Aaron Rodgers out, Matt Flynn to start vs. Falcons

Rodgers Getty Images

Green Bay will be without quarterback Aaron Rodgers for at least one more game.

The Packers have announced that Rodgers is out again on Sunday against the Falcons, the fifth full game he has missed since suffering a broken collarbone against the Bears.

Matt Flynn will start for the Packers and Scott Tolzien will back him up.

Now the question is whether the Packers can stay close enough to the NFC North lead to make it worth considering the possibility that Rodgers could return for the final three games and help them win the division. If the Packers can beat the Falcons without Rodgers — and if the Lions lose to the Eagles — then Green Bay would still be in the hunt for a division title, and a return of Rodgers would make them a legitimate threat to win the NFC North.

But if the Packers lose this week (and especially if the Lions also win at Philadelphia), they’re just about out of any hope of winning the division. At that point, it might be time to shut Rodgers down.

Season’s over, folks. The complete incompetence of Thompson to address the backup QB position, the complete incompetence of McCarthy to draw up an offense to help his backup QB succeed, and the complete incompetence of Capers to field an NFL defense has doomed the season.

This team is officially one man – Aaron Rodgers. Every other man in that organization should start donating a portion of their salary to Rodgers. They’d all be out of a job without him.

    Pathetic.

  13. drbob117 says: Dec 6, 2013 1:58 PM

The media likes to talk about “shutting people down” , but that’s a bad idea both in the locker room and with the fan base. Once a guy is cleared medically, his teammates expect him to play. Those that don’t, lose credibility in the room, and you certainly don’t want that with your QB. If the medical staff clears him vs Dallas ( it will be almost 2 months by then) expect to see him play. That division isn’t good enough for any team to wave the white flag.

You must not be from Minnesota. According to them, the Milwaukee Brewers don’t exist. Neither do the Bucks. Nor do the 8th ranked Badger basketball team, the 23rd ranked Marquette basketball team, the #2 ranked Badger hockey team, or the Badger football team that’s gone to 6 Rose Bowls in the last 18 years.

Tired of you dummies talking about the “long term risk” if Rodgers were to play. There is no long term risk. The only risk is that he might fracture the bone again. Worst case scenario, he would need surgery in the off-season and be a full go by the time training camp starts.

In other words, there is no long term risk risk.

But hey, if it makes you feel better.

    My, times have changed…………..

Many questions, now that the packers are playing like the worst team in the league.

No defense, no offensive line, no GM (TT) that can keep draft picks, nor develop even a semblance of a QB program, and a coach who looks lost.

Thanks kev, a Viking fan here for 40 years, and I want to congratulate you on taking ownership of both the good and bad times of your pack team.

Most pack fans have either erased those times from their memory, or are simply too young to have gone through an extended 25 years of failure for your team….1967-1992.

Your team has been very fortunate to have two MVP QBs over the last 20 years, where we have had a few good ones, but too many misses.

Keep up the good work kev, a true fan of ANY team recognizes failures in order to INTELLIGENTLY articulate how a team needs to improve, versus becoming a willful blind pack fan such as : TT is a genius, Flynn is the answer, we will go undefeated when we get Rodgers back, MM knows exactly what he is doing, everything is ok because we have a better record than the (vikings that’s a head scratcher), on and on.

Keep up the good work kev, because denial is more than a river in Egypt.

Barney Rubble couldn’t coach himself out of a wet paper bag. He should send 3/4 of his paycheck to Rodgers as without him he is exactly what most of us already knew. Mediocre to below average at best.

TT is the same. He made a living off of riding Favre and Rodgers coattails.

I do not see them shutting down regardless of what happens this weekend, whether it is losing to Atlanta or Detroit beating Philly (which will not happen). The team pays Rodgers to play, not sit him to ensure he is healthy for next year by not playing him. First of all, they still are not out of it, and second, people pay a lot of money to watch him play. If he is healthy, he should play. Also, I am not a Packers fan, but they are a lot more entertaining to watch when he is playing. I have the Sunday ticket and click right past the Packers game if Flynn is the starting qb, but I’ll watch if Rodgers is behind center.

Packers suck now because they lost their best player? How many teams lose an MVP and are still great. Colts were nearly unbeatable with Manning and the next season without him they win just 2 games and then get to the playoffs with a good qb that was a rookie. The Saints are essentially the same team that didn’t make the playoffs last year and they are one of the best this year just because of a coach. This is a great Packer team, sure they lost a lot of steam and Seneca Wallace let us all down but there is no reason to blow it up. We are a play maker safety away from being dominate on defense. TT has done a fine job of putting together a quality team and sure he sacrificed bringing in a vood back up qb but how many teams have even a good starting qb. Don’t jump off tue ledge quite yet. We were favorites to win the super bowl before Rodgers went down, if we don’t make it this year we regroup and make a run next year.

Packers suck now because they lost their best player? How many teams lose an MVP and are still great.
    —————————————–

Funny thing is the Vikings have only won three games WITH their MVP player. Now that’s a team that sucks!!

    ———————————

And the Packers with All-Pro talent five deep at every position could beat that team at home…wow.

If I was coaching the Pack, I’d make dang sure Claymaker cut his stringy hair and it was at least 2 inches above the collar.

The real problems facing the Packer Org is they will firmly believe everything would have been fine had he not been hurt, and refuse to accept, this is thee worst defensive team in football and Dom Capers is responsible.
I read a clip for a GB mouthpiece writer who says the 3-4 makes sense because you don’t have to pay the expensive defensive ends you can rush with linebackers and corners and safeties instead. Ya how is that working for these bums.

    —————————————-

They had a horrible Defense in 2011, yet went 15-1. Rodgers is the Packers best defense, he can outscore the opposing offense making any D’s job easier. I agree they have a lot to work on in the D, but having Rodgers back improves everything.

Maybe the “owners” of the team should get together and make him play.

  84. lambeauwest says: Dec 6, 2013 6:04 PM

Anyone else find it interesting that a team like the Falcons with a their healthy star QB can’t win more than 2 or 3 games. It’s one thing for a team like GB to NOT win any of its games since its franchise QB went down, yet Matty Ice with some decent players around him is battling for the number 1 draft pick. I think its safe to say this confirms my suspicion that Matty Ice is really just a game manager, not a difference making franchise QB.

For you Packer haters, your worst nightmare is to hope the Packers tank this season and give Ted Thompson a bunch of high draft picks. The last time this happened Thompson drafted BJ Raji and Clay Matthews in the first round. Most of the time GB is selecting around 25 to 32nd. You don’t want Thompson picking near the top 10!

What happened to the Packer savior Tolzien, LOL!

“On behalf of Packers fans I would just like to say…

When do pitchers and catchers report?’
    ———————-

You must not be from Minnesota. According to them, the Milwaukee Brewers don’t exist. Neither do the Bucks. Nor do the 8th ranked Badger basketball team, the 23rd ranked Marquette basketball team, the #2 ranked Badger hockey team, or the Badger football team that’s gone to 6 Rose Bowls in the last 18 years.

“Of course you guys are more loyal and knowledgable fans than us…what else is there to do in Wisconsin?” Everything…better than Minnesota. With scenary.
    —————————-
except for the economy, future job growth, or really anything to be proud of. The only thing “wisconsin” has on minnesota is better deer hunting, beer sales on sunday, and a more successful football team…. other than that, that “state” is a factory of shame and sadness.. Good thing the great state of Minnesota is near, or where would folks from “wisconsin” work, or find decent medical care? Its basically like The Great State of Minnesota is like a giant charity for the less fortunate..

Oh, here we go! Whats next, are you going to start talking about McCarthy philanthropy? The last time this…the last time that. Goodness, Packer fans always live in the past. Guess what, tell me again what happened last time Matt Flynn played the Lions. What happened this year? Case closed.

  89. aldante66 says: Dec 6, 2013 6:58 PM

The Falcons will have a field day against the Pack. No one can cover so lots of passing plays, no pass rush to be worried about, a short QB who gets half his passes batted down on the line and a running back that works like a dog to get three yards at a time.

No Ted will trade those picks away for a raft of 5,6,7 round picks who will be cheap and fit into his development program. A program that is failing miserably but hey he has the smallist payroll.

[The Patriots went 10-6 the year Brady went down with an injury]

This is a great Packer team…

We are a play maker safety away from being dominate on defense…

TT has done a fine job of putting together a quality team…

…if we don’t make it this year we regroup and make a run next year

    [I hope you’re being sarcastic, other wise…

Nothing like a Rodgers update to bring out the emotionally crippled Viking fans.

You people shouldn’t let us control your lives like this.

Conveniently left out college football and college basketball…those aren’t big time sports are they?

Say Gophers and/or Minnesota again so I can point and laugh at you like the rest of the world does.

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXx

Really? Why would you be laughing at the Gophers? Okay, so lets include them. Here ya go…

The following is FACT and is indisputable.

    WISCONSIN Football:

Big 10 Titles – 14 National Titles – 0 (yes that would be o National trophies in the old trophy case)

    Overall record: 653-479-51

    GOPHER Football:

    Big 10 Titles – 18 National Titles – 7
Making them one of only four teams to ever win back-to-back National Title TWICE! In fact, they won three in a row once.

    Overall record: 660-490-44

    Basketball:

All of Wisconsin’s coaches from 1934 to 1991 had overall losing records. Then they had Stu Jackson followed by Dick Bennett who both had overall winning records, but had losing Big 10 records. Not until Bo Ryan in 2001 did they have a coach with a winning record in both overall and Big 10. Their first 20+ win season came in 1998. By that time Minnesota had accumulated 8 such seasons, the first in 1972.

Wisconsin NIT appearances – 4 NCAA – 14 (3 as far as Sweet 16, 1 Elite 8 and 1 Final Four) All but one NCAA appearance were in the last 13 years.

Gophers NIT – 14 (Champions twice and Runner Ups once) NCAA – 12 (1 as far as Sweet 16, 1 Elite 8 and 1 Final Four)

Neither has won a National Championship.

    Overall record:

    Wisconsin: 1463-1148
    Gophers; 1519-1113

So there you have it. The Gophers have been far better than the Badgers in football and slightly better in basketball.

Be careful what you wish for. :)

When the Packers suck their fans always resort to the past. Oh we have 13 Championships , of course most of those came when there were only like 10 teams in the league. They LOVE to live in the past which they might as well as their team SUCKS this year which is the ONLY year that counts now. Rodgers is the most OVERRATED QB EVER. The king of the 5-10 yard pass. Packer fans = the king of excuses.

  95. truthserum4u says: Dec 6, 2013 9:42 PM

Come on filthy, you and your pals (or aliases) are worth a good laugh (intentional or not) every now and then.
