As it turns out, eating the Dolphins for lunch in the fourth quarter was nothing new for Cam Newton.
The Panthers quarterback has actually gone pescatarian, eating just fish for the last eight months.
Newton said he gave up meat — even when eating at the Waffle House — in March, as part of a plan to sacrifice something for the coming season.
“I try to challenge myself off the field or out of training to test my discipline — each and every month, from not eating solid food throughout the week to not eating bread or only eating water,” he said, via David Newton of ESPN.com. “Ever since I gave up the meat, . . . I like it. I like the way I was feeling. I stuck with it ever since.”
That’s going to be a challenge this week at Thanksgiving, but Newton said the bigger challenge might be for the cooks.
“It’s going to be kind of weird not eating the ham, the turkey, the chicken or what have you,” Newton said. “It’s kind of challenging my parents and my grandmother to think outside the box to try to incorporate fish.”
At this point, he has to keep it up no matter how hard it is. The Panthers have won seven straight, including three fourth-quarter comebacks, with the last two hitting in the last minute.
No amount of turkey is worth messing with that kind of streak.
