Packers’ Mike Daniels: We need to punch people in their throats

AP

After giving up 561 yards to the Lions on Thursday, the Packers’ defense knows it needs to get tougher.

Green Bay defensive end Mike Daniels wants to get much tougher.

We need to choke people, punch them in their throat,” Daniels told the Green Bay Press-Gazette.

Daniels said Lions linebacker DeAndre Levy, who was flagged for a hit on a defenseless receiver, showed the kind of toughness that the Packers need to show.

“I mean, that guy got a helmet-to-helmet on us, you know what, but he was trying to send a message,” Daniels said. “Every now and then, you’ve got to do that. I’m not condoning illegal hits, but we’ve got to punch somebody in their throat for once.”

Well, it’s good that Daniels isn’t condoning illegal hits while he advocates choking opponents and punching them in their throats, but the league office would probably disagree with Daniels that punching somebody in the throat is the right way to play defense.

Still, it’s interesting that just days after Daniels’s teammate, Josh Sitton, complained that the Lions are dirty, Daniels suggested that the Packers need to be more like the Lions.

“They just played a better game than us,” Daniels said. “But, like I said, we need to get more violent. I think we’ve lost some of that violence. Somewhere down the line, we’ve just got to get it done.”

The Packers’ defense does need to get it done, but getting it done with form tackling would probably be better than throat punching.

  1. Boy, that will really help you win a game. Dude, you’re an idiot just like your fans. What a hapless, tasteless team. Haven’t won a game in 5 straight weeks. Joke of the NFL.

  2. I think we all know he’s being tongue-in-cheek about punching guys in the throat. I think he’s well aware(hopefully) that the most likely outcome there is an ejection and a suspension

  3. So instead of giving up those 10 yard runs to RBs, just get a 15 yard personal foul penalty tacked on to the end of the run.

Mike Daniels is a terrible speaker. Listening to him on the radio every Tuesday is awful. “You know, you know, I mean, yeah…” He’s an okay player. Just never get a job in the booth.

  4. Or…and this is just a suggestion…you could disrupt the offensive pocket (as they did) and tackle prior to 5 yards being gained per rush.

    Again, just a suggestion.

  5. Yeah, if Suh gets fined for making the throat cutting gesture, you might want to stay away from announcing your intent to go for the throat. By the way, Levy barely hit the helmet and rarely ever draws any penalties…not exactly our “bad boy”

  6. The Packer team and Coaching staff have shown there weakness this year. They don’t know how to play the game without Aaron Rodgers. Maybe if Mike Daniels and the rest of the team would Tackle, Block, Run, Catch, and throw the ball properly, they wouldn’t have to punch people to win.

Please tell me all about “your damn luck”.

  7. After all the Packer’s fan smack talk, this has been a
gratifying 5 weeks for this Vikings fan. On display for the entire world to see is the fact that the Packers are, and have been for years, simply one inactive player away from selecting #1 in the following year’s NFL draft.

  8. Most of the posters on here can recognize the symbolism that Daniels is using and see it as an urgent request to toughen up on defense. Simpletons are taking his words literally and trying to make something of it. The Packers have displayed a soft defense this year and it has not helped a team without a QB.

  9. “Punch people in their throats”? Clearly the media should make him out to be a villain an put pressure on the rich white liberal owner of his team to suspend him indefinitely for conduct detrimental to the team.

  10. You people would be freaking out, losing your minds if Suh said this. Some of your heads would actually explode you would be so filled with rage. The league would probably fine him $30,000.
It’s ok though were used to being held to a different standard here in Detroit. You can have your anger and bias and we’ll take our division lead.

  11. Look…

Its just an expression….hell, I’m 40 and we used to hear that all the time. Same as “punch them in the mouth”.

Why did we all get so literal all of a sudden ?

Nobody ever punches, throats or mouths… Its just a worn out expression about getting tougher and more physical.

Its football speak for ” we are soft right now ”

The fact that its given sensationalized headlines shows how instant media etc, can really be bothersome.

  12. Why would anyone think he is being literal? He’s just figuratively saying that the Pack D needs to toughen up and start taking control. I can honestly say that I have never seen them play this bad before. We have so many injuries but that can’t be an excuse. This season has to be finished strong!

  13. the best part of Thursday’s game is that because the Lions won their superbowl game, Jim Schwartz bought himself a few years.
thats great news for the rest of the NFC North.

  14. I agree with him whole-heartedly. There are many effective methods we use in Wisconsin to fulfill our needs. I have a morbid curiosity about this subject. I’ll bet he feels tingly all over just talking about it.

  15. Wow, people.

I’m surprised y’all don’t want Gregg Williams in jail for trying to decapitate people on the field.

Daniels means the team has to be tougher. And he’s right.

Stop making drama for your own amusement.

  16. Why did we all get so literal all of a sudden ?

Ever since the editor of this site became an agenda driven liberal looking for full time employment within mainstream media.

    Enjoy

  17. How about just playing a little better? Just because others assault opponents doesn’t mean you have to stoop to their level.

  18. So where is the Packers troll who is always talking about tasteless and hapless?

This past game had nothing to do with aggression. It just showed how important (and how great) Rodgers is. He not only makes the whole offense work, he covers up holes in that gaping D by keeping them off the field and keeping them fresh. Green Bay is truly a team of nothings without their QB, which goes to show how great Rodgers is.

  19. and Suh gets fined for Daniels statement…didn’t Matthews also say he was going hurt Kaepernick and actually try? Love the double standards…hey is Williams getting a suspension for pushing the ref and/or kicking Reiff?

  20. Levy didn’t hit a defenseless receiver helmet to helmet. The receiver became a runner as soon as he took two steps. It actually could have cost the Lions if Green Bay could put together any kind of offense. The message was sent well before the hit, in the first quarter, when the Lions were determined to stop the run on defense, and enforce the run on offense.

  21. Oops. Goodell is going to have a one-on-one with him, over milk and cookies, and possibly a time out if he does not behave.

  22. How about everyone on the Packer team zip it until they win a game?

All this talking about what they should do, gonna do or tough guy smack, they need to go back and look at the tape and then come out and prove they belong in the NFL. Until then, talk is cheap. Don’t believe, just ask all the Viking fans claiming a spot in the Superbowl all spring long.

Really? Because the last I checked we were leading the division. In a logical world that would be bad news for the rest of the division but I guess not in your world. Have a great day and enjoy watching the Lions win the NFC North.

  24. So what you’re saying is you need a few dirtbag plays to announce that you actually are a real NFL defense. Should make sure Sitton is OK with it first, though.

  25. Tyler Dunne tweeted out a picture of McCarthy running throat punching drills this week in practice.

This team is about to make a serious run at the wildcard.

  26. No. 1 it starts at the top, Dum capers doesn’t put the guys in the right spot…no one covers like woodson used to, Williams just holds and shields try’s to get in the way to stop the pass…b.j. just stands there, no pass rush….New coaching is needed, same crap every week…Kevin Greene needs to be in charge of the D! We need to knock those TE’s and receivers on there azz to keep the timing off….We need an animal in the middle like the late WAYNE SIMMONS!

  27. Big Mike adamantly refuted the need for the cheesy D to “Toughen Up” in the offseason.

& didn’t Jim Harbaugh cover this issue pertaining to the cheesebay in week one?
    “…bring some knuckles.”

Now, a stinky piece of limburger is trying to battle cry a lost cause.
Lolz. be more passive, embrace the suck.

  28. Packers lose an MVP and have a rough month… Could be worse. I’ve heard of a team with a healthy reigning MVP that is still in running for the 1st pick of the draft. Definition of futility.

  29. Daniels wants the Packers to change from being PeeWee Herman’s to Hulk Hogan’s…..good luck with that !!

  30. Losing brings out the worse in all of us. I guess I just wouldn’t have expected it from the Packers who once upon a time I thought was a classy organization.

    How things change.

Suh has restraint on a safety, Levy is knocking the tar out of people, the O-line is protecting Stafford, and the Lions are leading the North.

The Packers are taking 7 sacks in a game, they run for under 5o yards (well maybe that’s the same) they can’t stop the run or pass, and the quarterback is terrible.

  31. Why stop there? How about the old taint kick? Just kidding. I do enjoy watching the packers implode again. Welcome to what the nfl Is like without an nfl caliber qb. Also known as the packers in the 70s and 80s.

  32. Enjoy the opportunity if you are on here hating on the Packers. It won’t last and that flavor you have right now will be gone when Green Bay gets back to winning a lot of football games.

The Packers are like 47-17 in the 4 years prior to this one. Their future hall of fame QB goes down with an injury and they lose some games. Oh well.

Here is the harsh reality for some of you here. Green Bay might be losers right now, but your teams will continue to be bad and there is nothing you can do about it. Your happiness about the Packers losing will soon be replaced with the reality that Green Bay is still going to be in good shape while your team continues to suck.

Look at Minnesota as a prime example of an organization that just can’t get it done. High picks every year. Last year they had 3 first round picks. They are still horrible and have nothing to build on. They start from scratch every year. Chicago has been mediocre for years and loses gains as fast as they get them. Detroit is either really good, or really bad. All that while Green Bay continues to be at or near the top of the NFL every year. I can see why some of you hate Green Bay. It is the same reason fools hate the Patriots, Saints and all the other really good NFL teams.

  33. The real problum starts from the top down! The first step is admitting theirs a problem. That’s something neither Thompson or McCarthy are willing to do. Until then expect nothing to change.

  34. If Packer fans were as smart as they think they are (and as owners you would think they would be), they would perhaps come to appreciate what B. Farve did for them (even if he did only win one SB). Favre and Rodgers are both elite QB’s, who for the past 20 yrs were able to cover up the inept drafting, poor defenses and lack of a running game. Not too many teams win SB’s with just an elite QB and an otherwise lousy team. It is tough to win a SB but an elite QB like Favre, Brees, Brady, Manning and Rodgers will always keep you in the hunt and give you a chance. That is what Favre did for 18 yrs but packer fans only want to remember the losses and the failures. How quickly packer fans forgot what the 25 years before B. Favre were like and I can’t help but wonder if they will treat Rodgers the same way if he only wins one SB? Because Packer fans are small-minded with short memories, they only want to talk about Farve’s chokes, his interceptions etc. and easily forget that his NFL records (passing, TD’s, consecutive game streak, etc. etc.) are exactly what kept the Packers in the hunt year after year when he was the QB and covered up all the short-comings of the overall team. Think about it packer fans, you are experiencing the same damn thing right now!! With Rodgers the Packers are always relevant and in contention and have that chance for a SB, without him you haven’t won in 5 weeks and the same poor “team” that Favre had to deal with during his time, is now being exposed for the team they are……which is Ted Thompson’s draft expertise…..bad. Fans hated on Favre so much for what they perceived that he did to the team at the end of his career that they gladly annointed TT ( “in TT we trust”, lol) and MM was the best coach in the NFL. MM ddin’t all of a sudden forget how to coach in the last 5 wks, he’s using his true coaching skills to do the best that he can with TT’s true drafting skills. Packer fans should embrace both Favre and Rodgers for their ability to make the team, Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy look better than they are.

  35. This goes out to all of us who told those Packer fans silly enough to deny they were nothing with out Rodgers. Yup, you’re nothing and 5.

  36. It’s like a train wreck over there in GB. I personally think it’s absolutely hilarious. I hope there’s some real discord going on between Rodgers and McCarthy. See if they can turn it around when he come back. I hope not.

How about everyone on the Packer team zip it until they win a game?

Why stop at the team ? It’d be nice if the entire fanbase zipped it for once.

  38. Pretty soon Packer fans will result to talking about those numerous minor league championships pre-NFL as they always fall back on when they are afraid to deal with today’s reality. Funny how of their two modern day SB’s, they want to take credit for both (as they should) but won’t give credit to Farve for winning one of them.

  39. Off to a good start with Williams karate kicking Reiff during the game, wheres that penalty? Wait your green bay you dont do that, or run into ref’s while looking to shove a detroit player.

  40. I shouldn’t be, but I’m surprised a Packer is actually talking after that beat down. I’d save any opinions or comments until either Rodgers is back playing, or they win a single game without him.

  41. Daniels at least gives an effort, which is not really the case for some of his teammates.
Amazing that with their self-proclaimed “Great lifestyle and all sorts of entertaining choices,” there are so many Mini fans who spend their time waiting to post on Packer stories. I understand the hate for a franchise that has won seven World Championships during the time your heroes have existed and not won any. I just thought you’d be busy with ballet and theatre.
Anyway, I suppose you have the right to rip on Thompson’s drafting abilities. I mean, made the playoffs last year, signed away a starting WR from a big rival, added three first rounders, and has only two wins this year – that is an epic failur… oh wait, that’s someone else. Isn’t it?

  42. “We need to choke people, punch them in their throat,” Daniels told the Green Bay Press-Gazette.
after Thursday, I don’t know if the Packers have figured out the throat punching yet, but they NAILED the choking!!!!!

  43. I remember during bounty gate all you had to do was be heard saying “give me the money” and get suspended for 6 games. Now you can threaten people total bodily harm and nothing is done.
    What gives?

Favre played OK in the one SB he played. Rodgers was MVP in his. It doesn’t mean we don’t appreciate both, as fans. I always appreciated Favre. I just won’t place him on a pedestal over and above his teammates, as he insisted everyone do.

Well said. They may also say something like “do you really want the packers picking in the top 15 of the draft…?”

Packer fans are masters at spin. Go ahead, give them any story or topic.

Well, well. Look who the cat drug in. Contra, the biggest closet Packer fan on the web.

Oh hey, how did lacy do this week? And Matt Flynn!? I keep being reminded of how he torched the lions 2 years ago…what happened?

  47. Lions are just more physical then any team in division it was obvious on thanksgiving …people want to call it dirty when its really physical football …the way it should be played

  48. The Packers deserve every bit of the grief they are receiving from all directions. But I find it ironic that no matter how thick it gets from Viking “fans,” the Packers, with a 4th string street-signed QB, is STILL better than their team…….despite the consecutive losses! A 4th string QB that led a bunch of unfamiliar guys back from a 16-point deficit in less than one-half of play to salvage a tie ( and should have won.) Some Viking dope on this site keeps proclaiming “checkmate,” as though some great victory by the Vikings occurred somewhere. Is it the race to the bottom of the division? Is that what he is claiming victory of? Have at it.

  49. As bad as it is for the Packers, it’s worse for the Vikings. Every insult can be reversed onto the Viking sender. Every one. I can smile at that fact and I can sleep at night. The Packer-hating Viking fans want so much to be more than us, and they can’t even get that right when it is handed to them on a silver platter. Talk about poor timing. I’ve heard “Now you know what it ‘s like to be a Viking fan.” Nope. I don’t. It’s obviously worse. How does that taste?

Keep trying but not as hard next time.

  51. You gotta respect the diehard packer fans never ending resolve to try to down grade the Vikings while their team has finally been exposed for being nothing without Rodgers. Keep embarrassing yourselves as much as your front office has the last month for building a team of nothings around Rodgers. Ha! Pack. Ha! We told you so.

  52. The Packers have a lot of talent that is not hitting on ANY cylinders at the moment. It’s not like they have been playing with a blank stare on their faces for the last three years. Rodgers is the engine. When he comes back, we’ll get it back.

This reminds me of the time I must have gone 8-for-10 in three point shots in a city league basketball championship many years ago. We beat a very good local police department team. Afterwards, the losing team was giving me crap for not driving to the basket…..at all. “All you can do is shoot threes,” they said. I just shook my head. We won by double digits.

“That’s all we needed,” I replied, as I pointed at the scoreboard.

We need Rodgers, I have no problem admitting that.

And I’m glad we’re not the Vikings. At least we have hope.

  53. What does he want Green Bay to be, the dirtiest team in the league? Yeah punching people in their throats or choking people will get you ejected and suspended. Why not just try to play clean football? Oh that’s right, they’ve lost how many games in a row so now they have to play dirty to try to win.

  54. Without Brett Favre, and pulling a lucky on Aaron Rogers. Nobody knows Ted Thompson or any of the crap coaches that have permeated the league from Green Bay.

Ted Thompson lives on the two QB’s and sucks beyond that…the coaches there are just crap with a good QB.

Aaron Rogers should run for President for succeeding around that load of crap organization.

Hey, old rings are better than none. The ring is the thing and the Packers still have 13, the most of any team.

  56. Ya people like Shields, Burnett, Williams need to take there 5’10 frames and start smacking around those 6’6 receivers they come up against all the time. Those big fat slobs in the middle of the dline need to push back that pile and send a message once they get off their faces in the dirt.

This team is soft for one reason: Ted T drafting 6,7 round picks from schools no one ever heard of, who are smallish, slow of foot, and injury prone. Ya those guys can send a message to all those first round div I players out there.

  57. I’d stop talking about 13 rings because they don’t change the trash team that’s out there today

  58. The Packers deserve all of the scorn put upon them, by their own fans. The Packers are going through a phase. The Vikings are embracing the suck. There’s a difference.

All the trash talk coming from the Viking “fans” cannot camouflage the fact that their team is STILL worse than ours….even after spotting them a game with a 4th string QB. They didn’t want it. They prefer to embrace the suck.

    Good luck with that.
