Alshon Jeffery highlight reel TD catch extends Bears halftime lead

AP

Alshon Jeffery has shown a penchant for making difficult, contested catches in becoming a reliable weapon for the Chicago Bears in his second season with the team.

Monday night against the Dallas Cowboys is proving to be no exception.

With 17 seconds left in the first half and the Bears holding a 17-14 lead, Josh McCown took a shot at throwing to a fairly well-covered Jeffery in the end zone. Jeffery was being trailed by cornerback B.W. Webb and had safety Jeff Heath tracking over the top as well.

McCown placed the ball perfectly in the back corner of the end zone but it still required a stellar catch from Jeffery. He leaped above the coverage of Webb to snag the ball out of the sky and managed to get both feet down in the corner of the end zone while falling backward out-of-bounds for a 25-yard touchdown grab.

Jeffery already has five catches for 84 yards and a touchdown against a shaky Bears defense. The touchdown was his third in the last two games after exploding for 249 yards on 12 catches and two scores against the Minnesota Vikings last week.

The touchdown gave Chicago a 24-14 lead at the break with the Bears getting the ball to begin the second half.

  1. That Tony Romo guy needs to quit sucking it and play some better defense. Clearly he is at fault for the Bears being able to pass at will on this lousy D.

Now if his name was Tom Brady then magically the media would be stating reality and saying Dallas’ issue is their defense after they lose this game. Instead it’ll be how Romo can’t win in December. Apparently he will be to blame for McCown having a 300+ yard passing game.

My goodness I hate the media. Such morons.

  3. “Jeffery already has five catches for 84 yards and a touchdown against a shaky Bears defense.”

Really? Who does he play for, again?

  4. This is only years 1 of the Trestman offense and a journeyman backup is leading it.

    Too fat. Too slow. Remember?

He was fat and slow, but to be fair he was pretty awesome back when he was fat and slow too. And having his stats tied to Stephen Garcia. He’d have gone in the first if he was at his current conditioning level.

We have nine. Thanks for asking.

  9. The cowboys have the worst defense I have ever seen. Why do they continue to get attention all of the time. Just stop wasting everyones time

Cowboys stink. NFL loves to hype big market teams that are mediocre at best

  10. Giantsfanlewis…..EXACTLY. Don’t like ignorant fans who ignore the true history of football. In modern terms, the Steelers are successful. But in all of football, they are aways back of all time.

  11. As a Bears fan, I’m ok if Cutler needs to take the rest of the season off to get healthy. McCown is outplaying Cutler by a country mile. I can’t remember enjoying watching the Bears offense like I do this year. Probably not since ’85.

If only the defense didn’t suck this year.

  12. My fellow cowboys fans aren’t going to like this, but this what we are in for as long as jerry won’t relinquish power. When we won world titles we had a large o-line, an aggressive defensive line, and the owner stayed out of Jimmy’s way. When that changed we managed to use Jimmy’s team for one more run, but after that, nothing. Jerry is obsessed with skill position players because drafting linemen high isn’t “sexy”. When he finally takes a lineman, he trades down and manages to still overreach for a center that could have been had later. Football is won in the trenches. Other perennial organizations (see Kraft/Patriots) have owners who know that they are a great asset at marketing their team, but not in making all football decisions unchecked. For all the publicity and the great stadium (Jerry is excellent at marketing the team) he is a liability in all aspects concerning personnel. The only way this will change is if Jerry checks his ego and finally hires a coach/GM who will stand up and tell him “No, we aren’t doing that, that’s stupid”. Garrett is not that guy, because he feels like he owes Jerry the world for giving him the O-coord job and then HC. But he and this staff are incompetent. Case and point, Dallas is now down 21-42 because for some inexplicable reason, a decision was made to shelve the run game. But hey, at least the Cowboys aren’t the Jags, Redskins, or Jets. Right? We are just sliding a little closer every day…

Ya i bet it’s always someone elses fault that Romo never wins in December and only has 1 playoff win. During the fumble snap in Seattle it was probably the kickers fault.

Steelers fan logic is that the NFL did not exist until 1974 when they won their first Super Bowl. All players and teams beforehand weren’t really playing professional football. Thus All-Time greats like Bart Starr, Johnny Unitas, Gale Sayers, Jim Brown, Chuck Bednarik, Sam Huff, … don’t matter. Same goes for Cowboy fans that tout their Super Bowls in ignorance of the fact that they don’t come close to the Pack, Bears, Browns or Giants. One question for Steeler and Cowboy fans that only believe the NFL started with the Super Bowl: Where do you think the coaches responsible for your teams greatest successes learned their trade? In the pre-Super Bowl NFL. Chuck Noll with the great Browns teams of the 50s and Landry with the great Giants teams of the 50s.

  15. in 40 years its the first time i can really say im a shame of the cowboys 1-15 year 8-8 years were bad but to continue to not show up on defense on game that could push you over being mediocrity is pathetic dont want to here about injuries all teams have them bears where worst cowboys laid a big turd tonight and dont deserve to make the playoffs

maybe they don’t call Tom Brady out, because he has actually won games in December and January

Yeah and I guess its Dallas’ defense’s fault Romo only had 11 completions for 104 yards. That’s really doing enough to lead your team to victory in the NFL, especially when you have a $100 million contract.

  18. Halarious loss…over paid and a bunch of underachievers !

It’s time to clean house, especially on defense!

  19. “dubblelznhell says: Dec 9, 2013 10:51 PM The browns have 10 NFL championships. Not afl championships.”

Sir I believe it was a typo and Mr. Giantsfan meant AAFL, the All American Football Conference. I believe the Browns won the title every year that league existed.

  20. Thanks again for Jenkins Baalke. Perhaps this year(since you only have 2 wr’s under contract) you can take a WR with actual production and talent that fits the team identity. You know kinda like Jeffery who you whiffed on by passing over him. Alshon is a beast and I had that one pegged long before the draft. Chicago got a steal

  21. I guess Dizzy Bryant is upset he is not getting any love. Last night belonged to A Jeffrey. Can Dizzy do what Jeffrey did last night? Good job to da Bears for stomping those girls….

“Shaky defense”? Hey Curtis Crabtree, can you tell me the defense that existed in the history of the NFL where Alshon Jeffrey wouldn’t have made that catch? I can only think of two guys that could have stopped him: Charles Woodson, who would have repeatedly hit him in the groin as he was going up for the ball, and Jack Tatum who would have broke his spinal cord.

I can’t believe this comment got so many thumbs up. Losing Peppers would be like not having Urlacher this year: the D would go from good to bad to the worst. Peppers is still a beast, and guess what? He looks best when the much maligned Shea McClellin is playing. “Let’s take what’s working best for us and dismantle it” is never the right answer. Maybe a team full of Jonathan Bostics will help? LOL.

  24. “That Tony Romo guy needs to quit sucking it and play some better defense. Clearly he is at fault for the Bears being able to pass at will on this lousy D.”

The defense sucking and Romo and his 104 yards sucking aren’t mutually exclusive. Dallas has had top-10 overall defenses multiple times in Romo’s career and he doesn’t have jack to show for it.

  25. All my buddies in my fantasy league were laughing at me whene I drafted Brandon Marshall and Alshon and I play both of them every week. Its 2RB 3WR league; their the reason Im in first place

  26. Not a Cowboy’s fan by any stretch, but Romo gets far too much of the blame. This Cowboy’s team isn’t better than average, and their D is worse than the Bear’s, if that’s possible this year.

“This is only years 1 of the Trestman offense and a journeyman backup is leading it.

I’m gonna miss Peanut. Class act, great guy, and helluva DB. Pepp’s been solid, but Chuck has been here from the start. Solid dude all the way around.
