T.J. McDonald not fined for grabbing Vernon Davis’s groin

tjmcdonald AP

San Francisco tight end Vernon Davis thinks there should be a rule against tackling players by the penis. But apparently there is no such rule now.

The NFL has confirmed that Rams safety T.J. McDonald was not fined for the way he grabbed Davis while tackling him on Sunday. So the league evidently has no problem with the way McDonald grabbed Davis.

Davis, however, did have a problem with it: He took to Twitter to lobby for a rule “saying that a defender can not tackle a player by his penis.” Davis described it as “the most painful thing ever!”

It may have been painful, but it wasn’t illegal. Even though it should be.

It’s a good thing Greg Oden stuck with basketball.

I guess that is why Greg Oden does not play football. He would be too easy to “tackle.”

Better tuck it in next time, Vernon.

so basically from now on, players who consume Viagra will be easier to tackle?

    Just the tip?

As a Hawks fan I can appreciate Vernon Davis and his skills he’s one of if not my favorite TE bc of how multi dimensional he is in football and in life.

But seriously Vernon sounded like a whiny girl complaining about that tackle.. All football plays know and agree.. Take them down doing whatever it takes PERIOD… Legal or not, I will not let you score… This was clearly not intentional… It’s embarrassing for him and Niners and niners fans alike to complain about something so accidental and understandable.. He sounds like a little female we all can agree on that..

Get Ur act together.. Go Hawks..

Lol no it shouldn’t – how about you just simply wear a dam cup? Does ‘player safety’ not apply to your man hood?

I’m having a real problem with the titles of the last two stories being in such close proximity to one another.

  16. slickwilliam says: Dec 6, 2013 6:37 PM

Vernon Davis got tackled mid thigh and it’s a “groin tackle”… It’s a burden really, it’s always that big

  17. slugbaitspace says: Dec 6, 2013 6:40 PM

Crown-of-the-helmet rule does not apply here…

  18. goldrush36 says: Dec 6, 2013 6:42 PM

Or maybe those that say he should wear a cup should wear one themselves and then play. There’s a reason they tell you not to wear them even in high school. Lot different than baseball

  23. wimpyburgers says: Dec 6, 2013 6:52 PM

Vernon Davis really should consider employing the “Tuck Rule” i.e.; wearing a protective cup

  24. mi6agent says: Dec 6, 2013 6:52 PM

Hmm…If Vernon Davis does not have any children, TJ McDonald will probably get sued in the future.

In the off-season, there will be a trade involving McDonald and Davis in a “package” deal.

  28. dgforreal says: Dec 6, 2013 7:23 PM

I’ve seen that type of around the waist tackle a million times. It was obviously an accident but you can’t blame the guy for not letting go.

That’s assuming he even knew he was holding onto said body part.

If he knew then what, trying to let go and re-tackle one of the most freakishly strong TE’s in the league? Yea good luck with that.

Good call on not fining the guy.

    Wear a cup.

  30. gosfvr says: Dec 6, 2013 7:34 PM

  31. doctorrustbelt says: Dec 6, 2013 7:34 PM

Ol’ McDonald only needed one hand to get him to the ground.

Thank you. I made a post in an earlier story vilifying those who suggest football players either routinely do, or should, wear a cup. None of them do, and they shouldn’t, because it impairs your ability to run/jump/cut.

Thankfully, shots to the mid-section and tackles of this nature are rare in football – heck, even in life. You have about the same chances of getting hit in the groin in football as you do basketball, playing with your kids, etc.

Do you wear a cup for those activities?

  35. thegreatgabbert says: Dec 6, 2013 7:53 PM

NFL likened it to Troy Polomalu being tackled by his hair. Which is not meant to infer how well hung Davis may or may not be.

Its not just your agility it effects. There’s a lot of hitting and grabbing in football that causes shifts. I know of many people that got the twig and berries smashed or severely pinched from wearing a cup while playing football

  45. kkalama1 says: Dec 6, 2013 10:34 PM

In the interest of avoiding helmet-to-helmet collisions, this should be the only tackling method allowed for sacking the quarterback.
