Richard Sherman, cheap shot artist

Seattle Seahawks v St. Louis Rams Getty Images

Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman is better at life than Skip Bayless.  Sherman is better at delivering cheap shots, too.

In the second quarter of Sunday’s game against the Saints, Sherman knocked Saints wideout Kenny Stills off his feet at the back of the end zone at a time when Stills had no reason to expect contact.

While Stills didn’t see the hit coming (The Big Lead has the GIF), the officials saw it happening.  Sherman was flagged for unnecessary roughness.

Sherman also likely will be fined.  And he’ll likely find a way to whine and complain about it, painting himself as the victim even though he’s clearly in the wrong.

If it weren’t for Russel Wilson the seahawks would be, top to bottom, the most unlikable team.

  15. allidoiswin55 says: Dec 2, 2013 9:59 PM

Wow he hits players in play, it’s a way of setting the tone and getting in players heads. He hit him with a forearm shiver if he wanted to hurt him it would have been different.

Way to try and rile up some posters seahawks are dominating the Saints. Guess Russell Wilson can pass after all.. Keep hating it inspires ferocious play. All good defenses are considered cheap at times. It’s how the game works

Sherman, that wasn’t cool man. Hardcore Seattle fan here, but I can’t support that.

Richard Sherman is a well educated and well spoken man. Other than his appearance on First Take (which is probably the worst sports show, and he makes a very convincing argument), I have never seen him whine (if you could call his appearance on first take that) about anything. Now, you could disagree about his mouth, but he doesn’t whine. This is coming from a 49ers fan who wants to see the seahawks lose every single week, but i respect Richard Sherman both on and off the field. I hope he never quits speaking his mind, especially when articles like this seem designed to belittle his opinions.

  34. thestrategyexpert says: Dec 2, 2013 10:16 PM

Meanwhile CP looked strong enough today to make a big play. I guess Sherman wants the game to be more interesting and trying to help give the Saints a break. Let’s see how long giving opportunities to the opponent holds up. And let’s see how it contributes to that next contract amount. Play for the game or the money, but don’t play for tricks. Leave that game for Betty White. She’s better at it and she makes me laugh. You don’t.

As a 49ers fan gotta admit russell wilson is ballin and seems to be a good guy. With that said I don’t understand why the rest of the team is so freakin dirty and distasteful. They have an arrogance about them that they haven’t earned in the slightest bit. You need to actually do something in the playoffs when it matters to get my respect. That said, I will NEVER respect golden tate, sherman, or earl thomas. These are dirty little pieces of trash oozing with arrogance and are completely classless. Earl thomas thinks he god when he tackles u after an 8 yard gain on 1st down lol are you an idiot?

  47. chucknorrissinspiration says: Dec 2, 2013 10:25 PM

I used to try to put myself in Sherman’s shoes and give him the benefit of doubt, but after watching this play a few times he has shifted my thoughts of him from a player who is misunderstood trying to fight his way to the top to a player that is very much understood that is FAKE.

  72. blacknole08 says: Dec 2, 2013 11:02 PM

I’m not going to defend Sherman, but Stills was a notorious trash talker while at Oklahoma. I wonder if if something was said and Sherman didn’t want to be shown up, especially by a rookie, in a primetime Monday Night game at his place.

    Not condoning Sherman’s actions though.

  73. chipperkelly says: Dec 2, 2013 11:12 PM

Not sure who’s worse, Sherman or Tate. Tate just always has that “I’m a punk looking to start trouble” look on his face. And he’s always doing something arrogant on the field.

  74. jolink653 says: Dec 2, 2013 11:13 PM

He’s gonna pull that stuff one time and someone is gonna turn around and deck him just like Andre Johnson did to Cortland Finnegan. I understand trying to be physical with the opposing team, but to level someone when their back is turned is a real classless move. You’re out there to play the game clean and hard, not to injure someone.

  82. behaters says: Dec 3, 2013 12:30 AM

Seriously? Its football. Its a full contact sport. Richard Sherman is an awesome person and the best CB in the league. Hes not out there trying to end anybodys career. But hes a physical player and an enthusiastic player, who at the ABSOLUTE most, got a little carried away. But he doesnt deserve anything except an in game penalty.

Now, i am a big Richard Sherman fan, but i am not a Seattle fan. Even so, Every person in these comments who talked trash about Sherman OR the Seahawks, are nothing but absolute haters. Obviously jealous because Seattle is the best team in the nfl so they are obviously better then their team and Richard Sherman is an Incredibly skilled athlete and an elite football player who is the best at his position and he is confident and knows how to play the mental game and is confident enough to do it. Well, whats not to be jealous about?

  83. kimbo71006 says: Dec 3, 2013 12:31 AM

Whoa, how do you really feel about Sherman Florio…you can’t tell from your article.

    ______________________________

He’s just telling it like it is. It was a cheap shot and one of many that Seahawks players made tonight. And all endorsed by their HC.

The entire team, fans and HC suck! And the entire league knows it–there’s a reason they are not well-liked by other teams and it has nothing to do with their play. It has to do with cheap shots, dirty plays and a no-holds barred method of playing. And the worst offender…their HC.

  84. gr87ad says: Dec 3, 2013 12:45 AM

Sherman is the best cover corner in the NFL hands down… But that’s about it he is not a complete corner. Big time puss when it comes to making open field tackles all by his lonesome. He misses and can’t wrap up properly. Complete corners don’t shy away from contact when plays start and end on the ground.

  85. jayyss says: Dec 3, 2013 12:46 AM

How in the hell does anyone here say there was nothing wrong with that hit ? He hit a defensive less receiver that was nowhere near involved in the play. Sherman is a disgrace to that whole franchise I would love to see someone just lay him out one time

  86. seadawgs72 says: Dec 3, 2013 12:58 AM

    @spfootballfan

Just wanted to give dude a huge thumbs up for his comment. As a Seahawk fan i love the rivalry with the Niners. I hate seeing it cheapened by the venom that is spewed by the bottom 1% of fans that don’t accurately represent the fans of either team. Of course i totally agree with what he said about Sherman but I’m biased toward the Hawks & their roster. Mainly just didn’t want his sportsmanship to go unnoticed. There seems to be a critical lack thereof these days.

    Two things…

Richard Sherman BALLS LIKE A SAVAGE. And he can be a great dude off the field.

Only problem is he pushes the envelope with the talk.

If he just played, and chilled out with his words, and a few actions here n there… everybody would love the dude. I like him as it is now, mostly cuz of his play and intensity. He could stand to tone it down a bit though. I’m surprised none of his teammates have tried to slow him down.

  91. chawk12thman says: Dec 3, 2013 1:59 AM

I agree with you Mike…..He didn’t need to hit another player, even though it was during the play. He was away from the ball and didn’t have to block so hard. I so wonder why the player wasn’t ready as the play? I don’t agree that he should be fined, however.

Is it just me or does Seattle have a lot of bad guys on their team. Although, you cannot ignore their talent. They will be very tough to beat. They played with reserves in their secondary and still shut down Brees and that vaunted Saints offense. Jimmy Graham was a non-factor.

Not a Seahawks fan at all, but Brees was out of the pocket and the ball was in the air. That was a legal block. Just because you’re not looking doesn’t make it illegal. It wasn’t very rough, he chipped him out of the back of the end zone, thats all.

  110. beastmode5150 says: Dec 3, 2013 8:54 AM

Not the normal amount of haters tonight. Pretty disappointing showing guys, do better next time.

    Go Hawks.

Man, Godell has turned you fans into a bunch of babies. Suspend Sherman! Suspend Tomlin! Shut up, this is football a 15 yard penalty is enough.

Also, lets not forget the fact that Richard Sherman graduated with honors from high school and attended and graduated from an Ivy-League college. He does a tremendous amount of charity work for his communities and is great to his fan base. This is more than the majority of us will accomplish in our life-times so how about we applaud him for once.

    Rule 8, Section 4, Article 7 –

“…If the quarterback leaves the pocket area with the ball in his possession, the restrictions on illegal contact and an illegal cut block both end, but the restriction on defensive holding remains in effect.”

Interpretation for all you numb nuts – Once the QB leaves the pocket, receivers are considered potential blockers and can be straight up BLOCKED.

It certainly isn’t a “nice” thing to do, and defensive players don’t do it often, but it is legal. Refs occasionally get calls wrong, you know, or make bogus calls just to keep the game in check.

H.A.T.E.R.S. HAHAHAHA. Keep hating. I expect to see this hate after the “Stanford educated punk” and his boys hoist that TROPHY!!! Say what you will say but if you watch football and pay attention YOU KNOW WHAT IS GONNA HAPPEN!!!

    GO HAWKS!!

  116. sageanddynamite says: Dec 3, 2013 12:15 PM

I signed up for an account solely in hopes of shedding light on this subject , but I fear most, including Florio, is going to turn a blind eye to logic. Sherman has everybody so riled up emotionally that no one is looking at this objectively.

Sherman’s hit was illegal, only because by the time Sherman hit Stills, the ball had left Brees’ hand. His error was not paying attention to the ball the few seconds after he watched Brees leave the pocket.

He deserved the penalty, but we’re talking seconds here guys and gals. He committed to taking Stills out of the play as soon as Brees left the pocket, but Brees threw the ball in the very short time between Sherman committing and Sherman making contact.

Again, I’m not defending Sherman, for he should have done a better job of watching the ball, but if you watch the all-22, and if you were honest with yourselves, you will see that he targeting Stills only after Brees left the pocket, which is what corners are instructed to do. Corners do this all the time, including against Seattle receivers. It’s smart football; you have a much easier time guarding potential targets when they’re out of bounds or on the ground. Although I do get the impression that Sherman looks forward to those opportunities to hit a guy, there’s nothing malicious about it. It’s just good football, folks.

As soon as Brees left the pocket, Stills’ head should have been on a swivel paying attention to the D while trying to give Brees an outlet.

Now commence the downvoting. Or, read this objectively and then watch the all-22. You will find the vitriol is unfounded and unnecessary.

Met Richard Sherman this summer. The guy is truly a class act. The positive work he does in community is amazing. You guys understand he is playing football right? I don’t remember any GIFs being created when Anquan Boldin did the same thing to Sherman when he was frustrated about getting locked down. Exact same type of hit, media posts nothing.

Seattle came in this game to send a message to NO that they were the more physical team. NO broke after the 1st quarter because Seahawks were so physical. 34-7 and sitting 11-1, people can’t help but hate the guys on top. I don’t remember hate 3 years ago when we were rebuilding and 7-9. Great time to be a Hawks fan!

  118. atepper001 says: Dec 3, 2013 12:20 PM

don’t worry if he isn’t suspended or fined for the hit. i am sure he will get caught doing drugs again and this time, won’t get off on a technicality. the entire secondary of this team is scum. and no, i am not a 49er fan, i just can’t stand cheaters and dirty players.

  119. bigplay27 says: Dec 3, 2013 12:23 PM

So many uneducated football fans in these comment sections. People can continue to hate the Seahawks because we are one of the most dominate teams in the league. 99% of people would never complain if Sherman was on their team.

  120. julesee16 says: Dec 3, 2013 2:38 PM

I have been a Seahawks fan for a long, LONG time! This year is surpassing all others in terms of victories, success and domination! Richard Sherman is a very articulate, intelligent and determined man. He plays with all he’s got. I see the good he does in his community-based foundation as well as his message of rising above your circumstances to achieve your goal. I am PROUD to be a Hawks fan! The Hawks are made up of players with many different temperaments and personalities. Richard Sherman is 180 degrees in personality from Russell Wilson, but I love them both! They both contribute to the dynamic of this successful team. No excuses here for bad or selfish decisions on the part of some. But in reading down this blog, it appears there are a lot of comments from those who are having a hard time with the successful formula which is clicking on all cylinders in Seattle this season!!! As a true member of the 12th Man – I love each player on the team and support them through good times and bad. And this year, we have already had a LOT of good times!! Go Hawks!!!

I like the city of Seattle and the people. RW is a first class gentleman.

However the loudmouth cheap shot taking CB is just a very unlikable person. It’s really a shame as I did like him at one time with his big playmaking ability and bravado but he just keeps doing things that make you think he’s scum.
He’s not doing a good job being a villain as sometimes it’s cool to be the villain but he just comes off as a lowlife.

  123. jdrewsy says: Dec 3, 2013 7:14 PM

  124. jiminauburn says: Dec 3, 2013 9:00 PM

What a bunch of haters. You guys make it sound like he is making cheap shots all the time. Pushing the receiver out of bounds is perfectly legal. Maybe he pushed him when he was not looking, and maybe it was not needed, but it is not a terrible cheap shot. You make it sound like he leveled the guy with some hit while the guy was not looking. He basically gave him a shove with his arms, getting him out of bounds and out of the play.

  125. salutethis says: Dec 4, 2013 10:59 AM

That was a dirty hit… don’t call that great defense because if that hit was on golden Tate every seahawks would go nuts if there was no penalty. I get you guys are fans and that Seattle teams is a force… but they don’t need shots like this to win.

Very similar to a hit put on Sherman by Larry Fitzgerald.

Ahhh someone else is still bitter because Sherman got at Brady after the game last year.

So says a Lions fan, a franchise whose playoff appearances since the merger can be counted on one’s two hands, and whose playoff wins since the merger need only a lone finger to complete their count.

Irony at its finest, from the biggest joke of a franchise in the history of professional sports.

Can’t tell from the gif but if the QB is out of the pocket then that play is 100% legal. Morons on here just hate Sherman because he talks a lot. I’m not even a Seahawks fan but as far as I can tell they play the game the way it used to be played. Y’know, when we LOVED it? I don’t have a problem with guys talking a lot as long as they back it up, & the Seahawks absolutely back it up. He should have a chip on his shoulder, he was a 5th round pick & is at least a top 3 CB in the league. Make fun of a couple drug suspensions all you want but every team has multiple guys who have been suspended for PEDs, including my team & your team.

That hit wasn’t even a hard hit. As they say in hockey, keep your head on a swivel, especially when the QB is out of the pocket. Cause y’know, it’s football, somebody might hit you. Gasp!!

Sorry, don’t care what the rule books say…it was an intentional dirty hit mean to hurt Stills, Sherman is known as a dirty player and this just cemented that reputation.

Also, for all you people calling Sherman “classy”, “intelligent”, etc. I don’t usually use those type of adjectives to described someone who has tested positive for the use of PEDs. Considering its illegal and banned, I would use adjectives such as “stupid”, “selfish”, and my favorite “druggie.”

But then again if his fans are calling him “classy”, well then enough said…fans must be as classy as he is (insert sarcasm here).

  135. bondsncruz says: Dec 6, 2013 3:55 PM

Richard Sherman is a classless player and a reprehensible human being. That’s probably why Seahawks fans like him so much. They love their dirty coach and their arrogant show boating players who celebrate after every single play. When I watch games with my son I make sure he knows that’s NOT how you play the game. And clearly they love being the (proven) biggest cheaters in the NFL. The team may be winners in the standing, but for the most part they seem morally bankrupt as people. If karma is real, this team will be knocked out of the playoffs by a team that plays the game correctly while displaying good sportsmanship and class.

  136. julesee16 says: Dec 6, 2013 5:21 PM

Everyone has their opinion… and the right to post it. But for those of us who are TRUE fans of the Seahawks, your words may make you feel better, but do NOT change how we feel about our team. We will enjoy this ride with our beloved Hawks as far as it will take us. They are each unique individuals, just as players are on all of the other teams. The Hawks deserve this success. And it is good to see they are achieving it. 12th Man – Loud and Proud!!!

This is coming from a Washington State native. . . How come Carroll never gets blamed for the SeaPEDS actions? Everywhere Carroll has gone has been a cesspool of corruption, cheating and classlessness. And I am a PEDHawk fan? I just wish the Seadrugs would go the way of the Huskies and get rid of the scumbag coach (Sarkisian. . . another classless chimp from the Carroll ccoaching tree) and hire a standup guy like Peterson! Go Huskies! Win with class and honor.
