Mike Wallace: Steelers fans will “definitely” boo me on Sunday

Miami Dolphins v Houston Texans Getty Images

Dolphins receiver Mike Wallace will return to Pittsburgh, where he played the first four years of his NFL career, on Sunday. He’s not expecting a warm reception.

Asked if the crowd will boo when he takes the field on Sunday, Wallace said, “Definitely. Yeah.”

“I already know how my welcome is going to be, it’s not going to be too pretty,” Wallace said.

Wallace took issue, however, with talk that he was upset with Pittsburgh because the Steelers didn’t give him a new contract. Wallace said he’s happy where he is and not thinking about the past.

“No, that’s a lie,” Wallace said of reports that he wanted a contract extension in Pittsburgh. “Mike never said that, but it is what it is, I’m on a new team. I’m pretty sure they’re not going to like that too much, but we all have to move on, I’ve moved on.”

But apparently Wallace doesn’t think Steelers fans have moved on.

I wouldnt be surprised if Wallace has a break out game against the Steelers.

I would like to see Tomlin juke out of this topic.

Players staying with one team their entire career is rare in today’s time. Not everyone can be a Hines Ward

  3. thepftpoet says: Dec 3, 2013 7:38 PM

    Let’s be honest.

The way he drops open passes

He would get booed in Miami too.

  4. thepftpoet says: Dec 3, 2013 7:39 PM

Mike Wallace “dropped” this statement as soon as he found out he was playing the Steelers.

  5. Deb says: Dec 3, 2013 7:39 PM

Won’t be there, baby, but I’m sure I’d lose focus during the running plays and forget to boo by the time someone threw a ball to you.

    watch out for Tomlin’s foot…..

  8. blackngold4life says: Dec 3, 2013 7:51 PM

That being said..if Clark and Troy Keep playing out of position Wallace will get in the endzone.

  9. tictoccpthook says: Dec 3, 2013 7:52 PM

Wallace was a good Steeler. I wish him well as long as the Steelers win.

  10. tokyosandblaster says: Dec 3, 2013 7:53 PM

Of course they will. 2nd stupidest fan base in history, behind only Vikings fans.

  11. giahead33 says: Dec 3, 2013 7:55 PM

Wallace won’t get boo’s cuz he left the steelers, he’ll get boo’s cuz of all the big passes he dropped while he was there!!

  12. bennyb82 says: Dec 3, 2013 7:59 PM

Pittsburgh was better with Wallace on their team even if he is a one trick pony. His trick was pretty good when it worked.

  13. keiselsbeard says: Dec 3, 2013 7:59 PM

Don’t miss him a bit. Now we have Emannuel Sanders to drop passes in clutch situations, so we’re good. SMH….

  14. hometownhero44 says: Dec 3, 2013 8:05 PM

Did Wallace just refer to himself in the 3rd person?

  15. brutus9448 says: Dec 3, 2013 8:08 PM

I’m sure the steeler fans that are complaining about him now (like drops) weren’t complaining when he had his 8 TDs last year for the steelers. You wish he was still on your team. Don’t deny it.

  16. buckethead1 says: Dec 3, 2013 8:09 PM

Wallace will be presented with the Hands Of Sweed trophy ay halftime…

  17. gallopinggilmore says: Dec 3, 2013 8:10 PM

I don’t see any reason to boo him. He earned his paycheck when he was with the Steelers. Of course the price tag was a lot lower then. I’m glad they let him go when they did.

  18. citizenstrange says: Dec 3, 2013 8:14 PM

Just like Nate Washington before him Wallace kept his nose clean, did his best and was rewarded with a big contract from another team. Nothing wrong with that. He owed it to himself and his family to do what was best for him.

  19. razzol says: Dec 3, 2013 8:15 PM

I wouldnt be surprised if Wallace has a break out game against the Steelers. Everybody else has no surprise there.

  21. Stiller43 says: Dec 3, 2013 8:23 PM

He drops passed. Never made plays in big games…but absolutely worst of all, his effort was just not there. And still isnt (see cromarties pick last week).

    BOOOO

On the other hand, i’d be proud to cheer the hell outta james harrison in a couple weeks in his return.

  22. PCa Survivor says: Dec 3, 2013 8:25 PM

Look what my Google machine found (Yahoo Sports, July 28, 2012): “…the Pittsburgh Steelers gave receiver Mike Wallace a contract offer somewhere in the area of $42 million over five years. If accepted, the deal would have resolved the fact that Wallace was given a first-round restricted free-agent tender, which guarantees him just $2.72 million in the 2012 season. Wallace was evidently unimpressed, which is why he’s holding out of the Steelers’ training camp.”

Steelers fans are savvy enough to know you can’t keep everyone. When Dan Snyder came along and threw #1 money at an Antwaan Randle-El, Steeler fans help pack the moving van and wished him the best. Same with Larry Foote and William Gay.

But Steeler fans don’t take too kindly to divas who hold out in training camp, complain about not getting enough balls, makes half-hearted or no blocks, quits on routes, makes no attempt to break up an interception, and has dropped way too many catchable balls.

I’ll be at the game Sunday but I won’t waste any energy booing Mike Wallace. Typical Wallace thinking the game is about him – it isn’t.

  23. spharrgcs says: Dec 3, 2013 8:36 PM

Seriously, who gives a F about this except Wallace. Answer: Nobody.

  24. bullcharger says: Dec 3, 2013 8:49 PM

Why would Steelers fans care about him. He sucked in Pittsburgh and he still sucks. He’s just a nobody.

  25. goodellhatesfootball says: Dec 3, 2013 8:56 PM

Steeler fan here. I still wear my Mike Wallace jersey with pride. He was damn fun to watch as a Steeler and I won’t forget the contributions he made to the team. Unfortunately, he wanted big money and we couldn’t give it to him. Not to mention the fact that he’s from the south and probably prefers it down there. So I don’t blame him for leaving at all. Any Steeler fan who boos the guy is a moron. He never ripped the city or the organization and he certainly never disrespected the fanbase. You can’t blame someone for wanting to make more cash or move closer to home. All in all, we had a good run with Wallace. I wish it could have continued or that we would have won the Superbowl with him when we had the chance, but it didn’t happen and like he said it’s time to move on.

  26. contract says: Dec 3, 2013 9:10 PM

No … Steeler fans would boo if we were paying him $12,000,000 a year.

  27. steelchampions says: Dec 3, 2013 9:15 PM

He’s such a diva. He even went ‘third person’.

    {“Mike never said that, but it is what it is, I’m on a new team.}

He’s on a new team and has nothing to prove except that ‘he loves meesa-mee’ !

  29. steelcurtainn says: Dec 3, 2013 9:22 PM

No, we won’t. You decided to take the money and run and now you’ll miss out being with one of the greatest organizations in football. The Steelers!!!!! Your loss, have fun with tannehill and your soon to be downhill stats. The steelers have moved on.

    ————————————————-
I can tolerate almost anything but gutlessness–in this situation, someone who lays down on the field.

Nate Washington left the Steelers for the Titans, and I still root for Nate to do well. Always rooted for Randle El in DC, for Faneca in New York, for Vrabel in New England. And I’m still wild about James Harrison. I don’t begrudge players who leave the Steelers for greener pastures whether they choose to go or have no choice unless they bad-mouth my team after they leave.

But Mike Wallace was paid $2.7 million last season. For that, he skipped al OTAs. He refused to learn the new offense. He dropped countless passes. And when asked about his drops, he said he couldn’t concentrate on the game because his mind wandered during running plays.

He was useless when we needed him, and I don’t see that he’s been any great help to the Dolphins. He’s sure not worth what you paid for him. Antonio Brown is having a much better year. I don’t boo anyone–that’s not my style. But whether or not you choose to believe it, I’m glad he’s gone.

  31. vincentbojackson says: Dec 3, 2013 9:31 PM

I’m sure it’s been difficult for Steeler fans watching Wallace drop passes in another team’s uniform. Meanwhile they’ve had to watch Antonio Brown ascend to #2 in the NFL in receiving yards.

  32. tjacks7 says: Dec 3, 2013 9:34 PM

To be fair, Miami fans will probably boo you too. Glad you didn’t steal even more money from the Vikings this year than you did from the Dolphins!

  33. wvucolumbus says: Dec 3, 2013 9:38 PM

We are Steeler Nation. We only boo one player and he’s worthy of our “boos” and that’s Tom Brady.

Everyone else is beneath Steeler Nation. No interest in booing Wallace (who was a nice player while here). He’s not relevant.

  34. bengalskuta82 says: Dec 3, 2013 9:40 PM

Not to hurt your feelings but I think the steelers fans have moved on. Its not like you put up hof numbers there. You were just another wide receiver to them

  35. bigbabies says: Dec 3, 2013 9:41 PM

Any fans that boo him are not Steelers fans. He doesn’t deserve the effort of a boo from the Steelers fans.

Keep your respect and do not boo the “One Trick Pony”.

  36. mikejs530 says: Dec 3, 2013 9:42 PM

He’ll get booed for several reason…
#1. he was so selfish that even though he had to learn a new offense, held out in training camp last year. And he knew steelers don’t negotiate contracts if you hold out.
#2. he dropped countless number of passes last year
#3. he obviously did not go all out on several passes, easily giving up on plays without going for the ball.
#4. he purposely sat out the last game of the year so he didn’t get hurt and get his big contract.

complete selfish piece of sh*t…. glad he’s gone. Antonio brown is so much better than him anyway..

  37. abninf says: Dec 3, 2013 9:44 PM

by the way, in his first game for Miami, they won the game, and he still complained about not catching enough passes. that’s all you need to know about Mike Wallace.

  41. thinredline69 says: Dec 3, 2013 9:55 PM

Let’s compare Antonio Brown and Mike Wallace through the first 12 games of 2013:

Antonio Brown: 85 catches, 1,103 Yards, 6 TDs
Mike Wallace: 56 Catches, 743 Yards, 3 TDs

    Brown’s contract: 5 years, $42.5 million
Wallace contract: 5 years, $60 million

Fins fans care more about W’s than Boo’s. Wallace’s season isn’t all his fault for the most part. His qb has had trouble connecting with all of his recievers when he throws the long ball. I’m sure if Big Ben was throwing, Wallace’s stats would be much better. Maybe fans should stop being so negative, Wallace went were he could get the most $. Wouldn’t you do the same?

As a FINS fan I really thought the Fins had the absolute WORST fan base in the entire league. We are the only team in the NFL where the fans literally complain about everybody on the team except maybe Hartline but please don’t tell Fins fans who drafted Hartline in the 5th round when most people had him as an after thought in the draft. I have Steeler fans as friends but they are not this bitter about Wallace as some of these posters. Antonio Brown is a beast so why still complain about Wallace. Fins lost Jake Long in similar fashion but we are ok with him leaving, same thing with BMarsh. #finsUP

Maybe everyone should just lay the hell off MW. His #’s aren’t elite. He has less than half the TD’s he normally got with Ben. Tannehill is getting better by the day but he still can’t get over the mental hump with the deep throw.

Many times MW has been open after blowing by the db and has to wait for the ball every dang time. He has made great plays with YAC and has gotten the tough 1st downs. We need to give the guy a little leeway here man! Brady would have hit MW in stride all those times. I hate the pats but its true. Tanny just needs a little more time and MW needs to not worry about stupid media stuff like this story and they’ll be fine.

Geez if we would have kept Reggie and Jake…

I am pretty sure this guy will be booed. Why wouldn’t he be though? The guy left for more money. As a Cleveland fan I see this quite often. When a guy leaves a team for more money it is showing something. I am not saying he did not do anything for the steelers considering he caught a game winning superbowl win for them. However he did leave for more money so I am sure he will booed!

  57. steelersnowand4ever says: Dec 4, 2013 6:04 AM

    _________
Mike Wallace started the season out slow and no one, including Dolphins fans, are giving him a pass for that.

Tannehill also does a good job of spreading the ball around. Like Wallace, Hartline is also on pace for 1000 yards, and Charles Clay is on pace for 800 yards.

Maybe Antonio Brown is better than Mike Wallace. But it’s a small sample size. Next year with a more competent OC, Wallace’s numbers should be closer to where they should be.

And if the Steelers fans are so happy with his replacement (which is fine if they are), why are they so quick to bash Mike Wallace? He’s moved on and so should you guys. Wallace held out for a bigger contract. It happens all the time, and really, in a league where teams can cut you at any moment, it’s worth holding out at times for what can potentially be one last payday.

  64. expatpatfan says: Dec 4, 2013 8:39 AM

As much as it pains me to say nice things about either the Steelers, people here are forgetting that for a stretch, Wallace was an absolutely amazing player for Pittsburgh. In 2010, he ran deep routes 43.4% of the time and still had a catch rate above 60%. 2011 saw his deep% drop off (that’s the o-coordinator) but his catch rate remained above 60%.

Sure, these things have all dropped off and he probably isn’t worth the money he’s getting today, but if you aren’t remembering Wallace with some fondness, it’s revisionist history.

Jerricho Cotchery has caught Mike’s 8 TD’s already this year.

Except in the case of superhumans like Calvin Johnson, the quarterback makes the receiver, not the other way around.
