Big Ben is riled up, again

Like Peyton Manning, there’s a chance Ben Roethlisberger is happy only when he’s unhappy about something.

Last month, reports that the Steelers quarterback possibly wants out of Pittsburgh pissed Ben off — and sparked a winning streak.  Now that the Steelers have lost a pair of winnable games in a row, Ben is upset about something else.

He doesn’t like the perception that he took a shot at offensive coordinator Todd Haley after Sunday’s loss to the Dolphins.

It’s unbelievable,” Roethlisberger told 93.7 The Fan in Pittsburgh, via ESPN.com.  “It gets blown up and it’s by reporters that come in there and ask the dumbest questions after a game, and it makes it ridiculous when they only take part of your answer.

“It was taken way out of context.  There is absolutely no issue between Coach Haley and I.  I love where this offense is right now.”

As we’ve explained once or twice (or 50 times), there’s a huge difference between taking a quote out of context and isolating a quote.  Isolating a quote in a way that doesn’t give it a different meaning when lifted out of its context is fair.

Here’s what Roethlisberger said that created the sense problems linger, via Adita Kinkhabwala of NFL Network, when asked about why the team got away from the running game in the second half against the Dolphins:  “No idea.  Coach Haley’s over there.  You can ask him.”

Roethlisberger now says that the suggestion to pose the question to Coach Haley wasn’t intended to be a reflection on the man to whom Roethlisberger referred reporters.

“They take one little blurb of a whole sentence and it was not directed at Coach Haley, like ‘Go ask him, I don’t know why we didn’t do it,'” Roethlisberger said  Tuesday.  “It was, ‘He’s our coordinator, if you want to ask questions about play calling, go ask him about it.  He’s the guy that calls the plays.  If you want to ask me about the no-huddle and I’m calling [plays], then you can ask me.'”

That extra context isn’t doing much to change our own perception that Roethlisberger’s answer reflected frustration with Haley’s play calling.  Otherwise, Ben would have shared some of the nuggets he has picked up during the past two years of working directly with Haley to help explain why the offense did what it did in that situation.  Or maybe Ben would have provided some of the insights he acquired while talking to Haley during, you know, the game.

“[I]n no way shape or form was the [comment] directed negatively at him,” Roethlisberger insisted.  “I think the offense is as good as it’s been in a long time.  We’ve got guys doing some great things.  I genuinely am enjoying this offense and what Coach Haley is doing and where we’re going.  We’re getting [better] every week, and I think we can keep getting better.”

That doesn’t explain why Roethlisberger also reportedly declined to answer the question of whether he thinks changes need to be made on offense.

Maybe the media was unfairly taking his non-answer out of context, too.

  1. If there is one thing that i’ve learned in my years of being a Vikings fan… It’s that the Vikings are totally inept and will never actually win a super bowl.

  2. I used to think the Big Ben and Todd Haley media stuff was not a reflection on Mike Tomlin but after he showed his ass on national tv I have no doubt the head coach is the problem with this team. Sad to see this once proud franchise reduced to what you’d expect from the Jets.

  3. Fascinating to play this out 2 ways. One where PIT slips into the playoffs and wins the SB, and one where they lose every other game. This story could end with Ben getting a huge pay raise, or traded out of desperation.

Although I think they should have already traded him, but that’s just me, I like value QBs with utilization value PLUS exit strategy options. Ben will provide neither of those if they give him a big new deal. I hope they do though cause I don’t want PIT to be relevant for a very long time, so I’m hoping they keep Ben and Tomlin, that way I know they won’t be a threat to the more respectable teams that deserve a chance for some glory in lieu of them.

What a mess. But what a privilege to watch it unfold from it’s creation point. We are all so lucky to be living as football fans at this time.

  4. It’s sad watching the crumbling of such a storied franchise…oh, did I say sad?? I meant “funny”

  5. so just to get this straight…referring questions about play calling to the play caller who makes decisions on what plays will be called is a sign of friction and malcontent? priceless….and/or shameless pot stirring by the media

  6. can u say KARMA?? The REAL punishment for Tomlin stepping 1 INCH on the field and ruining Jacoby Jones’s return wasn’t the $100,000.

It was having the game against the Dolphins taken from him by that same 1 INCH on Antonio Browns touchdown run.

That 1 INCH could very well ruin Pitts ENTIRE playoff picture/ possible super bowl

And you still think the Failskins still have a shot at the playoffs.

Give us your top 5 receivers in the game again please. I know you will put Moss and Garcon on that list. #ustillsuck

  8. I believe him – but we must remember history tells us this is a man in which it could be said doesn’t always grasp the full meaning of words (ie – NO)

  9. Ben:

There’s an old adage that says, ” Don’t get into a pissing contest with those who buy their ink by the barrel.”

You’d be wise to learn that lesson.

  10. That time of year again when the Steelers fans go from talking football to talking trophy cases.

Haha Steelers fans are funny. Everyone knows you will be upset watching playoff football, not rooting for your own. Don’t try to stir our attention away from the failures the Steelers brought the NFL and their franchise this season with your trophy case talk…not being in the playoffs HURTS DEEP INSIDE.

  11. So let me isolate this quote “…As we’ve explained once or twice (or 50 times)…”

You are saying we are stupid?

    LOL

  12. holy hell. this story seems like a bit of a stretch. hard to give big ben a pass because he is an idiot….but didn’t sound to me like he said anything negative or wrong?

  13. Haley has announced that he realizes that Ben needs some autonomy. He will now be allowed to audible out of the run on a 4-3 defense with 8 in the box.

  14. Did anyone see that Onion article about how people living in Pittsburgh are terrifed to learn that Roaethaephtisberger considers it his home?

    5-8.

  15. Ben is a lion. But at 5 and 8 if your coming back it must be from the pawn shop from dropping those rings off.

  16. My life as a steeler fan I got to root for them in the playoffs more often then not, got to root for them in 3 SBs, got to see them win 2. I am fine with them missing the playoffs cause it’s never long till u get to do it again unlike some teams. Steelers have list as many or more SB then mist teams have won or even been to. Might be jumping on the saints bandwagon cone playoff time.

  17. actually, I believe him. I started coming up with a reason for why he said that, and it led right to him only calling plays in no huddle, and haley calls the rest so go ahead and ask him.

On this one, I think ben MAY have been a bit annoyed, but I really do think he wasn’t throwing haley under the bus there. he was simply stating they must ask the man who called the play what he was thinking there

  18. .

It appears as though the interview took place soon after very tough home loss to Miami. At that point he may have wanted to avoid a media inspired, Haley vs BR play calling controversy.

In Pittsburgh it’s known as ” the trap play”.

    .

  19. If Mike Tomlin was so undisciplined that he couldn’t control himself from stepping into the playing field, what kind of ‘control’ does he have of his team? Answer: 5-8

  20. This is what happens when you hitch your wagon to an inferior QB instead of hitching it to a star.

    #Romo

  21. Isolating a quote might not be taking it out of the context but it allows the writer to create their own context. His quote was spoken literally and so many times we are used to figurative finger pointing. So the quote may not have been taken out of context but that does not mean it was accurately describing what he meant.

RG3 is not even a top 4 QB in last years draft.

  23. Only when Pittsburgh has news does the sports world go crazy. ben will never get the credit he deserves, always the negative rants. he only went to three Super Bowls and one two. One with a two minute drive to win the championship, if that had been Brady or Manning there would have been a ticker tape parade. For saying this I know I’ll be fined by the all mighty Gödel.

  24. Meh…. Sounds more to me like Ben was frustrated with the loss and gave a reporter a wise-ass answer to a really dumb question. I don’t read that as a jab to Haley.

  25. Latest news I heard was the Pouncey brothers were trying to make it so they could play on the same team again .. in Florida like in college. Haven’t heard the sports world go crazy on that at all. Not that big a story I guess.

  26. The man is a career liar…and a rapist…and a pig in general! But he IS a damn good QB. Ditch Haley, inject some youth into that franchise, and the Steelers will be relevant again. I’m on the fence with Tomlin though. He really poo poo’d in his own nest with that little stunt against the Ravens. One less youth injection for next year! Not to mention his wallet being 100k lighter. A Bill Cowher he’ll never be!

  27. Funny Tomlin picked the wrong game to stroll the sideline. If he did it this past week his guy might have stayed in bounds trying to avoid him.

  28. After watching Ben and the Steelers get worse and finally sink into mediocrity, and watching the Colts have such a great year then blah this year and watching Arizona have a very good year– It seems to me that Bruce Arians deserves a lot more credit than he gets.

  29. If he answers the question honestly and says why he thinks they moved away from the run, then he’s talking out of turn and it is a shot at Haley and/or the running backs. If he directs questions about play calling to the play caller, then he is pointing fingers and disgruntled. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

  30. It will be interesting to see going forward if Tomlin and company can right this listing ship, or will it have to be blown up and rebuilt from the ground up?

These last two seasons have not been very good and I see no reason at present to believe next year will be any better.

This team got old and at many positions there doesn’t seem to be anyone waiting in the wings.

  31. ” Isolating a quote in a way that doesn’t give it a different meaning when lifted out of its context is fair.”
You mean much like the German propaganda machine in WW2?

  32. Ben and Haley never did seem to be a great idea. Ben’s a better QB than what his team is playing like now and i think he will improve with a better offensive coordinator and better offensive talent around him (both on the line and at WR). as for Haley, i wont be shocked if he’s let go IF him and Ben dont get along.

  33. The proper answer Ben should have given was ” We stopped running the ball because Todd thought so much of my passing ability.” You’ve got to learn to spin things in a positive way Ben.

I venture to guess that the 20 thumbs-up were from Redskins, Packers, Lions and Bengals fans..

  35. I remember reading responses to articles four or five years ago on PFT … when there were people that would actually discuss the article and associated story and not just say troll garbage.

  36. Otherwise, Ben would have shared some of the nuggets he has picked up during the past two years of working directly with Haley to help explain why the offense did what it did in that situation. Or maybe Ben would have provided some of the insights he acquired while talking to Haley during, you know, the game.

    ———————————————–
Haley’s doesn’t strike me as a guy who dispenses many nuggets of wisdom. And I doubt Mr. Personality was passing along insights into his coaching choices during, you know, the game.

I’m on record as saying Ben often aggravates me to death, but Haley doesn’t get along with anyone … not his receivers in Arizona, not his bosses in KC, not the folks who kennel his dogs, not the people whose homes he rents. Was thrilled with the hire because I wanted a more balanced run/pass attack. But this guy clearly can’t work with our offense–not just our quarterback. Hammering Ben about any dysfunction in their relationship isn’t productive. It’s time to make a change in the coaching staff.

  37. It’s okay if he misused the phrase “out of context.”

There are plenty of people who misuse the word “irony” and mispronounce “nuclear.”

  38. I am by no means a Stillers fan….but trashing Tomlin is not the way to go …..He gets the most out of a hand full of great players and a plethora of marginal ones…only hit against him really is hiring Haley

  39. I don’t like this alleged scoundrel QB, but he has a good point.
Don’t ask him about why more runs were not called when he’s not calling the plays.

  40. Or maybe, for once, Ben is actually right here. The media (in general) always cherry picks to support their argument.

“The extra context isn’t doing much to change our own perception that Roethlisberger’s answer reflected frustration with Haley’s play calling.”

Right. It’s your interpretation. Others could have perceived his response as exactly what he stated “He’s our coordinator, if you want to ask questions about play calling, go ask him about it.” He even went on to say “If you want to ask me about the no-huddle and I’m calling [plays], then you can ask me.”

I’d say it’s easy to distinguish the difference. My guess is if you had questions about the defensive play-calling, you’d ask LeBeau.. not Woodley or Timmons.

Really lame attempt at trying to make something out of nothing.

Mexxx, RGIII would be the third best QB from his draft class. It would go IMO
    1. Wilson
    2. Luck
    3. RGIII
    T-4. Foles
    T-4. Tannehill
    6. Weedon

    ———————–
right now i think i would put Foles and Tannehill above Griffin

Griffin might not be the best QB on his own team right now.

  42. Ben will get healthy in GB in a couple weeks tossing 4 TD’s and promissing more next season. Everyone will get healthy beating up on GB the rest of the year.
Don’t plan on a Bears Packers flex game in week 17. The Pack will be out of it by then. The game meaningless. Maybe for both teams if the Lions win out. Hey the bears can play the scrubs and give them a chance and the Packers who only have scrubs can see if they would like to start playing too. LOL

  43. I’m a Bengals fan so I have no love for the Steelers but I cringe at the thought that nobody on the Bengals will be able to cover Antonio Brown on Sunday night. Dude is going to have a huge game.

  44. Spoken like the head r8pist of a CHEATING organization lead by Mike Tomcheat. $100,000 fine and draft picks coming Steeler fans.

  45. “I love where this offense is right now.”

That’s funny, the Ravens, Bengals, Browns, and Packers’ defenses are all saying the same thing.

  46. Congratulations to ‘Mouthpiece Mike’ for his wonderful performance this season. From his infamous $100 thousand sideline performance to his brilliant QB ‘keeper’ on a 4th and 10 from his own 10 yard line…….brilliant Mike, just brilliant! Time for the Rooneys to move-on with a new HC and some new assistants. Haley for sure needs a new home, hopefully at some nearby high school and the great Dick LeBeau really should retire while he has some remaining respect in the league. His defensive tactics have been great but have been figured out and thwarted years ago. We love you Dick but time to go home Bud! As for ‘Mouthpiece Mike’…..well, this clown should be cutting grass, shoveling dung, or waiting tables at the local McDonalds!

  47. Newlydead, as if right now that’s where I stand. I suspect the eagles take the division and files will move to 3, Tannethrill to 4 and RGIII to 5. I am judging purely on team success and RGIII has a division title under his belt. It’s also hard to put Folrs ahead of RGIII due to the fact he doesn’t have a full season under his belt. Look at Kaep, outstanding in his partial season, struggled this year.

  48. patriotinvasion……how did that $750,000 fine Belichick received work out for him? And the team fine of $250,000? And the loss of a first round draft pick? All for cheating.

    ____

All worth humiliating the Steelers in Heinz Field in not 1 but 2 AFC Championship Games. Lol. Belichick filmed hand signals in plain view to every person in the stadium that any assistant coach could jot down on a pad of paper. He never tried to tackle a guy returning a kick to alter a playoff race. Now that is CHEATING!

  56. Wow, how about he was suggesting he didn’t want to speak for someone else? Immediately assuming and insinuating it was a negative comment isn’t really that fair in my opinion.

Ben was asked why they got away from running the ball….he wasn’t the one calling plays so he probably honestly doesn’t know Haley’s reasoning and doesn’t want to speculate.

  57. As a Bengal Fan (Insert stupid 90’s joke here) I do not want to see any passion out of Ben I know Sunday night will be a tough , tough game and hope to get out of the Steel City with a W but… I enjoy watching all of the childish crap you trolls talk. First off the Stillers are the best run franchise in the NFL (except maybe for hiring T. Haley) and I have alot of respect (and envy) for the franchise. 59. I heard the interview when it happened and thought to myself…”They’re losing and the animosity returns.” He always tries to blame the media and sugarcoat things that he has said. He also made a comment on 93.7 at the beginning of the year about Bell. When he said it, I again thought that he was indirectly insulting Bell. Perhaps it’s not the media, perhaps it is, Ben (as I tell my children), not WHAT you said, but THE WAY you said it. Then again, maybe it IS what you said…

  69. Big Ben has right to be riled up after how the media trys to twist words around to create team drama. Its pretty much like this article. They can try and cause drama while interviewing Big Ben and the team but they won’t succeed. These players are too smart for that.

  70. patriotinvasion, you need to take a long hard look at your team. Several players popped for PED’s and Spygate. Your rings are tainted and always will be. Hilarious, a Patriot fan accusing another team of cheating. Funny and sad at the same time.
