Linebacker Josh McNary got a late start to training camp this summer because he had to wrap up his service in the United States Army, but the Colts saw enough of what they liked that McNary earned a spot on their practice squad.

McNary, who graduated from West Point, has continued to impress the team and got promoted to the active roster on Tuesday as a result. McNary is the only player in Army history with multiple double-digit sack seasons and finished his collegiate career as the school’s career and single season sack leader.

Colts owner Jim Irsay took to Twitter on Tuesday to warn that he “didn’t break the bank, millions cash over cap/Load Brinks Truck, only to be hijacked n stormed on the way 2 stadium by machine gun MANIACS!” Having a soldier on board isn’t a bad way to keep that from happening.

McNary was the only player added to the 53-man roster on Tuesday, but a few other players were removed. Tight end Justice Cunningham and wide receiver/kick returner David Reed were released while safety Delano Howell was placed on injured reserve. Cunningham, a seventh-round pick this year, could be headed back to the practice squad after last week’s promotion if he clears waivers.
