotta go, he’s past his due date already.

  5. Bench RGMe – Cousins would win games. RGMe is only about stats and “looking good” — they need to just dump that clown.

  6. I am sure that if the DC Eleven were to offer RGIII up in trade that the line to their GM’s office would stretch to the White House. Get serious, this guy is a good player: not a messiah as some wanted to make him out, but a good player nonetheless. The offensive game plan was bad; really bad. It was as if they had not scouted the Niners at all. They kept playing into the strength of the defense instead of attacking the weak links. Case in point: no passes to the TE or RBs, while all the passes thrown to the WRs were near the line of scrimmage.

  7. Fortunately for the Washington football team, there are more games played in just a few days and people will quickly turn their attention to hype for those games, and by Sunday no one will remember.

Unfortunately, they play on national TV again only a week from Sunday, so everyone will be reminded before too long.

  8. If every Redskin were as good as Morris, they’d be a playoff caliber team.

    Obviously, they’re not.

  9. Bad week of practice says we have a high maintenance QB that is more worried about his image then he is the team. It would get old every week having to hear my QB back peddle on everything he says or throw everyone under the bus for his failures.

  10. It must be hard for a guy like Alfred Morris who has had so much success under the Shanahan’s to listen to them catch much of the blame for RG3’s struggles. They might not be perfect but they did right by Morris for damn sure.

  11. Translation – Team has checked out!

Only news that can be better than this is if we see RGIII hanging out with Ryan Leaf.

    Go Eagles!!!!!!!!

  12. I am praying they put Cousins in just to shut this foolishness up. RG3 has flaws. Are we shocked by that? He needs to read the options quicker and stop trying to make the play for the receiver but rather let the receiver make the play for him (with these receivers that’s not gonna happen except for Garcon, but still).

Cousins behind that line will look just like he did last time he got out there. He may release the ball quicker but to who? And will HIS body hold up to all the pressure the skins are facing? They are getting dominated by teams employing simple 4 man rush schemes. Our 5 linemen can’t beat 4 defenders and it’s Robert’s fault? Please Please Please let Kurt have his shot. As a real fan I’m just sickened by how quick some fans turn on a dude. Then wonder why our franchise is sooooo screwed up. Last year he walks on water and this year he’s finished and a bum. Ever heard of moderation?

  13. Don’t the wheels need to be on before they can fall off? This team was a pretender all along. Everyone but Deadskins (I refuse to call them by the “R” word) fans knew that.

  14. Big problems for Washington in the way the offensive line didn’t do anything to set up lanes for Morris to run through on Monday night.

The 49’rs killed on defensive front line play.

RG didn’t help either as his handoffs looked like they were telegraphed from the jumbo screen.

Not smooth and fluid at all.

  15. Griffin is in his second NFL season and is coming off reconstructive knee surgery.

Are the people commenting that “he’s got to go”, serious?

  16. “Of course, it’s possible that the Redskins’ character isn’t being built up, but revealed. They’re a flawed football team on both sides of the ball, and the constant tension that revolves around their quarterback doesn’t seem to be doing anything but growing.”

The coaches’ character has rubbed off on the team.

  17. Mike Shanahan is not a player’s coach; he’s a coach’s coach. Meaning he values his system and his way of doing things more than he values the talent of the players he puts on the field. For example the guaranty he gave for John Beck is and Rexx Grossman, system guys.

  18. It may seem that way but hey, take a look at maybe some other reasons why.

    1. salary cap penalty made it impossible not only to give players raises from last year for a great job winning the division but most to all players took serious pay cuts, Result: next year they will have an in-excess of $18 million dollars to upgrade the OL, DL, S, ST.

    2. Offensive Line is the lightest in the NFL. All Defensive lineman facing them are bigger and no wonder RG3 is getting hit so often. Result: spend some money and get some bigger faster playes to play zone offense

    3. RG3 had no offseason training camp and OTA’s. He spent all that time rehabbing. It takes serious time to recover from a serious injury like a torn ACL.

4.As it is due to The Players Union, practice hitting and tackling time has decreased considerably and these players need more practice and play time to make them stronger and thus avoid injuries. Redskins and all players need more playing time.

When you have the aforementioned issues those are huge obstacles to compete on an even playing field.

Actually that’s horrible news for the Eagles. Cowboys have the same record as the Eagles but are undefeated in the division. We need the Redskins to wake the hell up at least for week 16 and give the Cowboys and L.

If they dont, looking at the cakewalk that is the Cowboys remaining schedule and the challenging competition the Eagles face, its gonna be a tough road to the playoffs for the Philly.

I don’t want to root for losses, I want to win out and be a legitimate contender. Either way, it’s been a successful 1st season for Chip Kelly. The culture has changed for Philly which is more than I can say for the deadskins!

  21. I’m sorry but you’re all wrong.

The Redskins are hamstrung by several things, turning this season into a snowball of disaster.

32million cap penalty to ruin Special Teams and depth? Check

A young quarterback coming off of a serious injury? Check

Injuries in almost every position? Check

Flurry of allegations , distractions and speculation from the media? Check

I think i covered everything. Plus to throw in my opinion Mike Shannahan should stay, and his son Kyle should hit the road.. his play calling can be awful.

  23. @mikeyfull

lol please. I’m sure you watched the Skins Eagles game. They showed the graphic right there.

A 32million cap penalty would remove half of the Eagles starting offense. Leaving McCoy, Jackson, and several linemen.

Now please, do me a favor and fade back into obscurity like a good little Eagles fan.
