Mike Mitchell says he doesn’t really think Brees is “soft”

Panthers safety Mike Mitchell has made plenty of big (and expensive) hits this year, but he was putting his backpedal on display Wednesday.

Mitchell took a step back from a previous conversation when he suggested Saints quarterback Drew Brees “stop being soft,” coincidentally making amends days before he has to play Brees.

I don’t really think he’s a soft player,” Mitchell said, via Jonathan Jones of the Charlotte Observer. “Obviously he’s a very, very, very good quarterback, and I have a lot of respect for what he’s done as a player and what he’s done in this league.

“It was really just more of a comment on the rule changes. It was really a 15-minute interview where someone took 45 seconds and made an article out of it.”

Well, yeah. That’s kind of how articles get made. So apparently that means Mitchell didn’t really mean the thing that fell out of his mouth, since many other things did too.

The Panthers safety has made a bit of a habit of saying silly things this year, and you get the feeling the Saints might linger on the original comments more than the attempt to soften them.

  1. Historically when a team like the Saints gets blown out like the way they did at Seattle, and when a team like Carolina blows out another team like the Panthers did to the Bucs, The team that gets blown out almost always is the winning team.

  2. Really intelligent thing to say before you have to play the Saints at home in the Dome where they don’t lose. This will come back to haunt him after they lose.

    WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
    DATTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT

  3. Saints fans. You sound confident but you cant honestly sit there and say you aren’t nervous and that you have this game in the bag. We lost by less than a touchdown to the team that just embarrassed you on National Television. We are coming and this isn’t 2011.

You also lost to the Bills and Cardinals, 2 teams the Saints blew out.

  5. I remember when going to play in New Orleans meant you got to see their fans with bags on their heads. I suppose that’s where the phrase “Who DAT?” came from. With the Saints, teams have learned that all you have to do is cover Graham and you have removed over half their passing attack. As the Cajun Chef would say, it’s “gare-run-teed”, he’ll be covered Sunday like “beans on rice”.
