Wade Phillips to finish season as Texans’ interim head coach

Wade Phillips AP

For the second time this year, Wade Phillips is the interim head coach of the Houston Texans.

With today’s announcement that Gary Kubiak has been fired, Phillips has been promoted from defensive coordinator to interim head coach. Phillips also served as interim head coach while Kubiak took a leave for health reasons following his collapse on the field at halftime of a Sunday night loss to the Colts.

Texans owner Bob McNair said he hopes Phillips can turn the team around, and he made clear that his focus is not on the first pick in the draft.

“Wade Phillips will serve as the interim coach,” McNair said. “We’ve got three more games. Our goal is to win three more games. Some people say that’s not going to be in our interest. Well, believe me, that is in our interest. We want a winning culture and it doesn’t matter whether it’s the first game or the last game.”

And so Phillips will try to win the last three games of the season, after the Texans have lost 11 straight.

He would be a good fit as a head coach for this team.

Mike McCarthy & Wade Phillips have very similar coaching styles

Oops well they have similar eating habits..

Wade Phillips is to blame for some of the Texan’s woes. They reward him with interim Head Coach. Ridiculous. He’s never been a good head coach, you think he’s going to start now?

Thought McNair had more sense then that.

Funny how 1st it was reported that we get a report that schaub might finish out the year.. (the guy who won them how many games over the last couple of years).. then we get a report that the guy who said that has been fired…

Sounds like another suck for luck campaign if I ever heard one.. they are now committed to tanking the rest of the season.

  7. tigersfandan says: Dec 6, 2013 12:34 PM

Including both interim and full-time positions, Wade Phillips has now been the head coach for the Saints, Broncos, Bills, Falcons, Cowboys and Texans! I believe that’s a record!

They should focus on finding a GM that can solve football problems. Otherwise it’s just a waste of time and money with whatever they are doing instead of winning at football.

Thank God I like the real team that plays in Texas, not only because they arent as big a joke as the Texans, but also because we already know how the Wade experiment will work out.

Have fun being terribble Houston. You’re already used to that, though, arent you?

Disregard my post in the last story. Texans have nothing to worry about. They’re a lock for the 1st pick now.

Wade actually has a very good record as a head coach.

I’m not a fan of him being the next Texans head coach but to say he’s not a good coach is just stupid.

I would think this would be an easy turn around for a high profile coach. Get a young mobile qb…solidify the running game which has been your strength…keep that defense intact. Houston could spring right back into contention.

Wonder where all those Texan fans clamoring about the Super Bowl this year went?

  17. tigersfandan says: Dec 6, 2013 12:44 PM

Actually, I believe Phillips had the record even before today. Marty Schottenheimer and Bill Parcells have coached four teams, but six is something else (even if three were as an interim)!

  18. getyourownname says: Dec 6, 2013 12:45 PM

So I guess that’s one less team on Ed Reed’s radar.

  19. aboveaveragejoe11 says: Dec 6, 2013 12:48 PM

Despite the two year aberration, it’s the same ole Texans.

  20. harrisonhits2 says: Dec 6, 2013 12:49 PM

Texans win no more games this year. Phillips isn’t even competent as a defensive coordinator any more, much less an HC

  21. geodude11 says: Dec 6, 2013 12:52 PM

Feel sorry for Wade. No other coach in the history of the NFL has been interem coach as frequently as Wade, seems like a loser every time.

  22. mezanine10 says: Dec 6, 2013 12:54 PM

Upon hearing that he would be the interim head coach, Wade Phillips still had the look of a guy who just walked out to the parking lot to find that his car was stolen…

They went to the same place where the Atlanta fans are.

  24. kastout11 says: Dec 6, 2013 1:20 PM

He is one heck of a defensive coordinator, but not a head coach. I am not a Houston fan, but I would definitely try to convince management that he will not be a successful head coach.

Well Bum’s boy is in charge….We know how that will play out..No Offensive Coordinator (no play calling exp) of any note the offense is sunk like in 2005…Then they’ll screw around with the interview process and after an exhaustive search hire Wade…and in two years fire him and then be forced to start over for real…..The Towel boy from Denver Rick Smith will screwup the draft and with he cap problems he will mismanage FA like he did this year…
All McNair cares about is not being embarrassed and selling stuff…..He probably fired Kubiak because he was pissed he pulled Case and put in Matt in an attempt to win the game….
Dennison is and ex LB/Ol line coach who owes hei job to Kubiak as does the Towel boy…

  27. damcmp says: Dec 6, 2013 1:44 PM

McNair is a joke! Crying two years ago about whether he sould fire Kubiak after they went 6-10 in 2010…….Wade “honeymoon” Phillips fell in his lap…Yahoo…..two more years…..but the Texans never improved….Peyton Manning just went away!!!!! so bye bye Kubiak you probably deserved better, but your loyalty to friends got you stabbed in the back by Smith…..

Yeah, the Cowboys have been a playoff juggernaut. Wait! TJ Yates has as many playoff wins as Romo. So does Schaub.

To all you Texan fans and the like whining about Wade being your head coach….you could do much worse. He has a good record as a head coach and he is the last head coach that got my Bills to the playoffs some ….what is it….14 years ago…….

In the real news, Wade Smith is a bum and so I RG3nout.

That Texas defense is like a sieve so they reward him with interim. What makes McNair think he can handle an entire team. Wade is certainly no Bum!
