Eagles hold on late, beat Cardinals 24-21

4d2caf29cf4c9602654a5b7447ef4780 AP

Or perhaps that headline should read “Cardinals hold on late, lose to Eagles 24-21.”

Either way, the emphasis is on hold. The Cardinals were flagged for defensive holding twice in the fourth quarter, wiping out a Patrick Peterson interception and giving the Eagles a vital first down with less than two minutes to go in the game. Those two calls were sandwiched around a fourth down incompletion by Carson Palmer, whose throw to Michael Floyd fell incomplete thanks to some coverage by Bradley Fletcher that had the Cardinals looking for a flag.

It didn’t come and Arizona’s bid for a Wild Card berth took a blow. While the penalties were a tough break, they helped make their bed with three Carson Palmer turnovers and five Eagles sacks that kept the offense from putting more points on the board. That could leave them a game back of the 49ers if San Francisco beats the Rams on Sunday.

The Eagles, on the other hand, drew even with the Cowboys at 7-5 with the win. Dallas owns the tiebreaker at the moment, but the two teams will meet again in Week 17 so they’re alive as long as they keep winning. Nick Foles narrowly avoided that first interception of the season and threw three more touchdown passes against the best defense he’s faced in his run as a starter, which more than makes up for some erratic moments. He spread the ball around, with five receivers catching at least three passes, and stood in against a pass rush that dropped him five times.

More of that in the next three weeks and that finale with the Cowboys should be a pretty meaningful one.

Horrific officiating on both sides (gotta admitthe Eagles got more calls than the Cards). Hate to see bad calls have such an impact on a game…

Nick Foles was a surgical genius. Card fans, if there is any, don’t go home mad just go home. Lol 2 more touchdowns and Nick Foles holds the record for most touchdowns with 21 and 0 interceptions. E A G L E S!!!

What a shameful display of officiating in the 4th quarter of this game.

Floyd is a really good looking rookie. I haven’t watched a Cardinals game this season before today, and they look like a team that could be dangerous if they could upgrade their noodle arm QB.

  8. macjacmccoy says: Dec 1, 2013 4:37 PM

Way to tell one side of the story. The Refs let both teams play rough in coverage. There were 3 or 4 none calls on both teams and 3-4 calls that went against them. The refs called this game right down the middle and were consistent with what they deemed to be pass inference.

Anyone who sees it otherwise had a stake in having one these teams beat the other.

  9. janvanflac says: Dec 1, 2013 4:38 PM

2 nailbiters in a row, but Cards were lucky to be in it, a DJax punt return TD was called back for a BS penalty which had nothing to do with the return.

  10. whoknowsnothing says: Dec 1, 2013 4:38 PM

Great game by both teams, but I feel the referees made some bad calls at the end of the game.

  12. xavier145 says: Dec 1, 2013 4:44 PM

Eagles fan here, can’t really blame the defense as the offense went off the field quickly every time after the last touchdown. Chip’s just gotta work on his 4th Q offense, and the refs really bailed Foles out today. Still, solid win today over a highly ranked D.

Cardinals flat out got Robbed! Refs keeping Eagles alive to make the end of the season more interesting cause Dallas is in position to make that final game pointless due to the division advantage. Dallas keeps winning, they can actually bench starters for the season finale. Refs did a horrible job! Clearly a fix!

Some awful calls against the Eagles as well including getting a catch wrong on replay! How you can overturn a call with the picture in front of you I have no idea.

  22. drs76109 says: Dec 1, 2013 5:02 PM

I am an Eagles fan. Surprised as I am about this team this year, I am concerned about how they seem to lay back in the second half with leads. They have to do something about that. But there is an odd resiliency to this team.

Don’t think they’d go far, if they make the tournament, but if they do, I really Think Chip Kelly should get coach of the year (though his predecessor is doing pretty well…).

I went to Temple so I was a bit conflicted about this game. Wanted the Eagles to win but respect Bruce Arians and Todd Bowles (the latter of whom should have been named Temple’s head coach last year. )

  23. tory707 says: Dec 1, 2013 5:03 PM

Is it amazing that while two dopes from the skins and steelers (two of the worst teams in the NFL) would come on the eagles board and trash talk one of the hottest teams in the nfl. Guess they gave nothing else to do.

  24. raideralex99 says: Dec 1, 2013 5:03 PM

4 penalties in the last 4 minutes against one team in a close game is BS especially when the other team gets away with a questionable call and has zero penalties. Can you say the fix was in.

  25. cardinal11 says: Dec 1, 2013 5:04 PM

Refs decided this game. PP interception should of stood. can’t start calling something that small that’s not in the play and not call it when floyd was held on the fourth down call. COME ON REFS!

  28. eagler927 says: Dec 1, 2013 5:07 PM

If you thought this game was called down the middle your last name must be Wonder…Stevie Wonder!
Give me a break Eagles fans. Arians had to challenge two calls that were obviously blown calls…the Cason fumble and Roberts catch. I’m sure it’s just a coincidence that every close call went the Eagles way.

The Mathieu holding call, what a joke. That contact goes on every play. The hold on Shaughnessy was on a receiver who was still at the line of scrimmage. And the ref threw the flag from 15 yards away.

The Cards had 3 turnovers so they didn’t deserve to win. But don’t be so naive as to say the calls weren’t severely slanted towards Philly

  29. bigredcards says: Dec 1, 2013 5:13 PM

Im not mad about the call at the end. palmer missed a crucial third and 5. the no PI on 4th and 5 was questionable, but the hold call on mathieu was the worst call the whole game. still the cardinals turned it over 3 times one int would have been a touchdown if he them in stride.

  33. isithockeyseasonyet says: Dec 1, 2013 5:39 PM

Celek was going out for a pass and got his arm grabbed and yanked which through off the timing which is crucial in the red zone, but if you want to whine about calls, what about kendricks getting tackled as he was closing in on Palmer prior to his td pass to larry fitz? Or all the holds that were called on the eagles? The officiating was bush both ways but for all you ‘cards got screwed’ people, rewatch a few plays, far from it

  34. tarkenton2white says: Dec 1, 2013 5:39 PM

A very close game in every aspect. As usually happens in tight games, whoever wins the turnover battle wins the day. Eagles had a little more luck in that regard.

Foles is leading a charmed life, at some point I expect the floodgates to open and he will get picked at a rate similar to other starting qbs.

Forget the refs, they called ridiculous fouls on both teams that could have resulted in points either way. Call it a wash.

  39. ncmalko1 says: Dec 1, 2013 5:54 PM

Are you Cardinal fans kidding me?
    1. That was not a pass interference giving you the ball at the 1

    2. The refs throw a flag on Deseans punt return. Go watch it. The refs said the hold occured when the punted ball was in the air. So, Desean catches the ball (no flag), runs to the 50 (no flag), to the 40 (no flag), 30 (no flag), cuts against the grain at the 25 and crosses the 20 and then the flag is thrown. How about throwing the flag when the hold happened and the ball was in the air. Complain all you want but the refs STOLE a TD against us.

    3. The hold on McCoys for yard run was completely out of the play and had ZERO significance on the play. The refs made several mistakes to BOTH teams.

  40. kingdomediscipline says: Dec 1, 2013 6:08 PM

The holding call on the djax punt return td kept the cards in the game. The incomplete pass to Roberts that was overturned. The calls was bad on both sides not unusual for losing team to cry tho.

They tackled Justin Bethel, the best gunner in the NFL…they even showed it… It was an easy, easy, EASY call…

They were they home team, and got out with a win. The Cardinals did not play their best so they can’t complain about being robbed.

But please don’t be stupid and claim that Djax rd should have stood.

  45. jwilliamsspf says: Dec 1, 2013 6:25 PM

Poor officiating occurs when the calls are so inconsistent, you don’t know what is a penalty by the end of the game and what isn’t.

This game truly had awful officiating…hands down. Want proof? See the phantom honey badger holding call vs. the 4th down Floyd molestation. How is one a penalty and one isn’t? Inconsistency…that’s it. Poor officiating didn’t cost anyone the game, but it certainly helped Foles stay interception free. And without turnovers, the Eagles’ offense still looked pretty average in my opinion.

It has already been said but I’ll repeat: this team shuts down once they get comfortable and then they can’t start up again. It’s funny because it seems they seem to figure the game is over the same time I personally think they have the game in hand (at least on this and the two Washington games).

They coaching staff and the team need to work on closing games out, still though given h0w this team is playing compared to where we thought they were going to be right now, I’ll take this problem.

the officiating was terrible all day.. starting with that unsportsmanlike conduct in the first quarter against the Eagles… and it just continued throughout the game… In the end, the bad calls were even across the board… for those complaining about the calls in the 4th, go back to the PI not called in the 2nd, where Reilly was clearly interfered with and the then the play where the pass was called a completion that obviously hit the ground…

Some calls went the Cards way, some went the Eagles way… better team won.

First off the tight end left his block and was pulled all the way around stopping him from getting into his route. Yet it wasn’t a penalty if it was your team it would have been a catastrophy if it wasn’t called. Second Mathieu held the man at the line yet it wasn’t a penalty. I didn’t hear yall complaining about that unnecessary roughness call when the guy slammed your player. Yet Foles was slammed the same way the guy just couldn’t do it as hard due to the fact that Foles is a big guy. Or how about Deseans return with the sorry call that brought that back . Just take the loss if they got the ball back who would have said yall would have scored anyway.

I know there are still some people, especially in Philly, that are not sold on Nick Foles yet. I don’t know what you people need to see the guy do. He is smart and gets rid on the ball quickly. Although barely, he still has not thrown an interception. People are just waiting for him to to make a mistake, so they can say they told you so. Face it Foles haters, Chip Kelly has found his franchise qb. I think it is too early to throw around words like elite, but I think currently he is, witout a doubt, the NFC, in not NFL, MVP.

I love hearing the fans of the Eagles after this win. You all have a real sense of disconnection to the actual story of the game.

All week, people wanted to see how Kelly’s offense would do against a top tier defense. And without question, the offense looked mediocre at best. With 3 turnovers aiding the Eagles, they only managed to win by 3 points. The Eagles only put up 300 yards and were STILL out gained by Arizona’s offense who gave away 3 possessions. Eagles had less first downs than Arizona did with 3 giveaways. Have you all failed to see these stats and what they mean going forward? The offense really isn’t as good as you think it is against very good defenses.

You can’t reason with these people. They are so myopic. They think regular season wins matter more than ultimately winning a Super Bowl. That’s their M.O. when it comes to Giants fans, so you can’t expect them to realize that the Cards simply threw (literally) the game away, and then the officiating in the end sealed it. The Eagles did next to nothing in the 2nd half of that game, and they’re gloating about this gimmick offense as if they put up 550 yards.

  75. kastout11 says: Dec 2, 2013 2:46 PM

I guess Shady’s long run that was called back was a good call, or Djacks punt return was a good call, or the non call on Cox who was tackled on the first TD to Fitzgerald was the correct call. That’s 21 points the Eagles were screwed out of.

    Mr. Wright
Who’s your favorite football team? Because I think someone is a little bandwagon boy if they aren’t close to Florida! And if you are true to your statement about your world not revolving around sports, then why do you keep coming back and responding?

Reach further. Doesn’t invalidate anything I’ve said here.

Bruce Arians gave sports writers across America an easy headline for Monday morning and I’m not sure anyone took it, “great college offense beats good nfl defense”…it was laid out there and you all blew it!
