Chiefs rally falls short, Broncos improve to 10-2

a63c2619c8f71fb94afae97a5688ddd3 AP

Broncos running back Knowshon Moreno was in tears before it started, but the Chiefs were the ones needing a handkerchief when Sunday’s game came to an end.

The Broncos rallied back from a 21-7 deficit with 28 straight points and then held off a late charge by the Chiefs that fell short when Broncos safety Mike Adams broke up a pass for Dwayne Bowe on fourth down with just under two minutes to play. The win means the Broncos will be 10-2 and in sole possession of first place in the AFC West when John Fox returns to work on Monday.

He’ll find an offense that operated in fine fashion in the second half when he gets there. Peyton Manning led the Broncos on touchdown drives of 80, 92 and 95 yards as the Broncos pulled past the Chiefs into the lead, erasing any suggestion that an improved Chiefs pass rush might knock him off his game. He finished the day 22-of-35 for 403 yards and five touchdowns, impressive totals given an erratic first half for Manning.

It’s the second straight week that the Chiefs have been shredded by an opposing quarterback, which is troubling because the team stopped getting sacks even before Justin Houston got hurt. The Broncos picked on cornerback Marcus Cooper all day and both Montee Ball and Knowshon Moreno busted some big gains against a defense that couldn’t stop everything at once. And couldn’t stop Eric Decker at all. Decker had eight catches for 174 yards and four touchdowns, busting coverages deep several times for big plays.

Those defensive struggles obscure how good the Chiefs offense has been the last two weeks, even with receivers dropping several passes Sunday, which is understandable given the way they opened the season. Winning shootouts isn’t how this team started the season 9-0 and it won’t be their most promising path to success in the future.

If the Chiefs didn’t have that KC BBQ party before the game, maybe they would have caught some of those footballs.

This losing streak has hit the Chiefs harder than Andy Reid hits local buffets

  3. jakec4 says: Dec 1, 2013 8:02 PM

I thought that Alex Smith played the best game I’ve seen him play. He rose to the occasion and went step for step with Manning pretty much. The only difference was that the Broncos receivers can catch the ball.

I don’t get why the Chiefs mascot is a mouse.

Never mind the haters, honest chefs fan could see this skid coming. There are probably two more losses on this schedule before all is said and done. Defense is tired and being carved up, offense is predictable and has no real teeth when playing from behind. Hello wild card road game, hello one and done.

  8. cursedvikings1998 says: Dec 1, 2013 8:13 PM

So now Chiefs fans are understanding why Eagles fans were so anxious to ride him out of town. He is very solid, reliable, and workmanlike, but he has no guts and no imagination. He will lead the Chiefs to a winning season every year, but they will never sniff a Super Bowl under his leadership.

Look at that critical juncture in the third quarter when the Chiefs were trailing by a touchdown, had 4th down and 2 in the Broncos territory. Reid chooses to punt.

    And there you go.

  9. strokinmyego says: Dec 1, 2013 8:14 PM

Marcus Cooper is really bad. Decker got shut down by Logan Ryan last week and he torched Cooper this entire game.

I think the Chiefs have a really good chance of seeing Denver a third time in January. While it’s hard to beat a team three times in one season it’s not like the matchup disadvantages for the Chiefs are going to just miraculously disappear.

  10. mizzousooner says: Dec 1, 2013 8:14 PM

I told my son when it happened that the pick on the opening drive when we had a first and goal from the two, would come back to haunt us.

Also, I don’t care if I ever see Donnie Avery in a Chiefs uniform again. Dude has hands of stone.

  11. 1rockyracoon says: Dec 1, 2013 8:15 PM

Neither team is going to the Super Bowl (KC is coming back to Earth and they won’t be facing backups in the playoffs and Denver’s defense is weak and then there’s Manning’s issues in the post season), but their last 2 games against each other were fantastic.

  12. nfl4days says: Dec 1, 2013 8:15 PM

The Chiefs need three things: 1. Receivers 2. DBs 3. More consistent TE.

  13. jjackwagon says: Dec 1, 2013 8:16 PM

Hey, I’m right here. Chiefs receivers couldn’t catch today. Big game jitters? I don’t know, but they weren’t up to the task. You can’t play like that and win, especially against a team like the Broncos. Chiefs made a game of it but fell short. Good win for the Broncos. You have proven to be the best team in the division.
Honestly I don’t see any more chances for a loss on the Denver schedule. Chiefs probably go 2-2 the rest of the way. Still not bad for a team that was 2-14 last year.

  14. groleo45 says: Dec 1, 2013 8:17 PM

    Denver’s newest super-hero: Donnie Stone-Fist Avery.

  15. taintedsaints2009 says: Dec 1, 2013 8:19 PM

The chiefs lost because of Cooper. The Broncos won because of Cooper. No offense to Decker, but he just happened to be the lucky guy Cooper was assigned to cover. I’ve never seen a cornerback get embarrassed by a quarterback like that. ever. you could see every play manning was looking to see where cooper was, and that’s where manning threw the ball.

That’s funny. I don’t have anything for or against the Chiefs, but their losing had more to do with guys named Avery and Cooper more than Reid. That’s just me though.

Gotta admit, the inspirational Chiefs were almost impressive at home against Denver’s 4th team secondary and scout team D-line.

who they losing to next week?

    Holy NO DEFENSE Bronco’s…

Sure there have been injuries, but it was almost non-existent.

I saw nothing to convince me otherwise to what I already knew before the game started… The Chiefs are a good team and Broncos a really good team, but they both won’t last long in the postseason. We’ve seen this before with Peyton and we’ll see it again. One and done.

  21. elwayisgod says: Dec 1, 2013 8:32 PM

Chiefs haven’t won a playoff game since 1993.

    Try harder next time.

  26. atwatercrushesokoye says: Dec 1, 2013 8:49 PM

jbaxt: you are familiar with the fact that when a team goes 2-14 that record doesn’t follow them the next year unless they earn it again? They’re 2-0 this year against the 9-3 Chefs and it doesn’t matter how many yards they gave up, they got the W.

I doubt the thief had a ticket to the game.

    Big Bronco fan here…

Congrats to the Chiefs for making both meetings very tough this year. To all my fellow Denverites talking trash; am I the only one who thinks the Chiefs will be a beast in another season or two?

Yes, the Chiefs are settling back to earth as things go down the stretch, but give these guys a few more key pieces in the off-season and they’re going to be pretty damn good.

Don’t know what we’re going to look like in two more seasons after Peyton packs his bags, but it might not be pretty (Cmon Brock, prove me wrong baby!). Be humble while winning and let’s all enjoy the ride.

  53. dallascowboysdishingthereal says: Dec 1, 2013 9:50 PM

Chiefs receivers dropped a lot of passes. Can’t afford to do that and have a chance to win playing the Broncos.

Broncos are getting in good position for the post season but I still think they will blow it in the post season.

  54. mightymorgan18 says: Dec 1, 2013 9:51 PM

I’m a Broncos fan and the end of the game was pretty exciting (made me nervous). I thought KC was going to push the game into overtime. What is up with the Denver defense? There is no way we survive in the postseason if we continually put up performances like that. Good job to both teams, but Cooper was the difference in that game.

  55. mightymorgan18 says: Dec 1, 2013 9:52 PM

It was in the 40s in KC…is that cold enough to prove all the “can’t play in cold weather” mongers wrong? Does anyone remember the Colts vs. Chiefs playoff game in KC when basically no team punted the ball? Manning was lights out that game and it was freezing.

Before the last game was over all collinsworth could talk about was how great the chiefs were gonna be at arrowhead. Your team got owned. Your overrated team got OWNED. TWICE.

  58. justamoguy says: Dec 1, 2013 10:13 PM

I love hearing the easiest schedule and back up QB excuses for winning.

First off, any person that has a clue about how the NFL is ran knows that teams from the same division play the same 11 teams with the only difference being 2 teams. Plus in a given year you play 13 different teams, that is over 1/3 of the league. So they can not all be easy games.

Two lose of the three being to arguably the best team in the NFL, is not reason to panic.

Hopefully we will get our revenge when we play for a third time this year. :)

As for you Sullijo, 14 post in less then an hour. 8 of those in a 13 minutes period. Dude this must have been the best think to happen to you all year. I think I will just leave you be, I would hate to take away from what seems to be one bright spot in your life.

I will have to admit I am a little less inclined to think the Chiefs will take it all…….still possible. :)

But I will say this much, this year is not going to be an aberration. Kansas City will be threatening to be in it every year for awhile. Imagine if we actually had some good receivers. If Avery and Bowe were making catches like Decker and Thomas…….OMG, we win this game easy. But we do not have them, so being as this is a team sport…….

    As for the post season………
    KC over Indy
    Ravens over Cincy

Patriots over KC (Really hate to say this, but until proven wrong, Brady is the Man)
    Broncos over Ravens

    Patriots over Broncos

    BUT……if KC has a good game against the Pats…….ROUND 3 :)

So what you’re saying is the Denver Broncos have better players than the Kansas City Chiefs. You don’t say! Yeah I agree – THAT is certainly the difference. Enjoy Chiefs fans. All that garbage you spewed about how great your D is blah blah blah. I hope you have nightmares the rest of the yr getting shredded in your own stadium.

  63. justamoguy says: Dec 1, 2013 11:23 PM

rckymtnthndr17, Actually the all time record is
52-56 in favor of the Chiefs, however you are right, as of late Denver has been the better team.

But like I said earlier tonight, I think that streak will end soon. KC is on the upswing and Denver is on borrowed time. I am not making excuses, hats off to Elway (Horse Face Sr.) for bringing in Manning (Horse Face Jr.). That is what you are suppose to do, bring in the players that will help you win. Heck Poli tried his best to bring Manning to KC.

But, when Manning retires and all the players that signed up for his farewell tour at a the “I want to win a Superbowl before I retire” discount rate, retire with him, then what? Maybe Oswieler is the answer, maybe not.

KC on the other hand is young, and just getting started.

I do know one thing, I am sure some Denver fans are looking forward to the day that they become the Denver Broncos again, and no longer Tim Tebow and the Broncos, or Peyton Manning and the Broncos.

I remember how sick of hearing I was of, “I am not so much a fan of the Chiefs as I am a fan of Joe Montana.” I absolutely loved having the man in Kansas City, and was sad he retired, but football is a team sport.

Let me know if I am wrong here, but wasn’t KC’s defense hyped as the best in the world 4 weeks ago? I was just wondering, because if Alex Smith torched Denver’s defense twice, what do you call what Peyton Manning did to KC’s defense? What matters is which defense shows up to play in the post season, just like when the Colt’s won the SB with Manning, who apparently you can’t win a SB with. Nice try, humbled idiot!!!
