Jerry Jones knows he’ll “get busted” if he talks about Adrian Peterson

AP

On Thursday, Vikings running back Adrian Peterson mused about playing for the Cowboys or Texans.

On Friday, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones resisted the temptation to muse about employing Peterson.

“We don’t want to get into hypotheticals in any way,” Jones said on his Friday appearance with 105.3 The Fan Dallas/Fort Worth.  “As a matter of fact that’s called ‘get busted’ in the NFL to be talking about somebody’s else player.”

It’s actually called tampering.  But we strongly prefer “get busted.”

While Jones can’t talk publicly about it, nothing stops him from privately contacting the Vikings in the offseason to see if a reverse-Herschel could be accomplished.

  1. Adrian Peterson isn’t leaving the historic franchise known as the Minnesota Vikings.

We are the founders of real football and made what it is today.

Adrian knows if he stays in Minnesota he will win multiple superbowls and establish himself as the best player to ever play the game of football.

  2. Don’t know if any owner would give up what the Vikings gave up years ago for Herschel, for any player…having said that if Peterson ends up in Dallas they will become a perennial “contender” …for a few years……

  3. The Cowboys have a proud tradition that includes some impressive Superbowl wins.

The Vikings have an embarrassing tradition that includes the word “Whizzinater”.

  4. Peterson has clearly been the best RB in the league for some time now but you still have to be wary in giving a huge contract to an RB thats gonna be 30 soon and has as much mileage as he does.

  5. This is big news now because its AP…this talk will all disappear soon enough.

    AP is staying in Minnesota.

  6. Take a look at the Cowboys Cap Space moving forward…

How in the world would this even come close to happening? They are facing one of the worst cap situations since the implementation of the Salary Cap.

Despite the increase in projected cap, the math is borderline impossible without shedding 3-4 big name players.

  7. Why is it okay for Peterson to “muse” about it publicly then?

And what difference would it make. Jason Garret still would not run the ball except two random games per year anyway.

  8. A “reverse-Herschel”? Well, the only reason the original Herschel Walker deal ever took place was because the Vikings owner at the time, Mike Lynn, wanted an easy way out of having to pay top dollar for higher round draft picks.

So Lynn traded away each of the Vikings first and second round draft picks to the Cowboys for the following three years in exchange for Walker. I remember at the time betting my friend a case of beer that Walker would never rush for a 1,000 yards in a season as a Viking. That case of beer was the only thing this Viking fan enjoyed about that trade.

So unless Jerry Jones is looking to cut costs in the same manner that Mike Lynn was, you can forget about there being a “reverse-Herschel” trade.

As for AP leaving the Vikings, I sure hope not. But the fact that it has come up is not a good sign.

  9. Total stud and a Packer, Bear, and Lion killer.

He is the epitome of STUD.

Best RB of our era, and probably of all time.

All Day is a freak, and he will have at least 3-5 years of strong years left.

My hunch is he breaks Emmitt’s record in 5 years and goes down in history as BEST OF ALL TIME!

  10. Wow. This move is seeming more and more likely. Hey poet why are all your guys thinking of jumping ship?
Why would your gm cut Winfield, only to pay Freeman? Why are you in every posts degrading the Seahawks? I know you’re mad Seattle has acquired your best players, but we are giving you a good head coach in Bevell soon.
Calm down with all the hate and jealousy. Start blogging about next year’s draft instead

  11. It would be funny to see jerrah give up the ranch for an old running back who will more than likely break down, and to see Rick Speilman waste the picks on some bad wide receivers and a bad QB most likely.

    umm hes 25

  13. I think it’s 2 different things. Tampering with things is like breathing for Jerry. “Get busted” is what happens when you get caught tampering too aggressively in public. He’s just letting everybody knows that he only secretly tampers, but not the kind you can ever prove against him, because he won’t state the explicit words while recording devices are present, thus he’s tossing us a super subtle hint to think about on our own. He’s showboating and wants all of America to know that he is in control of everything without being super obvious about it. That’s how it stays legal!

And agreed that the new NFL Monopoly version should replace the “Go to Jail” space with Jerry’s face saying “Get Busted”.

  15. Well I can talk about it without getting busted.

Texans should trade Arian Foster, swap #1 picks this year and give up next years 1st or 2nd to get All Day!

With the roster the Texans already have and AD… plus you should be able to get a highly rated QB with the Vikings pick…. Texans could be back to SB contenders in 2 years

  17. Coaches talk about opposing players every single week. Usually it is the usual PR BS about how ‘he’s a good player/real competitor/talented/someone to be reckoned with/blah blah blah’.

That’s not tampering. Talking about how much you want to talk him about joining your team or how you might use him or what you’d pay him — that’s tampering because it is essentially making a preliminary offer during an off-limits period.

  18. If it wasn’t for AP Minnesota would have 2 wins in the last four years. Imagine how many records AP would have by now if he played on a real team?

Yeah…because people (fans) are the ones solely responsible for a team winning a SB.

Maybe corporations can talk smack, and not fans, since that’s what funds the league.

  26. Unless the Cowpies do a major salary dump ala Raiders, they don’t have the cap room to trade for AP.

Houston is a viable destination even with Foster
    (disk surgery on his back).

AP lives in Houston in the off season and they do have some cap room.

    The logistics seem fairly unrealistic.

    AP and Vike’s #1 to Texans for their #1 & 3

    OR

AP and Vike’s #1 to Texans for their #1 & Tate )UFA).

  28. Can’t blame Peterson for losing focus and thinking about getting out of East Dakota. After all, Vikes haven’t been in contention since around Halloween.

  29. Jerry needs a GM before he needs AP. If he hadn’t played monopoly money to all those recent busts on and off his team, he’d be able to afford a decent line for Murray and Romo but they’re stuck with one all pro, one guy and four nobody’s.

The ‘boys are going to be a .500 team as long as this character runs the show.

  30. It’ll pay Dallas back for what the did to Minnesota with the Hershel Walker trade, Dalls will end up getting the same value that Minn. did in that trade. No RBs ever achieve in the second go round what they did in the first. Look at Steven Jackson in ATL shadow of his former self, LT,Emmitt,Hershel, the list goes on and on. AP wn’t do crap for crappy Dallas Cowpukes.

  31. I wouldn’t put it past Jurrah to make a reverse Herschel Walker deal. He’s clearly lost it ala Al Davis. The only things missing are the bandaid on the forehead and the Power Point presentation.

BTW, Herschel Walker STILL looks like he could play. That guy is a genetic freak.

  32. AD for romo and a 1st rounder! I’ll take it! While I love AP, a RB will never get us a ring, it’s pathetic this franchise had never put a winner around him! Wilf is a terrible owner! Any framchise that does not emulate the Pats, is foolish

  33. The wisest move for Jerry would be to trade ALL of his first thru 7th round picks in advance for the next FIVE YEARS in exchange for 5 picks in every round six years from now. The 5 yrs of picks will, no doubt, be wasted on injury prone / crippled / uncoachable nit-wits so why not load up in the sixth year and pay Alabama Coach Nick Saban, Lsu Coach Les Miles and UCLA’s John Wooden consulting fees to make those 35 draft picks?
We can ‘hang with’ what we’ve got until then and almost everyone on the team will be ready for retirement by then.

  34. Peterson still has 4 years left on his contract, he’s not going anywhere. Sorry, but you don’t trade a once in a generation player who is still in their prime (and under contract for the forseeable future).

  35. AP’s under contract for the remainder of his productive years, not to mention the reason the Vikes sell any tickets, so it truly would take a reverse Herschel Walker trade to justify Jerry Jones and the Cowboys wasting away his remaining NFL years.

  36. doctorrustbelt says: Dec 6, 2013 2:41 PM

“Minnesota Vikings Record with adrian peterson:

What’s the point you are trying to make? That a RB doesn’t impact the game as much as a good QB? (True) Or are you trying to argue AP is overrated? (False)

Detroit Lions Record with Barry Sanders:

72 wins – 79 losses (including Playoffs, 71-73 regular season).

Even though the 90’s Lions weren’t always the best team, I’d still say Barry was pretty good wouldn’t you? (True)

  37. Wow, if only the GM had the power, ego and faith of the Owner to make that reverse Herschel trade happen.

    ——————————————-
Dude, will you please stop? This is so counter-productive.

  42. I can understand why Peterson wants to leave the Vikings, there is no chance of a Superbowl there anytime soon.

But why the desire to play for a franchise that has won one playoff game in the last 1o years or the other TX based franchise that will likely be the first team on draft day? I realize the Viking fans are delusional but did it rub off on AD too?

  43. Jones should have said (in Wes Welker fashion):

“I could sit here ALL-DAY and tell you who are off-season target is, but that wouldn’t be legal. I’ve been thinking about this ALL-DAY and let me tell you we really need to upgrade the RB position. We need someone who can take the ball to the house ALL-DAY long. The best idea I’ve heard ALL-DAY is that we need to make some type of franchise changing move, but that will be decided in the off-season. When Jason and I sit down after the season, we’ll need to hash things out ALL-DAY to figure this one out.”

  44. i bet the rams try to move bradford to a team like minnesota way before dallas could even math out the books.

use your brains people. dallas would have to give up romo, ware, maybe sean lee and possibly another player just to have room under the cap to afford peterson.

if you think there really is a chance at him leaving minnesota (there isn’t) then give me some realistic places for him to land.

otherwise you’re just in dreamland with the unicorns and isht.

  45. Again, why would AP want to go from one failing franchise to another failure?

Please release AP Minnesota, don’t make him retire a loser.

Marcus Allen, Jerome Bettis, Marshawn Lynch

That being said, no chance he goes to Dallas. Even if they cut several high cap players, that would only accelerate money into the current salary cap. Anyone who believes this has any chance of happening does not understand the way the rules work.

  47. Please Jerry….dump your next 3 drafts and all the young, cheap defensive players that come with that for Peterson.

    Signed,
    Giants fans

  48. When Adrian Peterson was talking about finishing his career there he was talking in hypotheticals about when he was 35 you numbskull media jackals. Adrian Peterson isn’t going to Dallas anytime soon for so many reasons it would take a novel to write. So please stop with the non stories and stick to week 14!

  49. abninf,

That’s all good and well about Jerry, but you didn’t address cap situation he created as GM / Owner. It’s a Cap nightmare.

The fans don’t think about the financial implications they just see the big shiny Free Agent.

Who would have to go to even make this possible the question. They are flat out strapped on moves for the foreseeable future despite your perceived “Jerry magic”.

The league has changed dramatically since Jerry won those titles nearly 15-20 years ago especially with the Cap & Free Agency.

I’m not saying it won’t happen, I’m just curious HOW it would happen.

  50. I said rick spielman should be embarrassed for not trading any veteran over the age of 25 before the trade deadline. Allen, Williams, greenway, Jennings, loadholt, Sullivan, and yes, Peterson.

This team is about to go on a three year rebuilding pattern and to not get anything for guys who are about to leave or lose trade value is just stupid. Especially Jared Allen. How could you not trade him?

Nfl should not have a trade deadline. They should have trades all season and all offseason long. That would be far more interesting.

  51. Most of you are very wrong in your assessment of Adrian petersons career in Minnesota. You say he would have much more production on a “real team.” More yards, touchdowns…etc

    False. Absolutely false.

The Vikings are one of the very very few teams that run first and second, and maybe pass once in a while. Minnesota is a running team and no other team in the nfl emphasizes the run like the Vikings. If anything, his production would be far lower on any other pass heavy team, which most teams are now.

Of course, this is a detriment to the Vikings, because all successful teams since 2000 have been pass heavy, including the 2009 Vikings with Favre.

So, Peterson is best to stay in Minnesota where his numbers will flourish but he won’t ever win a Super Bowl. Big deal. Marino didn’t win a Super Bowl and most consider him top three of all time in terms of talent.

  52. See that’s funny because how many wins have the cowboys had since 96? While my team may not have any superbowls, it makes me happy to know my team has been more relevant for the past 13 years than them. Also 44-6 ring a bell? Talk to us when you actually get a clutch QB. See you week 17 Cowgirls.

  53. Dec 6, 2013 2:26 PM

Isn’t him gushing over Jay Ratliff (Chicago Bear) the same thing? Idiot

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

He isn’t gushing over Ratliffe. He is making the very good point that Rat was cleared to play for Dallas, refused to play saying he was still hurt, then two weeks later is playing for the Bears. Rat is the one who should be fined.

  54. Just, Because AP said he has thought about it means nothing! Every player in any sport emagines playing for the home town team!!! He has also said that he would like to play for only one team his whole career!! And that means more to most players these days!! Free agency has made playing for one team thier whole career pretty rare!!

  55. When the Packers suck their fans always resort to the past. Oh we have 13 Championships , of course most of those came when there were only like 10 teams in the league. They LOVE to live in the past which they might as well as their team SUCKS this year which is the ONLY year that counts now. Rodgers is the most OVERRATED QB EVER. The king of the 5-10 yard pass. Packer fans = the king of excuses.

  56. Please gm jj make this happen signed Redskins Nation LOL and LMAO all the way. What an IDIOT.!!!!!!!!!!!

  57. No state income tax in Texas. Plus, the Cowboys are a much more visible team than the Vikings, which would lead to more lucrative endorsement contracts. If he’s smart, he’ll take less salary to play for the Cowboys AND put more in the bank.

  58. Damn, Adrian, I can see you leaving Minnesota because they aren’t winning squat, but not going to the Sowboys, the all-time choke leaders in the NFL. Go play for the 49ers or the Seahawks for a year, then check out your options.

  59. He isn’t gushing over Ratliffe. He is making the very good point that Rat was cleared to play for Dallas, refused to play saying he was still hurt, then two weeks later is playing for the Bears. Rat is the one who should be fined.

    ………………………………………

Rat should be fined and sued! He had a contract and a signing bonus he had already cashed and he refused to live up to that contract.

As to Peterson; no! Great RB? Yes. Trade anything for a 30+ year-old RB? No.

  60. eaglesnd18 says: Dec 6, 2013 7:08 PM

Talk to us when you actually get a clutch QB.

    ……………………………………………………..

That’s because the Eagles have had such an extensive list of clutch QBs, right. Got to admit that the low and away slider that McChunks had for the Eagles was a great pitch. Lousy pass, but a great pitch. Dude, were you even alive the last time the Eagles won the NFL title?

  61. Think about this, DeMarcus Ware in the offer for Peterson. Sweetens the pot and clears cap space for Dallas.

  62. Also Adrian’s contract has exhausted the guaranteed money. It is in his best interest to redo a deal perhaps front loaded with guaranteed cash and a lower cap hit.

Adrian has 3-4 great years left. To play in front of his home town and receive guaranteed money, I bet he’d be willing to work with the Cowboys.

  63. Not going to happen. AP is the MN Vikings and nobody, not even crazy Jerry would trade enough to warrant the asking price.

No Cowboy fans, you are stuck in mediocrity with your owner/GM drafting duds for the foreseeable future. Good luck with that.

  64. Jerry Jones, like Al Davis, is the Cowboys biggest problem..I’m not saying AP should stay in Minnesota, but don’t ruin your career AP by going to Dallas.

  65. The Vikings couldn’t win 3 SB’s in 10 years even if they were guaranteed to make it. The Vikings new stadium sponsor is Swiffer so the Vikings can dust off their EMPTY trophy case. Vikings are 0-3 when going to the SB. A.D. Would be smart to leave & go to a contending team.
