Steelers lament latest near-miss of a loss

Antonio Brown, Chris Clemons AP

For all the frantic finishes yesterday, the Steelers might have topped them all, if Antonio Brown’s left foot hadn’t been just out of bounds.

The wide receiver’s foot on the line killed a five-lateral play that passed through six sets of hands with no time left on the clock, what would have set up a game-winning extra point against the Dolphins.

I thought I had it clean,” Brown said, via Mark Kaboly of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “I thought I separated really well getting to the sidelines, but it didn’t seem quite enough.”

It was close, however.

On their own 21-yard line with three seconds left on the clock, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger passed to Emmanuel Sanders at their 46, and the fun began.

Sanders tossed it to Jerricho Cotchery, who then gave it to Le’Veon Bell. Bell pitched it to tackle Marcus Gilbert, who had the good sense to get it back to Roethlisberger. After a few yards, the quarterback chunked it back to Brown, who had space.

Brown made Dolphins safety Reshad Jones miss, and appeared to be clear of Chris Clemons, but his left foot hit the white line around the 12-yard line.

What he really could have used was coach Mike Tomlin standing there to force him inside.

Instead, the Steelers were left to lament their eighth loss of the season, caused by a pile of problems bigger than Brown’s left foot.

“When you put yourself in a position where you are banking on Marcus Gilbert handling the ball for you to win the game,” safety Ryan Clark said. “That means you haven’t done what you were supposed to do earlier.”

It’s a familiar refrain for the year, and one they can think about in what’s almost certain to be an offseason that begins in three weeks.

Roethlisberger was awfully close to a forward lateral, and it likely was. I like your version better, though. It’s much more dramatic.

  5. themiamidolphins says: Dec 9, 2013 9:53 AM

It was a forward lateral by Roethlisberger, but thankfully it never came to that. Who knows what these awful NFL referees would have done in that situation.

I nearly had a heart attack watching that. I don’t know what I would have done if the Steelers score.
The Dolphins have to be a lot more prepared for that. That was awful tackling and bad angles. Terrible. At least there’s the sideline.

  6. trojanmaaaan says: Dec 9, 2013 9:54 AM

Wouldn’t have mattered. Big Ben threw an illegal forward pass.

  7. peytonwantsaflag says: Dec 9, 2013 9:57 AM

with all the legitimate excitement yesterday, and all the GOOD football that was played why are we writing about this nonsense? Had he not stepped out of bounds (which he clearly did, it wasn’t a difficult call by the official) it certainly would’ve bee overturned on replay because of Ben’s illegal forward lateral.

The Steeler’s are toast – let’s treat them as such.

  8. keithackers says: Dec 9, 2013 9:57 AM

At least Emmanuel Sanders got to do some more dancing.

  9. mksnpcola says: Dec 9, 2013 9:58 AM

Am I the only one who saw that Big Ben’s lateral was actually a forward pass? As soon as it happened I was calling it (from the comfort of my 72 degree home in Florida). I wonder that if all scoring plays are reviewed, and if there had not been the step out of bounds, would the review have caught the forward pass? Glad to get out of Pittsburgh win any win. Go Fins!

  11. jason8er says: Dec 9, 2013 9:59 AM

Roethlisberger did not “chunk it back to Brown”. It was an obvious forward lateral, by 2 or 3 yards easy. That play was coming back even if Brown had stayed inbounds.

  13. lafriedman says: Dec 9, 2013 10:01 AM

Is everyone missing the fact that Roethlisberger did not throw a legal lateral on the play? His “lateral” went 1-2 yards forward. Even if Brown didn’t step out of bounds, the play likely would have been reversed on replay, which would certainly have happened as it was a scoring play.

  14. steelnucs says: Dec 9, 2013 10:02 AM

Clark is spot-on with his quote.

Despite his pick-6, Polamalu’s missed tackles are surely part of what Clark is talking about. Pathetic. D looked horrible much of the day. DBs giving even Wallace a 10-12 yard cushion in the snow? WTH? The sooner their season is over the better.

  15. takeittothehizzy says: Dec 9, 2013 10:03 AM

It’s amazing to me how much a play that involved an illegal forward pass is getting so much play. Brown should be thrilled that he got the extra yards added to his stats because had he scored the play would have been reviewed and overturned and his stats would not have counted.

  16. godofwine330 says: Dec 9, 2013 10:03 AM

It might be a stretch, but it could also be fair to suggest that karma was alive and well in that game. Tomlin got his $100,000.00 fine for his totally bush league actions on Thanksgiving, but life does have a way of serving up paybacks of its own. And this has all the makings of just such a karmic payback. In either case, the Steelers are done. For the second year in a row.

So much for adding a link – my previous post was removed.
All I have to say is Darin Gantt – watch the play again – and see where Ben Ben gets the ball, runs forward and throws a lateral from the 32 yd. line and where Brown catches the alleged lateral at the 34…

Makes that step out of bounds not so important…

  22. pooflingingmonkey says: Dec 9, 2013 10:11 AM

They had the game in the bag, it was theirs to lose.

    ..and they lost.

  26. holeinone09 says: Dec 9, 2013 10:22 AM

The defense lost this game, plain and simple. Gave up too many big plays again, couldn’t hold the lead, sloppy tackling, DB’s giving too much space between receivers (how can you play off a WR by 10 yards from inside the 20?).

The other thing that bugged me was the lack of using Bell to run more when they had the lead late in the game.

This loss and the one last week were kind of bitter, after all the injuries and everything else they overcame this year. So close and yet so far. I will still be watching however.

  32. pmac26 says: Dec 9, 2013 10:42 AM

If Brown hadn’t stepped out at the 12 yard line the TD would have counted, there was no flag on the play for an illegal forward pass and penalty’s are not reviewable.

  33. fedupincleveland says: Dec 9, 2013 10:51 AM

That’s not correct Pmac. Forward lateral stops the play, and most definitely would have been reviewed. It has happened many times, even on non-scoring plays.

  34. crownofthehelmet says: Dec 9, 2013 10:52 AM

pmac26, you’re the lone voice of reason. If the refs did not throw the flag for illegal forward pass (which they didn’t), the booth cannot go back and change it to a penalty. If Brown would have stayed in, it would have counted.

As a long-time Steelers fan, I know I should not wish this but please, please, Steelers, lose out the rest of the season so you can maximize your draft position and draft some new defensive players. They need to say goodbye to Clark, Taylor, fat Woodley, Keisel and maybe even Troy in the off-season and rebuild it. The number of huge plays this defense has given up this year is horrible. They should be embarasssed.

  45. citizenstrange says: Dec 9, 2013 11:41 AM

Roethlisberger and his playground ball are consistently in the bottom third of the league in scoring offense. Yesterday he got more or less his average 21 points. He cannot score points. He cannot carry a team. He cannot win shootouts more than once every five years. When the defense is no longer good enough to carry him on its back and hand him six or seven 13-9 wins each season this is what happens.

Bottom Third Ben’s contract runs through 2015. Twelfth Man Tomlin’s contract runs through 2016. No more playoffs for the Steelers until at least 2017

But now that the tide has turned, every Ravens win is somehow aided by the refs. Joe Flacco throws nothing but jump balls. (BTW- did you actually watch the refs hand the Steelers the Super Bowl against the Seahawks? I know you didn’t watch the Ravens game.)
