12th Man plans to fly a banner at Candlestick Park on Sunday

Seahawks fans have managed to buy a brick at the new 49ers Stadium.  As the Seahawks prepare to play their last game in the 49ers’ current home, the 12th Man plans to bid the venue a proper farewell.

Via CSNBayArea.com, 100 fans have pooled $1,800 to fly over Candlestick Park for 15 minutes prior to Sunday’s game a banner reading GO HAWKS-12.

The development comes at a time when the Seahawks’ intensely loyal fan base seems to be getting more active, more vocal, and more numerous.

The biggest challenge will come in February.  If/when (when) the Seahawks secure a berth in the Super Bowl, will the 12th Man make the cross-country trek to New Jersey, where just one ticket will cost more than Sunday’s banner?

  1. People will pay stupid amounts of money just to be at the Super Bowl….whether it’s the Steelers particularly, or the other 29 teams I’d much rather save $1800 and just watch the game on my big screen.

  2. They are just dropping a leaflet version of the “how to be a good fan” rules the niners sent via email to season ticket holders. Haven’t heard it? Yeah, tells them to wear red, cheer, etc. Pretty embarrassing

  3. That the Seahawks are in first place in the NFC, that they’ve beaten the 49ers handily twice in a row, and that we’re STILL in Hawks’ fans heads this bad is pretty hilarious.

I have family that lives in Seattle, and they say that the only thing sports radio in Washington state ever wants to talk about is the San Francisco 49ers. Nonstop. Can’t wait to put little brother in his place again.

  4. Seachicken fans are a bunch of tools…you will lose this Sunday and will be lucky to make it past your first playoff opponent

  5. On the 5th day of Christmas, the 12th man gave to me: onnnnnnnne giant trolling!

Niners are going down hard. The Whiner fans are still delusional like the Saints fans were. This Sunday, they’ll be forced to recognize that the Seahawks are The Truth©.

  6. The commemorative “brick” the Seahawks fans have purchased that will be installed in the new 49ers stadium ,unknown to the fans who purchased it, will be installed at the bottom of one of the hundreds of urinals at the new LEVI’S Stadium bathrooms.
Fans may line up and pay extra for the right to piss on the Seahawks brick, since the Hawks fans and several of their players seem intent in making themselves the most hated ,obnoxious fans and players in the League !!!

  7. Intensely loyal yet they were nowhere to be found until week 10 of last season. There are also pictures from just a few years ago wearing bags on their heads. IJS

  8. Oh and lets not forget we supposedly obsess over them….. Yet they are the ones doing fundraisers trying to buy bricks and flights over the stadium

  9. Let me guess what the comments will be on this post.

Seahawks fans need to be quiet until they win something. Before you whiner fans rip Hawks fans please read the rest of my post.

It’s true we’ve never won anything but when we do the die hard fans up here in the northwest will truly deserve it. Name another team that has been as bad as we have for 30 years that has this kind of fan base. We’ve been loud and proud the whole time but no one ever noticed. At least we don’t have to have the team send out a memo on how to act at the game like the niners did. Here are a couple examples that were in the memo.

Step 1- Dress the part. Wear your favorite niner gear to the game. Put your loyalty on display. Wear Red!!!……… Really??? You may have 4 super bowls but that is sad. You cant even walk down the street in Seattle without seeing hawks gear everywhere and you have to be reminded to wear it to the game????

Step 2- BE on time. WE need our fans to be there to give support to our niners when they are introduced………… WOW!!! Not only are the hawks there for the intro but we have to be kicked out of the stadium after the game . We also have about 2000 fans waiting at the airport after road games.

STep 3- Basically step 3 says to be quiet while the niners are on offense and loud when theyre on defense and goes on to explain why. For a franchise like SF I can’t believe this has to be explained. It also goes on to say there is a fog horn that blows after every niner score so if you hear the fog horn start cheering. REALLY!!!! You have to be told when they score.

I realize this memo was probly sent out by some suit in the public relations department that saw what happens in Seattle and thought “maybe we should get our fans to act like that” This person doesn’t know football and also doesn’t realize that the fans in San Fran already know all this. I just thought it was funny.

    #12TH MAN NEEDS NO REMINDERS

  10. Funny how no one heard of Seattle as the “12th man” until a couple of years ago. Their fans are “intensely loyal?” That’s news to me. Where were all these loyal fans during the 90s under the Holmgren regime? Never heard of any banner flying then. Heck, they even went to the Super Bowl with Hasselbeck and Shaun Alexander recently and I never heard of this “12th man” much less the breaking of any decible records.

Very interesting how the media works with the NFL to concoct these myths out of thin air.

  11. “more active, more vocal, and more numerous” that about sums up the Seahawks fan base only when they’re winning. Sadly you couldn’t find a Seahawks fan a few years back. It seems now they are everywhere.

  12. well fans are fans, and seahawks have a great team now so they are gonna support the crap out of them. cant fault them for that but I hope it doesn’t cause any extra “activity” at the game go niners!

  13. Very disrespectful and obnoxious … Act like you’ve been there before! then again.. I don’t think this team/franchise has ever been this good. congrats…just have some class..

  14. Yaaaaaaawn….fair weather bandwagon fans, are what’s wrong with this rivalry. I also think the Seahawks fan base is waaaaaay to obsessed with my niners, I mean this is borderline stalking. You guys better take advantage of the year you guys are having, but I see you guys going out like Marty’s chargers, preferably to the niners.

  15. I’m a huge hawks fan, but damn, I really hope they keep the message somewhat classy. Having brick purchased from your most hated rival is not gonna sit well with 9ers fans. I’d be pissed.

  16. “The development comes at a time when the Seahawks’ intensely loyal fan base seems to be getting more active, more vocal, and more numerous.”

That’s one way of putting it…

On a serious note, I feel bad for the actual Seahawks fans out there. It must be really annoying to deal with those bandwagoners posing as Seahawk zealots.

  17. “The development comes at a time when the Seahawks’ intensely loyal fan base seems to be getting more active, more vocal, and more numerous”

    Bandwagoners.

  18. There is a Temporary Flying Restriction over NFL stadiums beginning an hour before the game, and lasting till an hour after the game. So good for them–they can fly three miles away at a totally irrelevant time.

I’m not a Seattle or Frisco fan, but these Seahawks people are becoming even more annoying than Steelers fans. At least Pittsburgh has won something.

Someone please beat these frauds in January.

  19. Again, is any fanbase more in love with themselves than Seattle’s. Just more “look at us” from people who wear 12 jerseys with FAN on the back.

  20. Yes that’s really cool when you’re team has zero titles and the team you’re antagonizing is among the most iconic and legendary

  21. “If/when (when) the Seahawks secure a berth in the Super Bowl, will the 12th Man make the cross-country trek to New Jersey, where just one ticket will cost more than Sunday’s banner?”

I’ve already reserved my hotel room and purchased my Delta airline ticket. Smart buyers know you can get a better deal waiting to buy the ticket until the week before the game. I got 4 tickets to Superbowl XL for $2000 total because the seller just wanted to get rid of them.

I’ll be staying at the “W” in Hoboken, and going with a bunch of friends – we plan to take over the hotel and fly the 12 all over NYC. No matter what happens in the game.

  22. The seahawks “all of a sudden” loyal fan base!! By all means, if it makes you sleep better at night, fly a banner over the stadium for a few minutes before the game. How about you “seahawk loyalist” just pay me $1800.00 and I’ll pull a Aldon Smith and kick you in the nuts.

  23. Your joking right? Are you say saying that Seahawk fans can’t afford super bowl tickets? Sounds like more east coast elite-ism to me! Thats ok, being a Hawk fan since their inception I am quite used to this BS. I personally drove with three of my friends, ( two of them cheeseheads ) non stop to Wisconsin to witness the Seahawks take on Green Bay. It was a blast and money was no deterrent. I have a team logo, ( the new one not the original ) tattooed on my shoulder and my family members dress even newborns in Seahawk attire. This is not a overnight love affair, this is what fans do, not just in Seattle but in every NFL city in the USA. If you think any force of man or nature is capable of keeping the 12th man army from invading the stadium were our Hawks will be crowned champions, you are sadly mistaken. GO HAWKS!
PS Watching the Seahawks clinch the division at Candlestick this Sunday may rival the birth of my only son. Seriously

  24. Considering both fan bases…I don’t see this going over well for those wearing Seahawks jerseys in the stands on Sunday. Hope SFPD has enough riot gear to keep every under control.

  25. It’s the height of arrogance and stupidity for fans to think they somehow influence the results of a game.

  26. Seahawk fans are becoming insufferable. News flash guys: you aren’t the best or loudest “fans”. Put Jaguar fans in that stadium and they’ll be just as loud. It’s the stadium folks, not you. I love how they spend most home games looking at the noise meter trying to break records. The game is one the field people.

  27. The same bandwagoners that had 227 fans at Super Bowl XL. Steeler Nation outnumbered the Seachickens 100:1 at that game.

  28. how come I don’t remeber there being a 12th man at the Kingdome? That’s right because they SUCKED for all of those years. Talk about a frontrunning town, give me a break….

  29. Can the 12thMan also fly over a banner that says
“Hey Pete Carroll can you chew your gum with your mouth closed? Thank you from TV watching America”

  30. I was scanning the crowd on Monday night for a Steve Largent, Dave Krieg or Jim Zorn jersey and saw none! I didn’t even see a Matt Hasselbeck or Shaun Alexander…can you say bandwagon?

  31. I’d say that since were 11-1 our obsession with the niners lasts two weeks, week 2 and week 13. FYI, 9er fans did the same thing when they played in New Orleans but nobody knew because it’s a dome.

  32. Seattle’s version of the 12th man was born in the 1980’s in the Kingdome when Chuck Knox was the coach, the Seahawks played in AFC, and there were 30,000 people on the waiting list for season tickets. Then in the 90’s when that carpet bagger from northern California bought our team, fired Mike McCormick and Chuck Knox and drug our team to bottom of the NFL, and eventually tried to move the team to LA, the 12th man admittedly did lose a little steam. Bad ownership can wear down any fan base.

But we have come back strong now with Paul Allen, Mike Holmgren, and now Pete Carroll. The new stadium has been sold out since 2002 when it opened. Texaa A&M did gripe a bit about us using the term 12th man but Paul Allen made a big donation to their university and they dropped their complaints.

Question for 49er fans: How long did your franchise exist before you 1st superbowl?

How did Seattle do the last time they played in the Super bowl?
    ************
Are you saying a team that plays in a SB for the first time, and loses, cannot win the next time they go, if Seattle makes it?

I guess Denver, and NE should turn I their SB trophies.

  34. Ohhh it’s coming…it’s coming! Just wait! Thes giant seahawk heads are going to be popped! And it’s gonna be great!

  35. Going to try it again:
Aaannnnd the dismissive talk continues about the Sehawks and the loyal fan base which has supported them for years!
Bandwagoners…? Sure, there probably are some, as there always is when a team enjoys a breakout season such as we are having. But there are MANY more of us who have endured many years of frustration and disappointment. I personally have attended games for years and bought jerseys (Alexander, Hasselbeck) when the outlook was not so bright. But a true fan sticks with the team through thick and thin!!
Now, that we are enjoying such a FANTASTIC year, other teams and the NFL can NO LONGER ignore us!!
So what if we don’t have rings or trophies from previous years!!! The ONLY thing that matters during football season is the year we are in NOW!
We, the 12th Man, have a LOT to cheer about, and we have a great shot at ending up in New York in February!
But whether we do or not – we will be supporting and cheering on OUR Hawks!! We are loudER and proudER than EVER before!!! Go Hawks!!!

12th man is a knock off. Everyone knows the 12th man resides at Texas A&M
    ***********
The use of the 12th man actually originated/was first used at the U of Iowa in 1910 regarding an Iowa football game played in 1903 against U of Illinois. The reference of the 12th man was for the fans.

T A&M used the 12th man in 1922 for a guy who wasn’t good enough to make the team. But due to possible injury, the coach had the guy pulled from the stands to suit up incase of an injury. He never played.

The Seahawks retired the #12 in honor of the fans in 1984. This is why Seattle uses it.

I guess Seattle, and T A&M, are a knock off of the U of Iowa.

  37. Arrogant team, obnoxious fan base, Cheater Carroll head coach, = proven losing formula! Go 9ers! And yes we all know Seattle has won the last two games (in Seattle) but come Sunday 9ers make it six straight against the Bags at Candlestick!

  38. Let them go ahead and fly there little banner. It’s only going to piss our D off even more & make them more determined to shut them down.

  39. “The development comes at a time when the Seahawks’ intensely loyal fan base seems to be getting more active, more vocal, and more numerous.”

    Seattle…Home of the Bandwaggoners

  40. 49ers send fans a how-to guide on cheering for Seahawks game

    *********
Reading some news that S.F. fans need instruction on how to cheer?

Don’t believe me? Just google ’49er how to guide on cheering’.

    Poor, poor S.F. fans.

  41. I love the constant whiny themes: Band Wagon Fans; team is all on PEDs; Seattle has never won anything and the fans should keep their mouths shut, etc. ad nauseum. I really love the post about the guy scanning the crowd Monday and not seeing any old school jerseys! Were you at the game, pal, or were you just standing really close to the tv? Anyone who has spent any time in the Northwest knows that we have been fanatical about our Hawks and we have nothing to prove to anybody. I expect a great game and I’ll be yelling at the screen like every true fan I know. Go HAWKS!

  42. Why are Seattle fans so obnoxious? No one else in the league is as obsessed with the 49ers as the Seahawk fans. Jealous of something? And the whole brick thing? That’ll never fly with Niner fans. It’ll be pissed on, painted over, scratched up, or completely ripped out. Get over yourselves. GO NINERS!!

  43. “The Seahawks retired the #12 in honor of the fans in 1984. This is why Seattle uses it.”

This called a marketing gimmick to get people to show up and put butts in seats for a subpar product

“I guess Seattle, and T A&M, are a knock off of the U of Iowa.”

Well give credit to A&M for trademarking the phrase which is why your pathetic organization has to pay Texas A&M a licensing fee and state publicly that Texas A&M owns the 12th Man trademark each time it is used. Hopefully that will be on the rest of the banner and some of that $1800 that went to that licensing fee.

This complete frenzy that Seahawk “fans” are carrying on demonstrates one of two things,

-your a bandwagon fan climbing on for a thrill ride with little to no respect/understanding/knowledge of the NFL or its history
-your completely jealous of the success of everyone else

To crown yourself the Champ right now at this point just baffles me and by the way there has only been two others that have finished as Champion with one loss, 1984 49ers and 1985 Chicago Bears.
Seems like the asinine fan base has reared their ugly head along with that jackass DB that would have the audacity to yell and shout in the face of a future hall of famer with more hardware then he will probably ever see in his lifetime. Ask Patriot fans what it’s like to think that your unbeatable.

    Pathetic

  44. To bloodtyperedngold –
Simmer down! You sound quite bitter – gotta give us credit for what we have done already!
No one knows how the season will end up and who is going to end up in New York in February.
I don’t think any of us who love the Seahawks are “crowning ourselves champs right now”.
But.. we are ecstatic we have the BEST record in the NFL!!!! Can’t dispute that and so we’ll go with it! And that is NOT pathetic!!
Have a great Sunday!! And here’s to a GREAT game!!!
    12th Man Forever!

Keep crying. The retirement wasn’t a marketing gimmick. And Seattle didn’t need it to put butts in the seats. The games were sold out and the team had a 15K waiting list for season tickets.

You don’t like the Seahawks. That’s fine. No one but you cares.

T A&M had to settle. In now way was Paul Allen going to let the use of the 12th man disappear. If
T A&M had an issue with it, they should have done something about it after they trademarked the phrase in 1990, but they waited 10+ years to do so.

Paul Allen would have had T A&M spend hundreds of thousands, if not millions, to fight it in court. It was smart on their part to settle.

I do not really care about the banner flying above Candlestick. But I wouldn’t be surprised if some 9er fans do something similar in Seattle sometime in the future.

Like it or not, these two teams have the beginning of a rivalry. Both teams players don’t really like each other too much.

That being said, make sure you contact the 9er franchise so you can read up on how to cheer at the game against the Seahawks.

  46. “That being said, make sure you contact the 9er franchise so you can read up on how to cheer at the game against the Seahawks.”

Yeah, because screaming at the top of your lungs is such a tough skill to acquire.

Apparently it is since the S.F. franchise is telling its fans what to do, and how to do it.

  48. I think its funny, how so many people always hate on the Seahawks, or call their fans bandwagon/fairweather fans. And then they always live in the past, stating stupid things such as “How many Superbowl rings do you have?” etc,…
News flash, we aren’t living in the past!
As far as being bandwagon/fairweather fans, every team has them, not just the Seahawks. So before making such an idiotic comment, just stop and think about what you’re saying.

Die-hard Seahawk fans are exactly that, DIE-HARD! People shouldn’t be jealous of it, but take it as a challenge and go out and support your favorite team, and see if you can out-do the Seahawk fans.
