Another Saints game, another small earthquake in Seattle

Bennett AP

Nearly three years ago, Seahawks fans created a small earthquake while celebrating the legendary postseason touchdown run by Marshawn Lynch.  On Monday night, the needle of the seismometer was moving, again.

Via the Seattle Times, the 22-yard fumble return for a touchdown by defensive end Michael Bennett spawned Beastquake 2.0, registering in the range of one to two on the Richter scale.

Each number on the Richter scale reflects a new order of magnitude, with a 2.0 reading being 10 times stronger than a 1.0, and a 3.0 reading 10 times stronger than 2.0.

The measurement came on the same machine that recorded a small earthquake during the Lynch touchdown run.

We’ve got a feeling the needle will be moving again during the postseason, when the Seahawks likely play two games at home.

I have to admit that the Seahawks fans are the best, they are a huge difference maker.
Drew said it was the loudest place he ever played after the playoff game.
I bought a Seahawk cap, I hope they get to NYC for the SB.

    This team is ‘DEADLY’

  3. blackfootkiller says: Dec 3, 2013 9:55 AM

Saints fans were mulling around what they should nick name their awesome defense last week…
    How about ‘Hoax’?

  4. aljack88 says: Dec 3, 2013 9:57 AM

I’m not a ‘hawks fan but they certainly served notice that they are going to be very hard to beat in their house. Very impressive beat down.

After losing in Seattle, at the Jets and Pats, the Saints have to beat the Panthers in Carolina to show they are still a contender for the SB.

  5. ktm300xcwe says: Dec 3, 2013 10:01 AM

Damn good football team. Too bad free agency and the salary cap will dismantle it in 2 to 3 years like every other dominant team.

  6. MasMacho says: Dec 3, 2013 10:01 AM

Not bad for a mere 68000 people.

I wonder why Kansas City (76000), Dallas (1.9 Million), Washington (90k?), or even college stadiums (tOSU 105k, Neyland 100+) don’t cause this either.

(Hint: It’s impossible to “pump in” crowd noise at that level, it is only marginally about stadium design, or any other silly accusations that are sure to follow the comment.)

I’m sure public funding will be granted / spent trying to figure this out.

  7. azarkhan says: Dec 3, 2013 10:03 AM

There shouldn’t be any more questions about the Seahawks being the best team in the NFC and possibly the NFL.

It will be great to see this group of arrogant cheaters get bounced from the playoffs.
And to all you Hags fans who want to complain about the way your cheapshot artist corner will rightfully be portrayed in the media today: You sure didn’t seem to have a problem with it when it was Suh or any number of other players. In fact a lot of you piled on pretty hard so get ready to take your medicine.
I can’t wait until a test is developed to detect whatever steroid Sherman is on because it’s pretty obvious he’s using something that’s just a step or two ahead of what the testers can detect. The fact that he’s already failed a test and then got off on a technicality is all you really need to know about that situation.

  21. raiderlyfe510 says: Dec 3, 2013 10:44 AM

There is no way that crowd noise can generate seismic waves(earthquakes). The human voice doesn’t produce that low of frequency.. The noise would have to amplified through speakers and EQ’d to boost low frequencies that can cause any kind of waves of energy to travel through the earth layers to cause an earthquake.

    People will believe anything.

  29. gallopinggilmore says: Dec 3, 2013 11:08 AM

This game was taylormade for the Seahawks. Raining and in the 30s against a team that hates playing outside of a dome. Not to mention a 3 HOUR time zone advantage for a night game after a long trip from Atlanta- You won’t find many examples of those. It would have been 1-2am for the Saints players when that game ended.

  30. shibbyleigh says: Dec 3, 2013 11:11 AM

Thats the best I’ve seen this team look, If they manage to play like that the rest of the way then Im gonna be disappointed every sunday for the near future. Even though their record indicates they are not a bad team on the road I don’t believe their that dominant away from Seattle. Gonna be tough out but it only has to happen once in January.

That is bull and you know it. I have been to MANY games and not once did they hand out megaphones nor did I see any megaphones. Oh, wait, you must mean when the fans cup their hands around their mouths as if to simulate megaphones. We are just plain loud.

Ok smart guy..except the fact is nowhere in the article was the earthquake attributed to the crowd yelling. It was from the fans stomping their feet on the ground just like the last time it happened.

  38. raiderlyfe510 says: Dec 3, 2013 11:33 AM

If it caused an earthquake the noise was artificial. No matter how loud crowd noise is it will not produce seismic waves. Sub frequencies or low frequencies can cause it. The human voice doesn’t carry those frequencies.. It will have to be EQ’d or boosted. Only things like explosions can naturally produce the sub frequencies that can cause seismic waves.

Make any excuse you want…rationalize any way you need to…last night was a butt kicking by one professional team against another. These aren’t college kids…these are grown men with a job to do…and last night, Seattle was at the top of its form. What remains of the rest of the season – two away games – remains to be seen…but last night was a classic game.

  45. Go-Hawks! says: Dec 3, 2013 11:57 AM

    “…Artificial noise…”

First, the seismic activity is more like related to 68000 chubby football fans jumping up and down like wild cave men (meant as a compliment). These small earthquakes have very little to do with the crowd noise. It has more to do with the fact the seismometer is basically across the street from the stadium.

Second, The stadium is designed to AMPLIFY crowd noise. It is not artificial. There is no more pumped in noise coming through the speakers than at any other stadium (you know, that guy on the speakers that says “It’s 3rd down, let’s make some noise!”. And you should know that noise makers like blowhorns and whatnot are not permitted at NFL games. If security sees you with such a device they will confiscate it or make you leave.

    Go Hawks!

I’m not even a seahawks fan, but I’m thankful the only way my team (AFC) may play Seattle is in the SB, away from their stadium. That stadium is by leaps and bounds the best home-field advantage in the league.

There were multiple crowd shots of fans holding little megaphones. They don’t hand them out at every game but they absolutely did last night. At some point it stops being gamesmanship and starts being just unfair. It’s a little funny since the Saints got their Super Bowl through similar means but what happens when Seattle has to play outside their own stadium against a team like the Patriots or the Broncos? I can’t imagine they do very well. Seattle fans, you can be loud but when it starts to get physically impossible to play proper football I think it needs to be dialed back. I live in Vancouver and I’d like to see you guys do well despite Seattle not being my team, but I totally understand why people hate Seattle fans. News flash for those complaining about SOME of the fans having “megaphones”:

Did you pay attention to the KC game where they broke our previous world record for crowd noise? The Chiefs handed out megaphones to all the fans, which was clearly visible in the TV broadcast.

Seahawk fans complained that we had no team support for our first attempt, had no megaphones, nor any of the advantages used by KC. So, the team stepped up and handed out a few thousand megaphones. Doesn’t change the fact that they broke the world record using the same “means” as KC.

What you won’t see at the Clink is the decibel level splattered all over the jumbo screen like they do in KC, as if to brag about their noise level.

The record was not announced in the stadium, there was no mention of it in the stadium during the game, except a very vague “we did it” screen that lasted for about a second and didn’t really reference anything directly.

  74. slyall41 says: Dec 3, 2013 4:56 PM

Crowd noise confirms only that Seattle fans are nothing but a bunch of loud-mouth blowhards. Who need to prevent the opponent from hearing, the refs from hearing, the announcers from hearing. Why? Can’t they win a home game on their own merits?

There were no megaphones handed out at the game last night. Just a bunch of loud and rowdy Seahawks fans cheering their team to victory.

Let’s see… @Carolina, @ Houston, San Fran, @Arizona, @St. Louis, and NO. That’s a pretty fair overall schedule so far…not a bunch of patty-cakes like the Saints, Broncos, and Pats.

The road to the Super Bowl goes through Seattle!!

Russell Wilson, what a talented and CLASSY young player. MVP…MVP…MVP!!!

I really can’t believe you people can’t just admit that this is a great football team. Your always making excuses…. Enjoy the game. To those of you who say we are cheaters, watch the ’05 Superbowl… The NFL cheated in that game. GO HAWKS!

Crowd noise is part of the game… Always has been, always will be. Quit whining because your fans aren’t as good as ours. We were this loud while we were going 4-14. We’ve been this loud since our inception in the 70’s. You all hate because we aren’t fair weather fans. We’ve stood by our team through thick and thin… Mostly thin. Also any noise making device is banned in NFL stadiums, hence no vuvuzelas at NFL games. So get off your high horse and watch some history in the making. First time we’ve ever been 11-1. Let us enjoy it. Stop trying to bring us down with hate… P.S. have fun playing us in the playoffs/Superbowl. Go hawks

Hawks fans aren’t smug… We’ve been fans of a losing team for nearly 40 years… We are happy to finally be winning.

I see a lot of mention that last year they were ousted by the Falcons and being that it was an away game that we should expect the same this year…do we forget that Russel Wilson was a rookie!!!! I have seen so much more development in him in his second year along with the attitude of the defense. Look at the pressure this team sends and the third down efficiency for the defense is astonishing. No more big third down let downs. This team is focused and hungry after last year’s disappointing loss..AND…they play as a team. GO HAWKS!!!!

Carolina was and is a tough opponent, especially on their own field. I remember the haters laughing when we barely pulled it off. Carolina rolled into Candlestick and beat the 49ers at home. The Colts were pretty hot in the first part of the season so no shame in that loss. Since those games, the Seahawks have progressively gotten their groove on. We are peaking at the right time. \
    Go Hawks
