Joe Staley returns to practice for 49ers

St. Louis Rams v San Francisco 49ers Getty Images

The 49ers might not have to shuffle their offensive line as much as initially feared, as left tackle Joe Staley returned to the practice field Thursday.

According to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com, Staley took part in drills and seemed to be moving well during the portion of practice open to the media.

Staley suffered an MCL sprain in Sunday’s win over the Rams, and there was some concern he’d miss this week’s rematch with the Seahawks.

When he left last week’s game, they shifted right guard Alex Boone into play left tackle and brought backup Joe Looney to play Boone’s spot.

Left guard Mike Iupati was still out with a knee injury, as he’s been since the Nov. 17 game against the Saints. Adam Snyder has been playing there.

If Staley can’t play, the 49ers would have to make a transaction, since they’re carrying just eight linemen on their 53-man roster and keep seven active for each game.

San Francisco is going to get dominated this week, might as well rest Staley for when they lose in the wild card game.

  2. tommymomoney says: Dec 5, 2013 6:06 PM

Whether he’s playing or not, Kap is going to be running for his life. Seattle is better on offense, defense and special teams and it isn’t close. You Whiners fans wish you had a QB like RWilson.

I hate the Seahawks, their fans, coaches,GM,owner, equipment manager, their cheerleaders and everything else that has anything to do with them. You people that have never won anything are going down big.

Just like the last time they played each other?

    You mad bro?

What’s the series record since 2011? Who’s got it better then us? Nooooobody….y’all won 2 at home and act like u lead this rivalry. LOL it’s gunna be a split just like last year. It’s funny how u guys act like u own us when we own you.

  6. kuya206 says: Dec 5, 2013 6:32 PM

As much as I hate the 49ers, I respect them as a team. It’ll be a close game and will come down to the 4th quarter.

As for the whiner fans, yes we haven’t won a Super Bowl, I get that. Let’s remember that you haven’t won a SB since 1994 or when Jenna Jameson starred in her first movie.

I question a fan base where:
    A. They have to write a letter to the NFL because our crowd at the CLink was too noisy and puts your QB at a disadvantage.
    B. There was a memo sent out on “how to be a fan and gain home field advantage”

    Lol

20-9 49ers win and we hold you guys outta the end zone just like we did last year at the stick…ill give you guys another FG this time though.

hahaha Seattle has it better then them that’s for sure. .

Jeez, Seahawks fans, exercise some humility once in awhile. I’m a lowly Jets fan and if my team had thrashed the Pats 2 straight times, I wouldn’t feel the need to engage NE fans in comment sections just to soothe my massive inferiority complex.

Yes 49ers have not WON a SB since 1994, but how many have Seahawks won? and what NFC team WENT to the Superbowl last year (2013)?? Oh yeah it was the NINERS and we got there by beating the Falcon team that Wilson could not beat. Remember that kuya?

  13. ngbradley says: Dec 5, 2013 6:59 PM

Boone played great at tackle, and Looney was fine at guard.

the real issue here is the trade-off in the run game. Iupati is an elite run-blocking guard, one of the best in the NFL. but in pass-blocking, he’s mediocre-to-average.

  14. ninerfan0850 says: Dec 5, 2013 7:02 PM

Seahawk fans seem to ignore the fact that they have not won in SF since 2008. We won at Seattle in 2011. Our little sisters of the northwest need to calm their T’s. Do something significant in the NFL, please. Until you do, you can hold onto your guiness book of records for loudest crowd and hang your hats on that. I know it seems like a big deal to you guys….its just not a big deal to teams who have championship records. Niner nation would love to continue this “rivalry”…..but 5 rings on the fingers makes it hard to type. See you in the NFC championship game. Unless you choke on success again like you did vs ATL last year.

  15. legionofboom88 says: Dec 5, 2013 7:08 PM

Wow. Sprained MCL and he’s already out on the practice field? IT HAS to be PED’s. What a scumbag.

  16. bi49xfactor says: Dec 5, 2013 7:08 PM

Tommymomoney is an idiot, the only thing the Seahawks lead the league in is players getting popped for PED tests. the only thing they know how do is run their mouths and pop Adderal. Go 49ers, I do believe they have 5 Championships, an the Shehawks have how many, I believe that is zero. The only player they have who is straight is Russell Wilson.

  17. bi49xfactor says: Dec 5, 2013 7:13 PM

in response to 253Seahawk, the only thing the Seahawks are better at is popping Adderal, and failing P.E.D tests.

Let’s remember that the Niners came within a few yds/seconds of winning one just last year while Seattle was watching their rivals play for a Championship.

Let’s remember that Seattle has only made the playoffs in 12 of their 37 years in the NFL.
SF has made the playoffs 20 times in that same 37yrs.

Now go continue pumping your chest in front of the mirror over a few regular season wins.

    Hey KUYA26,

The Stick has been home to five Super Bowls and great crazy fans for 40 years at the Stick. We are not the flavor of the month like Seahawk fan. Who knew the Seahawks where even in the NFL until five years ago. We will rock the Stick and dont need any piped in noise or tired 12th man talk. Youre weak Seattle. Where’s you b ball team?

  29. mubbcsoc says: Dec 5, 2013 8:33 PM

75% of Joe Staley is better than any replacement. Would hate to see him rush back and hurt himself more though..

  30. oreo51 says: Dec 5, 2013 8:35 PM

Time for a chop block on Joe Staley’s right knee. If he plays he will not be effective. Either way it is going to be a long day for Kaeperdick.

I don’t like either of these teams from the coaches to the players to the fanbases.

I guess if I had to choose one I would prefer the Seahawks just because I like RW and Seattle is a cool city.

As for San Fran fans… don’t get me started.

  34. adderal says: Dec 5, 2013 10:22 PM

Same broken record arguments, old Super Bowl rings, no rings, ped’s whiners, lol
Gonna be a hell of a game, I think it’s great that the Seahawks make there fans apart of there success but it seems to make some of you pump your chest out like you have any say in the outcome. Particularly on the road. Might be your year and might not, either way I think you loose this Sunday.

  35. number1hawkfan says: Dec 5, 2013 11:28 PM

I’m glad everyone hates us. The Seahawks talk trash the fans talk trash and so far we’ve been backing it up. You expect us to shut up so you’ll like us???? Get real. Can’t wait for Sunday. We’ve always been a soft team and now we’re the bad boys of the NFL and I couldn’t be happier. Keep the hate coming!! Do you d bag niners fans really think we care what you think? You think your tired comments are gonna stop us? We’re gonna keep flying banners over your crap stadium and buying bricks in your new one. I’m telling you this has been a fun couple seasons and we ain’t going anywhere. Unlike you we have a franchise QB and we’ll be beating you down for years to come. Call us cheaters… Tell us we haven’t won anything…. You think it has any effect on us?? All we care about is what happens on the field. Nothing makes me happier than seeing your idiot coach and your scared QB get a beat down and trust me it’s coming. Can’t wait to rub it in your faces Sunday after the game. The first Seahawks Niners post that comes up after the game come find me there. Look for number1hawkfan on the comment board I’ll be there I expect to see you there as well. Take the loss like a man and come say your sorry. HAHAHAHA

In a lot of people’s eyes, Seattle has yet to actually win anything worth bragging about.
Seattle is desperate for relevance, and their record does say 11-1, but their record is ridden with suspended substance abusers.
They have a tough time when they play good defenses. St. Louis, Carolina, and even the Texans, titans and Tampa bay were all losses turned comebacks.
They are on a high, and here’s a little statistic:
In the past 8 years, only one team that had first week bye has actually won the Super Bowl.

  38. kuya206 says: Dec 6, 2013 1:40 AM

Like I said, I get that we haven’t won a SB. I understand that the Seahawks won’t get the respect until we do…

BUT All you whiner fans are typical… Totally ignore the fact that I acknowledged that we have no SBs AND that you have a fan base that wrote a ridiculous letter to the league complaining about the loud noise as well as a detailed outline on how to be a fan to gain home field advantage. You’re either born with being a team fanatic or not… No need for a reminder

Pete Carroll is the Bobby Bowden of pro football. Does absolutely no coaching. Has good cordinators that will be leaving for other head jobs in the near future. They will have a few bad years ala USC and he will be running back to a big college program again. In which case he will do nothing but recruit…and coach his players up on how to beat the system while using PEDs..ala the current Seahawks…Seahawks are good dont get me wrong but Pete Carroll will be the ultimate demise of them…hes now where near the class of Jim Harbaugh who actually knows the game in and out..
