No turkey or ham for Cam Newton on Thursday

Cam Newton, Cameron Wake AP

As it turns out, eating the Dolphins for lunch in the fourth quarter was nothing new for Cam Newton.

The Panthers quarterback has actually gone pescatarian, eating just fish for the last eight months.

Newton said he gave up meat — even when eating at the Waffle House — in March, as part of a plan to sacrifice something for the coming season.

“I try to challenge myself off the field or out of training to test my discipline — each and every month, from not eating solid food throughout the week to not eating bread or only eating water,” he said, via David Newton of ESPN.com. “Ever since I gave up the meat, . . . I like it. I like the way I was feeling. I stuck with it ever since.”

That’s going to be a challenge this week at Thanksgiving, but Newton said the bigger challenge might be for the cooks.

“It’s going to be kind of weird not eating the ham, the turkey, the chicken or what have you,” Newton said. “It’s kind of challenging my parents and my grandmother to think outside the box to try to incorporate fish.”

At this point, he has to keep it up no matter how hard it is. The Panthers have won seven straight, including three fourth-quarter comebacks, with the last two hitting in the last minute.

No amount of turkey is worth messing with that kind of streak.

“Eating water”… is that a typo or is that his actual quote?

Super Cam has meat as his crytonite!

  3. nvandy42 says: Nov 26, 2013 2:41 PM

Even though a dolphin is a mammal, not a fish…

    “…only eating water…”?

Don’t they need to keep to a pretty heavy calorific intake?

  5. loyalraven says: Nov 26, 2013 2:44 PM

    Fish isn’t a meat it’s a vegetable

  6. goon698 says: Nov 26, 2013 2:44 PM

You can tell that all is good in Panther Land right now. The biggest concern is whether Cam Newton can restrain himself from eating any meat. RG3 wishes his life was as drama free at the moment.

    He’ll especially miss chicken

  9. westcoastchowd says: Nov 26, 2013 2:47 PM

I wonder if he “eats” his water with a fork or a spoon.

  10. thestrategyexpert says: Nov 26, 2013 2:48 PM

He should create his own recipe for a Fig Newton treat. And let them sell it. It would be a great reception.

  12. dbones750 says: Nov 26, 2013 2:50 PM

Maybe it is true. Maybe you can put whatever you want in your mouth…..as long as you’re winning.

Maybe he’s onto something……..as I’ve been drinking my water all these years with varied results at best.

A 245 lbs vegetarian? I’d love to know how this dude is getting enough protein.

Give his size, he needs about 160-190 g of Protein a day. That’s a whole lot of tilapia I guess.

    “Only eating water”

What was his wonderlic score again? Maybe those things are relevant…

  18. rexgrossman8 says: Nov 26, 2013 2:56 PM

Fish is a meat and one cannot eat water. Truth.

  19. steelerben says: Nov 26, 2013 2:57 PM

While it is funny to talk about the eating of a diet of fish as being something to stick to superstitiously because of the winning streak, you can’t help but wonder if the combination of lean proteins, decrease in hormones found in most livestock, and increase in Omega-3 fatty acids might actually be playing a role in the streak. If it is doing nothing more than changing the mindset and chemical balance of Newton giving him better rest and therefore a more even keel and increased reaction and thinking speeds, then it would be an enormous help for a quarterback that while always physically gifted has consistantly been questioned when it comes to the attitude and mental side of the game.

Eating water? Either that is a bad typo or Cam is just not that bright.

Pretty sure they advise you only to eat seafood a few times a week. No nutritionist, that’s for sure, but Im going to go out on a limb and say a grilled chicken breast and some ground turkey here or there will be just fine for Cam and wont slow him down at all. But hey, whatever floats your boat.

  31. qdog112 says: Nov 26, 2013 3:26 PM

Happy Thanksgiving all you Cam haters. Cam told me to tell you to choke on your turkey and his team’s record.

No mention of Cam Newton’s foundation hosting a thanksgiving event to help feed indigent families?

  35. dexterismyhero says: Nov 26, 2013 3:32 PM

I bet he meant eating ice…….smh

  36. greenisgold1265 says: Nov 26, 2013 3:33 PM

I RED FLAG any explosive/power athlete who starts talking about vegetarianism.

Normally…. when athletes start talking this way… it is to justify their doping (dropping fat/gaining muscle/more explosive/etc.).

  45. t8ertot says: Nov 26, 2013 4:53 PM

    You don’t “eat” water, Cam.

  46. bannedfromchoirpractice says: Nov 26, 2013 5:23 PM

Hey, if Jesus can walk on water, Cam can eat water. In fact, Cam is so good, he can eat water with chop sticks!

  47. 1ncrev says: Nov 26, 2013 6:01 PM

    Oyster Dressing; that’ll cover it.

  48. westcoastchowd says: Nov 26, 2013 6:30 PM

The Chick-fil-A mascot took Cam off his fantasy team.

  49. trevor123698 says: Nov 26, 2013 6:31 PM

he better find out that vegetarian eating habits are a fraud. Red meat is a superfood and basically nothing packs the nutritional punch of red meat. If you really want to extend your career give up gluten and eat over 1 pound of rare-medium rare red meat daily. its the only way to play 15 years

  50. CKL says: Nov 26, 2013 7:27 PM

I don’t eat red meat or pork yet I don’t expect to go to people’s houses and have them cook special for me. Why not cook up (or at least bring) your own dish and surprise your mom and grandma, Cam?

  51. thegreatgabbert says: Nov 26, 2013 9:33 PM

Someone told Newt he should follow a pescatarian diet. Well, he’s been all over Charlotte looking for pescats, but no one carries them.

  52. bannedfromchoirpractice says: Nov 26, 2013 11:07 PM

    @CKL

Right, but you are not a diva who believes the universe revolves around you. Your parents obviously instilled some manners in you. Be thankful.
