Rare Green-Ellis fumble helps Chargers cut into Cincinnati’s lead

BenJarvus Green-Ellis AP

Bengals running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis entered Sunday’s game at San Diego with three lost fumbles in 994 regular-season touches.

He added a fourth lost fumble to that rather small tally in the fourth quarter against the Chargers.

With the Bengals holding a 17-7 lead, Green-Ellis fumbled after being hit by Chargers defensive back Marcus Gilchrist, with Chargers safety Eric Weddle recovering. Weddle’s 27-yard return set up the Chargers near midfield. San Diego would capitalize with a 48-yard field goal, cutting the Bengals’ margin to 17-10 with less than five minutes left.

However, the Bengals responded with the game-clinching drive, with Green-Ellis’ bruising run on 3rd-and-4 at the San Diego 8 earning a first down and securing victory for Cincinnati.

Bad timing… but… in the end it didn’t matter… AND… in the final drive BGE got two VERY IMPORTANT TOUGH 1st downs.

BGE made up for his fumble.

    20 carries – 92 yards (4.6 yards per carry)

Perfectly place hit by Gilchrist on the full speed BGE sprinting up the middle through a one mile wide hole.

Eric Weddle handed the Bolts the game but they flubbed it. He was stellar. Too bad it was wasted.

This is why the patriots didn’t want him back. This guy is really turning into a fumble liability with the Bengals.
