Cowboys closing in on Saints’ record for yards allowed

AP

Last year the Saints set a new NFL record by allowing 7,042 total yards over the course of the season, a pathetic defensive performance that resulted in New Orleans making wholesale changes on defense, including hiring coordinator Rob Ryan, who had just been fired by the Cowboys.

This year, Ryan has turned the Saints’ defense around. But his old team is threatening to break his new team’s dubious record.

After last night’s pathetic performance in a loss to the Bears, the Cowboys’ defense has allowed 3,880 passing yards and 1,669 rushing yards for a total of 5,549 yards on the season. That means if the Cowboys allow 1,494 yards over the final three games, they’ll break the record. That works out to 498 yards a game, and last night the Cowboys allowed 497 yards to the Bears.

New Cowboys defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin is taking a lot of the blame in Dallas, as he should. There was a time when Kiffin was among the most respected defensive coordinators in football, but that was a long time ago. Kiffin was an utter failure as a defensive coordinator while working for his son, Lane Kiffin, at USC, and he’s been a failure this year in Dallas. It would be a shame for Kiffin to end a fine career by coordinating a defense that sets an all-time record for yards allowed, but he’s heading in that direction.

  1. Dallas is doomed until this skeleton of an owner leaves this earth…for allowing this goofy, old owner to constantly become the focus of attention after the game is hilarious. I can’t remember the last time I seen Garrett interviewed, yet reporters wants to hear what this poor owner has to say about his defense that couldn’t defend the local youth footballs team offense.

  2. Romo’s fault!!!

Monte’s time in the NFL was done years ago. The guy is probably simply too old to adapt to the way the NFL is now. Amusing Jones would go and hire him.

  3. Yeah, really looks like Rob Ryan was the problem with the Dallas defense. Glad you got that sorted out, Jerry.

  4. Talk about a mess on defense. The worst part is that the Cowboys are going to be $31M over the cap next year, more than double that of the next closest team (Saints @ $13M over), allowing them little wiggle-room in the FA market, if any, to replace this horrendous D. Better hope for a great draft. And new coaching. And new GM. And…

  5. Looking at the mess that is the Cowboys defense, you have to point the finger at the GM. it’s clearly his fault.

    Right, Jerrah?

  6. Exactly what I was thinking, alewatcher! It should be a big wakeup call for the morons in Dallas, but I don’t expect any changes until Rony Tomo wins a Super Bowl. In other words, never.
Even though my boys are already out of it, I still get a charge out of seeing the Cowgirls fail over and over.
    America’s team. LOL.

  7. How’s that firing of Rob Ryan working out?

When you allow a team to score on every drive, you’re going to lose. Disgustingly bad defense. The way Philly is playing there’s no way they wont roll over Dallas. And if Rodgers comes back next week it wont matter, because Dallas will probably end up being 2 games back when week 17 arrives.

Sickening. Garrett, Kiffin Callahan, and most importantl Jerry all need to go.

What a pathetic excuse for a franchise the last 18 years.

  8. .

Would Cowboys fans do a Jones, Garrett and Romo for Kraft, Belichick and Brady deal?

No ? what if the Patriots threw in a 3rd rounder?

    .

  9. No other team has allowed 490 yards twice this year, Cowboys have done it 5 times. Twice, the Cowboys have allowed the opposing offense to score on every drive in the game this year. No other team has done this since 1981.

It blows my mind how Monte Kiffin is still employed. For the love of everything that is holy Jerry, please terminate this man and call Rob Ryan to apologize.

    That is all.

    Sincerely,
    Cowboy Fans

  10. This was a sham. Alshon Jeffery pushed off at the end of the half. Terrible call on a pick that swung momentum. Countless holds by the Bears o-line, push-offs by their WR’s and defensive holds. Ridiculous roughing the QB calls.

Chicago has been a corrupt town since Al Capone and prohibition and its obvious last night they paid the officiating crew to allow Chicago to win. No one wants to see Jerry and company succeeed and fulfill America’s destiny.

  11. WOW, that was as a big a disgrace defensively I’ve seen in many a year coming from a PLAYOFF contender! If the Eagles don’t have the NFC East locked before the game on the 29th, the Eagles offence is going to lambaste that Cowboys D for the Division title…EAGLES!!!!

  12. What does all of this prove? That the Giants are the worst team in the NFL. How can you be in a division with two PROVEN knucklehead franchises (Dallas and Washington) and a rookie head coach (Philly) and start out 0-6 and not win your division? People ought to remember this year when the Eli Manning or Tom Coughlin HOF debates begin early next decade.

Dude, stop living in the 90’s and face reality, your team stinks! Worst defense, some of the worst coaches and worst GM in the league. Really?Blaming the officials for this beat down? Your right about one thing though, love to see Dallas fail. And it’s not because I hate the cowboys. It’s the fans like you and that smug owner that I hate.

  14. Jenny said there will be some changes. First of all he need to start with himself x2. (Owner, President & GM) no wonder he looks as if he is about to crack with that wrinkle face. Can’t no one man hold those many positions. Dallas Cowgirls fans are diluted with denial. The 90’s are 86’d and there will be no new era coming to Dallas anytime soon.

  15. “I can’t remember the last time I seen Garrett interviewed, yet reporters wants to hear what this poor owner has to say about his defense that couldn’t defend the local youth footballs team offense.”

Who would anyone care what a puppet has to say? Might as well talk directly to the puppetmaster.

I have two words for you – Stephen Jones…

Sadly, Stephen actually knows less about football that his father. Our only hope is that Stephen will be smart enough to hire a real GM…

  17. I have always been a Cowboys fan. Even when they have a losing season. When the Cowboys went 1 and 15 when Troy was a rookie, I still pulled for the Cowboys. Then we won the Super Bowl and Jerry Jones got jealous that Jimmy Johnson was getting all the credit for winning so he made Jimmy leave so he could start being the one that gets all the credit. He only hires coaches that will let him use them so he can make all the decisions ! Well we see how that worked out, The Cowboys are always falling short. No motivation and always loosing the games that they should win. Jerry PLEASE hire a coach with some balls that will give this team some structure and will hold the players accountable! Let the head coach do the drafting so we can bring in some great players and get the Dallas Cowboys back on top like they once were. Only you Jerry have the power to do this! You are the reason the Cowboys are in this position. Please for your team and all of us Cowboys fans, DO THE RIGHT THING… signed very concerned fan…..

  18. It begs the question, how much of Kiffin’s success is owed to Tony Dungy. He has never been anything special as a coordinator before or since running the system that Dungy oversaw implementation of in Tampa. Even there, as the core of that team went away, the defense was falling apart as he wasn’t acclimating new parts to the system. It was the main reason Jon Gruden got fired when he did as that defense collapsed in December of 2008.

  19. As a Saints fan I can proudly say that our team has many NFL records (Thanks to Sean Payton and Drew Brees), but the worst defense in history last year is one I’ll be happy to let the Cowboys break. Actually I almost feel sorry for their once proud fan base ( I said almost).

Riddle me this: Last year the the Cowboys had Rob Ryan as their DC. Jerrah fired him saying he was the problem when their defense was credible. This year, he is in New Orleans and their defense when from worst in history to about 6th in the league with the Saints sitting on a 10-3 record and possibly a 2nd seed in the playoffs.

The Cowboys , on the other hand, are getting their bell rung more than a dockside bordello next to a Navy shipyard.

Thank you Jerrah for that gift. We’re hoping it carries us extremely far in the playoffs.

    ============================================
The problem is not the coach, it’s the Al Davis clone who doesn’t ALLOW his coach to hold the players accountable. The players know they can just go over the coach’s head to the GM/ owner.

That said, what the Kiffins have done couldn’t have happened to more more deserving football programs in America: the Cowboys and U$C.

  21. That was a brutal game to watch. Chicago scored every possession until they knelt down to end it.

Jerry, in his scratchy and tired little old man voice, said that next week would be different because there will be changes. Changes like…personnel, or D-Coordinator, or like giving up on the pathetically outdated Tampa two defense in week 15, or like asking your offense to score more than 45 points so you have a chance to win?

Every team has injuries, those with a decent GM have enough depth to compete. There is only one change that will help Dallas, although even a legit GM would be too late for this year.

  22. I’ve been a Cowboys fan for 43 years!!!
I’ve had it with our “GM”/Owner. No self-respecting coach will touch this franchise until that fool is gone. You would think that such a smart man would know his limitations and his limitations is running an NFL franchise.
The only way to hurt this fool is not support his franchise.

    I’m done!!

“How many times does Jerry have to prove to the world he knows nothing about football?”

roughly 17 times a season!!! And I’m a Cowboys fan.

He’s the dumbest smart guy I know of.

Its all Capone’s fault the Cowboys lost.. Wow, that is going down in the record book with the worst defense that you guys have.
    ……………………….
Hook, line and sinker. THe man is fishing for responses from people who actually think he’s being serious. Logicalvoicesays has been playing this same game for years.

Do you really think this guy REALLY thinks Al Capone and prohibition have anything to do with last night? Of course not. he just wants you to get worked up about it. Congratulations to him, because he succeeded.

  25. The current state of the Dallas Cowboys is a very big deal in Texas. Texas has bbq. and football ,not necessarily in that order. I have many relatives in Texas ,they aren’t happy.
The following actions must be implemented immediately:
    1. Fire M.K.-hire replacement
    2. Call every free agent defensive player sitting at home and get them to Dallas for a work out.
    3. Understand that this season is over and you are in a rebuilding mode.
    4. Have Jerry look in the mirror.

Garrett must be waking up in the middle of the night praying to get fired.

you could NOT have typed that with a straight face!!!!

    Marshall:
    catches 84
    yds 1090
    td 9

    Austin:
    catches 19
    yds 179
    td ZERO!

    LOL

  29. Meanwhile, Jerrah is crying all the way to the bank.

Until season ticket holders don’t renew in droves, nothing will get his attention.

    $$$ talks and he isn’t losing $$, yet . . .

  30. Thanks Jerrah for giving New Orleans Rob Ryan. Not only did he fix our defense, but he’s the perfect person to play Sainta Claus at Christmas.

  31. When ever I need a good laugh, I just read something about the Cowboys or Jerry Jones. I find more humor there than I do in the Sunday comics.

  32. To all you Cowboy fans………..You had Sean Payton as a coach but let him go. You had Ryan as a DC and you let him go. I remember reading that y’all wanted Ryan run out of town when he was there. The writing is on the wall, Jerrah don’t want excellent coaches, he wants his throne and no one will take that from him. Just keep sending us the players and coaches that don’t listen to Jerrah the fearless dictator
