Stills doesn’t think Sherman should have been fined for illegal hit

On Monday night, Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman applied a cheap shot to Saints receiver Kenny Stills.

The officials didn’t miss it.  The league office didn’t, either.

According to Katherine Terrell of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, Sherman was fined $7,875 for the blow to Stills.

But Stills had no problem with the hit, and he doesn’t think Sherman should have been fined.

“I don’t think it deserves a fine,” Stills said.  “We had just been talking trash to one another, and I guess he saw an opportunity to take a shot.  It’s football.  You’re going to get hit. . . .  I didn’t take any offense to it.  I think it’s funny.”

But the league didn’t, and the victim of the illegal hit has no say in the discipline.

  1. lol, classy response from a guy who gets what trash talking is all about..oh ok donnymacjack – and I’m sure Stills will see your “good for you!” note. Much appreciated.

Classy response from a guy who “gets it”. Someone who understands what trash talking is all about. Good for you Stills!

Pretty sure it crossed the line from trash talking into an illegal cheap shot if we were watching the same game. Thankfully the league and the officials don’t share your opinion.

  3. I said it before and I’ll say it again, go ahead and call the penalty if you must ,but if the offended player doesn’t agree with the league that there should be a fine, then there should be no fine.

  4. See: Jarius Wright leaving sherman in the rear view mirror.

In garbage time in game the Seahawks won by 3 TDs with Sherman playing on bad hip. That’s all you got?

5 years ago they would have called what Sherman did “playing football”. Good for Stills for saying so.

  5. Bc he shouldn’t have . The Seahawks play to the whistle and push and shove back and forth with wr the whole game .. Most db vs wr matchup a are head games full of trash talk .. It physics the other player out .

The hit was malicious nor was not very hard just a forearm shiver .. It was borderline end of play but on the field
And sent a message that today won’t be easy we won’t lay down or lay off for even a sec. End result drew Bree’s had his worst game and there wr had their worst games of their career . I’d say that was extremely beneficial to enforce their will onto the Saints . That’s Seattle ball yes it’s not always pretty but they are bullies like the glory years of football with the bears shoot even the steelers and ravens of the early 2000’s..

It was blatantly obvious the writers wanted hit and comments titling. Him a cheap
Shot artist when the play was nearly legal or
Questionable is ridiculous… Keep hating they won’t change their play for anyone you win some you lose some ..I commend stills also he took the high road whether he wanted to or not . That’s a man he’ll just remember that and come back for more next time ..

  6. Sherman would do that to Colston I might add it doesn’t matter who you are . He had a certain amount of respect but isn’t afraid of anyone and gives credit where due .but stills is a hyped up rookie after that hit he was off the rest of the game .. It obviously worked. Sherman wouldn’t do it an established vet unless they were jawing back at him . But Colston why not him ? He’s not even a feared wr …

  7. If you think Sherman is only physical with rookies, you’ve never actually watched him. Which, I know most hawk haters haven’t, let alone the Seahawks, it shows in your “trash talk”

  8. Sherman talks the talk and walks the walk…The Saints may find themselves on the outside looking in…The Seahawks are no 1 in the league…Angry fans of opposing teams can’t accept that fact…No team will beat the Seahawks from this point on…No team…

  9. I agree with Stills. The play was on and he took a shot. I can also agree with the ref crew who feels it was necessary to throw a roughness flag. The primary reason it makes sense is he wasn’t a critical part of the play.

All that being said; it shouldn’t have been assessed a fine.

  10. That hit was a cheap shot by definition. Those are the ones that should be fined without question rather than the split-second hits that are iffy. Intent on Sherman’s hit was clear and malicious.

  11. I love that the public hates us. Thanks for the attention. Aiming to be the most hated team in football. No one is dissecting the Texans players or coaches now because they aren’t a threat. We are riding on the emotions of the jealous. What you call hate, we call envy

  12. That is weird, I thought trash talk was a form of speech. I did not know if you hit someone it is a form of trash talk.

  13. I’d like to think that Stills actually believes that, and he might, but part of me wonders if the thought hasn’t crossed his mind that he very well may have to go up there and face Sherman again this year and he doesn’t want to poke the bear, if you know what I mean.

  14. Seahawks used to have respectable players like Shawn Alexander. Now they are glorified roidraging babies.

  15. Welcome to Roger Goodell’s NFL.

Remember in Shrek, when Shrek and Donkey first get to Dulac, the little animatronic song and dance thing they watch with the song about the rules?

    That describes Goodell’s NFL perfectly.

  16. Sherman is a beast on the field. No need for cheap shots but I’ll take a couple 15 yard penalties to be the most feared team in the league. If you watched the playoff game against the skins last year you’ll see why they’re the legion of boom. Those receivers were running scared by the end of the game and that’s a fact.

Yeah you’re right it isn’t because you have a confirmed cheater for a coach or a bunch of confirmed substance abusers/PED users who have no idea when to stop running their mouths on your team. It’s because were all super envious. My team (Detroit) is leading the division and I seem to remember beating you guys last year so envy really has nothing to do with it for me. It’s more like disgust for terrible human beings.

  18. Man I love this, a guy that can trash talk on the field, but doesn’t whine about it like Roddy White. I don’t think he should’ve been fined (According to the rules he should’ve). Wouldn’t be surprised to hear Sherman come out and say something good about Stills haha

  19. Because it wasn’t illegal. Brees was out of the pocket, the ball was in the air. Stills knows the game. Most of the commenters with a grudge against Sherman for going after Brady or shutting down their favorite team’s WR clearly do not.

  20. uptjeff says:

Seahawks fans better hope the Saints don’t come back to Seattle in the playoffs. Justice will be served.

heh.. yeah, that won’t happen. Not this year.

  21. In Other News….

Kenny Stills doesn’t think Dzhokhar Tsarnaev should be punished for the Boston Marathon Bombings.

  22. It was definitely a dumb thing to do and deserved a penalty. But comparing what Sherman did to others that DIDN’T warrant a fine (like the guy who tackled Vernon Davis by his twig and berries), I agree with Stills that there shouldn’t have been a fine.

  23. This is all one author needed to create 2 stories assassinating sherm. Ya it was a little cheap, but as we all knew before hand, there was events that led up to it.

I didnt see many people throwing trent williams under the bus when sherm got pushed in the face with his helmet off. At least sherman did it during a play.

Great journalism noob. Your distaste for certain teams and players has shown through again. Your writing could be considered a bunch of cheap shots.

  24. The Seahawks D-fence is good, but I’m sure their DRUGS are even better…lol!!! Half the team (if not more) is on some kind of drug (and they are getting caught)….. SEACHICKENS will get beat in the playoffs, PERIOD!!! Lmao!!!!

  25. There is too much confidence on Seattle’s side this year.
Me thinks this will not end well for them.
Rarely do teams that dominate all regular season end up winning the Superbowl.

There have only been two #1 seeds in the last 10 years that have won the Superbowl.
    1. 2003 Patriots
    2. 2009 Saints

  26. Perfectly legal play! Quarterback ran out of the pocket, meaning fair game on all DB’s & receivers! Browner did the samething to Jennings last year in Seattle & was flagged. It’s just because when a Seattle player hits you, it looks so nasty!

  27. “Seattle better hope the Saints don’t come back in the playoffs?” Really? I think most of these other teams fans don’t know that the team your rooting for, doesn’t want to play that game! Quit making statements your team can’t handle!

  28. What do u expect from Seahawks fans?.. They would be on here whining like babies if it was the other way around..look at their response to the Tate debacle against GB..they talked themselves in to believing it was a catch

Since you are stuck in the past, what do you think about the Heidi Game or the Holy Roller?

No fine necessary, but it was a pathetic cheap shot on a rookie. Do that to Colston, Sherman, not Stills. Oh wait, you would never.
    **********
    Silly comment.

These guys play professional football. Outside of Deion Sanders, who never met a tackle he didn’t like, CB’s will make tackles, get hit, hit back, etc.

What’s Colston going to do, hit Sherman in the head while he’s wearing a helmet? That’ll show ’em.

Was it a cheap shot? Sure. I, along with you, have seen players do this type of thing throughout the years. It’s not that big of a deal.

Sherman got fined. End of story.

The other thing, if a receiver takes a cheap shot on a defender, especially a CB, who do you think will have an easier time retaliating with a cheap shot? CB’s do not constantly have their heads on a swivel like receives do.

    *******
What justice? Until proven otherwise, the Saints cannot win outdoors in Dec & Jan.

They have yet to get that monkey of their back.

And before anyone chimes in; Seattle is 5-1 on the road this year.

These guys who say Deion never tackled further prove they can’t be a day over age 25.
    *******
I’m well over 25. Deion may have made some tackles, but as Deion has stated, he wasn’t paid to make tackles.

Given the choice, Deion would rather not tackle anyone.

  33. Allidoiswin. You don’t read well do you. Or did you read it. Sure the hit was illegal. It drew a penalty. Stills is classy enough to say no fine is needed. You need to calm down!

  34. Perfectly legal play! Quarterback ran out of the pocket, meaning fair game on all DB’s & receivers! Browner did the samething to Jennings last year in Seattle & was flagged. It’s just because when a Seattle player hits you, it looks so nasty!

I assume you are referring to the period after the Skins QB was hurt. Prior to that injury, the Seachickens were sucking wind at 14-0. AS for Sherman, his best play was his imitation of a punching bag after the game when Trent Williams almost rearranged his face.
