Shanahan keeping quarterback decision secret, for now

Griffin Getty Images

On Monday, Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said he’d let the media know “in the next couple of days” whether quarterback Robert Griffin III will remain the starter for the rest of the season.

As of Tuesday night, Shanahan has said nothing.  To anyone.

Jeff Darlington of NFL Network reports that, as of 6:30 p.m. ET, Shanahan has not informed Griffin about his status for Sunday at Atlanta.

A league source confirms to PFT that the Redskins are holding the info close to the vest for now.

They can’t do it much longer.  Even if Shanahan decides to renege on his promise to reveal the decision “in the next couple of days,” word will emerge after practice on Wednesday, when Griffin or Kirk Cousins take the first-team reps.

Now that owner Daniel Snyder reportedly has called Shanahan’s bluff, the head coach has to decide whether he’ll go through with his potential plan, which would open Shanahan up to even more criticism regarding what appears to be a blatant effort to get fired and get paid for 2014.

And while on the surface Snyder can pretend he doesn’t care if Griffin doesn’t play in three meaningless games, a strong showing by Cousins down the stretch could create an unwanted quarterback controversy among fans who possibly have begun the process of falling out of love with RGIII.

Those crazy Shannys, they’re so coy in their bromances with their players.

I never question Mike Shanahan. He’s the best motivator and tactical mind in the business. In other words, the ultimate Headcoach. If he wants to sit Robert, it’s fine. We need Robert for our Superbowl run next year, not the remainder of the meaningless season. #HTTR

OK , so what is the problem RGIII or a QB that
    is more productive ?

Children are running this organization right now. Oh, well. At least I saw three Super Bowl championships in my lifetime. Many can’t say they’ve even seen three playoff wins. This franchise’s best days are behind it.

Does he think not stating who will start will help them win?
    A bit late for that.

Shanahan can bench the kid and make him miserable for the way he’s behaved because he can, unless he gets fired. He gets fired and everyone knows the head coach answers to a kid in his early 20’s.

Black Monday casualty. Kirk Cousins will shred the ATL secondary this weekend.

What is baffling, is RG3 is a premier talent, he is a narcissist for sure. That being said , it is obvious that his knee injury is a bigger deal than originally thought. The team is wreck on top of RG’s issues. Sitting him for the season is a good thing. Let him fully heal and get dialed in for next year. Show off what Cousins can do, worst case, cousins plays extremely well, and honey trade him in the offseason for a 1st or 2nd rounder,. Allowing them to add a piece to their much needed weak defense
As a Viking fan, I would be happy with that plan

  16. mackcarrington says: Dec 10, 2013 7:26 PM

If Shanahan benches Griffin, he can forget getting another head coaching job any time soon, as far as I’m concerned. All he would be doing is showing how small, petty, and vindictive he can be. He’s like a little child “showing out” in public.

  17. paul82461 says: Dec 10, 2013 7:27 PM

The game has passed Shanahan by. HIs son is just riding the coattails of a Super Bowl from 20 plus years ago. He wont make a decision because he doesnt know what to do. He wants to be fired and collect his money for his last year. I say keep him as the over priced water boy he is. Not a Redskin hater, he just needs to go.

I agree. Robert has beaten him in every award head to head and I’m confident he’ll have at least three more Superbowls than him at the end of their careers. RGIII is going to shred the NFL to pieces when he gets a line and a WR to compliment Garcon. #Youhearditherefirst

  24. mogogo1 says: Dec 10, 2013 7:38 PM

If it’s designed to be an attitude adjustment, then bench him. But don’t pretend it’s because of the injury. Because he’s over the hump in terms of that. He should have sat at the first of the season, when he clearly wasn’t ready to go. But the whole organization wanted to get rid of any blame for the injury, and starting him the first week was the only way to make that happen. Typical short-term thinking for a team that never gets over the hump.

  25. dirtydrynn27 says: Dec 10, 2013 7:42 PM

Stupid Vikings fan…..If you watch Griffin play You would know his knee is fine! The problem is a lack of blocking and an O-line that has more holes in it than a flour sifter!

  27. kokomike says: Dec 10, 2013 7:43 PM

I’ll bet that it is in Shanahan’s contract that he has final say on personnel matters. I’ll bet there is also an out for the Redskins if his decisions are detrimental to the team. He has already passed that threshold. It is just a matter of degree now.

  33. dukeearl says: Dec 10, 2013 7:55 PM

Unfortunately, I don’t think we’ll ever really know how good RG3 could have been.
It used to be that you would get a good QB and then they would be backup for a year or more.
Anymore it seems that they are expected to be a starter right out of college. Not sure that is the best way to go.
Owners are trying to sell tickets and don’t seem to care whether the players have a long career or not.

Snyder should tell Shannon to quit on the condition that Kyle will b HC for the last yr of his contract and go from there

By “every award head to head” you must mean one NFL award, Rookie of the Year….which is irrelevant since it was a popularity contest anyways and Alfred Morris was robbed of it. #2 in the NFL in rushing and doesn’t win the award?

    (1) The best time to stand up to Snyder was pre-season when Griffin was not healthy enough to start the season.

    (2) It could help Griffin to sit for a few games to gain a new perspective. He hasn’t been playing well and pressure is building. If Kirk performs well it will take the pressure off the team. If he doesn’t the Skins can get a higher draft pick. Clowney isn’t out of their reach.

No. I think with his work ethic, if we can upgrade pieces around him and get him a full off season. Who knows what can happen? That’s why I want Shan. to stay with the team. I don’t think there’s better options and it’ll be difficult to switch systems.
