Ravens’ Elam on Megatron: He’s old, so we’ll be physical with him

Getty Images

Ravens safety Matt Elam is 5-foot-10 and 210 pounds, while Lions receiver Calvin Johnson is 6-foot-5 and 236 pounds. So it wouldn’t seem to benefit Elam to try to get physical with Megatron when the two meet on Monday night.

But Elam, a 22-year-old rookie, says that when taking on an old guy like the 28-year-old Johnson, you always have to get physical.

“He’s pretty old, so I don’t know how physical he’ll be,” Elam said. “He’s a big guy, but he’s older. I guess when they get older they’re not going to be as physical, you know what I’m saying? We’re going to have to be physical, make him uncomfortable.”

Elam also said that Johnson is a “Big, fast, athletic, unstoppable, freak,” but you can bet those “old” comments will make their way to the Lions’ locker room. The Lions have previously acknowledged getting motivation from opposing teams snubbing Megatron, such as the time then-Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan said Johnson would only be the third-best receiver on the Cowboys. After Ryan made those comments, Johnson scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns in leading Detroit to a come-from-behind victory over Dallas.

In a big game for both teams’ playoff hopes, Ravens fans will have to hope Johnson doesn’t make Elam eat his words.

  11. billsmafiaordie says: Dec 11, 2013 6:10 PM

There are three players in the entire league I can say its unforgivably, foolish to give any added motivation too by trash talking them in the media. Patrick Willis, Adrian Peterson and Calvin Johnson. Just because of this one quote, ill be paying extra attention to this game. Just to watch not if when, but how many times CJ will invariably make Elam eat his words.

We are the only team that matters on this side of the country. Sorry Ravens fans and logical wannabe in the opening post, you are irrelvant no matter what. #ColdHardTruth

  29. ravensfansc says: Dec 11, 2013 6:17 PM

Matt, you made a rookie mistake. Please shut up and don’t aggravate the beast. It’s going to be a great game but let’s keep it that way with no extra talk.

  30. aaronfraudgers says: Dec 11, 2013 6:17 PM

Considering the fact that 28 is considered the peak physical age of a human being, Elam’s comment is laughable.

  31. kwjsb says: Dec 11, 2013 6:18 PM

Elam isn’t even tall enough to ride that ride………

  32. brinew918 says: Dec 11, 2013 6:18 PM

    Lol 28 is old? Really?

  33. mackcarrington says: Dec 11, 2013 6:19 PM

What the kid lacks in brains, he makes up for in confidence.

  34. elliottcovert says: Dec 11, 2013 6:20 PM

28 isn’t old, especially for a position like receiver where you can easily play well into your 30s. Really, 28 is basically within the prime age range for every position except possibly for quarterbacks, who frequently peak in their 30s.

Elam is about to get punished by 77 inches and 236 pounds of physical.

  35. socalcpa7 says: Dec 11, 2013 6:20 PM

I’m pretty sure he ain’t old, but I’m pretty certain you are stupid

How do you forget to mention that?

  39. cfeeley52 says: Dec 11, 2013 6:22 PM

I’ll steal a little saying that’s common down here in my new home state of South Carolina….. Matt Elam…. “Bless your heart”. LOL

Kid better be tough because he isn’t smart.

  42. sveltegodzilla says: Dec 11, 2013 6:23 PM

Dude got juked halfway to DC on that screen to Cordarelle Patterson at the end of the last game, getting physical should be the least of his worries

  43. sgtdiver says: Dec 11, 2013 6:23 PM

By old I hope he means in the prime of his career. Didn’t he just break the receiving record less than a year ago? To bad we’ll never see Elam on a isalnd against Megatron.

  44. hermes0277 says: Dec 11, 2013 6:23 PM

He couldn’t stop Patterson or Gerhart. Why in the world would he think stopping the best WR in the league will be easy?

  46. steelersaregodsteam says: Dec 11, 2013 6:25 PM

  47. willjasper says: Dec 11, 2013 6:26 PM

Why poke the bear? Let your play on the field do the talking.

  48. lofynus says: Dec 11, 2013 6:27 PM

In Matt Elam’s defense, he thought they were asking him about ANDRE Johnson.

  49. jolink653 says: Dec 11, 2013 6:27 PM

It may be possible that he was saying that tongue-in-cheek and was not being serious about Megatron being old

  50. orivar says: Dec 11, 2013 6:39 PM

By these comments you know Elam is wishing for a prayer, 28 isn’t old at all. That’s actually an athletes prime.

  51. oriolesvsravens says: Dec 11, 2013 6:44 PM

    Oh brother

  52. coovara says: Dec 11, 2013 6:51 PM

This poor boy is gonna get torn up…

  53. pipkinite says: Dec 11, 2013 6:54 PM

If his fantasy does come true and Matt Elam somehow lives up to his hypothetical by somehow physically shutting Calvin Johnson down, would it be right to nickname the rookie “Optimus Prime?”

    Or is that not logical,

  54. thetooloftools says: Dec 11, 2013 7:05 PM

Hey Elam… slapping Mr. Calvin around is not really where you want to go. The old gray beard is going to stomp on you. STOMP ON YOU.

  55. dawnpatrol111 says: Dec 11, 2013 7:08 PM

Elam must have CJ in his fantasy WR1 slot…….

  56. beachsidejames says: Dec 11, 2013 7:21 PM

    C’mon Calvin!

  59. dannymac17 says: Dec 11, 2013 8:06 PM

I honestly have no clue who this guy is.

    You gonna punch Megatron?

You are not optimus bro you need to have a seat.

  60. joker7558 says: Dec 11, 2013 8:23 PM

Grab a napkin Mr. Elam, your about to be served.

  61. robhffk says: Dec 11, 2013 8:40 PM

I’m a ravens fan.I cant believe he said that..His play this year has been average at best

  62. elliottcovert says: Dec 11, 2013 8:57 PM

So I’m thinking that about 11 catches for 200 yards and a pair of touchdowns sounds about right for Megatron after he hears about this.

  63. thetruthcampaign says: Dec 11, 2013 9:06 PM

CJ = 200+ yards this game and 2 TDs.

  64. asherallencanttackle says: Dec 11, 2013 9:07 PM

Patterson faked Elam out so badly that Elam fell down. He needs to shut up. He’s not very good.

  65. thetruthcampaign says: Dec 11, 2013 9:09 PM

I’m not worried about Elam or Flacco or Rice. I’m worried about my Lions, and that’s the story of the season.

  66. mswravens says: Dec 11, 2013 9:13 PM

Just got home from work. Sit down to some food & find this gem. Ugh! As a Ravens fan I’m totally embarrassed! Man I hope this is a learning moment & Matt learns not even to think such stupid thoughts, let alone express them…

  67. briang123 says: Dec 11, 2013 9:25 PM

Brilliant move, insulting Megatron, the best WR on the planet.

  68. thereyougo2 says: Dec 11, 2013 9:31 PM

Most of these posters have never watched Elam play from the comments posted. Elam will run right through Johnson. Taking nothing away from the best receiver in the NFL but Elam can and will punish any receiver. A star in the making. Only wished he played for Philly.

  69. 8to80texansblog says: Dec 11, 2013 9:33 PM

Since I have Stafford on my Fantasy team, I hope Megatron GOES OFF.

  70. dddavis75 says: Dec 11, 2013 9:33 PM

All of you sound like groupies. The ravens d is very physical and even if megaclown have a good game the run defense and the other receivers will be shut down. Teams barely score on the ravens d except the broncos. Every other team this year has struggled against that d. And for those who don’t know who Elam is give him another year learning the system. You will soon know.

  71. camdenyard says: Dec 11, 2013 9:42 PM

    Well, that wasn’t smart.

  72. sbaltimore says: Dec 11, 2013 10:00 PM

Ravens fan here. What Elam lacks in brains he makes up for in stupidity.

  73. johnnyjagfan says: Dec 11, 2013 10:12 PM

The better Cowboy motivation was that Cowboys’ D was more focused on Reggie. 329 yards out of Calvin.

  74. staffordsyear says: Dec 11, 2013 11:27 PM

  75. mlbbal52 says: Dec 11, 2013 11:27 PM

Time for one of my favorite plays to happen atleast twice. That being ” Stafford rushed out the pocket toss it up off his back foot 50 plus yard completion to megatron”.

I wouldnt give cj or josh gordon any extra motovation if I was a db. Both are having great srasons

  83. deathonwings410 says: Dec 12, 2013 6:44 AM

  88. gurkharavens says: Dec 12, 2013 10:22 AM

I so wish this kid wouldn’t run his mouth and do something during the game. CJ, take it easy on my Ravens ROOKIE

  89. getyourownname says: Dec 12, 2013 10:29 AM

Not smart. If he’s not careful, he’ll devolve to the level of Lamar “Flacco won’t win a SB in my lifetime” Woodley.

Of course, it’s not like anyone mocking him here hasn’t also said something stupid, or that if they were subjected to the same publicity media selective parsing, they wouldn’t object that their comments were being unfairly taken out of proportion.

  90. sbchampsagain says: Dec 12, 2013 10:31 AM

    Nice work, Rookie!
Its now not a quesiton IF Megatron will light them up, it’s now a matter of “how many yards and TDs?”

  91. crownofthehelmet says: Dec 12, 2013 10:46 AM

Easy to say when your role is to play over the top. Elam should be forced to play press coverage on him for a few plays.

  92. crownofthehelmet says: Dec 12, 2013 10:51 AM

I am so glad the Steelers don’t run their mouths.

  93. dcstinks says: Dec 12, 2013 11:08 AM

Bad move.. Mega Tron will go beast mode because of his performance in Philly.

  94. noaxetogrind says: Dec 12, 2013 11:12 AM

I think we are all in agreement that what Elam said was ridiculous, foolish, shows that he is a rookie and probably did not endear him to his own teammates. That being said, all of you posters who have said “I am a big NFL guy and I have never heard of this guy”. I could care less about the Ravens but this guy was a first round draft pick. If you haven’t heard of him then you don’t follow the League, period.

  95. nwest20 says: Dec 12, 2013 11:15 AM

Elam must hang out with Dez. Maybe he should ask Dez about what happened to him when he opened his mouth about Calvin Johnson.

  96. steveb9995 says: Dec 12, 2013 11:50 AM

Heh… Megatron will take this youngster to school. Elam obviously didn’t watch film of the Dallas game before he opened his mouth.

  97. thebonus44 says: Dec 17, 2013 8:07 AM

6 catches on a whopping 14 targets with 3 blatant drops.

Wooo, he sure took them boys to school!

Usually Megatron is the reason the Lions win, but last night he was one of the reasons they lost.

Oh, right, Matt Elam with his 1st INT of his career. Blame the media for taking his comments out of context, but it backfired.
